"Ahhhgggghh" Draco groaned as he heard the alarm going off on the bedside table. He leaned over Hermione to see the offending timepiece.
8:45
"Seriously Granger, you set an alarm?" He moaned looking at his witch who was just starting to stir, her hair a mess all over the pillow. If he weren't so hungover he'd attempt another round with the beautiful mess before him but honestly he didn't have the energy. And his head pounded like never before. And his stomach lurched uncomfortably at the smallest movement. He turned off the alarm and fell back onto the pillows.
"Mmmhh. Yeah, we gotta get going. Don't wanna be late." She mumbled as she began slowly sitting up. She winced as the sun coming through the window caught her eye. She wandlessly pulled the curtains closed.
"Late. What'd mean late. Isn't lunch at 1130?" Draco asked, trying to burrow back into the blankets. If it weren't for the fact that Mrs Weasley would be highly offended he would say forget lunch and sleep till noon then get Scorpius.
"Today it's breakfast at 9. Come on, up you get." She had finally sat up and was stretching, and he couldn't help but snicker as she reminded him of a cat arching her back. He wisely kept that thought to himself.
"Why today of all days would she change? It's always lunch. Is this some kind of payback for all of us asking her to babysit?" He was still laying back, refusing to get up.
"You could call it that. Either way we have to go. You don't want to be late and have to face her with a hangover. " she was now standing, looking around at the clothes thrown all over the room. Finally she was pulling on his shirt as they heard a thunk from the front room. Without a pause she summoned her wand and was running out the bedroom door. Draco right behind her, still naked. They raced into the room to find Theo on the ground, obviously having tripped on a chair that Draco may have upturned last night in his haste to get to the bedroom.
"What the fuck are you doing Theo?" Draco asked, stepping in front of Hermione.
"I was coming to talk to Granger."
"How the hell did you get in?" Hermione asked wand still pointed down at the wizard.
"I flooed to Draco's then used his floo to come here." The usually very put together sandy blond was still in the clothes from last night, obviously he had slept in them. He looked up at Hermione and she thought he looked as bad as she felt. She wanted to question him further but didn't want to risk being late.
"Well you're here now. We can talk when we get to the Burrow. Wait here while we get dressed." She turned and headed back to her room.
"Wait." He called to her now retreating back, "what's a Burrow and why are we going there?"
Draco held a hand out to help his oldest friend up and smirked, "you haven't seen anything like it, just wait and see." He then went to follow Granger and Theo called out, "well do you at least have any hangover potion?"
"No. Just sit still and we will be right out" she called back to him as she walked into the bathroom and brushed her teeth. She took one look at her hair and admitted defeat, just putting it in a loose bun at the top of her head, not even trying to brush or tame it. When she walked out of the bathroom to find Draco just looking around the room lost. She went to her closet and pulled out a shirt and pants for him and threw them at him. He looked startled as they bounced off his mid section. He hadn't even tried to catch them. "Hurry up Malfoy, I won't be late because of you. In exactly 5 minutes I'm flooing out of here, with or without you." She reached back into her closet and pulled out a pair of jeans and one of her old Weasley Christmas jumpers.
"Why do we have to get there so gods awful early?" He reached down to pick up his clothes and about toppled over. As he stood he rubbed his head, moaning, "I need another two hours of sleep and a hangover potion. At the bare minimum before I'm forced to interact with a house full of Weasley's."
"A house full of Weasley's? I didn't sign up for that!" Theo exclaimed from the doorway.
Hermione jumped to turn around as she buttoned up her jeans, "Dammit Theo, do you not understand privacy? '' she growled and walked back into the bathroom slamming the door so she could finish getting dressed.
"Nope." He replied poping his lips on the 'P.'
"You have to understand Granger, he's like a dog he has no boundaries."
"Well you better learn really quick." She opened the door, "because I will start bopping you on the nose with a newspaper if not." She tried to look intimidating but knew she fell short of the mark with the way both men just smirked at her. "Arg, let's go boys. The sooner we get there the better."
