Chapter 30: A Dangerous Mine Plot

Recently tankers transporting oil to Japan have been blowing up just off the coast from Tokyo with no apparent explanation. However, EAGLE intelligence suggested that Black Cross was behind it, using a series of underwater mines. Medaka and Ichigo hurried out to a tanker that was docked to begin an investigation. "We have to be careful in this operation," Medaka pointed out, "There's at least ten ships in this harbor. If that tanker explodes..." Ichigo nodded. "Black Cross has the entire Tokyo Bay filled with mines. Forget depleting resources, they're putting innocent people in danger."

Meanwhile out near the warehouses, a Mask Monster named Mine Mask was directing Zolders, each carrying a mine shaped like his head. Mine Mask's plan not only included the bay, but also EAGLE Headquarters. The Zolders carefully placed the mines near a warehouse door and hurried to safety. "All mines are in place," one reported. "Good work," Mine Mask said, "Now they'll see how powerful my bombs can be, even on land!" He led the Zolders to a safe distance before the mines exploded, taking out the warehouse, much to Ichigo and Medaka's shock.

They hurried over to investigate the explosion and saw the destruction. "So Black Cross was responsible for this as well," Ichigo noted, "Bastards." "From the sound of the explosion," Medaka noted, "It's clear a series of mines was used. We thought they were only focusing on the sea. But now they're attacking from land as well! This is getting serious and we need to find out what their current plan is." Ichigo nodded, smacking his fist into his hand. "Damn Black Cross Army... Just what's your game right now..."

The Black Cross Fuhrer was finding out exactly what the game was supposed to be. "So you want to bury exactly three-thousand mines and set them all off at once?" "Powerful as my mines are," Mine Mask explained, "Setting them off one at a time does not produce satisfactory results." Iron Man Mask General Temujin approached. "Where exactly do you plan on burying them?" "Every single EAGLE base located here in Japan," Mine Mask replied, "As for setting them all off, I will attach a device to each of them, with myself as the transmitter. That way if I die, then all three-thousand mines will explode as well." "Such audacity," Black Cross Fuhrer said, "I like it. Begin your plan at once!"

And so Mine Mask had his Zolders start digging to bury the mines. "Be gentle in setting them," Mine Mask said, "If they go off early it will ruin the entire plan." Just as the Zolders finished placing the mine, the familiar sight of the Midomerang flying in sent them scattering. The mine got struck and exploded, sending Mine Mask reeling. "Who's there? Who did that?" Midorenger and Momorenger appeared. "You can't just go planting bombs wherever you please!," Momorenger called out. "Not while we're patrolling the area!," Midorenger added. "You dare get in the way of the great Mine Mask?," Mine Mask demanded.

Midorenger and Momorenger looked at each other, wondering if he was a newbie. "Well duh we're standing in your way," Midorenger pointed out, "We're heroes of justice, after all." "Being in Black Cross's way is pretty much our job," Momorenger added. The Zolders nodded at Mine Mask, as if to point out that it was pretty obvious at this point. "Oh just shut up and kill them!," Mine Mask retorted. As the Zolders moved to attack, they were quickly met by the two Gorengers, who quickly began to dispatch them.

Seeing a group of Zolders taken out by the Midomerang, Mine Mask growled as he grabbed his chain flail. "You'll pay for that insult! Mine Hammer!" Momorenger spotted him rushing in as she took out two Zolders. "Damn! He's suicide charging!" "Midomerang!" Midomerang launching his weapon, only for Mine Mask to knock it out of the air. "Why does that never work against Mask Monsters?," Midorenger wondered aloud. Momorenger went for her Sakura Bomb, only to stop when she noticed white smoke emitting from the flail. "Mine Smoke!," Mine Mask called out, circling the Gorengers.

The sudden smokescreen allowed Mine Mask to escape, much to the duo's chagrin. "I won't let you ruin my plans!," Mine Mask called out from seemingly nowhere, "Before long I will have bombs set off all over Japan!" "The guy's insane," Midorenger noted, "If he sets off that many bombs, it could do as much damage to Black Cross as Japan. Either way, he needs to be stop. Momo, get in touch with the others." Momorenger and activated her wrist communicator. "Gorenger Room, please copy!"

As soon as the situation was explained, the Variblune was launched. Yusuke was piloting as usual with Jotaro as co-pilot. "I'll activate the Metal Detector to pick up the location of the buried mines," Yusuke said, "Make sure to mark them down accurately." "Of course," Jotaro said, a map and pencil in hand. Already the Metal Detector started going off as Jotaro marked down the location. "Area A6... Wait, another one in A7... And yet another one in B7! Yusuke they're all over the damn map!" "Damn!," Yusuke said, "They've covered almost all of Japan in one big minefield!"

