"One of the things I love most about you is that you zig when I think you're going to zag," Blaine said with a chuckle.
"Thank you," Kurt said with a giggle of his own.
"And to answer your question," Blaine said, "if you'd like to help, I can't think of a situation when I'm ever going to say no."
Blaine got up and cleaned himself and the quartz off, then got dressed. Kurt had moved back to the sofa and was looking through Blaine's copy of Nothing Can Keep Us Apart, remembering how long it had taken him to write and draw the book for him all those years ago.
"It's in really great condition still," Kurt said.
"I've cherished it and kept it safe," Blaine replied and sat beside Kurt on the sofa.
"Thank you for keeping my copy safe, too," Kurt said as he put the book down on the coffee table and turned toward Blaine.
"It was my pleasure," Blaine said. "I actually have something else of yours if you'd like it back."
Blaine got up and got the journal that Kurt had written in all those years ago and handed it to him.
"This helped me more than I can ever say," Blaine told him as he handed the journal over to his love. "I've come to terms with reading your private thoughts and feelings. At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to, but in the end, it kept me sane on really tough days; I figured you wouldn't be upset about it."
"I'm not," Kurt replied as he began flipping through the journal. "I'm not mad at—"
"What's wrong?" Blaine asked and looked at the page Kurt had stopped on. "Oh shit."
"Dear journal and book,
I fucking hate you. I hate that you are here, and Kurt isn't. I hate that, with every page I turn, I am reminded of how each of you got to have more time with him than I did. I hate that you're all I have until I can be reunited with him. I just… FUCK!
I miss him, and you both sit there, night after night, mocking me. He's touched each of you more than he has me. He's spent more time with each of you. I know I shouldn't hate you, but I do."
Reading that prompted one of those fuzzy memories Kurt had to come back to him.
"They let me come to you," Kurt said with tears falling down his face. Kurt still wasn't sure who "they" were, but he knew that whoever had kept him company while they were apart had allowed him to visit Blaine when he was really struggling, when they were afraid he might not be able to endure the weight of his pain and grief.
"They did," Blaine replied.
"Do you think all of that was part of what was in Elliot's book? I remember when you wrote this, or at least I think I do. I came to you; we jumped around in your dreams, but everything looked familiar. Do you think it's like Elliot said in his book, that there is such a thing as infinite soulmates who live life after life?" Kurt asked. While he was in The Unknown, he'd known what it was. Now, however, he wasn't sure; he couldn't access those memories at all.
"Possibly," Blaine said. "It was definitely us in all of those places. And it would fit with the theory that the princes in that book could have really been us. In fact, I fully believe that the princes in this story are us and that it's just as Elliot explained, that we have lived life after life. Which also means that we have more and more lives to live."
"Our love is pretty extraordinary if it is," Kurt replied.
"I believe our love is that extraordinary," Blaine answered and captured Kurt's lips in a searing kiss.
Before the boys could get too heated, though, Blaine heard the front door open and close and the sounds of whispered voices downstairs.
"My family is home," Blaine whispered. "They know you're here, too, and they're trying to be quiet."
Kurt looked down at his watch and saw that it was time he headed home. "Walk me to my car?"
Blaine nodded and stood up so he could help Kurt up off of the couch. The two kissed one more time and then walked, hand-in-hand, downstairs. The Edwards family wasn't in the hallway when they got down there, and Blaine figured they had all gone to their respective rooms to unpack.
"Call me later?" Kurt asked once he was in the driver's seat and strapped in.
"Just try and stop me," Blaine said with a smile and then kissed Kurt once more before he drove away.
The two of them talked off and on throughout the rest of the day, and after Blaine had fed that night, he approached Elliot.
"El?" Blaine said. "Do you have a little bit to talk to me about something?"
"Sure, B. What's up?"
"I need to ask you some things about you and Seb before he got turned," Blaine began. "And now, I'm wondering if he should be here, too, or if he'd be okay with you talking about it without him here."
"How about you ask me what you need to, and if I feel like he needs to be here, I'll call for him?" Elliot asked.
