The Way Forward - Chapter 31: Shibuya Station

.

Saturday, July 9 (Continued):

Yoyogi Park:

Kids are fascinating. Sota-kun's wearing a Pokemon mask and scooping bouncy balls out of a pool of water with a paper scoop. Why do they find these games fun? At least it's not all random like that 'Chutes and Ladders' game. I introduced him to a few of the games Tamaki made us play, but not that one. Never that one.

"Look Uncle Kyoya. I got 23!"

Great. Now I have to explain to Fuyumi why I brought her son back with 23 bouncy balls. At least it's not goldfish.

"Good for you." The person running the game gave him a bag filled with his winnings. "Having fun?"

"Yeah!" He grabbed my hand and pulled me to another game. "Ring toss. Can you do it, Uncle Kyoya?"

Guess I'm tossing rings at cheap toys.

.

Between Kyoya-sama's and Sota-sama's guard details, we had enough to assign a guard just to take pictures. Fuyumi-sama asked us to text some back to her throughout the day. So far, my favorite is Tachibana shooting corks at toys to get Sota-sama a plushy. I'll have it printed and posted in security headquarters.

There were several cute ones of Sota-sama too.

Just then, my earpiece squawked, "Bombing at Shibuya Station. Get the primaries out."

Fuck.

.

"Kyoya-sama," Tachibana whispered in my ear, "There's been a bombing at Shibuya Station." My eyes focused on Sota-kun eating more dango. "It's far enough away to not be an immediate threat, but we need to get you and Sota-sama out before we're trapped here."

"I'll suggest a toy store and Lego. I don't want him to know there's a problem."

.

.

Shibuya Station:

"Where's Haruhi! Fucking find her!"

I tuned out Hikaru-sama and concentrated on the drone footage. I had her a second ago then several explosions went off one right after the other.

"Smoke coming from several trashcans," I reported through the earpieces.

"What the fuck does that matter? She's not in a fucking trashcan. Find her!"

Without taking my eyes off the screen, I hardened my voice and said, "Hikaru-sama, you must calm down and be quiet. You are ruining my concentration. I need it to find Haruhi-sama."

He huffed and sat back down. Good. Now I can ignore him.

"There's her briefcase!" His scream hurt my ear despite the earpiece.

I reported its location and continued to sweep the crowd.

.

"EIJI!"

"KAORU!"

"Shut up and move Girl!"

He was huge. The crowd's moving too fast. I gave up and was swept away with them.

.

Chika's Room, Morinozuka Estate:

"On Wall Street yesterday, the DOW…"

"We interrupt this regularly scheduled program with urgent news. Four explosions have been reported at Shibuya Station. Information is spotty and not confirmed. Police and reporters are on their way.

"Again, four explosions…"

That's where Haruhi-senpai is.

I took off at a dead run to the security offices.

.

xXx

.

Shibuya Station:

"Fuck this!" We're not going to find her with that fucking drone.

I bolted out of the trailer, pushing my way through security. Must have startled them because I got through.

The smoke immediately stung my eyes, and people were running everywhere in panic.

I picked a direction and ran.

.

Security Earpiece Conversation (Guards referred to by the family they work for):

Eiji: "Track Haruhi-sama with her phone. It was in her pocket."

Hitachiin_1: "Hikaru-sama just ran out of the drone trailer."

Hitachiin_2: "Shit. You didn't stop him!?"

Hitachiin_1: "My orders were to say with the trailer. Tried to grab him, but he surprised us."

Hitachiin_2: "We'll deal with you when this is over. Stay with the trailer."

Morinozuka_1: "Found the briefcase. Phone's in it."

Eiji: "Switch to shoe locater."

Morinozuka_2: "Can't. She's wearing wardrobe shoes."

Eiji: Dammit. I knew that. "Spread out. Follow the crowds. Most likely was swept away with them."

Hitachiin_3: "Can confirm bombs were in trashcans. Looks random. High probability protest was the target."

Hitachiin_2: "All photographers found. Currently away from trashcans, under guard, taking pictures for police."

Hitachiin_3: "Can't find Kaoru-sama or the director."

Hitachiin_2: "Keep looking."

.

People everywhere, and I'm being pushed along with the crowd.

"Aaaahhhhh!"

I turned just in time to see a short brunette in a suit pushed to the ground by some panicked idiot.

Couldn't get to her. Too far away.

.

xXx

.

Bun Bun's Bakery:

"I'm surprised you like those cake coffees."

"Me too. I like sweets, but they usually aren't my first choice." I took Yuki-chan's hand as we walked down the sidewalk window shopping. "I couldn't drink them every day, but they aren't bad as a treat."

"Isn't there a Bun Bun's on campus?"

"Yes. I'll have to be careful, or you'll be marrying a fat doctor." Her sweet laugh carried across the street, and an older couple glanced at us and smiled. When I picked Yuki-chan from all those marriage contracts, I had no idea I'd enjoy spending time with her this much.

"Akito-kun?" She pointed to a store across the street, "There's a furniture store. Before we start decorating, maybe we should make sure we agree on the style."

"Great idea."

.

.

Security Office, Morinozuka Estate:

I burst into the room, not caring what damage I did to the door. "Haruhi-senpai's at Shibuya Station! It's been bombed!"

Oshiro-san stood in front of several monitors, and I saw smoke and chaos. "We know. Eiji reported it immediately."

"Have they evacuated?"

He turned to me, his eyes narrowed, "We can't find her."

.

"You can't find her?" Akira said as both of us walked in. What happened to the door?

"No, Sir. Not yet."

"Explain."

"She was in the crowd for the photo shoot. Kaoru-sama wanted candid pictures. When the explosions happened, she was swept away with the crowd. She dropped her phone and is wearing wardrobe shoes. We have no way to track her."

"We have drone footage." The tech cued up the footage of Haruhi-chan walking down the street. Then reacting to what must have been the explosion. Akira took my hand and squeezed.

