Taste - Betty Who

"Owen" She whispers in the dark.

"Yeah?"

"I can't sleep."

"Me neither"

"Are you drunk?"

"No. Are you?"

"No" She responds, giggling.

"We're bad at setting boundaries." He says as he rolls over closer to her.

"Maybe we just need to get it out of our system"

"Maybe" he says. She can see his blue eyes glittering in the darkness.

"No, no you know what. We can do this. We're friends."

"We are"

She rolls over to her side away from him. She stares out the window for a second and sighs. "Do friends spoon each other?"

"Sure, they do." Owen answers as he scoots even closer to her. He wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her up against him. "Friends spoon."

"Okay" She'll settle for spooning because maybe she'll fall asleep.

But the truth is she's wide awake because Owen is here. And she's excited at the prospect of having Owen around more. She daydreams about more dancing in the kitchen, more long conversations by the fire, more movie nights with the kids.

"Breathe" Owen says, giving her a squeeze. "And close your eyes"

"Owen…" she whispers again "What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking that our rules are stupid." He whispers back. His hand reaching down and shimmies it between her legs. She drapes her legs over him to give him space.

"Me too" she says "What else are you thinking about?"

"That maybe tonight we can bend the rules a little"

"Are we breaking rules right now?" She says. She bites her lip.

"Do friends do this?"

"Okay" she says, she's starting to pant a little. His hands doing miracles between her legs. "Friends normally do not. But friends could"

"Mhmmm. So can I keep going?"

"It would really be upsetting if you stopped." She breathes out. She feels his lips against her neck. He sucks while he slips in a finger between her legs. She also feels him getting hard against her back. She smirks because it's always been easy for them.

"Then I won't stop. I don't want to upset you" He mutters against her neck. She reaches behind her and slips her hand into his boxers, wrapping her hand around him. "Teddy" he whispers.

"Yeah?"

"Fuck"

"I know"

They don't to talk about it anymore. They both want this. He squirms under her touch. She wriggles from his arms and rolls him onto his back. She kisses him, taking charge, before he could say anything else. She crawls down, pulling his boxers down with her. She replaces her hand with her mouth and he lets out a grunt. He runs his hands through her hair and guides her head and she bobs gently, torturing him—or pleasuring, one can argue.

"Teddy…." He whispers.

"Mm?" She tries to make sound, the vibration sending him over the edge.

"C'mere"

"Mmm"

"Please"

"Mmm"

"Please" He pants "Teddy, please"

She moves her mouth off of him, and swiftly takes off her pajama pants and crawls back up and intertwines her fingers with his and pins his hands above his head as she sinks down on him. She moves her body, totally in control of him. It's one of her favorite things, when he's completely surrendered to her. He's all hers. Tonight she is in control. She is in control of him. Of her thoughts. Of her emotions. It feels like she can conquer anything. She lets her sweat drip on him. Her breasts linger by his face. She can see and feel his hunger. She rides him, gliding gently, feeling her throb deep in her. She clenches in response and he releases her grunt. She just smirks as he spills in her, his body tensed under her, then a moan of relief. His mouth reaches for her breasts as she lowers them closer to him. Her hands holding onto his tightly.

"Fuck" He whispers

"Good." She says, lowering for a kiss, taking his lower lip between her teeth, sucking hid lower lip hard.

"Teddy" he whispers again as he pants, catching his breath. "Fuck"

"I love you" She whispers against his lips before pulling away.

"I love you" He whispers back, hungrily taking her lips against his, almost growling.

She clenches and lifts herself off from him, hitting every spot. He catches her into his arms and pulls her close. They both fall asleep peacefully, satisfied.

"I love you" he sleepily whispers again. It was the last thing she hears before drifting off to sweet slumber.

She wakes up alone in bed. Their cloud bed, as Leo likes to call it. Soft and fluffy and homey. She doesn't want to get out of it. She glances out the window and dark clouds blanket the city. She got used to the dark and cloudy, she very much welcomes it, perfect day to be cozy. She doesn't need the sunshine, though it's welcomed when it shows itself. She wakes up feeling good and tingly. His side of the bed clearly slept on. So it wasn't a dream. It was… real. And they really slept together and held each other and it felt good. She pulls his pillows into her arms and breathes it in. He was really here. He really slept here. She hears the kids giggle and some AC/DC playing in the living room. She can't help but chuckle. She gets out of bed and finds her discarded pajama bottom on the the floor and makes her way to the culprit of the noise.