"I still haven't agreed to go anywhere." Theo protested, stopping 2 feet from the floo.
"Just get your arse in there and stop your whining. I don't have patience for it today." She pushed him the last 2 steps and grabbed the floo powder throwing it into the flames and calling "the Burrow " before pushing him through.
Draco looked at the small witch, "you know you're sexy when you're all worked up."
"Nope, you are not distracting me. In the floo you go." She said now pushing him as well.
"Can't blame a man for trying."
Hermione followed the two through and had to push Draco out of the way so she could get out. Molly had been in the kitchen and was startled to see a stranger come through the floo but quickly relaxed when Angelina introduced him. Recognizing his name she then stood there staring him up and down claiming he was too skinny and needed to eat.
The clock struck 9am and Molly looked around as she led those in the kitchen to the dining room. "Everyone here?"
"Nev and Hannah are walking up the path with Luna now" Ginny answered her mother looking every bit as hungover as the rest. While the place was packed this was the quietest Draco had ever seen the house. With those mentioned joining them everyone from last night was present as well as Bill and Fluer. Harry was already sitting at the table and had his head resting in his arms. He sat up as everyone filed in and his glasses sat crookedly on his face, hair even messier than usual. Ginny literally flopped into the chair next to him. Neville sat with Luna and Hannah on either side leaning on him. It was anyone's guess as to who was holding who up. Katie had on the biggest, darkest sunglasses he had ever seen. Draco looked at Blaise, whom he did not expect to see there. It was odd to see the rather debonair wizard sitting stock still looking as if even the slightest movement would cause him to let loose the contents of his stomach. Even George was subdued, the usually boisterous man was sitting quietly but growled at Hermione when the chair she pulled out next to him scraped the floor. Molly didn't seem surprised or even upset at the state of her children and guests. Instead she quietly bustled around getting the table set.
Arthur was the only one missing as well as the children. Draco was going to ask but no one seemed alarmed at their absence.
"Good. I don't have to lock the wards again." The matriarch scolded looking at Thomas. He had the decency to look ashamed as he apologized.
At the bewildered looks given by the Slytherins she went on to explain, " I don't mind taking care of my family, I'm a mum it's what I do best but I don't tolerate tardiness, no matter how humble they might be feeling. So anyone not present when we sit down gets locked out." She waited till everyone was seated then charmed mountains of food to come from the kitchen on platters. The food looked even more amazing than usual but Draco wondered just how offended she would be if he just had a piece of toast. Since Hermione insisted on no hangover potion he didn't think his stomach could handle any more. After all the platters were settled she brought in a small cauldron filled with a bluish green potion in it. This seems to be what everyone was waiting for as they all perked upon seeing the cauldron. She summoned a tray of glasses and filled them all with water then used a dropper to add three drops to each glass. Everyone followed her every movement, practically holding their collective breath. Finally she flicked her wrist and sent a glass to each person. "Drink up you sorry lot." The matriarch said laughing as they all began drinking. Draco looked as the regulars all did as told and all visibly relaxed. He caught Blaise's eye and shrugged, drinking his as well.
It was….. like nothing he had ever felt. Traditional hangover potions just treated the sensitivity. They didn't rid you of the hangover, they just helped the severity. Your head still felt foggy and throwing up was still an option depending on the amount of alcohol consumed. Whatever Molly had given them made it feel like he hadn't drank at all. He instantly felt as if nothing had happened last night, his head was clear, stomach wasn't rumbling. He even felt invigorated, as if there was pepper up potion in it as well. Which shouldn't be. The ingredients of traditional hangover potion naturally negated those in a pepper up.
Multiple shouts of "thanks mum" came from around the table as everyone began digging in. Draco just looked around in wonder at the now completely different table. It was crazy how quickly the atmosphere had changed. Eventually everyone's plate was filled except the three Slytherins who were still too dumbfounded to move.
"Ah, the potion virgins." George sighed as he looked at them and leaned into Hermione, "the first time is always the best, isn't it? Especially if you don't know what to expect."