"Where's the sound?"

"It's a Hitachiin drone. No sound."

"Aunt Umeko, I need to go…"

"Absolutely not Yasuchika. We don't need another family member lost in that crowd. The best of our security is looking for her and will find her." He followed my orders, but clearly was angry about it.

.

.

Shibuya Station:

Can't breathe…Panic attack.

I closed my eyes and counted my breaths, trying to make them slow down.

Not working.

I opened my eyes and all I saw were feet running by. When I fell, I thought that was it. I'd be trampled. But I rolled over and hid under this bench, curled up in a ball.

I can't stay here. Too close to the noises.

I quickly crawled out and sat on the bench, pulling my legs up. "I lost a shoe. Kaoru will be upset." I took the other one off and stared at it. "Maybe he'll find it."

I took it with me and started to run with the crowd again.

"Mommy!"

"Mommy!"

I made it to the dog statue. There has to be a place to hide here.

"Mommy!"

I scooped up the little boy and kept running. He'd get trampled for sure. "It's OK Sweetheart. We'll find your Mommy, but we have to find a safe place first.

.

"Look, that girl grabbed that kid."

"Shit! That's Fujioka Haruhi."

"Who?" Must be a classmate of my girlfriend's.

"She's a model. I've seen her in magazines." She grabbed my hand and pulled. "We have to follow her." Since she was running away from the station, I went along with it.

My brother and his date were trailing behind us. I turned and yelled, "If we get separated, meet at the car!"

.

.

Kasanoda Compound:

"You're getting stronger, Young Lord."

"Yeah. Never skip leg day." I kicked the heavy bag again and smirked when Tetsuya had to take a step back.

"Just a minute." He moved away and tilted his head. Must be some security issue.

"There's been a bombing at Shibuya Station. Not sure who or how big yet."

"Motherfucker. That's where Haruhi and Kaoru are shooting his new ads."

I punched the intercom button and got the security main office. "Send half a dozen fellas over to Shibuya Station. I want to know if a syndicate set those bombs."

"Yes, Young Lord."

"And keep a lookout for Haruhi and Hitachiin Kaoru. They were there for a photoshoot."

"Yes, Young Lord. Right away."

"Fuck! Can't that chick ever stay out of trouble."

.

Pick up…pick up…pick up…

"Yeah, Bu."

"I'm on my way over. Heard about the bombing and saw a picture of Haruhi on Twitter. She's there now."

"Yep."

"Shit."

"Yep. Come to the security office when you get here."

"Sure."

"And don't text any of those idiots. They'll just want to go there and get in the way."

"No problem. Wasn't going to."

.

.

Drone Trailer, Shibuya Station:

I finally caught sight of her headed towards the dog statue and sent all available security in that direction.

Then, "I lost her in the trees."

"Keep looking."

I jumped as the door flew open with a bang. Several guards dragged the twins into the trailer kicking and screaming. The photography director followed them.

"You will stay here." Harada-san stood over them, hands on hips. "Because we had to look for you, our resources were split. Now that you're here, all of them are free to look for Haruhi-sama."

"I was looking for her, dammit!" That had to be Hikaru-sama. The other is sitting still with his head down.

"And we were searching for you. I repeat, stay here."

"He's right, Hika." Kaoru-sama grabbed his arm and pulled him to a chair. "We're only making it worse out there."

"Fuck."

"I know." He pulled out his phone. "Let's get on Twitter and check the pics and videos. Maybe we'll see her." Harada-san nodded at them and stepped back out of the trailer.

.

"Shit." I almost dropped my phone when it started ringing.

Kaoru: "Mom?"

Yuzuha: "I just heard. I was in a meeting. How are you? Are you and Hika alright? Are you hurt?"

Kaoru: "Calm down. We're fine. We're in the security trailer."

Yuzuha: "You stay there. I was so worried."

Kaoru: "They can't find Haruhi."

Yuzuha: "WHAT? What am I paying them for?"

Kaoru: "Shit, Mom, stop yelling in my ear. They're looking for her."

Yuzuha: "The damn well better find her."

Toy Store:

"Uncle Kyoya. Uncle Kyoya. Look! It's a ninja castle!"

Leave it to Sota-kun to find a set with over five thousand pieces. Fuyumi would kill me.

"That's a big set. How about something smaller?"

He frowned and turned back to the shelves. "There's a ninja city!"

With almost five thousand pieces.

"And a roller coaster! Or a pirate ship!"

This kid is killing me.

Maybe I should buy them all. It's not like I have to clean them up.

.

When my phone chimed, I dropped back and let Sota-sama's detail take over. I have my Twitter notify me for certain hashtags.

Haruhi-sama was at Shibuya Station.

I won't tell Kyoya-sama. He'll be angry later, but he can't do anything now. Hitachiin and Morinozuka security are there.

.

"Look, it's a fire station, but it looks funny."

"That's a fire station in America. They look different."

"Oh." He ran up the aisle, "There's a police station in America!"

"Do you like the 'City' sets?"

"There's a hospital."

Guess that's a yes. And much smaller than the other sets.

.

Shibuya Station:

"Mommy!"

"We'll find her. Don't worry."

We managed to get out of the crush in this doorway, but he's wiggling so much I'm afraid I'll drop him.

"Mommy!"

"Ginji!"

"Mommy!"

"Ginji!"

"Are you Ginji?" It's been so loud, and I was concentrating on finding a safe place, I hadn't asked his name yet.

"Mommy!"

"Ginji!" Her pants were torn at the knee, and her hair was wild. The woman stumbled out of the crowd, screaming, "GINJI!"

"Mommy!" He reached for her. "Mommy!"

"Ginji. Are you hurt? I thought I wouldn't find you. Oh, my baby."

Clearly this was his mother, so I handed him over. "Thank you! Thank you for saving my Ginji. I was so worried."