"Perfect," Blaine replied. "So, Kurt asked me about feeding this weekend. We talked about it, and we both agreed that it's too soon for me to start feeding from him. We've got nine years until he can be turned, and that's just a really long time for me to be dependent on him. Anyway, he asked if he could watch me feed, and Ezri agreed. It turned him on, and while we were talking about it, he asked me if I thought we could be intimate without me wanting to bite him. I hadn't really ever thought of the two simultaneously because feeding has never been an arousing experience for me. I know, though, from you and everyone else, that it can be."
"It is possible to be intimate and not bite, yes," Elliot replied. "Even after I began feeding from Seb before he was turned, I didn't feel compelled to bite him when we were intimate. It's amazing when I do bite him and vice versa; don't get me wrong, but there is no compulsion or pull to have to."
"During the little bit we did, I didn't feel that pull," Blaine replied. "I just wanted to make sure before we went too far, and I found out I couldn't stop myself or something. I'd never be able to handle that, hurting him like that, taking something like that from him before he willingly gave it to me."
"Blaine, you won't hurt him," Elliot said earnestly. "I was afraid of that, too, before Seb was changed. Your body, your instincts, they know when to stop. Even in the heat of the moment, I never once lost control. I never once worried about taking too much and hurting him. Trust yourself. Trust your bond, and you'll be fine. The two of you already have the most amazing love story ever. Just let yourself live it now."
"You're an amazing brother," Blaine said as he looked at his brother in awe.
"So you've said a time or two," Elliot replied with a grin and then hugged his brother.
"Hands off my mate, B." A voice came from the door. "You have your own now."
"I was just thanking him for his stellar advice with a hug, Seb," Blaine sassed.
"Just so you don't get any other ideas," Seb sassed right back and came over to the pair of them, straddling Elliot's lap before diving in for a kiss.
It was almost like the two of them forgot Blaine was even sitting there as Elliot started groping at Seb's ass, and Seb sank his fangs into Elliot's neck, causing him to moan loudly. Elliot then started licking at Seb's neck before sinking his fangs into his mate. It wasn't until Blaine heard zippers being lowered that he came back to his senses and left the room as quickly as his vampire speed could take him.
As the days progressed, Blaine began to notice little things about his family he hadn't really thought about before. Quinn and Josiah's behaviors didn't change much, though they did share more kisses here and there than they had previously. Santana and Brittany were more openly intimate with each other around the house, too. Nothing, though, compared to his brother and Sebastian. Elliot and Seb were often caught making out or drinking from each other, regardless of if they were in their room or not.
The more he thought about it, the more he loved his family. They'd all been holding back their affections from their mates while they were around him. None of them had wanted to flaunt their mates while Blaine was waiting for his.
"Do you think that Josiah and Quinn hold back because they see themselves as your parents of sorts?" Kurt asked after Blaine had explained his revelation to him the following weekend. The pair was sitting in one of the living rooms by the fireplace, cuddled under a blanket while Kurt scoured Pinterest for a new Fall Celebration dessert.
"Partially, I do," Blaine replied as he pointed to and laughed at a turkey made from Rice Krispie treats with Reese's Pieces coming out of it like stuffing. "The other part is that they've always been more private people, even before Quinn was turned. I think some of it is just the times they were born in and the families they were born into."
"Are you sure you all want to join us for our Fall Celebration meal?" Kurt asked as he saw a recipe for Salted Caramel Apple Snickers Cake that he wanted to try several minutes later.
"We all do," Blaine replied. "Are you sure that you want to feed 10 extra people?"
"I'm actually looking forward to it," Kurt said and turned to face Blaine. "I'm excited to meet your family. I mean, I've met the six you live with, but I'm excited to meet Matthew, Ava, Percival, and Rhoslyn."
"How are you feeling about the other thing?" Blaine asked.
"I feel really good about it," Kurt replied. "You'll let me know what they say?"
"Of course," Blaine replied, and the two of them went back to looking at recipes.
"I love how, in this lifetime, the traditional Thanksgiving has been changed to Fall Celebration," Karma said as she and Caphriel watched their favorite infinites on the screen. "In this lifetime, it's a day that everyone in the world celebrates together to show their thankfulness and to express how grateful they are to simply be alive rather than what it has been reduced to in other lifetimes and how it came about, the suppression of one people to lift up another."