"Indeed." She agreed then smirked at Draco, "I told you we didn't want to be late."
"I see. Mrs Weasley, that potion is absolutely amazing. Where did you get such a recipe? I've never seen anything like it. I honestly don't know how it even works?" Draco asked in awe, surprised yet again by the witch now sitting at the head of the table.
She smiled as if reading his mind, "I'm not just some house witch you know. I'm a Prewett by birth. I assume as Sacred 28 you were forced to read this one's ancestors rubbish book?" She said nodding towards Theo. Theo looked up startled as Draco nodded. Of course he had to read the book. He had practically memorized the ridiculous book before he stepped foot in Hogwarts. Lucius insisted on it so Draco knew who it was socially acceptable to be seen with.
"No offense dear," she added to Theo before continuing on, "and what did it say about the Prewett's"
"Of course. There were many prestigious Potions Masters on your family tree. I take it you studied under your uncle?"
"Absolutely. Mother wanted me to be one of those brainless twits but father knew better. I spent every spare moment studying under Uncle Ignatius."
"Mum brewed almost all the potions for the Order." Ginny piped up pride in her eyes. Draco remembered the first time he had come to the Burrow thinking that the kitchen looked like a potions lab. Now he understood why.
"This particular potion has been passed down for generations, each master improving it before giving it to the next generation. Sadly it seems none of my redheaded children have the gift. So I will pass it onto Hermione." the older witch looked at the witch seated next to him fondly.
Hermione looked startled at the declaration. Obviously it was the first she was hearing of it. "I'd be honored mum."
"Well everyone hurry up. The children will be back soon."
"Where are the children? " Draco finally asked as he loaded his plate up. Now that his head wasn't pounding and his stomach had settled he was famished.
"Arthur takes them for an early morning walk during our hangover breakfasts. That way everyone can get themselves settled before the kids come in. I don't mind brewing the potion and cooking breakfast but I don't want the children to see this lot in such a sorry state."
This declaration was met with another round of "thanks mum"
"How is dad handling it?" Bill asked as he sopped up his eggs with a piece of toast, "the numbers literally doubled from last time we did this. And I know you raised 7 of us but I feel you were rather outnumbered last night."
"Mrs Weasley, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you would have so many. Next time I will just leave Scorpious with Tippy." Draco quickly interjected. He had planned on leaving him with Tippy to begin with. It was only at Granger's insistence that Mrs Weasley would be offended that he changed his mind.
"You will do no such thing." She declared shaking her head at him, "he was literally the calmest, sweetest child of the bunch." He tried to object but she continued on, "I mean it. You don't bring him and I won't invite you to breakfast the next morning, understand? " She glared at him till he nodded in understanding. "Good. Besides last night was fine. I enlisted some extra help." As if they knew they were being talked about the front door burst open and the children came laughing in. They all said hi as they passed through to the kitchen. "Hurry up and wash your hands. And know I will be inspecting them so you better be through." Called the witch who followed them in carrying a bundle in her arms.
Draco's greeting to his son died on his lips as he heard that voice and looked up to see the Aunt he'd never met. While she looked like she could be Bella's twin she sounded like his Mother, but somehow softer. She walked up to the table and started to say something when to his right Draco heard a clatter as someone dropped their fork. He turned to see Theo looking as shocked as he felt. Theo was just staring open-mouthed at the witch standing before him, he shoved his shaking hands under the table to hide the tell. Honestly even though Draco knew it wasn't Bella he was trying to hide the urge to shake himself. Hermione sensing his troubled thoughts reached under the table and placed her hand on his left arm, just over his Dark Mark. Her calming magic washed over him but he still had to fight the sneer from forming. He turned to Theo and watched the emotions pouring off of him, fear and pure hatred. Draco understood, he was there the day Bella had tortured Theo because she had overheard him declaring he would never take the mark. She was relentless, as usual, and only stopped because the Dark Lord had summoned her. Draco had pulled Theo out of the drawing room, laying on the floor mere feet from where Granger would be tortured 9 months later. Theo was the first Draco and Severus had tried their experimental potion on. Draco had set him up in an empty room in the Manor and kept him tucked away until it was time to go back to Hogwarts. He had stayed at Hogwarts every holiday and had planned to run after graduation to avoid taking the Mark.