"He's safe with you now. I'm so happy you found us."

"I followed his voice screaming for me. I'll always know his voice." She pulled him tighter, kissing his face all over. "We're going home right now."

"Do you have a way home? I'm sure the subways are closed."

"I called my husband. He's meeting us near Yoyoji Park." She started walking, calling back over her shoulder, "Thanks again!"

As soon as she turned the corner, my legs gave out. All the adrenaline and panic left me in a wave. I needed to sit down before I fell down.

.

"She found the kid's mom."

"More like the mom found the kid."

"Lucky mom. It could have been hours with this crowd."

"Look, she can barely walk. Is she hurt?"

"She's going behind that abandoned news stand."

"Let's go check on her."

Again, my girlfriend pulled me along. We'd long lost my brother and his date. They texted us that they were at the car.

.

"There she is!"

"About time you found her."

"Hika, leave him alone. At least he found her."

That fucking drone operator. I'm going to make mom fire him. He lost Haruhi. There's no excuse. And Kaoru. It's like he thinks it's fine.

"Who's that?" Some huge guy and a girl walked behind the news stand. "Where's security?"

"They're on their way, Hikaru-sama. Please calm down."

Calm down. Calm down. Everyone here is too fucking calm.

"He's kidnapping her!" I hit the screen. That big guy picked up Haruhi and walked away with that girl. "Stop him!"

.

It was better when Hikaru-sama was missing outside somewhere. At least then I could concentrate.

I followed with the drone while directing security to cut them off. Just as they turned into a parking garage, the drone's battery died, and it fell to the ground.

"FUCK!"

Group Text Messages:

Yuki: Hello all! How's your Saturday going? Akito-kun and I spent the morning with a decorator. Kyoya-senpai's letting us redecorate an entire wing of the Ootori mansion!

Renge: That's great! I've been redecorating Suoh Mansion 2. It takes a lot longer than you'd think.

Yuki: I need some advice.

Yuki: Haruhi was tagged at Shibuya station for her photo shoot. She looked great.

Shinobu: Shibuya station was bombed.

Chika: Before you all go crazy…Yes, it was bombed. Yes, Haruhi-senpai was there. The twins are safe. Right now, we know where Haruhi-senpai is and security is on its way.

Tamaki: What! My darling friend Haruhi! Is she hurt? What happened? Where is she?

Chika: Calm down. Morinozuka security has it under control

Cho: Is she hurt? Chika, you haven't answered that question. What can we do?

Chika: We're not sure about injuries, but she was walking on her own when we first saw her. There's nothing any of us can do. Morinozuka security has it under control

Yuki: Here's another picture from Twitter. Who's the kid she's holding?

Tamaki: Kid? Did Haruhi have a baby? How do we not know? Where has it been? Who's the father?

Chika: Tamaki-senpai, I'm sure Renge-senpai is sitting next to you. Listen to her. She'll explain

Renge: Thanks. I'm taking away his phone now.

Honey: What about Takashi and Satoshi? They're in Orlando.

Chika: It's still early there and their phones are turned off. They don't need to know. They should concentrate on the competition.

Kasanoda: Yeah. It's not like they can do anything

Kasanoda: I sent some fellas over to see if they could id the bomber or the group responsible. Haven't heard anything yet.

Chika: Send word through the security chat.

Kasanoda: Will do

Chika: I'll monitor security and keep you updated. Stay where you are. You can't help at the station.

Security, Morinozuka Estate:

"There's a car leaving with five people. One is Haruhi-sama."

We all tensed when we heard the report. Security had finally made it to the parking garage.

"Can't follow. We don't have a vehicle here yet."

I heard some mumbled curses and decided to ignore them. Now is not the time for propriety. My security forces know what they're doing.

"Akira-sama, vehicles are three minutes out. There are still people in the streets."

"Understood." There's nothing they can do about panicked crowds.

Toy Store:

"I'll get you five of the 'City' sets, but your mother will decide when you can open them."

"But…"

I will not cave to that lower lip quivering. "That's the deal, Sota-kun. Yes or no?"

"Yes."

"I couldn't hear you." Not with his head down and the mumbling.

"Yes, Uncle Kyoya."

"Good. Which ones do you want?"

While he was picking, my phone chimed. I pulled up the notification quickly. That sound only chimes for hospital admittances.

"Haruhi?" Tachibana was at my side in an instant. "Haruhi's been admitted to Ootori General."

He was already on the phone calling into Morinozuka security.

"I picked five, Uncle Kyoya."

"Well done. Let's pay for them."

We headed for the registers and Tachibana updated me. "She was at Shibuya Station when the bombs went off. I gave Morinozuka security her location."

"They didn't know?"

"No. Apparently, she was lost in the crowd."

"As soon as I pay for this, have Sota's detail take him home. We're going to the hospital."

.

.

Morinozuka Security Office:

Oshiro hung up the phone. "She's at Ootori General. I'll notify security at the station."

"And we'll go to the hospital." I gathered Umeko and Yasuchika and left quickly.

Hospital Emergency Room:

"Where is she?" Hika and I skidded up to the Emergency Room counter. "Where's Fujioka Haruhi?"

"Are you family?"

"We're her best friends."

"I'm sorry. I can only give that information out to family."

"Listen here. You give us that or else!"

"Security!"

And that's when a couple of Hitachiin guards pulled us away from the counter and into the waiting room. "We apologize. Her family is on the way. We'll wait for them."

They dragged us near Eiji who was talking to two couples.

"We saw her at the statue. Then she scooped up this kid while she was running. He was screaming for his mom and would have been trampled without her."

"I made him keep following her. I mean, it's Fujioka Haruhi She's famous." The boyfriend rolled his eyes. "Then the mom found them. I can't believe it. All those people and she found her kid. Must have heard him scream. He had some lungs. We were following his yelling."