"AC/DC really?" Teddy says, chuckling as she makes her way to him, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, her hands creeping under his shirt so she can feel his skin against hers. "Ooo French toast."

"We're still doing music Mondays right?"

"Correct, but AC/DC?" She asks, glancing at the kids who are dancing around the living room as if You Shook Me All Night Long was being performed by The Wiggles.

"So they're well-rounded"

"You shook me all night long last night" Teddy whispers in his ear, gently grazing his earlobe with her teeth.

"We are on a highway to hell aren't we?" He responds, laughing, which makes Teddy let out a laugh.

"Shut up" she says, pulling herself away from him after leaving a kiss on his neck.

"Hey so.. I was thinking." He says, catching her hand and pulling her close to him again before she could walk away. "I check out of the hotel and get my stuff and move back in tonight."

"Yes, I like that." Leaning against him, reaching for a kiss. She knows she's taking a risk because he could easily push her off and give her the we're friends speech. But to her surprise, he cradles her face and deepens the kiss.

"Nice kiss, best friend" He says as he pulls away.

"Back at ya" She says as she saunters away to join the kids' dance party. He gives her a little tap on the butt before going back to the French toast.

She picks up Allison and dances around with her, singing along to the song. "The walls were shakin', the Earth was quakin'…."

"Yep, yep. Inappropriate for toddlers" he laughs and walks over to his phone and changes the music to some nursery rhyme.

Teddy just laughs and continues dancing with Allison and Leo even to the Hokey Pokey.

"One can argue that the Hokey Pokey is also inappropriate" Teddy calls out.

"God, Theodora" He sighs, faking exasperation and changes it to some disney playlist. "Don't ruin Disney, please."

"Fine." She says sitting on the floor, pulling both kids into her lap. "Daddy's coming home, are you guys excited?"

"Yes!" Leo exclaims, Allison just says, 'dada' while clapping her hands.

She's excited too. Because things are looking up. Things are getting better. And she's not going to make the same mistakes. She's not risking losing them ever again.

"Does it feel good?" Teddy asks. She's drawing little shapes on his chest. He has his arm around her, her head on his chest. His fingers in her hair.

"What does?"

"To be back home?"

"Yeah, it does"

"Yeah" She sighs. Her leg anxiously rubs against his. "It's nice to have you home"

"Today was fun"

"Mhhm" she says, shifting so she can kiss his neck

"Are you okay? I mean, this is nice, really good. But I just want to make sure you feel good and not like—"

"—I'm good. I haven't felt this good in a while. And it's not just the sex, just… everything."

"Good, that's good" He leans for a kiss, cradling her head.

"What are we doing though…"

"We're….just here. I'm worried about putting a label on it which is ridiculous because we are adults, but… do we have to define this? Because there's no.. definition." He says, staring into her eyes, searching for a change in emotion.

"No, there isn't. I'm sorry… for you know.. everything"

"I know. I know. It's all in the past and there are bigger things in this world."

"Like?"

Owen chuckles "Like…" He rolls Teddy and hovers over her "Like you, me, this…"

"Are we going to be better at being just friends"

"Shh" He laughs "I'm enjoying it. Are you enjoying it?"

"I am. Are you sure about this?" She says, reaching for his face.

"Are you going to ask me every time?"

"I just don't want to take advantage—you said—"

"I know what I said. But… maybe I just said that. Maybe I want more. Maybe I can give more than friendship."

"Okay."

"So if you're enjoying this, and I'm enjoying this… can we just… let ourselves enjoy it?"

Teddy just nods and lets go of his face. He leans down to kiss her, his body blanketing hers.

"I will always be in love with you." He says, trailing kissing down her body in between each other. "So please, just let me."

"Okay" She whispers as she arches her back and spreads her legs for him.

"What are you doing" Teddy chuckles at the sight in front of her. She walked into the living room and Leo is sitting in a corner eating his crackers. Owen is doing push ups. And Allison is mimicking her father the best she can. Teddy laughs and plops herself next to Leo, who hands her a cracker.

"I was doing push ups and your daughter is just showing off" They chuckle at Allison's own version of push ups "Come on, soldier, give us 5 more" He says to Allison who was just giggling and enjoying the attention.

"Leo can you count to five for Allison?" Teddy says, nudging their son.