"Once they get back up here, do you think we should tell them just how much their love had affected this world they were living in?" Caphriel asked.
"Would it make a difference in the other lifetimes?" Karma asked.
"I guess not," Caphriel replied.
"Do you know what they're talking about?" Karma asked Caphriel. "What 'thing' Kurt asked Blaine about?"
"I do," Caphriel answered.
"Anything you can tell me?" Karma asked.
Caphriel told her and then said, "Ultimately, though, it will be up to them what they choose."
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say the All-Knowing has a soft spot for these infinites, too," Karma joked.
When Caphriel didn't say anything to confirm or reject Karma's thought, the pair silently went back to watching.
The day before the Fall Celebration at the Hummel's house, a lot of things happened somewhat simultaneously. Quinn, Santana, Brittany, and Sebastian all came over to Kurt's to help get things prepared for the following day. They all were in the large kitchen with the Hummel family, and they all had their jobs. Burt was in charge of smoking the chickens and preparing the ham, Brittany and Santana were taking care of the potatoes—mashed and sweet—Quinn was preparing the green beans with bacon and the corn, Sebastian was making rolls, and Elizabeth was preparing the stuffing. Kurt was in charge, by his design, of the desserts. He'd decided on the Salted Caramel Apple Snickers Cake, a No-Bake Bourbon Pecan Pie Cheesecake, a Chocolate Pumpkin Cake, and per Elliot's request, a pumpkin pie. They listened to music, all singing loudly and harmonizing perfectly with each other while they cooked.
While that group was having the time of their lives, cooking and spending time together, another group of people were meeting at the Edwards' residence. Matthew, Ava, Percival, Rhoslyn, Blaine, and Elliot were all discussing something that affected them all, looking at it from every angle and point of view, making sure that their decision was solid and safe. It took a couple of hours before they came to a unanimous decision. It had been decided from the start that no matter what they decided, they all had to agree for it to be an option.
After the meeting, Matthew asked Blaine to stay for a little longer so they could talk privately.
"How have you been?" Matthew asked once they'd sat back down on the sofa.
"Honestly?" Blaine started. He knew that his grandfather didn't even have to touch him to tell if something was wrong or if he was lying about anything. "I'm a nervous wreck most of the time, and when I'm not, I'm so incredibly in love I'm not sure how I'll ever fit more love for him in my heart. And then, the very next moment, it happens."
"Love and happiness look good on you, my child. Have you guys discussed his turning?" Matthew asked.
"We haven't discussed it in any detail, no," Blaine replied. He was elated that his grandfather could see how happy Kurt made him, how there was no other person or thing around that could make him as happy as his wonderful, caring mate could. "He knows that he wants to be turned, and we've discussed my feeding from him when it gets closer to time."
"It's very mature of you both to wait, especially after you've waited this long for him already," Matthew concurred. "With all of the advancements in medicine, many of them put in place by your own family, I'm sure that if your desires ever changed, there would be a way to make it work."
Blaine nodded in agreement. "I know. And when we get there, we'll see what the options are."
"It's hard for you, isn't it?" Matthew mused.
"It is," Blaine agreed. "It's not hard for me to resist him. Well, maybe that's not the right choice of words. I can smell his blood, and it calls out to me, almost like it wants me to drink it, like it wants us to be one by joining our bloods together. And I know, without ever having tasted it, that it will be the most perfect blood I've ever had in my life. I want it each and every time he's around me. His love, his comfort level, his timing, though, they're what are more important."
"You are an exceptional man, Blaine," Matthew complimented. "So, tomorrow then?"
"Tomorrow," Blaine replied and left it at that. They'd discussed it, both he and Kurt, as well as the family.
When Blaine called Kurt that night, he told him what the family had decided.
"Wow," Kurt uttered. "And… You won't let go of my hand, right?"
"Never," Blaine vowed.
The two talked for a little while longer and then went to bed, knowing that tomorrow would be wonderful and nerve-wracking and life-changing all at the same time.
The day of the Fall Celebration was finally here, and Kurt was feeling a conglomeration of feelings. He was excited to host such a large meal this year. He was both nervous and excited to be meeting Blaine's extended family. And, he was scared of what the possible outcome of the day could ultimately be.