"And then?"

"Once the kid was gone, it's like she deflated. Completely collapsed behind a news stand. All the ambulances were at the station, so we brought her here. Didn't know what was wrong with her. He knee was bleeding, and she had some cuts on her feet. Must have lost her shoes at some point."

Eiji thanked them, got their information, and sent them on their way. He should be a diplomat.

Hika and I dropped into chairs, and he grabbed my hand. "She better be alright."

"I'm sure she is. It's Haruhi."

"I know. How does she always get into trouble?"

"It's Haruhi."

.

I followed the nurse as she escorted them all to a private waiting room. The twins are loud enough, but I'm sure the rest will be here soon.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Hikaru. Has to be Hikaru. He's practically spitting at me.

"I own this hospital."

Kaoru pulled him to a chair. "Leave him alone, Hika. You don't want to get kicked out, do you?"

I left him to Kaoru and walked over to Eiji. "I've marked her as a VIP and called in my best doctors. This waiting room is yours for the duration."

"Thank you, Ootori-sama."

I nodded and sat as far from everyone else as possible.

Hospital Waiting Room:

A nurse escorted Akira, Yasuchika, and me to a private waiting room near the Emergency Department. Immediately the twins ran up to us. "Any news? They wouldn't tell us anything 'cause we're not family."

Akira's voice filled the room. "The doctors are examining her right now. We've been told it isn't serious. Once they know more, we will be told. We must wait."

My eyes landed on Ootori-san sitting in the corner. His hair and clothing were disheveled, and his skin was pasty. His assistance with Haruhi-chan's medical treatment is the only reason I'm glad he's still in love with her.

"Ootori-san."

He shot out of his seat. "Morinozuka-san." He bowed his head, fitting for both his and my station and the circumstances. "We're waiting for news. I have my best doctors examining her."

"Thank you for that and this room. It's appreciated."

"Please let me know if I can provide anything else." His shoulders slumped slightly. "Including transport to your hospital."

"Let's wait for the doctors before we decide to move her." He nodded and I went back to Akira.

.

"Ritsu, are you sure this is alright? There's going to be press."

"It's common knowledge we're all friends. It should be fine."

We turned the corner into the waiting room, instantly assessing everyone. Yakuza habit. The twins are over in a couple of chairs, their arms around each other. They may be growing into their own personalities, but Haruhi was the kickstart, and they're still so close to her. The Morinozuka's are huddled up with Eiji, I assume trying to get the details. How did he let this happen? Chika's next to the twins but working his tablet. From what I can see, he's checking Twitter and other social media sites. I have my own account set to ping certain hashtags.

And then there was Ootori sitting off by himself. I know from Tetsuya that he's the one that found her and informed Morinozuka security. I'll let the ass-kicking he deserves pass for today.

"The fuck is he doing here?" Obviously, Ritsu doesn't feel the same way.

"Would you be quiet, Asshole. First, he owns the place. Second, he's the one that found her. And third, they used to be close. He probably just wants to be sure she's OK."

"He can't do that from his office?"

"You can do it from the SUV if you don't calm down. Do you want to be kicked out?"

"I'd like to see him fucking try."

"Go sit down, you idiot." I pushed him towards the chairs.

"Fine." Sometimes he's more like a little kid. He hasn't quite learned how to pick his battles. He stomped over and sat next to Hikaru. I went to the vending machine for something to drink.

.

I looked up when the door opened and saw Tamaki and Renge walk in. Even with his grandmother's funeral tomorrow, Tamaki still comes to check on Haruhi. Ever since she wandered into Music Room #3, Haruhi has been our touchstone. She always will be.

Renge joined Shinobu at the vending machine, and Tamaki sat next to me.

"Any news?"

"Not yet. My best doctors are in there with her. Should be any minute."

He nodded and hung his head. "I don't even know what happened."

"The details aren't out yet, but it seems the Black Lives Matter demonstration was the target, not the photoshoot."

"Who'd want to target them?"

"Unknown. That's the police's job."

We sat in silence for a few minutes before I asked, "Are you ready for tomorrow?"

"As much as I can be." Tears caught the light when he looked up at me. "It's not fair. We were just starting to get closer."

In a very un-dick like, un-Kyoya like move, I put my hand on his shoulder. "It's not, and I'm sorry. She might not have told you directly, but I know she was proud of you. I could see it in her eyes when I spoke with her at different events."

"Really?"

"Yes, really."

"Thank you, Kyoya. That means everything."

.

My phone buzzed, and I checked the message. "Fucking finally." I gave the phone to Bu and joined Tetsuya, Eiji, the Morinozuka's, and their head of security, Oshiro-san.

Gotta watch my language. "Just got word. Some stupid color gang initiation. They didn't even know the protest would be there."

"Are you kidding?"

"Have they been arrested?"

"Probably by now. When I heard about the bombing and Haruhi's involvement, I sent some fellas over to get some answers." I'm sure my grin was wicked. Morinozuka Umeko took a half step back. "They figured it out and dumped them in front of a police station, all ziptied and ready for arrest."

"I'll let everyone know to stand down from the investigation." Oshiro-san stepped over to a corner to make his phone call.

"Thank you, Kasanoda-san." Morinozuka Akira gave me a slight bow with his head. A complete shock. He should barely acknowledge me. "Knowing that part of today is taken care of allows us to concentrate on Haruhi-chan."

"It was my honor, Morinozuka-sama." I gave him the same bow back and went to sit down. Pops will get a kick out of this story.

.

"I'm sorry it took so long to get here. We were across town." Yuki-chan tried to catch her breath. "Akito-kun is checking on Haruhi. He'll come back with answers."

"Thank you for coming, Yuki-chan and bringing Akito-san. We haven't heard from the doctor yet." And I don't understand why. She didn't look that injured on the drone footage.

"Of course, Morinozuka-sama. We'd both do anything for Haruhi."

