29 - Festival
The nice thing about having positions that weren't very public-facing was that they could sneak out and blend into crowds when they wanted to. Yes, they were a Fire Nation man and Water Tribe woman in the midst of a myriad Earth Kingdom citizens, but in such a metropolitan city as Ba Sing Se that was not as unusual as it might have been. They made it a habit to take one night per month completely off from work, no matter what, and wander through the city til they found some small street festival. Ba Sing Se was huge, there was always something going on, and they had a marvelous time learning about their adoptive home this way. Zuko's favorite were the summertime sparkler festivals, where children raced through the streets yelling rhymed poems to keep malevolent Spirits away. Katara's favorites were the winter ice sculpture contests, which she swore up and down she never helped anyone cheat at. But they both loved the autumn festivals, with their wreathes of russet-leaved vines and steaming mulled cider, and the spring flower festivals, which always had the best sticky buns and fruit tarts. They were very happy in Ba Sing Se, and they were happiest of all with each other.
