I stare confused at this little girl. The fact that Lola is excited about her presence makes me even more confused. She completely ignores my silence and forces her way past me.
"Nice place!" She compliments as she looks around in awe. I mean I know I wished that someone special would come into my life but this is crazy!
"Are you lost?"
"No," she giggles and takes a seat at the sofa. Lola takes a seat beside her, causally resting her head in her tiny lap. "Cute dog."
"Kid seriously? Where are your parents?" I ask. She grows tense and focuses on rubbing Lola's ear.
"Well...I'm looking at one."
"Excuse me?!" Oh my god this cannot be happening.
"Yeah," she shrugs sadly. "I'm adopted... I did some digging and I found you. You're my mom. You gave me away 9 years ago, almost 10 now."
I can't deny her. One good look, one really good look and I see it all. She has bright green eye and she's a complete mix of Regina and I. The best part is that she has Regina's beautiful hair color, it looks so soft but it curls just like mine. At the same time though, she looks just like my mother; my real mother. Holy shit.
"My name is Eva." HOLY SHIT!
"Eva?" I almost choke. She frowns with concern.
"Yeah...you don't like it?"
"No no, I love it." I say to her and force myself to take a seat beside her. I haven't taken my medication in years. I've learned how to cope with everything but man do I need it right now. "It was my mother's name actually...and you look just like her."
"I do?" She gasps. I dont know what her life would be like but it seems to me that knowing her history and finding out little things makes her really happy.
"Yeah..." I trail. I'm not sure of what else to say but Eva has alot to say.
"Well, let's go!"
"What?" Eva gets up, Lol follows on cue. She heads to the door and opens it.
"We're going to New York, we have to get there before my mom realizes I'm missing."
"You–just give me your mother's number. I can call her and–"
"No! I want you to meet her. If you meet her she'll let you back into my life. I really want you in my life...please?" Again, how can I deny her? That precious face practically looks the same from when she was born. I owe her this much, so I gather my things and follow her lead.
Driving to New York normally takes a little over three hours. With all the traffic on a Friday night it took over 4. By the time we got to Eva's home, the sun had already set. Eva's mom is probably flipping out. I'm freaking out. What id she thinks I kidnapped her.
"Right here, this is it." She points to the big white house. I want to be amazed by it but my heart sinks when I notice the cop car in the driveway. Oh god!
"Mama was just elected mayor so we moved here!"
"Yeah...cool." I fake enthuse. With excitement, Eva climb out of the car and encourages Lola to follow. I just take my time and linger by the driveway because...shit! What if they think I kidnapped her.
"EVA!" The woman panics the moment she opens the door. "Oh my god! Where the hell have you been?!"
"I was–" Eva is interrupted by Lola who barks frantically and tackles the woman down. Thats when I notice...her. Oh my god!
"What the he–Lola?!" She gasps. "What are you doing here?!"
"Mama! I found my birth mother."
"What?" Regina frowns. She stands to look for this birth mother. When her eyes land on my, I desperately want to crawl in a hole. I have to be dreaming. "You're Eva's birth mother?"
My mind doesn't really process what she's saying like at all. It's been nine years. Nine long fucking years and all this time she's only been a few hours away?! Not to mention the fact that she's dead gorgeous in that blazer and pants suit. Her hair isn't as long as it used to be, she cut it, it stops right under her boobs. Her eyes are still as radiant as they always were and her makeup is flawless is as well.
"Hi," I finally force out. Hi? HI?! Seriously, I'm seeing her for the first time in nine years and all I can say is hi?!
"Cora told me you were somewhere in Europe," she chokes as she inches closer. She tries to hold back her emotions but I can't hold back mine anymore.
"Europe?" I shake my head as the tears break free.
"Yeah, I wanted to look for you and I just had no where to begin because I didn't know where in Europe or–"
"I've been in Boston...I never left."
Regina can't hold it back anymore. She races the rest of the way towards me and pulls me into the tightest, yet most comforting, hug I have felt in years. She squeezes me so hard like I would disappear if she lets go as she cries on my shoulder.
"I've missed you so much." I cry harder as her love brings the life back inside of me. She literally grips the back of my shirt and shakes her head.
"You've been this close all this time?" She cries harder.