Then Mitsukuni and Cho-chan burst in, and we updated them. Everyone's here. Now we need information.

.

With Haninozuka Mitsukuni and Yasuchika, Morinozuka-sama, and Ootori hospital security in the waiting room, the different security heads decided to step out and discuss today. I left two officers in there, just in case.

"Color gang initiation?"

"They've been quiet lately. Not sure what's caused them to step up."

"At least we have answers now."

"And we know the primaries weren't the target."

I turned to the Hitachiin head. "No more candid photoshoots like that one."

"I'll do my best to dissuade Kaoru-sama, but it is his business."

I backed down a little. There are ways to make something like today safer for Haruhi-sama. "If he has to do that again, we need more notice and better control of the area."

"Agreed."

"Since we're all here," Tachibana broke in, "we should discuss French Polynesia." He pulled out a notebook. "Concerns?"

.

"Tamaki-senpai, I'm so sorry about your grandmother. It sounds empty but let me know if there's anything I can do."

Yuki-chan's so earnest. It's obvious she means it. "Thank you. I don't know what I need right now, it's all so fresh."

"Of course. Just know that anyone here will help you if you need it."

She walked away, and Kyoya said, "Anything you need, Tamaki, just ask."

"Thanks, Kyoya. Right now, I think I just need to sit with it."

.

Akito-san and I walked into the waiting room. I was shocked by the number of people waiting. We decided since he knew the family, he'd do the talking.

"Everyone," All heads snapped towards him. I see this all the time, and it would be funny if not for the setting. "We have news."

He settled into 'doctor mode', giving information without emotion. "Haruhi-chan was unconscious from a panic attack when she arrived here. She's since woken up but was too agitated to examine. She was given a mild sedative.

"She needed two stiches on her knee from a fall. There are several smaller cuts and abrasions on her feet from running without shoes. None of these required stiches. There are bruises on various parts of her body from falling and being bumped by the crowds. She'll be sore, but she's fine."

"So, we can take her home?" That must be one of her guardians.

"We want to observe her for another hour until the sedative wears off so we can assess her anxiety level. Getting her back to familiar settings will help with that. Right now, only immediate family can visit. We want her as calm as possible."

Akito-san indicated the older couple in the room. "Morinozuka-sama, Morinozuka-sama, if you'll follow me, I'll take you to her. The rest of you," he glanced around the room, "won't be able to see her here. I recommend you go home."

Evening, Hitachiin Estate:

"Some of these pictures are spectacular, Kaoru. This one especially," Mom held up a picture of Haruhi climbing the stairs in front of the station, "is perfect for a billboard."

"Mom, how can you talk about the pictures right now. Haruhi just left the hospital."

I could see where he's coming from, but, "Do you know Haruhi at all! She went through all that shit…"

"Language." Mom's scolding was halfhearted at best.

"All that shit today and would demand you use the pictures. You're on a time crunch and need to get them out. It's not like we're keeping her awake looking at them."

His eyes narrowed. "Since when are you the logical brother?"

"I have to step up when you aren't. Just don't do it too often. My head hurts."

That got me a half-smile. Good enough.

"Fine. We'll go through them. But I'm not doing a photoshoot like that one ever again."

"Why not?"

"Because it turned into a disaster, Mom. Why else?"

I think his common sense is running low because of what Watanabe did. Before Mom could answer, I jumped in. "Because it wasn't the shoot that was a disaster, it was the location. It was the protest and the bombing. You all were at the right place at the wrong time."

I let out a harsh breath and put my hand on my forehead, feigning a headache. "With more prep and contingency plans, another will work." He dropped the stack of pictures on the table, getting ready to argue with me. "Now can you start thinking again. My head is killing me."

"He's right, Kaoru. The protest was unplanned, and the shoot was not the target of the bombing."

I winced watching him grab his hair in both hands and pull. "This whole thing is stupid." Mom and I nodded. "Fine. Let's just get through this shoot first. See what pics we have and what we need to get in a studio shoot. I've got it booked for Thursday after classes."

We gathered around the table and got started.

"Hey? How did Mori-senpai and Satoshi do today?"

Kasanoda Compound:

"Thanks fellas. We heard from our police contact. They couldn't stop laughing at the way you tied those fuckers up and left them at the station."

"Glad to do it, Young Lord. Haruhi-sama's like a little sister. Wish we could see her again."

"Yeah. It's not fair, but I get it. Just miss her. She reminded me of my cousin."

"It sucks, but it's part of the life." They bowed and went on their way, probably to the gym. It's still early.

I heard a knock, and Pops stuck his head into my room. "Ritsu?"

"Yeah?"

"Here's your mother's ring. It's resized for Shinobu."

I took the box from Pops and opened it. He was smart enough not to mention how my hands were shaking. "Just how I remembered it." Yellow gold with a large pearl and two smaller ones on either side. The band had diamonds running around it.

"You sure she'll want to wear it? Pearls are delicate. She's a boss not a wife."

"Don't worry, Pops. I've got a plan."

Akira's Office, Morinozuka Estate:

"Maybe we should keep her home tomorrow."

"The doctor said she's fine. Just the stiches and some bruises."

"But mentally…"

My wife tapered off, and we both thought the same thing. Haruhi-chan went through a stressful event today, mentally and physically. The last thing either of us want to do is put more pressure on her.

"She was shaking so hard."

"At the hospital. She'd stopped by the time we got her home." I'm of the opinion she'll do better the sooner she gets back to normal, though I wouldn't call Suoh Shizue's funeral normal. I hope to be spared a huge, political funeral by growing so old, I'll pass the family on to Takashi before I die.

"She doesn't have to go. Haruhi-chan has no political standing."

"She's attached to our family, Umeko. You can't have it both ways."

She slumped back in her chair and sighed. "I only want to spare her."