With the situation so grave, EAGLE's bomb squad quickly got to work removing as many of the mines as they could. Ichigo and Medaka oversaw the operation just in case Mine Mask tried to interfere. Medaka was running a scanner over an unearthed mine when a sudden explosion went off nearby, sending the EAGLE soldiers scrambling to investigate. Medaka and Ichigo stayed behind, Medaka carefully prying open the mine's casing. Her scanner had picked up something important, and she needed to investigate internally to find out what it was. Once she got the casing open, she found a component that clearly had nothing to do with setting the mine off and removed it.

"That looks like a signal receiver," Ichigo noted, "Meaning Black Cross intends to detonate these mines remotely somehow." Meanwhile up above, Jotaro was ready to tear his hair out. "Just how many mines did Black Cross plant!? I'm about ready to quit here!" Yusuke too a look at the map. What he saw did not look pleasant. "That's way too many bombs. Just from looking at the map I can't hazard an estimate. Why so many? A few placed in the right locations should do enough damage. But this is overkill, even for Black Cross."

In the Gorenger Room, Yugi was tacking down the mine locations. Edogawa grimaced when he saw the whole layout. "Over a thousand mines in Kanto alone. And who knows how many more across the rest of Japan." "The heaviest concentration seems to be EAGLE's bases," Yugi noted, "And they're buried so deep that the only that have gone off so far are the ones we've tried to remove." "And when they do go off," Medaka said as she came it, "It will all be simultaneously."

Edogawa turned to see her and Ichigo. "All at once...?" Ichigo nodded and produced the signal receiver. "This same receiver is in each of the mines," Medaka explained, "When it gets the signal, it will explode." "If all those mines go off at once," Yugi realized, "Then forget just losing our EAGLE bases. All of Japan could sink into the ocean! The losses would be devastating..." "We can't let this come to pass!," Edogawa said, "You need to find whoever had the transmitter and stop the detonation!" "Someone in Black Cross must know who has it," Ichigo noted, "We'll capture one of them and get them to talk."

The team headed out on their Ranger Machines, spreading out in search of Mine Mask. At the same the time, the maniacal Mask Monster had just finished burying the last of his mines. "Hurry up and get it in here," he said to his Zolders as he climbed out of the hole. The Zolders brought over the mine and started to carefully place it in the hole. "Once the Gorengers all assemble here," Mine Mask bragged, "I'll detonate this bomb, taking them all to hell with me! With the detonation of three-thousand mines, all of Japan will be in chaos!" He chuckled. "Such a thought is worth dying for!"

"Mine Mask," a Zolder said, "We have a small mine left. Do we bury that one too?" Mine Mask looked at the mine, which was small enough to be held in one's hand. "No need," he decided, "Just throw it in the river. If it's that small it won't contribute much to the final explosion." The Zolder did so, and the mine was carried off with the current. Little did Mine Mask know, Yoko and her brother Taro were out rowing along that same river. "Hey Sis," Taro said, "What's a car that's easy even when you don't have a car?" Yoko looked confused. "A car without a car?"

Taro smiled. "It's easiest with Jotaro!" "Oh!," Yoko realized, "Riding on someone's shoulders! That's a good one!" Just then, she and Taro noticed the small mine floating up against their boat. Yoko tried to splash it away from the boat, but it only got closer. "It's gonna explode! Taro, come here quick!" Luckily the water was shallow enough to walk in, but the mine just seemed to keep following Yoko as she picked her brother up her arms and tried to flee. She managed to reach the shore and finally lose the mine as it detonated.

Yusuke and Jotaro were driving around in the Blue Machine. "No sign of Mine Mask yet," Jotaro noted, "Let's swing around and look again." Yusuke nodded. Neither of them noticed Mine Mask hiding nearby. "Such fools! They have no idea of the trap they are walking into! Once they find me, it will be all over for them!" He waited for the Blue Machine to stop, then came out of hiding with his Zolders. "Looking for me, Gorengers?" "Yeah, actually," Yusuke said, getting off the Blue Machine, "We have a couple questions to ask... Violently."

Mine Mask and his unit readied themselves as Yusuke and Jotaro activated their Ranger Buckles "Go!" The duo started dispatching the Zolders, dodging Mine Mask's attacks as they did. Aorenger got into a brief tussle with Mine Mask before getting thrown off. "Where are the other Gorengers!?," Mine Mask demanded. "I'd say the two of us are sufficient to deal with you!," Aorenger boasted. He made his point by easily taking out a couple Zolders that tried to ambush him.

