I do not own Hetalia okay? Just seeing how you guys like this really makes me smile. Anyway, I don't have much else to say, so enough of this A/N, on with the fic!
"Hey podsolnechnik…." Matthew said as he pulled the cover off Ivan and Alfred's bed. "You had a promise to me and I have a job where I have to be a place at a certain time unlike yours."
"Uggggghhhhhhh." Alfred said as he placed the cover back over his head.
"Do you mind Matthew?" Ivan said sitting up rubbing his eyes. "You can wake him up without that. I understand you and Fredka had a less than healthy relationship dynamic to learn from growing up but you do not need to barge in like that." He sat up and looked at Matthew, "And what is so funny about what I call Fredka for a pet name?"
"Nothing…." Matthew said backing away from a clearly irritated Ivan. "I'll meet you in the kitchen Al."
"Uggggghhhhhh…." Alfred moaned as he wiggled his way up out of the bed. "Do I have to?"
"Yes. You promised." Ivan sighed as he threw the blanket on the ground. "Besides, the sooner that Katyusha and Matthew have their house, the sooner we can convert that extra bedroom into a child's room. Not that I am trying to imply we need to push them out…."
"I get what you mean!" Alfred said, springing up as if he had a pot of coffee. "I call the shower first!"
Ivan laughed to himself and placed his face in his palm. He knew that if needed Alfred would be very professional, he had seen him when he was at work. Which was what he needed to be tomorrow when they did meet with the caseworker. What if they find something wrong with us? The house, our finances, health all those things are very sound. I cannot see why they wouldn't approve us…. maybe because of our status? Nah, this country that isn't an issue…. He thought as he saw Alfred put his clothes over his shoulder and head to the bathroom. "See you later Vanya. I am going to try talking Mattie into a house our soon to be born niece will love."
"Remember that Katyusha has to live in there too…." Ivan said.
"Well I have a feeling they had already gone through her screening process or whatever it was you guys did the other day." Alfred said. "So I just have to work my magic on my bro. See you later Vanya."
"Yes." Ivan said as he laid back down and stared at the ceiling. "Best start to get up…." He moaned.
Meanwhile Matthew looked at his watch in the kitchen tapping his foot. It was still rather early in the morning, and he had only 3 places that Katyusha had wanted him to look at but he had wanted to get back before lunch and spend some time with her before he had to go to work. She still had a few more weeks of bedrest prescribed as it was 6 weeks out from when she had gone to the hospital, about the same time that Alfred would have his cast removed. Which was something that both parties were waiting forever for. Alfred for being able to move like normal, Katyusha to just be able to move more than just to go to the bathroom. Sighing, he yelled at Alfred in through the bathroom. "Alfie, you done in there yet?"
"NO!" Alfred yelled back. "Do you know how fucking hard it is to shower and get dressed with a cast on? I've been wearing nothing but sweatpants for a few weeks now! God I don't know how I am going to that meeting with Ivan tomorrow with a cast like this!"
Matthew sighed as he headed towards his and Katyusha's room when he bumped into Ivan. "Oh hello." He said. "Just going to spend some time with Katy before Al finishes up. Sorry I woke you like that."
"Apology accepted." Ivan said gruffly. "If you would permit me to say so I heard Fredka's concern and I have a few pairs of pants that I may be able to talk Kaytusha into modifying so they will go over Fredka's cast and he won't have to dress like he does for a work meeting."
"Tie and dress shirt but sweatpants…." Matthew said. "I noticed…."
"Well the sweatpants are because of Katyusha and it is winter." Ivan admitted. "Often it's just his underpants…."
"Why does that not surprise me honestly?" Matthew said
"I am ready now." Alfred said as he stepped out of the bathroom with steam pouring behind him. "Don't you remember how it was when you had your bone hacked playing hockey growing up?"
"Yeah. That did suck and make getting ready hard…." Matthew paused. "I'll grab you some McDonalds on the way out."
Alfred looked like he was going to say something in retaliation to him but he sighed. "Fine. You owe me some McMuffins. It's too early for Big Macs."
"Fine." Matthew said. "Now let's go. I want to go through all the legal stuff and have the house before our girl is born."
"I'm coming…." Alfred rolled his eyes.
Seeing that Alfred had probably used up a lot of the hot water, he headed to Katyusha to see how she was doing and see if she could actually help with his idea. She had taken to knitting a lot when she wasn't playing the games she was given. She had always been one who could tailor things to fit better, especially when Ivan had his growth spurts and they had limited selection on what they could afford and all the clothes they found did not seem to fit or Ivan quickly grew out of it. He knocked on the door and Katyusha looked up "Come in."
"Hello Big Sister." Ivan said.
"What is on your mind Vanya?" Katyusha asked.