"All parents want to spare their children, but we can't. It's part of growing up."

"Still…"

"Let's wait and ask Haruhi-chan tomorrow if she's able to go."

"You know she'll say yes."

"True, but both of us know her and will know if she really shouldn't."

"Alright." She stood and walked to the door. "I'll check on her one last time then I'm getting some sleep. I'll need it tomorrow."

"I said I would."

"It's a thing men say."

"I'm not most men."

"No, you're not."

He rolled over and put his hand on my hip. "Another round?"

"Definitely." This is the best client I've ever had.

Sunday, July 10:

Morinozuka Jet:

"Takashi, even if we leave earlier, we won't make it in time for the funeral."

"I know."

"Then why…"

"Haruhi."

"Mother said she was fine. A couple of cuts and scrapes. That's all."

"She was in a bombing, Satoshi. A deafening noise."

"Oh." Not sure how I could forget about her fear. Chika and I spent the night under the bed with her once because of it. "Isn't it only thunder?"

A muscle in his jaw twitched. The only outward sign he's losing his patience. "After the car crash and the shooting, she's become more sensitive to loud noises. Have you not noticed?"

I hung my head and looked at the carpet. "Yeah. Wasn't thinking."

"Hn."

One of the other team members called to us, "Hey you two, stop moping. You just won gold and silver at the last world cup and made the Olympic team. It's time to celebrate."

Under my breath, I said to Taka, "You can't make the plane fly any faster. Enjoy your victory with the guys. We've all earned it."

He's always been serious, but he doesn't have any fun anymore.

Hitachiin Estate:

"Boys, you need to take care of Haruhi at the funeral today." I leveled a glare at them over the breakfast table. "Tamaki and Renge will be grieving. Mori and Satoshi won't be there, neither will Kasanoda or his girlfriend. The Morinozuka's can help, but they'll be playing politics most of the time. That leaves you two and Yasuchika."

"What about Honey-senpai and Cho-senpai?"

"He's the heir, so he'll be playing politics with his parents. She'll be with him, as it looks like they'll be engaged soon." I took a sip of my coffee and waited for them to catch up. They didn't. "We're not important at this occasion. The Hitachiin's are not a dynasty, we don't play those kinds of politics. We were invited because you two are friends of Tamaki's. That's all."

It hit Kaoru before Hikaru. "Oh, OK. Makes sense. We know the customs. We'll watch over her with Chika."

"Yeah. No problem, Mom."

"Good. Your father and I can help, but we must mingle as well. We can't let this opportunity go. Since we were invited, we can't act like we don't belong, so we'll be playing as much politics as makes sense."

Kaoru tossed his napkin on the table in a huff. "This is stupid. Tamaki-senpai's grandmother died, and all anyone cares about is politics."

"I know. It is stupid. But these elite funerals are like elite weddings. They're to see and be seen and to grow your business. The Suoh family will do their grieving in private."

"It's still stupid."

"Yes. It is."

That evening…

Haruhi:

Dear Mom and Dad,

You will not believe what happened yesterday…[describes the photoshoot and bombing].

The worst part was how I froze. I thought I was past that, but there I was, hiding under a bench.

And just how did I become a social media darling? Dad, you'd be so excited. I can see you printing out the best posts and tacking them all over the walls at home. Well, you don't have to worry about that. Somehow, I ended up with a personal PR person to do that for you. Although she saves them on her computer rather than plastering the walls.

Apparently, I'm some kind of trendsetter. At least that's what Kaoru calls it. He said to expect cheap knockoffs of the kimono I wore to the funeral to start showing up in stores. Can't people think for themselves? I guess that's the opposite of the purpose of the ads I shoot for him and the pet ads. Weird, huh?

You would not believe the stupid customs of a rich bastard funeral. You made the right choice, Dad, having the funeral you wanted. No one there today actually cared she was dead except for family and their close friends. Everyone else was there because they were expected to be. Ridiculous.

It's raining now, but no thunder. The water on the windows should help me sleep.

I love you both so much and miss you more than I can say.

Your daughter,

Haruhi

I sealed up the envelope and put it in the box with the others. Then, I grabbed Koko, and we went to bed.

.

Renge:

"I'm so glad that's over," I sighed as I sunk up to my chin in hot water and bubbles. Today was one of the longest days of my life. Mother died when I was young, so I don't remember much. More than Haruhi because I was 10, but Father kept my brother and me from the worst of it. Me more than him because he's the heir, but we were both shielded.

Tamaki-kun was scrutinized by everyone there, from the Prime Minister on down to the lowliest of invitees. Overall, it went well. There were some issues with the caterers, but nothing the attendees noticed.

We make a perfect couple. Tamaki-kun hates politics and is no good at it. I, however, am in my element. Father taught me well, and I brought all that knowledge and experience to bear today. I escorted Tamaki-kun through the crowd, making sure he met with everyone necessary and spent the correct amount of time with them depending on their station. He thanked the most generous doners to cancer research without embarrassing them. I kept the receiving line moving when he wanted to speak too long with his friends (they understood). And, most of all, kept him out of trouble.

Tomorrow he will be named the Suoh heir at a press conference at their main offices. As his fiancée, I'll be with him. The designer and seamstresses worked overtime getting my suit made. Unfortunately, it's just not proper for me to wear one of Kaoru's from his line. Would have been great advertising for him.

He told me his father will be bringing his mother to Japan, and they'd be married. As he already has an heir, their wedding won't be as large and political as Tamaki's and mine. I'm excited to meet my mother-in-law-to-be. I thought I'd have to please that old bat, but now I don't have to follow her wishes for the wedding and our lives together.

I let out a huge, jaw-cracking yawn. I need to get some sleep to look rested for tomorrow's press conference.

.

Kyoya:

"Tachibana, join me for a glass of wine." I gestured towards the sofa opposite mine. He sat on the edge of his seat and waited for me to start the conversation. "Sit back and relax. There are plenty of guards around. You don't need to be on duty tonight."