Andromeda for her part watched between the two wizards warily. She had known her nephew would be present this morning. She had just spent the evening and morning getting to know his son after all. She hadn't known he had brought friends, friends who obviously also knew Bella. Andy had learned quickly to be wary of everyone after the war. Bella had hurt so many people and while everyone knew she was dead Andy still got reactions when she went out in public. Sometimes it's people having flashbacks to their experiences with Bella. Other times they know she's not Bella but feel justified taking their hatred out on her instead because they were related. Just this past summer she was attacked in Diagon Alley, some wizard whose brother had been killed by Bella decided that she needed to feel the pain he had felt and began throwing the Cruciatus at her. Thankfully the idiot decided to attack her right in front of Weasley's Wheezes and Ron and George heard her scream and came to her rescue. The mother in her wanted to comfort the very upset young man but she was just so tired of being punished for her sister's sins.
Finally she sighed, "Your Thaddeus Nott's son, aren't you?"
He bristled at the mention of his father but Theo nodded.
"Awful man." She paused as she decided how to continue, "I take it you aren't like him?" At his violent head shake she continued before he could interrupt, "I mean you certainly wouldn't be here, with this family if you were." She looked around the table at those she now considered family.
"I'm nothing like that monster." Theo spit out between gritted teeth.
"And I'm nothing like her." She sniped back, "So please don't look at me like that." She sighed, she understood to an extent, she had a hard time looking at herself in the mirror sometimes. "I don't hold your family against you, please extend me the same courtesy."
Finally Theo's face relaxed, "of course." He stood and walked around the table towards her, extending his hand, "Theo Nott. It's a pleasure to meet you ma'am. I'm sorry for my initial reaction. Narcissa would have my hide for such rudeness."
She shook his hand but paused at the mention of her sister. Draco had also stood and followed Theo around the table and saw the confusion briefly cross her face.
"Aunt Andromeda. A pleasure to meet you." He said also reaching for the eerily familiar witches hand.
"Finally." She said as she gently pushed his hand away and pulled him into a hug instead. "I hope you don't mind but when Molly asked for help last night I just had to agree when I heard your delightful son would be present. I must say he's such a sweet young man."
Draco was startled and at a loss for words so Andy turned back to Theo, "as much as I hate it I know the resemblance is shocking at first. At least you didn't try to hex me before I even spoke." She glared over Theo's shoulder at someone behind him. It was obviously directed at Harry as he began squirming in his seat, "In my defense I had just escaped away from a battle with Death Eaters."
Draco was still trying to adjust to this very new experience. The resemblance was strong but that's where the family ties ended. Andy was relaxed in a way he had never seen his mother or aunt. She arched an eyebrow at Harry's reasoning and then she reminded him of his mother.
After breakfast the children went back outside to play in the garden and everyone else was spread around the house. Most of them were congregated in the living room which is where Draco sat in a rather shabby but surprisingly comfortable wing back chair with Hermione curled up on his lap. While Mrs Weasley's potion was amazing it didn't make up for the lack of sleep. She was lightly drawing runes on his arm with her finger while he rubbed gentle circles on the small of her back. Around them the others were quietly telling stories and talking about work. About five minutes more and Draco was certain they would both be asleep when Percy and Audrey walked in from the kitchen. They had barely greeted everyone when Mrs Weasley came walking in from the garden. She had just glanced at them when she started shrieking. Draco was sure someone had been hurt until he realized she was excited and hugging Percy and Audrey in turns, squealing as she went. It quickly became apparent that the matriarch was excited by the ring worn on a certain left hand. All the ladies jumped up and began giving their congratulations as well. Draco stood and made for the kitchen hoping the distance would help with the shrill squeals. He wasn't the only one with the idea as he met Harry and George in there as well.