"Fredka and I are meeting the caseworker for the adoption tomorrow."
"Oh Vanya!" She said hugging her younger brother. "That's so nice. You and Fredka would make wonderful parents."
"Yes but I was wondering if you could help me take a nice pair of my pants for the meeting to help get a cover over his cast." Ivan said.
"Hmmmmm…." Katyusha thought. "I could very easily take one of the pairs and put a Velcro seam on the side. It would be able to go over it just fine and present to the people interviewing you two the air of professionalism that superhero sweatpants do not. I will need you to bring me the pants and my sewing equipment. Obviously I cannot get it."
"Do you have the things you need?" Ivan asked.
"Not everything now that I think of it." She quickly took the notepad she had beside the bed and wrote some things down. "Get these for me and I will have it done for you before tomorrow morning. That does not seem like a hard job."
"Thank you." Ivan smiled.
"No, I want to have a cute little niece or nephew from you. This is how that will have to be." Katyusha smiled. "Frankly I am getting tired of knitting and playing Pokémon. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and I appreciate Fredka getting it for me but I am tired. I nearly have it beat and I have a few blankets already knit for the little girl."
"I know you'll be good mother. But there's only a few more weeks until you are on your bedrest and until Fredka's cast is removed." Ivan smiled as he took the list.
Alfred followed Matthew into the last house from the list, chewing on the last McMuffin as he walked around the house after Matthew. "So, this is the last one huh?"
"How do you keep your balance and eat at the same time?" Matthew asked. "Yeah and I think this is the one I will talk Katy into. 3 bedrooms, attic, decent sized kitchen and the backyard is pretty good." He sighed. "God I want to get this done. I hate living with you and Ivan."
"Just what's that supposed to mean?" Alfred said.
"I didn't mean to make you upset with that, but it's just a matter of pride." He said. "My place, my wife my kid kind of thing. I could never repay you and Ivan for keeping us up while we were in that situation." He blushed.
"You've guys have helped with things, that's fine." Alfred said.
"And I'll never admit this, especially to Ivan but the fear he'd beat my head in with a pipe is what made me put all I had into the audition." Matthew sighed. "I'll call the agent to start the process when I get home and have Katy with me." He looked down at his phone and looked at the map. "And not too far from work, actually a little closer. Good."
"Well also helps that the station manager is a friend of Papa's and likes you." Alfred laughed. Matthew rolled his eyes. "But seriously when it comes to business, I take it Mr. Beilschmidt is tough but fair. Never met his brother but from what I saw on the news he looks like he's no fun."
"Not until Oktoberfest by what Gilbert says." Matthew sighed. He looked around at the kitchen and living room and imagined what it would be like with his decorations in the place. Lots of flannel and red and Katyusha's blue and yellow accents and he knew what she had been planning for the baby's room, having a wish list already put together and something he was going to talk to Gilbert and Francis about throwing her a proper baby shower. They were both very good with celebrations and as long as he told it to be calm, they would treat it as such and have a great time. Matthew smiled as the sun came through the kitchen window.
"I think once this gets finalized, this sale, I'll talk to Papa about throwing you and Katy a housewarming and baby shower in one. I'd want to wait until she's off bedrest. It' a few more weeks isn't it?" Alfred asked as he sat down.
"About when that cast comes off." Matthew said.
"Can't wait. Don't know how I am going to handle that freaking meeting. Who knew adoption was so busy…." Alfred said.
"I doubt that they would just let anyone adopt…." Matthew said as he saw Alfred's despondent frown. "But Al, you and Ivan aren't just anyone and would be good parents."
"Thanks." Alfred said. "I just wish that we could ooops into parenthood like you and Katy did."
"Well that's one way to put it….and if I hadn't been laid off right before I found out, I wouldn't have dreaded it then. Well beyond normal anyway…." Matthew said. "But seriously ask Katy what being pregnant is like and depending on the mood it would be wonderful or a nightmare. I don't think either of you want weird cravings, morning sickness, back pain, in addition to what she normally had, so on and so forth. And that was before she was put on bedrest."
"Yeah but it's easier to get the kid…." Alfred sighed.
"That is true…." Matthew said. "And I wondered what you two mixed would look like…. but science hasn't gotten that far quite yet…."
"Well we'll kind of know." Alfred said. Matthew looked confused. "You're married to Vanya's sister and we're near identical twins."
"You got a point…." Matthew laughed. "I like this place and I will tell Katy to get started. I have to get back home and get ready for work."