Kirenger tossed another Zolder off a nearby hill before jumping down to deal with a few more. He charged like train at a whole line of the grunts, easily bowling the lot of them over. Once the Zolders were out of the way, Aorenger and Kirenger confronted Mine Mask. "You ready to throw down?," Kirenger taunted. "We'll see how your bravado holds up when this is all over!," Mine Mask declared, "Mine Hammer Throw!" He swung his flail around, causing the mine on the end to dislodge. The two Gorengers leapt out of the way as the mine landed and exploded. Aorenger tried to call in backup, but Mine Mask kept throwing more mines.

Luckily, he was able to get an emergency signal out, notifying Ichigo and Medaka on the Green Machine. Ichigo stopped for a moment as Medaka checked her communicator. "It's Ao's signal," she noted, "He and Ki must be in trouble." They rode out to help, while Aorenger and Kirenger kept dodging mine tosses. "You'd think at some point he'd run out!," Kirenger noted. Ichigo pulled up to where the signal came from and spotted the explosions. "Looks like they found Mine Mask," he said. He and Medaka hurried out. "Time to finish you!," Mine Mask declared to the two he was already hunting.

He leapt down from his vantage point, only to be shocked when he heard Midorenger and Momorenger come up behind him. "Now your problems have doubled, Mine Mask!," Midorenger declared. "Great timing guys!," Aorenger said as he and Kirenger came out of hiding. Despite being surrounded, Mine Mask wasn't deterred. "Good, now there's only one more left to arrive. Where's Akarenger?" "You sure you want him around?," Kirenger asked, "Our power increases five-fold when all five of us are together."

Mine Mask didn't answer, but swung about his flail to give himself some breathing room, forcing the four Gorengers back. However, he wound up just tying himself up due to the momentum of the flail. This allowed Kirenger to wrap him up in a giant bear hug before tossing him to the ground. He then pinned the Mask Monster. "Alright, Mine Mask, what are you scheming?" Momorenger checked his body. "Something's wrong. He doesn't have the transmitter!" Kirenger hoisted Mine Mask. "Where's the transmitter that sets off the mines?" Mine Mask laughed. "Do whatever you wish! You won't find it! Just kill me and get it over with like you always do!"

"Something's off," Kirenger realized, "The Black Cross Army doesn't surrender this easily." "Sorry to keep you all waiting," Yugi said as he approached on the Red Machine. Mine Mask quickly got up and laughed. "Now I have all five of you where I want you! You want to know where the transmitter is? Well it's inside my body, set to go off the second I die! So don't hold now, come closer! I'll blow all of you up with me!" Yugi chuckled. "Oh? You think you can actually do so?" Mine Mask scoffed. "I'll be seeing you all in hell!" He pulled out a gun to shoot himself, but Yugi had already activated his Ranger Buckle. "Go! Red Bute!"

Transformed and lashing out with his whip, Akarenger grabbed Mine Mask's arm before he could pull the trigger. Kirenger then grabbed Mine Mask in an armbar while Midorenger took the gun and disassembled it, rendering it useless. Aorenger then cuffed Mine Mask. "Bad move telling us your scheme," he said, "Now we have reason to keep you alive until we can disarm your internal transmitter." Mine Mask growled and quickly broke free, making a run for it. "We need to keep him from exploding!," Akarenger called out. The team hurried off after Mine Mask as he disappeared from sight, Momorenger and Midorenger heading in one direction and the other three going in the other.

Yugi, Jotaro, and Yusuke hopped down a hill as they searched through the brush. "No sign yet," Yusuke noted. Yugi nodded. "You and Jotaro head that way. I'll check over here." Elsewhere, Ichigo and Medaka were scaling a small cliff-face. "He's got to be around here somewhere," Medaka said, "If we don't find him quick the country will be in serious trouble." As they reached the top, they ran into Yugi. "Any sign of him?" "Nothing yet," Ichigo admitted. Medaka than noticed something. "Over there. Zolders."

Sure enough, Temujin was directing a group of Zolders carrying bazookas. "What are they doing?," Ichigo wondering. Yugi looked in the direction the Zolders were aiming. "Damn... Over there. They have Mine Mask tied up." The others looked and spotted Mine Mask tied to a post. Clearly Temujin was determined to see Mine Mask's plan through no matter what it took. "If they manage to get Mine Mask to explode all those mines will go off!," Medaka realized. "Then we'll have to stop them before then," Yugi stated.