"I swear that woman is a bloody niffler when it comes to rings." Harry muttered.
"You're just mad because she ruined your proposal." George said as he pulled a flask from his pocket and poured a healthy shot into his pumpkin juice. He held it up to the others and they both nodded.
"Damn right I am." He said as he nodded his thanks to George then he turned to Draco to explain, "in the muggle world its tradition to ask the father for his permission to ask the daughter. Honestly I didn't know what traditions were held and what Ginny or her parents would expect. I had come to talk to them and just happened to have the ring on me. I had just picked it up from my vaults and had planned to propose the next night after a quiet dinner in. I wasn't here 5 minutes and Molly cornered me and declared I had to do it that night. She made it so we were left alone in the kitchen cleaning up and then listened at the door. I swear Gin barely said yes and Molly came in screaming, just like that."
Ron had walked up at the end of the story, " are you lamenting about your proposal again?"
"Yes. You know she insisted we have a family dinner to celebrate the next night then between me getting a case and Gin having an away game I didn't get laid until a week after."
"Oi, that's my sister you git!" Ron said, slapping Harry's shoulder. "I swear I'm going to kill Percy. " he muttered and as if he had been summoned the wizard in question came into the kitchen as well, followed by Ginny.
"What?" He asked, looking clueless.
"You know what. Mums going to be unbearable now."
Ginny laughed outright as she took a sip of her husband's drink then held her hand out to George. He handed her the flask and she added another healthy dose before continuing on. "Oh you guys are in for it now. She asked Audrey how long you have been together then turned on Katie and Hermione."
"See what you've started, Perce?" Ron growled.
"Well, she'd probably back off a bit if you were public."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Draco couldn't help but ask the fiery redhead.
"Oh come on. Only dates in muggle London?" She asked Draco, "or quiet nights in?" She looked at her brother. "You know mum. She sees your both serious but it doesn't sit well with her that neither relationship is public. I get why you don't, I really do. Whichever couple is outed first is going to be eviscerated by the media." All of a sudden she was serious, looking between both men. "However they both deserve to be treated better than this. This makes it look like they're your dirty little secret."
Draco quickly lost track of the conversation as he thought about what Ginny had said. It was true, he had been steering them away from the magical world. Not necessarily for the reasons she thought but she had a point as well. And he definitely didn't want Granger to think he was in any way ashamed of her or their relationship. Somehow he was going to have to fix this. It was time to come out of hiding. He hated to admit it and it would shock his 11 year old self but he had gotten quite comfortable being invisible in the muggle world rather than the center of the magical world.
He was so lost in thought he didn't notice when Granger came up to him to ask if he was ready to leave. He was beyond ready at this point. This week was already going to be stressful enough but it just seemed to get even more so.
Astoria Malfoy
Beloved Wife and Mother
January 3, 1982-December 14, 2003
Draco had known this day would be hard. He had been trying to prepare himself and Scorpious for it. But now he was standing here staring down at the gravestone and he wasn't ready. One year ago today his world had ended, or so it had seemed. So much had changed in the past year. Scorpious had been too young to understand any of it. He was just now accepting that his mother wasn't coming back. And it just broke Draco's heart knowing that Scorpious now felt his mother abandoned him. Draco tried to explain that she had no choice but he couldn't help the 4 year old understand.
Scorpious aside Draco was a wreck. He had loved Astoria. Truly and deeply, passionately. And now it was a year later and he was seeing someone else. Every milestone in his relationship with Hermione he warred with himself. After their first date and kiss Draco went home and spent the entire night tossing and turning, feeling that he was being unfaithful to Astoria. When he told Hermione he loved her he came home the next morning and just stared at his wedding photo. He knew he had loved Astoria and a part of him always would. Hermione helped him see that that was normal. Astoria had been the witch he needed when he was released from Azkaban. She showed him he could have a happy life, a family. And she gave that to him. And in giving him Scorpius he would always be tied to Astoria.