"Yeah," I laugh, sniffling back the rest of my happy tears.
"You had a baby!" She gasps and pulls away yet never letting go of my shoulders. "Wait–Eva's turning ten soon."
"She is," I grin. The revaluation practically knocks the wind out of her.
"Oh my god. We were separated ten years ago."
"Yeah," I encourage so she doesn't hesitate with the thought. "She's yours."
Regina doesn't say anything else. She finally puts her lips where they belong, right against mine. I have never felt this relieved in so long. Life has been dull for the past few years but she's here. I finally found her again all because my daughter found me. It's a damn miracle.
"Mama!" Eva interrupts the moment. Regina pulls away with a dopey grin on her face. She tries to hid it by biting her lip and resting her head on my chest because I'm taller than her now. It feels good to be able to say that. "Let's show Emma around!"
"Of course. But you and I need to talk! I can't believe you just ran away like that! I'm so sorry if she bothered you Em I have no idea what's gotten into her."
"It's fine babe," I reassure her. Regina gives me a loving smile and takes my hand. Before we go inside, she thanks the officer for his time and help.
"It was all Aunty Snow. She used to tell me all about her sister." Eva happily informs as she skips to the living room with Lola by her side. "One day I asked why mama always seemed sad and she said 'remember my big sister I always tell you about? Well your mom is in love with her and misses her'. And I always wanted to know who my real mom was before mama adopted me so I asked Aunty Snow to help, she did and we found you."
"You...I dont know what to call you." Regina playfully accuses. "You're a devil for giving me a heart attack but an angel for finding her."
"Yeah! I'm amazing, you don't have to remind me." She teases earning a laugh from Regina and I. I take a seat on the sofa and finally soak in the decor. I always new Regina would live a lavish life but I didn't think she would be this sophisticated.
"What a way to spend you birthday huh?" She grins, placing herself right on my lap like no time has past us ever. I love it.
"Yeah... Oh my god Gina. The crazy thing is that I made a wish just before Eva knocked on the door."
"Ooo! What was it?" Eva begs with big eyes full of excitement.
"I wished someone special would come into my life."
"Awww!" Regina coos with teary eyes. "And Eva came."
"Yup, crazy right?"
"Yeah it's a really big coincidence actually –"
"So Emma, can you tell me who my dad is?" Regina glares at Eva while I tense. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to answer that so I look at Regina,
"Is she old enough for the birds and the bees yet?"
"Emma! NO!" She scoffs and swats my chest. "Eva, I'm you father."
"What?" The girl squeaks. "That doesn't make any sense!"
"It doesn't have to," I tell her calmly. "When you're old enough. We'll explain more."
"Fine," she groans with a complete attitude. She's got my personality, I can give her that. "Can I play with Lola outside in the treehouse?"
"Sure but dont run away again," Regina demands coldly. Eva frantically nods and runs off. When she's gone, Regina turns to face me better. I instantly grab a handful of her ass because I've missed it sooo much.
"I thought Lola would be dead by now."
"She's old, but she's still kicking." I reassure her. She chuckles and wraps her arms around my neck. "I'm a vet tech so, I make sure she's okay."
"That's great! I'm–"
"A mayor," I tease with wiggly brows. Regina rolls her eyes at my playfulness. "Of New York City! Thats big!"
"Yeah," she frowns. "But it also means I'm always busy. I feel like I don't show enough attention to Eva at all. It's not fair to her. Not to mention, Cora made me go into politics. I hate it."
"Well just quit," I shrug.
"It isn't that simple baby. I made promises and I tend on keeping them. New York is full of poverty and poor black and latino families. That needs to change and I can't just quit knowing that this is my chance to do that."
"God you're everything," I whisper, leaning in to place a loving kiss to her lips. She hums at the feeling and rests her head against mine. "So what now?"
"What do you mean, what now? You're going to take your ass back to Boston, pack your shit, and come live here." And that is like music to my ears! "I'm not losing you again. Never again."
"I'd like that. I'd love that alot."
This is the best birthday ever. I got my girl back and I have a family. I couldn't ask for more and I'm excited to finally live my life with peace and Joy. It's wrong. People may think its wrong that I fell in love with my step sister but I don't care. It feels right, so that means it is.
