Casey and Dawson had just gotten their blood work done to see if either of them was a match for Shelby. They decided to go up and visit with Kelly and Shelby.
They had little Emily with them. They knocked on Shelby's door.
"come in." Kelly said from the other side.
The couple opened the door and stepped inside. "Hey Severide."
"Hey guys." Kelly was still laying in the bed next to Shelby. She was asleep. "You guys brought Emily?"
"Of course." Dawson sat the baby carrier on the couch. She got Emily out of the carrier and handed her to Kelly.
Kelly cradled the little girl in his arms. She was looking right up at Kelly. "Hey princess." She started making cooing noises at Kelly.
Shelby must of heard her because she started to wake up.
"Hey babe. Look who is here."
Shelby opened her eyes to see sweet little Emily in Kelly's arms. "Awe hi sweetpea." Shelby smiled at the little girl. She then noticed Casey and Dawson. "Hey guys."
"Hey girl. How you feeling?" Dawson and Casey stepped up to the side of her bed.
"Like a million bucks."
Everyone laughed at her comment. Shelby was looking even more weak and was becoming more yellow. "We just did our blood test. So hopefully one of us is a match."
"Thank you guys but you didn't have too."
Matt grabbed ahold of her hand and give it a squeeze. "Of course we did. You are family."
Shelby could feel the tears starting to form again. She never felt like she had a family when she was younger but now here she is, on deaths door and surrounded by people who love her.
"I'm sorry guys. This is all my fault." Shelby started crying.
"Hey hey. No it's not it's okay." Dawson hugged her best friend.
"If I would of been stronger. And not turned to drugs."
"Hey." Dawson made Shelby look at her. "You are the strongest person I know. Anyone else who has gone through what you have would of given up a long time ago. You got sober and you got clean."
There was a knock at Shelby's door and then Dr. Halstead stepped into her room. "Hey Shelby."
"Hey Will."
Will closed the door and then turned to face her. He had his serious face on. "Shelby I'm sorry. But everyone we have tested is not a match."
"What how can that be?" Kelly was in shock. This couldn't be happening. Not after everyone he called.
"It's just how it is sometimes. Not everyone is a match and sometimes it can take years to find one. I am sorry."
"Thank You Will."
"But don't think I have given up. We will keep looking."
"I understand."
Will nodded and then left the room. Shelby was coming to terms with what was happening but Kelly didn't want to believe it. He was still trying to think of everything that could be done.
Kelly, Casey, and Dawson were having a conversation all on there own. Shelby was just sitting there in silence.
"I want to go home."
The three of them stopped talking and looked at Shelby. "What?"
"I want to go home. I don't want to sit here and wait to die."
"Shelby but at home they may not get to you in time."
"Kelly please. I don't want to spend my last days here. I want to be home and in our bed."
"I..." Kelly didn't know what to say. He wasn't ready to give up but he wanted to do what she wanted. "Give them 2 more days and then I will talk to Will about letting you go home?"
"Kelly..."
"Shelby please. For me? For Emily?" Kelly's eyes were begging her to keep fighting but Shelby didn't know how much fight she had left in her. She had been fighting all of her life.
"Okay. 2 days but then I want to go home."
"You got it." Kelly placed a kiss to her forehead. "Thank you."
Casey and Dawson stuck around for a while longer but Emily soon started to become tired and cranky. The couple placed Emily back in her carrier and took her home with them.
The rest of 51 made appearances to Shelby's room over the next 24 hours to say hi and check to see how she was doing. She was starting to sleep a lot more. Kelly had not left the hospital since she got there.
Chief Boden and Casey were visiting. Shelby was asleep but Kelly was awake and talking to them.
"How are you doing Severide?"
"Honestly Chief I don't know how I am holding it all together."
"She's strong Kelly. She will beat this."
"I hope so Chief but I think she's given up. She just doesn't seem to have much fight left in her." Kelly was looking down at the girl in his arms.
Chief Boden was getting ready to say something but then Dr. Halstead entered the room.
"Chief. Casey." Will nodded to both men. "Is she asleep?"
"Yes she has been most of the day."
"Kelly can you step over here with me?"
"Sure." Kelly got up from Shelby's side and joined Will in the corner of the room. Boden and Casey also joined in.
"We may have found a match."
Kelly's eyes grew big and a smile came across his face. "When can we do the surgery?"
Dr. Halstead's expression didn't change. "It's a very small chance it will work. It's the closest match we have found. But the liver also matches to that of a 6 year old boy who is just below her on the transplant list."
"So what does that mean?"
"The board may decide to give it to the little boy instead. Considering her history."
"Your kidding me right? Cant they split it between them or something?" Kelly was getting visibly upset. Chief Boden and Casey both put a hand on Kelly's shoulder.
"I wish it were that easy Kelly." Will absolutely hated giving bad news. Especially when it was to people he considered friends.
"Give it to the little boy." Everyone turned to look at Shelby. They hadn't noticed she had woken up and was listening in on the conversation.
"Shelby?"
"Kelly no. I am not taking something from a little boy who hasn't even gotten to live yet."
"But what about you? What about Emily?"
"Kelly I know you don't understand right now because you are blinded by wanting to save me. But one day you will understand why I did this." Shelby moved her eyes to look at Will. "I do not want the liver."
"Are you sure? I will fight for you. I will talk to the board all night if I have too."
Shelby held up a hand to get Will to stop talking. "Thank you Will but it's alright." Shelby smiled a weak smile.
"Okay. I will let the board know." Dr. Halstead excused himself.
"So you've just giving up?! You're not going to fight anymore?!" Kelly was angry and crying.
"Kelly, Will told me days ago that my chances of beating this were slim to none. I am not risking getting the transplant and then it not work. That will result in me dying and that little boy."
Kelly was trying to understand but he so blinded but his own wants. He wasn't ready to lose her. Not when it finally felt like they were in a good place.
"Kelly please. Just be here with me. I don't want to fight anymore."
Kelly nodded. He went and laid back down with her. Wrapping her up in his arms. Kelly let the tears flow as he held onto her.
Chief and Casey both left to allow the two some alone time.
Kelly and Shelby fell asleep in each other's arms that night. Neither of them wanting to let go.
Then it happened.
Around 3am that morning Kelly was woken up by a loud beeping sound. It took Kelly a second to figure out what was happening.
Suddenly it hit him that it was Shelby's heart monitor. Kelly began to try and shake her awake. "Shelby? Babe please wake up!"
When she didn't respond Kelly hit the nurses button. Kelly began to try and do CPR. The tears already began flowing down his face.
A few nurses and Dr. Halstead came running into the room.
Kelly was working furiously to get her to breath against. "You have to help her!"
"Kelly we can't."
"What do you mean?" Kelly was still doing compressions.
"Kelly she signed a DNR."
Kelly's heart dropped. "No. That's not what she wanted!"
Dr. Halstead walked over and wrapped his arms around Kelly to get him to stop compressions. "Kelly it is what she wanted. She didn't want to be hooked up to machines. You gotta let her go."
Kelly collapsed to the floor and started crying. Will was holding Kelly and trying to get him to calm down. The nurses came over and started to turn off the machines.
The only sound you could hear was Kelly sobbing. It wasn't suppose to end this way. They were supposed to be together forever.