Unaware that his operation had been spotted, Temujin readied his grunts. "Prepare to fire!" "Go!" His order was interrupted by the sudden sight of Midorenger, Momorenger, and Akarenger. Aorenger and Kirenger also showed up, having been alerted to the situation. "Damn!," Temujin called out, "They've spotted us!" "Akarenger!" "Aorenger!" "Kirenger!" "Momorenger!" "Midorenger!" "The five assembled!" "Gorenger!" Mine Mask chuckled as the Gorengers approached. "I was almost ready to give up, but it looks like I can take you with me after all! Fire now!"

"You heard him!," Temujin said to the bazooka squad, "Fire at will!" Kirenger quickly grabbed the pole Mine Mask was tied to, pulling him out of the way as the bazookas were fired. During the escape, Mine Mask wound up getting free of the pole and ran into the line of fire. "Shoot me! Shoot me now!" Kirenger moved to chase after him, but Aorenger held him back. "No need to waste energy. I have a trick that'll send him off to dreamland." He pulled out his Visor Weapon. "Blue Cherry!" He fired off an arrow that hit Mine Mask right in the back of the head.

"Good work, Ao," Akarenger said, "Mido, Momo, go disable his bombs. The rest of us will deal with the bazooka squad." The team nodded and got to work. Mine Mask pulled the arrow out of his head, still calling to be shot even as Midorenger and Momorenger grabbed him. "Guy must be as strong as an ox," Midorenger noted, "The sleeping compound hasn't knocked him out yet." Fortunately, Mine Mask wasn't strong enough to shake off the effects for too long, already starting to feel tired as the two Gorengers held him down. Temujin had the bazooka unit open fire, but they missed and alerted the duo, who quickly got Mine Mask out of the way so they could disarm his explosive.

Before the unit could continue firing, Akarenger leapt between the Zolders and started attacking, Aorenger and Kirenger joining in from behind to take out the bazooka wielders. Kirenger grabbed one of them in a judo hold. "I'm Mount Aso! Make me mad and I explode!" He promptly sent the Zolder flying off the hill. "Red Bute!" Akarenger used his whip to strike at several Zolders charging at him. Aorenger took out three more few a few quick punches and elbow strikes. "Launch the attack!," Temujin called out, and several Zolders pushed over some rocks to cause an avalanche.

Midorenger realized the rocks were aimed at Mine Mask and moved to block them, Momorenger stopping her work just long enough to help. As she went back to work some of the rocks slammed into her back. "You okay, Momo?," Midorenger asked in concern. "I'm fine," Momorenger assured him, "The Gorenger suit took the brunt of the impact." She successfully removed the gunpowder and detonator from Mine Mask's head as the other Gorengers ran over. "So much for Mine Mask's scheme." Speaking of Mine Mask, he was now stirring awake, unaware of the impromptu surgery. "Good grief I feel dizzy... And about a pound lighter..."

He whirled around to face the Gorengers. "You bastards think you can just put me to sleep so easily!? Mine Hammer Throw!" He tossed his flail, only for Akarenger and Aorenger to grab the chain and pull at it, disarming Mine Mask. But he wasn't yet out of weapons. "Mine Machine Gun!" The various spikes on his head started blasting out heavy fire, causing the team to back off a bit. "Okay, I still have a chance at this!" He started bashing his head against a rock. "It's no use, Mine Mask," Momorenger declared, "The only thing you'll get from that is a headache. That feeling of being a pound lighter?"

Mine Mask turned around and gasped when he realized Momorenger was holding his detonator. "Damn it!," Mine Mask called out, "Then I'll just have to dig up one of the buried mines and detonate it manually!" He ran to the closest buried mine. "He's still telling us his plans like a moron," Kirenger noted. "Now's our chance to take him out before he can dig up that mine," Akarenger said, "Momo, Gorenger Storm!" The team got into formation as Mine Mask started digging like a dog. "New Power Operation!," Akarenger called out Momorenger got out the Storm Ball.

"Gorenger Storm Double Attack! Ki!" "Mido!" "Ao!" "Aka!" "Hit!" By now Mine Mask had managed to dig quite a way down. He spotted the incoming Storm Ball. "Damn, I can't let that bomb impact!" He managed to run away from the impact, but Momorenger had already run forward to bat the ball back into the air as Akarenger leapt up for the real attack. "Finish!" Unprepared for the second shot, Mine Mask caught the Storm Ball right on his head as it detonated, destroying him in a massive explosion. Temujin was not pleased. "We almost had it this time... Just wait for our next scheme, Gorengers... I assure you it will be impossible to overcome!"