What kept him calm, though, was that Blaine didn't have any bad feelings about the day. He had told Kurt about his gift and the ways it had manifested itself before. Today, there wasn't anything, so Kurt was choosing to take that as a good sign.
The doorbell of the Hummel's home rang around 11:30 that morning, and Kurt promptly answered it. He was met with the blinding, moonbeam smile of his love, his mate. Blaine kissed him on the cheek and then stood aside while his family entered the home, each one hugging or shaking Kurt's hand, even Matthew as he had on his ever-present gloves, until everyone was in the living room.
"Welcome, everyone, to our home," Burt announced once everyone was in the living room. "Blaine, some of your family I know, but would you mind doing introductions for those we don't know?"
"Actually, Dad, before we do that, there's something I'd like to talk to you and Mom about," Kurt said, bolstered by Blaine's hand in his, knowing that he wanted to do this now, that it felt right to do it now.
"Is it something that can wait?" Elizabeth asked.
"It is, but I don't want it to wait," Kurt replied. He caught Brittany's eye, and she gave him a nod and smiled. It was in that moment, more than any other moment, that he knew everything would be okay. "Have either of you ever felt like I wasn't from this time?"
"I'm not sure I know what you're asking," Elizabeth replied.
"You've always been a bit of an old soul so to speak," Burt added.
"Do you guys want me to ease you into this or just lay it all out on the table?" Kurt asked.
"I'm assuming that, since you're doing this now, they all know something we don't?" Burt asked.
"They do, and there's a reason for it," Kurt answered. "I wasn't intentionally keeping anything from you, but this affects them just as much, if not more, than it does me."
"Just tell us, sweetheart," Elizabeth said. "No matter what you tell us, we're still going to love you."
Kurt closed his eyes and took a grounding, cleansing breath. "The first time I was born was in 1644 in London, England to Burt and Elizabeth Hummel. I had two older siblings, Elijah and Beatrice. Dad, you died of a heart attack, and then, I died a few years later of what came to be known as The Great Plague. Blaine died, too." Kurt stopped for a moment to gauge his parents reactions and, to his great surprise, they didn't seem shocked. He looked toward Quinn and raised his eyebrow at her, silently asking her if she was keeping their emotions calm. At the almost imperceptible shake of her head, Kurt continued.
"Blaine, from what he told me, was moments from death when Josiah saved him. I know what I'm about to say is even more fantastical than what I've already told you, but it's all the truth. Josiah, Blaine... Well, everyone here but us three Hummels are vampires, and one day, I will be one, too."
"That's a lot to take in," Burt breathed out. "Is there more?"
Kurt nodded his head and continued. "We believe that the two of you have been reborn over and over again since then, too, so that I could be reborn when the time was right. From what we can gather, and I can go more into detail about everything later if you want to know more, Blaine and I are some sort of infinite soulmates, and when I died and he didn't-not really, at least, since he was turned-in the 1600s, somehow, he knew that I'd come back to him. Hundreds of years passed until the two of you had me this time around."
As Santana watched Kurt talk, she could see a new bond forming between all of them and the Hummels. She knew, before Kurt even asked, how this day was going to end. She looked over at her mate, and they shared a knowing smile before linking their pinkies together and remaining quiet while Kurt continued to talk.
"Eventually, I will be turned to be like my soulmate," Kurt stated. "It won't be anytime soon, though. My question to the two of you is this: Is this something you would want for yourselves, too, or would you rather let life take its course naturally?"
"Is it something we can think about?" Elizabeth asked. "Like your dad said, this is a lot to absorb and a huge decision to make."
"You can take all of the time you need," Blaine said, sensing that Kurt was needing a moment.
And, his mate did. He wasn't sure how he'd pictured this whole conversation going. Still, though, in the back of his head was his worst-case scenario that his parents would kick him out and never want to see him again. He was in awe of how well they were taking it.
"Do either of you have any questions we could answer?" Josiah asked.
"How many vampires are there in the world?" Burt asked. He wasn't sure why, but it seemed important to him.