"Yes, Kyoya-sama."

"What did you think of Nishmori's report?"

"His and the BOS's progress is impressive. Your father…"

"Don't call him that." I'll never think of that man as my father again. Bastard.

"I apologize. Ootori-jukeisha left quite a mess for you to clean up. There's still some highly political people to deal with."

"Yes. I'll be back in a few weeks. I'll deal with them then." I took a sip of wine and settled further back in my seat. "It's satisfying I was able to give Suoh Shizue peace about her issues with him before she died."

Tachibana nodded and sipped from his glass. Barely enough to wet his lips. Though I gave him the night off, he'll always be alert for problems.

"The funeral went well. I know there were problems in the kitchen during the reception, but I doubt anyone else did. I can read Renge better than most."

"I'm sure Tamaki-sama is relieved to have it behind him."

"Definitely. If not for Renge, I doubt he would have made it through. She's a tremendous asset for him. I hope he realizes that."

"If not before, I'm sure he does after today."

I made some noncommittal grunt and finished my one glass for the evening. "Tamaki and I have plans for tomorrow night. We'll be dining at the Italian four-star restaurant. After he's named heir, it's important to his image that he's seen with me." I tilted my head and watched the rain running down the window. No thunder tonight. After what Haruhi went through Saturday, that would be the last thing she needs.

"I'll contact the head of his security detail and work with him. I'm sure his detail will expand with his new position in the family."

"He'll find it suffocating but must get used to it. Renge's will also increase."

We both got lost in our own thoughts. Tachibana thinking about security for tomorrow, and me about Tamaki's and my relationship. Dinner tomorrow was his idea and not just to be seen. I could tell he wanted to talk, to meet, to spend time with me. Maybe I'm not out in the dark as much as I fear.

.

Hikaru:

"Shit."

I fixed a line of code and compiled again.

"Shit." Guess I'll have to run the debugger line by line.

I never thought I'd enjoy programming enough to take classes outside of school. Maybe I won't go into fashion like Kaoru.

.

Kaoru:

Mom's right. This picture is perfect for a billboard. It's going up on a huge electronic screen on the side of a building in the fashion district. Haruhi will be horrified.

I smiled a bit at that, and my mind drifted back to Saturday. What a complete clusterfuck. No one could have predicted so many different things converging on that one area. The protest, the crowds, the bombs. It's like the gods were laughing at me.

At least she's alright. Her kimono hid most of the bruises, and her limp was barely noticeable. Her hashtag was more popular than Tamaki's grandmother's today. Her funeral might have been all over the news, but Haruhi ruled social media even the day after the bombing. Then that mother was identified and interviewed, and that blew up. Haruhi was photographed as much as anyone else coming into the funeral reception. A red carpet at a funeral reception. At least it wasn't really red.

"I give up." I threw my pen down and leaned back in my chair, wincing when my back popped. Too damn young for that.

Mao can organize the shoot Thursday based on these notes. I went through all the pictures, determined what I didn't get that I wanted, and made a stack to reshoot on a set. I want to see if they look better than out in public.

Might also be time for some more candids in commoner clothes to take away from that expensive kimono that's all over Twitter.

I think I need another assistant.

.

Naoko:

These uniforms are atrocious, worse than those stupid yellow dresses. Who wears skirts that cover their knees? At a finishing school?

Then they had the nerve to test me on dinner etiquette. I know which fork to use for each course. If I didn't, Father wouldn't let me eat. I learned quick.

At least the classes sound interesting.

Now all my parents have to do is find me a husband. Then everything will be fine.

.

Kasanoda:

This budget is fucking ridiculous. I have a meeting with Chairman Suoh after we get back from our vacation, and these numbers need to be better. Does it really cost that much to put in an irrigation system? And this is cost?

The plans are fantastic. Maybe the Chairman won't shit a brick when he sees these numbers. At least we won't have to reinforce the sports center roof first.

Maybe I started this business too soon. The urban gardens won't pay for themselves, so I need this other half of the business, this green building part.

"Hey, Ritzu?" Pops stuck his head into my office. I had one set up outside of my room. Makes more sense this way.

"Yeah, Pops?"

"It's getting late. You have school tomorrow."

"I know. Just finalizing the Ouran sports center green project."

"How much time are you going to have to run the Syndicate with all this legitimate shit?"

"It will all be settled by then." I gave him an evil grin. "You're not thinking about dying anytime soon, are you?"

That got a big belly laugh. Don't hear those that much.

"Hey, need to tell you what happened at the hospital Saturday afternoon." I stood up and walked over to him. "Morinozuka-sama actually bowed to me."

"What?" I came out like he thought I was lying.

"He bowed to me. After I told him I found the fuckers that set the bombs, he bowed his head to me. I almost fell over."

"Please tell me you bowed back."

"Of course, I did. I'm not a complete fucking idiot."

"Sending you to Ouran was a smart idea. Now you have to finish."

"Shit."

.

Shinobu:

This is fucking crazy. I found them. I helped get them to the hospital. I donated a hundred million yen (~$ 1 million) towards their care and recovery. And I can't find out where those women and girls are now and how they're doing?

I grabbed my laptop and stopped just short of throwing it against the wall. Yeah, OK, everything's on the cloud, I just don't want to fuck with getting a new one. I threw a vase full of flowers instead. Ritsu will understand.

That fat fucker we found is in jail. They couldn't get a confession, no matter how hard they tried. If they gave me five minutes, I'd get him to admit everything he's ever done wrong all the way back to elementary school. Chickenshits. Maybe they'll let him go, and I'll get my chance.

I know what I need.

I took a walk to the far side of our compound and down into the basement of a storage building.

