Red doesn't talk that much.

"Rookidee use Drill Peck!"

"Sobble use Water Gun!"

A gang of Growlithe has been making their way closer to Vermillion City, and Goh and Chloe had gone out to stop them.

"Nine!" An Arcanine roared, a flamethrower shooting towards them.

As the trainers and their Pokémon jumped out of the way, Chloe turned to Goh.

"Any pokeballs left?" Chloe asked.

"Sorry, I'm fresh out, maybe you should've brought some." Goh complainedz

"Then we keep fighting." Chloe said. "Rookidee use Beat Up!"

"Sobble use Quick Attack!"

The Pokémon sped around the oncoming fire types, only to be pinned by the Arcanine.

"No!" Goh and Chloe shouted in unison.

A bright light illuminating from underneath Arcanine's paws made it jump back.

"Squire!"

"Drizz!"

"They evolved!" Chloe said pulling out her phone.

'Corvisquire the Raven Pokémon. Smart enough to use tools in battle, these Pokémon have been seen picking up rocks and flinging them or using ropes to tie up their opponents.'

'Drizzile the Water Lizard Pokémon. A clever combatant, this Pokémon battles using water balloons created with moisture secreted from its palms.'

"Corvisquire use Air Slash!"

"Drizzile use Water Pulse!"

The newly evolved Pokémon gave the two trainers a slight edge, but even that wasn't enough to take out the Arcanine. The Arcanine began speeding towards them, fire coming from its fangs.

"Pikachu use Quick Attack!"

Pikachu slammed into the Arcanine knocking it back.

"It couldn't be." Chloe said shocked.

"Did you miss me?" Ash asked, running up.

"Yeah but, good news, my aim is getting better." Goh said.

"The emotional reunion can wait until later, we still have these guys to deal with." Chloe pointed out.

"Pikachu use Thunderbolt!"

"Drizzile use Water Pulse!"

"Corvisquire use Air Slash!"

The added power seemed to do the trick, as the gang of Fire types backed of back to where they came from.

"So when'd you get back?" Chloe asked, as they made their way back.

"Yesterday morning, spent the day in Pallet Town." Ash said.

"Did your mysterious note lead you to Serena?" Goh asked sarcastically.

"Yep, found and rescued her." Ash said.

"Then where is she?" Goh asked.

"In Kalos with her family." Ash said, a bit confused.

"Okay, sure." Goh said, not entirely believing Ash.

"Goh, Chloe, you're back sooner than expected." Professor Cerise said.

"Well we had some help." Chloe admitted.

"Nothing wrong with getting some help, you can't do everything on your own." Professor Cerise said. "Go on in and head to the lab, Ren found something I'd like you two to look into."

Ash watched as Goh and Chloe headed into the lab. He knew it would be like this, he'd left on not so great terms.

"So are you going to stand there all day, or are you going to come in so we can talk." Professor Cerise said sternly.

"Me?" Ash asked.

"No, the other young trainer that helped my lab assistants. Yes you, we have some things to talk about." Professor Cerise said.

Ash was led into the Professor's private office, many of the team's accomplishments hung on the walls.

"So, it's been a while." Professor Cerise said.

"Yeah, last time we spoke I quit." Ash said, clearing the elephant in the room.

"That you did, so why should I give you the position back." Professor Cerise questioned.

"I'm not asking for your forgiveness, just like I didn't ask for your permission. I've managed before, and I can manage again on my own." Ash said calmly.

"Was my hunch correct, was it a trap?" Professor Cerise asked.

"No, the lead was good. I accomplished my mission." Ash said.

"So why'd you come back here?" Professor Cerise asked.

"Will you give me just a moment." Ash said, turning around, and quickly opening the door. Goh and Chloe falling into the room.

"I thought this would have gone without saying that this is a private matter." Professor Cerise said.

Goh and Chloe clambered over each other trying to get out of the room as quick as possible.

"Why did I return? For the same reason I left, my friends needed me." Ash said. "I've had the honor of being with so many different trainers with so many different goals. The problem is, when you have two different destinations, eventually you have to go your separate ways."

"You haven't answered my initial question, why should I let you back onto the team?" Professor Cerise asked.

"Because you know they need me. Maybe not today, or tomorrow but they still need me, and I still need them." Ash said.

"You'll have a trial run, to see how you do readjusting to the new dynamic, let me get your phone for you." Professor Cerise said.

"No need." Ash said, pulling out his yellow and black Rotom Phone.

"So I see, let me set it up for the lab, and I'll let you get settled in again." Professor Cerise said, hooking it into the mainframe. "Do you need help getting your things from Pallet?"

"No, they're in a room at the Pokemon Center right now." Ash said.

"You knew I'd let you back in." Professor Cerise said.

"In all honesty, I thought I'd have to bring it all back home, I hoped you'd let me back in." Ash admitted.

'Knock knock'

"Sir, I know you said that the Snorlax were a minor project, but I think that it might be something more than that. Similar sightings of Snorlax could very well indicate that it's a migration pattern spanning generations." A woman's voice rambled.

"Eva, we've talked about this." Professor Cerise said.

"Sorry, sorry." Eva said apologetically.

Ash looked at this new person, a tall but built woman with white hair, she seemed young around Sonia and Leon's age though.

"Eva, this is Ash, he'll be doing a trial run as a research assistant. Ash this is Eva a grad student doing her work study with the lab." Professor Cerise said, introducing the two.

"Wait Ash like the one who did the initial research on these Snorlax. What a coincidence, unless it's not! What happened, why did you leave, why did you come back, where did you go, is there a reason why no one talks about you?" Eva rambled off.

"Eva, you're doing it again." Professor Cerise sighed.

"Sorry, I'm sure we'll talk later, I'm Eva, except you knew that already, he introduced us, I should get going." Eva said, leaving the office.

"Please be patient with her, she very smart and talented, just a bit…". Professor Cerise struggled to find the right word.

"Energetic?" Ash added.

"Exactly." Professor Cerise responded.

A bit later

"So Ashley, welcome back." Goh said with a pinch of anger.

"You could've knocked." Ash said, putting some of his things away.

"Understand this, you left, and I took over field work. No more doing things your way, you're the bottom research assistant now, so what I say goes, and if you don't like it leave." Goh stated.

Before Ash could respond, Goh was out the door, having left the room.

"Nice to see you too." Ash said sarcastically.