Once back home, Alfred headed to his office because he had an assignment for his job he needed to work on and Matthew quickly changed after explaining to Katyusha which house he was wanting to make an offer on and kissed her really quick as she worked on the project that she explained Ivan wanted her to. Most of the night went smooth from there and Ivan had insisted that he and Alfred go to bed early so they were well rested the next day. Sure Alfred had gotten him to sign the paper authorizing this without him being fully conscious but it was something he was considering doing in the first place, Alfred had just gotten rather exited like he does and fears rejections. He's so adorable when he's excited…. Ivan thought but the appointment was early that morning, first thing from what the agent had told Ivan over the phone and he wanted Alfred to be at his best. They were bound to find some reason to reject them, and he was going to make sure they did everything in their power to seem like the best parents ever. Reaching down, already showered and dressed he shook Alfred up. "Dorogoy" He whispered. "Time to get up…."
"Uggggggghhhhhh." Alfred said as he looked at Ivan who was already showered, dressed and in his suit.
"Rise and shine my love." He said as Alfred sat up. "I have your outfit." He thrust a white dress shirt, blue tie and tan dress pants and belt onto Alfred's lap.
"These are your pants, well your old ones…." Alfred said confused. "Sure you don't need some coffee?"
"Nyet." Ivan smiled. "You see I was worried that your sweatpants selection was not very well, fitting. So Katyusha and I took a pair of my old pants, as they are a few sizes bigger than yours and she sewed a Velcro strip so the leg will fit around your cast. Problem solved."
"You think of everything." Alfred said as he took a shower, dressed and had the modified pants fit mostly over the cast and Ivan drove them to the address he was given. They sat in a waiting room in the office that looked rather barren, just a few plants magazines, uncomfortable padded chairs and a TV playing daytime television. Alfred had just mailed the paperwork once Ivan had signed the forms; he did not remember this place being so boring before.
"Alfred, Ivan, you can come in now." The caseworker said as she pointed to two chairs in front of her desk. "So both your background checks came back fine, income looks good, the fact you own your home is a big plus too. So, tell me why you guys want to adopt besides the obvious factor."
"That men can't get pregnant?" Alfred said. The caseworker nodded. "That's been a bit of a running family gag. You see my brother and his wife are expecting and due to some job issues they moved into our place while Matt and Katy get a house."
"Matt?" The caseworker said looking Alfred up and down. "You don't mean the news station's new anchor Matthew Williams do you?" She said curiously.
"Yep." Alfred smiled proudly. "My brother."
"I knew you reminded me of him! Now I see why. His wife is a very lucky woman." The caseworker said dreamily.
Alfred moved his hand in front of her as she snapped out of her dreamy state and back to her computer. "Okay I just want to interview you two, get a good background on you so I can find you a child who would suit you. You said on the application you are looking for a toddler and maybe foreign adoption?"
"Yes mam…." Ivan nodded. "I came to this country from Russia when I was young, about 9 years old and was raised by my great uncle until he passed when I was a teenager. My older sister took care of me and my younger sister and instilled a deep family value and education ideology in us. I want to do the same for a young child who may not have much the same issue. Because of what I was given for chances here I found a man I love and a good job and good home and like I said want to pass that to a child who needs it. The fact my sister and her husband are staying with us until they get their house after Matthew's previous job loss reflect my value of family."
"Wait, your sister married his brother?" The caseworker said with a smile.
"Hey! We didn't know they were dating when we were and found out they were serious about each other at our wedding!" Alfred defended.
"Oh I wasn't saying anything was wrong with that! I just find it so cute. And I envy your sister so much Mr. Braginsky-Jones."
Alfred huffed at the caseworker's drooling over Matthew, thinking it rather unbecoming and spoke up. "So I am thinking you want my story too?"
"Yes Alfred, go ahead." She said.
"Well Mattie and I were adopted as kids and while I don't know why my fathers are still married, they did give me a lot of good opportunities that like Ivan, I want to give them to kids who may not be so lucky. I don't know my birth parents nor why Mattie and I had different last names growing up but yeah. I think I would be a good dad. And Ivan would be an excellent Papa himself."
The caseworker noted down what both men had said and smiled. "Well it will take a little while for all this to go into the system. Adoption these days is not like going to some Orphanarium and getting 200 big ones from the government. Yes, some people come here like that and their file is shredded with extreme prejudice. However, I will look at international adoption but from Russia, well, laws may not allow that…" Ivan looked despondent. "But we may be able to find something to work with you. She noticed a new file in the database. "Would you adopt two kids?"
"Yeah!" Alfred said.
"There's a few sets of siblings I don't want broken up. Let me go through our files and see what matches. I will call you when we have some matches and you can pick a child and we will work on all the legal paperwork. So pretty much you guys impressed me. You have my permission to adopt." She shook Alfred and Ivan's hands. "And Alfred tell your brother I said hi and that his wife is so lucky."
"Will do…." Alfred smiled awkwardly as they left the meeting knowing that soon they could have a child or maybe children of their own.
