Morgan knew he would have to talk to Spencer about what happened eventually, but he was really dreading it. He didn't want to make his son relive that trauma, and he honestly wasn't sure he could stomach him talking about it.
He decided to put off that talk for a few days, just until Spencer was doing a bit better. The boy had been high as a kite on pain medication for the first day or two, so he wasn't really lucid enough. The days after that were mostly spent sleeping, though not a medicated sleep. Now he was fully awake and aware, so Morgan had no excuse to put it off any longer.
"Spencer?"
Spencer was sitting in his hospital bed eating jello. He quickly chewed the bite that was already in his mouth and swallowed. "Yeah?"
"We need to talk about what happened."
Spencer tensed and shut his eyes. He didn't want to talk about it. Morgan saw this and leaned forward to hold his hand. "I know it's hard buddy but the team and I need to know what happened. Talking about it might make you feel better too."
Spencer opened his eyes and gripped Morgan's hand tighter. "O-okay..."
Morgan gave the boy a warm smile. "Okay buddy. Let's start with what happened at the BAU."
Spencer quickly turned with wide eyes. How did he know about that! Was he mad that he lied? Tears quickly made their way into the child's eyes. "I'm sorry..."
Morgan rubbed comforting circles on the boy's back. "Why are you sorry?"
"I l-lied to you..."
"Don't worry buddy I'm not upset that you lied. Just tell me what happened."
"O-okay..." Spencer sniffled and rubbed his hand to his eye. "I was going to Auntie Penelope's r-room like you said to but then he grabbed m-me. He changed his hair but I could tell it was him..." Morgan could feel Spencer shiver when he thought about the man's soulless eyes.
"Then he d-dragged me into the closet. He had a kn-knife… I wanted to y-yell for you but he said he'd… he'd g-gut me."
Tears were cascading down the boy's cheeks as he told the story. Morgan was trying his very best to stay calm for Spencer, but his anger towards Hobbs was making that really difficult. "Go on buddy, he can't hurt you now." He said in a tight voice.
"H-he said he was gonna g-get me soon... Then he said we could s-still have some f-fun..." A loud sob broke out of the boy's mouth. "But it w-wasn't fun! I-I didn't have fun! Believe me! I didn't like it! I didn't!"
Morgan pulled the openly sobbing boy onto his lap and hugged him close. "I know you didn't, buddy. What did he do?"
"He made me s-suck his th-thingy..."
The agent tightened his hug. He couldn't believe that had happened right under his nose. "What else did he do baby?"
"H-he heard you c-calling my name… He said if I t-told he would k-kill my new family… He said he'd kill you and while you… while you b-bled to death he'd h-hurt me in front of you and then kill m-me…"
Morgan had to close his eyes and take a minute to compose himself after hearing that. He let out a strangled sigh before speaking. "Baby, I am so sorry that that happened. He can't hurt you anymore."
Spencer was crying hysterically. "I'm sorry I lied! I c-couldn't let him hurt y-you or anybody! But then he hurt you anyway! I'm so sorry!"
Morgan pulled the crying child off of him so that he could look him in the eyes. "Spencer. I understand why you lied. I'm not mad. But you don't have to protect me or the team. It's our job to protect you. Not the other way around."
Spencer mutely nodded while rubbing his hand to his face in an attempt to remove his tears. "Okay Spencer. I need you to tell me about when he took you now."
Spencer tensed, but spoke anyway through his sobs and hiccups. "I woke up f-from a nightmare. I thought it w-was you. But then he got closer and I-I could see his f-face. I y-yelled for you but he said you w-was sleeping. Why d-didn't you g-get up?"
Morgan sighed. "I'm sorry buddy. He put me to sleep with a chemical so I couldn't wake up for a while."
Spencer nodded sadly. "Was it chloroform?
Morgan chuckled and gently ruffled the boy's hair. Damn this kid is smart. "Yeah, it was chloroform." He waited for a moment for Spencer to continue, but he never did. "What happened next baby?"
Spencer shifted uncomfortably on his lap. "I don't wanna tell you..."
Morgan knew exactly what Spencer didn't want to tell him. He hated that his little boy had to go through that yet again. "Did he, uh, did he hurt your bottom?" Spencer nodded against his chest. "Okay. Just tell me what happened after that."
"After he… after he finished... he ch-choked me. I couldn't breathe a-and I passed out… When I woke up I was in the basement. He said I n-needed to be p-p-punished… I tried to hide but he caught me… He hung me from the ceiling and he took out the w-whip. I h-hate the whip..."
Morgan tightened his hold on the boy, rocking him gently. "I know baby. I know. He can't hurt you anymore. You're safe."
"He s-said he was gonna g-give me 85 l-lashes… I was s-so scared… I never got 85 b-before..."
Morgan couldn't believe the words his son was saying. 85! He's not even 6 years old! How could someone hurt him like this. He didn't say anything though, he needed to let Spencer speak.
"I didn't a-actually get to 85 though. I only got to 43. He stopped when he heard the sirens. He t-took out the kn-knife and started cutting me… Then he p-put it on my neck. I thought I was g-gonna die… He c-cut my throat but not enough to k-kill me… It still really hurt!" Spencer's hands moved up to cup his neck as a new round of tears came. "I thought I was g-gonna d-die! I was so scared!"
Morgan continued rocking, trying to sooth the hysterical child. "Shhh it's okay baby. I've got you. You're safe."
"Then you came but he s-stabbed me with the knife. I don't remember after that..."
"That's okay bud. All that matters is that you didn't die and you are safe here with me. Hobbs is gone and can never hurt you again. I'm so sorry I didn't protect you."
"It's okay. I know if he didn't use the chloroform you would've come and saved me..."
Morgan kissed the top of the child's head. "Yeah baby I would've. I'm still sorry though."
They sat in silence for a moment, just enjoying being together, while Spencer calmed down. After a while Morgan broke the silence. "Spencer, I'm so proud of you."
Spencer pushed away from the man's chest so that he could see his face. "Why?"
"Because you have been so brave through all of this. You're such a strong little boy and I am so happy that you are in my life."
Spencer started tearing up again, but this time they were tears of joy. "I love you daddy."
Morgan pulled him in for yet another hug. "I love you too Spencer."