Now standing here he hurt for his loss but he hurt even more for his son. His son that would never really know his mother and couldn't understand why she left him.
Hermione had mentioned the anniversary first. She told him that she would be there for him as little or as much as he wanted. He felt he needed to go to the grave alone with Scorpious but asked her to meet them back at his place afterwards. So he was unsurprised when they walked in the front door and Tippy informed them she was reading in the den.
Draco and Scorpious walked in to find her curled up on the sofa reading, she stood up when she heard them come in. Instead of saying anything she just held her arms open. Obviously it was the correct thing to do when Scorpious threw himself in her arms. Hermione reached down and picked the child up allowing him to cling to her. She looked over his shoulder at Draco and the compassion and warmth she showed him just about broke him yet again. She stood like that for a moment before she sat back down with Scorpious straddling her lap, head buried in her chest, arms clinging to her neck. Once settled she reached her arm out to Draco inviting him to join them. He joined them, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and running a hand along his son's back to try and comfort the boy. Draco didn't know how long they sat like that. He only moved once he heard the floo activate in the office. He quietly kissed both their heads and stood to greet whomever had decided to come over.
Walking into the office he saw his mother stepping out of the floo. He had told her of his plans to go to Artoria's grave site in the morning then to stay home the rest of the day with Scorpious. However he had not mentioned that Hermione would be present as well.
"Hello Mother." Draco said as he placed a kiss on her cheek in greeting.
"Draco" she placed a hand on his arm in return. He knew that that was as close as he'd get to any kind of physical comfort from her. After having now met Andromeda he wondered if she had always been this way or if it was Lucius' influence. Andromeda had hugged him multiple times on Sunday. Not the bone crushing squeeze and hold like Molly but still a hug nonetheless. "I just wanted to check in on you and Scorpius. " she said looking closely at him. Her face was a perfect mask but he could hear the concern in her voice.
"Thank you Mother." He held his arm out for her to take so he could lead her to the den.
He was about to turn into the room when he heard his son's voice, "how could she leave me?"
"Hey, look at me." She paused, "I promise you, your mother did not want to leave you. She had no choice in the matter."
"How can you be sure?" The hurt in his son's voice broke Draco's heart but he waited to see what Hermione would say. Maybe she would be able to help him understand better than Draco could.
"Because I'm a mom too. She loved you and would never leave you if she had a choice. A mom has a special bond with her child. She carried you for nine months and would do anything to protect you. Including trying to protect you from this pain. And I know it hurts. Just know that you are surrounded by people who love you. They will never be able to replace your mother or her love for you but they all love you in their own ways." She paused again and he heard Scorpius sniffle, "I miss her so much sometimes."
"Of course you do, and that's ok. Your dad and grandmother do to. If you want to, talk to them about her. I never met your mother but if want to talk to me about her I'll listen. Even as you grow up there will be days you wish you could talk to her or moments you wish she could witness. Just do your best and know she's proud of you. You will always carry a part of her with you. And if you want to talk to a mom you have your grandmother, me and Mrs Weasley. None of us could ever replace your mom but we are all moms and we all love you very much." She paused and Draco was about to enter the room when Scorpius asked, "even Mrs Weasley? But she's Bryony's grandmother. "
Hermione chuckled lightly, "Absolutely. I know for a fact that in her mind your already one of hers."
Draco took that moment walk back into the room and the sight took his breath away. Scorpius was still sitting on her lap but instead of straddling her and clinging to her he had his legs to one side and was sitting back smiling up at her. Scorpius looked up and saw them walking into the room. He jumped off Hermione's lap and ran to give his grandmother a hug. As he was hugging her Hermione caught his eye and asked, "did I handle that right?" Draco just nodded as he pulled her to her feet and pulled her into a tight hug.
this chapter is dedicated to all the moms out there, its just a happy coincidence this chapter coincides with Mothers Day Sunday.