"Not many given the overall population," Matthew answered. "My name is Matthew Edwards, and I am the oldest vampire." Matthew then told his story to Burt and Elizabeth before answering Burt's question. "At last count, there are around 100 of us in total, give or take a couple. We are scattered all over the world and never stay in one place for more than 10 to 15 years, save this family here thanks to Sebastian's gift."
"What is Sebastian's gift?" Elizabeth asked.
Instead of explaining it, Sebastian aged his mate by several years and then, just as easily, returned him to the same age he had been.
"Amazing," Burt and Elizabeth said together.
"Do you all have gifts?" Burt asked.
"I don't," the woman sitting beside Matthew answered. "My name is Ava, and Matthew is my mate. I do not have any gifts. Our children, however, were born with them, and it is Josiah's gift to bestow gifts upon others."
"And, I'm guessing you've turned all of them?" Elizabeth asked, pointing to the Edwards family.
"I have," Josiah answered.
"When are you going to be turned?" Burt asked his son.
"Not for several years," Kurt answered. "I will be turned when I turn 25 unless there is something life-threatening that would prevent me from doing so."
"So, we have some time to decide," Elizabeth surmised. "If we do this, it will be when you do. Do you know… Do you have any idea, if I choose to turn, if I will be stuck in this wheelchair for all of eternity?"
"We have never turned anyone who has been in a wheelchair before," Matthew answered. "From what we do know about the turning process, though, it repairs the body. Blaine and Elliot were nearly dead when they were turned, and they recovered to full health."
"One of my children turned their mate after they'd fallen and broken multiple limbs, not to mention severed necessary arteries and was bleeding out, and they mended back together," Percival stated.
"Well, it seems like we have some time to think," Burt said. "Let's go eat for now. That feast in there isn't going to eat itself. And even if we decide not to do this, please know that your secret will be safe with us."
"Thank you," Matthew said and stood up, offering his hand to Ava.
The rest of the day was filled with love, laughter, and wonderful food. Kurt loved getting to know Blaine's extended family and started to understand why Blaine was so attached to his grandfather. He found himself in the kitchen alone as he was preparing the desserts when none other than Matthew himself joined him.
"Would you like some help?" Matthew asked.
"That would be nice," Kurt said. They both knew that Kurt was fully capable of getting everything around that was needed, but they also both knew that having the other there felt right.
"I know that it's early, and you by no means have to make a decision any time soon, but have you given any thought as to who you would like to turn you?" Matthew asked as he was setting out the dessert plates by the silverware.
"I've thought about it, yes," Kurt replied. "I'm not sure I'd feel right having a gift if Josiah turned me. It feels like being given this second chance is a gift in and of itself."
"That makes sense," Matthew replied.
"Do you… I know you can read people by touching them," Kurt continued. "And, I know that you can't read the future, but maybe there's something that you can tell? Would you… Is that something you'd be willing to do?"
"Of course, child," Matthew said, and he motioned for them both to sit down. Once sat, Matthew took off his glove and held it out, waiting for Kurt to be ready to place his hand in Matthew's.
Once Kurt's hand touched Matthew's, tears started to form in the corners of the vampire's eyes.
"Is it that bad?" Kurt asked, not understanding what was happening.
"It's beautiful," Matthew whispered. A few more moments passed, and then, Matthew let go of Kurt's hand. "You have been blessed twice in your life. Well, maybe even more than that. Yours and Blaine's love is monumental, so much so that I'm not even going to try to put it into words. That's gift number one. Gift number two is that you were reborn in this lifetime so that the two of you could be together and make more changes to this world than you'll likely ever know. Your third gift is one that you got just recently."
"My memories," Kurt stated.
"Your memories," Matthew agreed.
"I want Blaine to turn me," Kurt decided. "I think, deep down, that's what I've wanted since I found out about it. Nothing else seems like it would even remotely be something I'd be interested in."
"Trust your instincts, Kurt," Matthew said and slid his glove back on his hand. "Now, shall we call everyone in here for some of those delicious-looking desserts?"
Kurt nodded and called in his family, all of them. They talked and ate and talked some more. By the time the Edwards family left, the familial bonds were so strong between them all, they could all feel it, vampire and human alike.
