Writing on the Wall

Chapter 30: To the Letter

(:)(A)(:)

Two days after Inuyasha's unexpected visit, Kaede receives a letter. There is no return address, but her name and house number are written by a barely-legible hand and she has her suspicions.

Kaede stares at it longer than she should. When Kikyo asks why her hands are shaking, she laughs it off and blames old age—tucking the letter away from her daughter's curious eyes. Later, after Kikyo has gone home, she finds her favorite spot in the garden and pulls the letter from the safety of her sleeve.

Her body trembles; a choked laugh, roughened by decades of uncertainty, spills from her aged lips. A lone bird sings in the branches above her—the only witness to her tears and the whispered 'thank you' that carries on the wind. The words look up at her:

Kaede,

You were right.

—I.

AN: Short and sweet. Because Kaede needed an extra bit of love.

Also, thank you to whomever nominated me for the Inuyasha Fandom Awards on tumblr for Best Serial and Best Dark! I am both thrilled and flattered. :'D