"One!" He starts, showing off his counting skills "Two!" he counts but Allison loses interest once Owen stops.

Owen and Teddy just look at each other laughing.

"This was much better than when she was trying to climb me" Owen says.

She watches him sit on the floor across from her and pulls Allison into his lap and nuzzles their daughter.

"So I was thinking…." He starts and looking into her eyes.

"Yes….?"

"That maybe we should go on a date tonight if you're up for it?" He says "I mean, maybe mom can come over and watch the kids, you and I do something fun?"

She lights up, excited at the thought. They haven't really gone on real dates. "Yes! What do you have in mind?"

"Just.. casual fun stuff. I have some ideas I wanna surprise you."

"Okay!"

"Okay, good."

"Is that why you're doing some push ups?" She asks, winking. "So your biceps are bulging tonight, your chest all strong" she said reaching for his arms.

"Go away." He jokes swatting her away. She just laughs and takes Leo with her and disappears into the kitchen

"Come on, Leo. You and I are gonna get a snack because that's more fun." She says taking their son with her, leaving the father and daughter to their push ups.

She stands in the middle of the closet staring at her clothes. She really doesn't know what he meant by casual, but she settles on jeans and a sweater and comfortable, but really cute shoes. She's excited and giddy because he seems excited and giddy. She hasn't seen Owen like this ever, so she hypes herself up. She also wants to look good for him.

She notices him standing by the door, smirking, watching her.

"You look good"

"So do you, bicep man."

"Shut up" He laughs "Mom's here and the kids have already forgotten I exist so.. whenever you're ready."

"I'm ready"

They say goodbye to the kids and Owen drags her out of the house before she tries to take the kids with them.

"So what are we doing" Teddy says, looking at Owen as they drive away of their home.

"So I was thinking if fun Covid-friendly things to do. And I thought of a really fun activity."

"Please don't say drive-in movie"

"No" He says smirking "That doesn't sound exciting. We'll end up making out the entire time. We can do that at home"

"What is it"

"So I was thinking getting tacos at that truck that you love and—"

"Tacos?"

"Will you let me finish—"

"Perfect, yes."

"Okay tacos and mini-golf"

"Okay that's actually a really good idea. But—"

"But?"

"Don't you think it's weird to have two adults at a mini-golf"

"See, that's where you're wrong. I found a twenty one plus Mini—"

"Say no more. Adult mini-golf"

"So you're in?"

She takes his hand and pulls it onto her lap and gives it a squeeze. "Of course!"

They have never done this. They have not gone on a proper date, ever. Sure there's a dinner here and there but they never considered it a date. They got together and then there was a newborn and Leo and selling a house and buying a house and furnishing a house and then a catastrophe and then a global pandemic. So they never had time to date.

Things were scary for her for a while and instead of just talking to someone about her fears, she decided to self-destruct. But now she's doing the work and they're dating and they're having fun. She's excited for the prospect of dating him. They know each other so well and yet there is still so much to learn about each other.

They sit on the bench where they had their first kiss years ago. It was overlooking Seattle, their food between them. The park was basically empty. It's still light out but the sun was about to set. They talked and they laughed and they teased each other like they're just best friends again, but this time there was more comfort, more affection. And Teddy stares at him because he looked good and besides the superficial, he's not a terrible guy. He's not perfect but he's a really good guy. And she feels comfort in knowing that now he's really there for her and only her and now all she needs to do is focus on him and only him because he's the only one that matters.

They eventually got to the mini-golf. The first few rounds were fun and she couldn't help it but she turns into a competitive monster.

"Oh no" Owen says while staring at her.

"Oh no what?"

"You got your game face on."

"Of course I do"

"This is mini-golf, not the PGA finals"

"Shut up" She says rolling her eyes as she positions herself with the golf club.

She gets a hole in one and thrusts her club over her head victoriously, taunting Owen a little. He just chuckles at her and pulls her close to him by the waist.

"This is the best date ever" He whispers against her lips.

"You're just trying to distract me because you're losing"

"Okay, yeah but I win at everything else because I have you and I have our little munchkins at home"

She leans in for another kiss and chuckles. "Okay but we're going to finish this game because I'm definitely winning."

"I knew I should have picked a drive-in move instead" He chuckles as he follows her to the next course.

apparently scenes of them as a family is too much to ask but like just give them a spin off. lol. also why is it so hard for them to write a happy couple. like it's possible. (ok im gonna stop ranting now)