The smell was worse than disgusting. I'll probably have to burn these clothes. There they were, sitting in their own piss and shit in small cages. So small they couldn't sit up or stretch out. Basically, dog kennels. After about a week of keeping them here, I decided they were getting off too easy dying so soon. I give them a little water and some bread. Just enough to stay alive.

I grabbed the baseball bat from the corner and smacked the top of the cages. "Wake up, you assholes. I'm not letting you die yet." Their eyes opened and rolled to look at me. That's all the movement I got. "Hope you're enjoying yourselves. You'll be here for a long time."

.

Mori:

Ranka's soft opening is set for Wednesday. Tamaki invited enough of the host club clients and their boyfriends to fill up the tables. It will be a full menu, and Lewis-san assures me the kitchen is ready. My manager, Fukuda-san, knows I demand perfection and will be ready for anything. The ladies will be performing for the group. I know they'll be happy to see Haruhi.

I emailed a to-do list to Yamamoto-san and got ready for bed. I have a full training day tomorrow.

.

Honey:

Now, if I stand with my back to the door and put the pencil on my head…

.

Haninozuka Yorishia:

Mitsukuni made his mother and me proud today. He left Usa-chan at home and wore no visible pink. He was attentive to Cho and her parents, introducing them around and keeping the conversation up when they weren't sure what to say. He even smoothly changed topics away from those that were uncomfortable for them.

He and Cho-chan will make a formidable couple. They were a team today, and everyone saw that.

I wonder if her father realizes that their upcoming engagement was basically announced at the reception today.

.

Cho:

On the way home from the funeral, Father told me he was impressed with Honey-kun. Impressed! It won't be long before he agrees to an engagement. We can't marry in the spring. It would be too close to Tamaki's and Renge's wedding. Perhaps summer? Or fall after the semester ends.

It's a good thing we're going away next week. All of us can use the downtime. With bakeries, funerals, bombings, photoshoots, restaurants, nightclubs, fashion lines, shipping, pet food, and I can't forget school, we're all stretched so thin.

I know…I should get the girls together after classes one day this week for a shopping spree. We'll all need new bikinis for the trip. A spa day as well. With bikinis comes a wax.

.

Satoshi:

Two more laps to go.

Can't believe Taka bailed on our run tonight. Last week, he would have made me run double, but after what happened this weekend, he's lost focus. Haruhi seemed fine Saturday night. Just a little shaken and sore. The way he was worrying, I expected to find her a blubbering mess.

Nine weeks until the Olympics. Can't wait. I'm definitely getting a silver. And who knows, I just might come back with the gold if I keep training, and Taka has a bad day. I've only ever defeated him twice. I surprised him that one time.

I need to revamp my training plan and surprise him again. I won't spar with him again until I meet him in the medal match.

Perfect.

.

Chika:

About time. It took me the last few hours to set up my trading goals for the week. Each purchase at a different threshold. Different expectations for each. I put so much into Suoh stock after she died, and now I only have to wait for it to go back up to sell. There's no reason to keep it all. Right now, I'm trying to raise capital.

Satoshi and I never talk about money, but sometimes I wonder if we're close to the same level. Are his investments doing as well as mine? What about his half of the apartment business with Takashi? And what about Takashi? He's running the sports equipment company, the apartment business, and the nightclub chain that's opening a new one on Friday.

Am I behind everyone?

And now with Haruhi-senpai's influence, we're all more aware of our charitable donations. Without Ootori around (that jerk), I'm the only one who'd step up and help all of us focus our giving more for a bigger impact. What would that look like? Would it help the issues I'm having with the Ouran Tuesday thing?

Maybe it's time for a long talk about personal finances with everyone. We'll be stronger together. Just think of it…ten of the biggest families in Japan all working together in business and philanthropy. We could rule the world.

.

Eiji:

She dropped her phone and wasn't wearing her own shoes. I had no way to track her. It's time to discuss tracking implants.

And her profile has increased again. Once they found that mother and interviewed her about Haruhi-sama saving her kid, I knew we were in trouble. Haruhi-sama didn't even know her name, we couldn't prevent the interview by talking her out of it or paying her off.

The estate security office was overwhelmed by flowers and candy yesterday. Almost all clean. There was a basket of strawberries laced with LSD. That was particularly worrisome because her penchant for strawberries isn't well known.

All the security teams agreed that Morinozuka security would head the team for French Polynesia. That allows us to set the tone. The kids won't realize what's going on, but we'll have them wrapped up tight. The heirs for seven different families will be there: Suoh, Haninozuka, Morinozuka, Kasanoda, Himura, Hitachiin, Ootori (that little kid). Plus, members of the Ootori, Haninozuka, Morinozuka, Hitachiin, Shido, Cho, and Houshakuji families. If something happened on that island, it could wipe out the next generation of the Japanese elite.

At least it's a private island. That makes some things easier.

Still have to plan Haruhi-sama's security for this weekend. She's not going to like my suggestion of the SUV to Nagoya instead of the train.

.

Morinozuka Umeko:

I'm glad that's over. They didn't even try to disguise the politics. Seating in the reception was set for business meetings. They even had charging stations ready in another room. I saw several assistants typing away on their laptops in there.

Haruhi-chan was amazing. Definitely a natural. She even charmed the Prime Minister when he was speaking to our family heads. The twins did a good job helping her deal with the craziness while not letting her get bored. I must remember to thank them.

And their mother. She's got plenty of political savvy, knowing she was only invited because of her sons' relationship with Tamaki. She wore that black suit with class and acted like everyone was there to see her. I'm sure she made quite a few business contacts with all the different wives there. I heard several complements on her suit.

.

Hitachiin Yuzuha:

I never did like that old hag, but I'd thank her for her funeral reception if she was still around. I almost ran out of business cards.

And the Prime Minister's wife asking me to design her next ball gown! My feet didn't touch the floor after that.

.

Tamaki:

That play is next week. They'll do the blocking and move the sets in Sunday. It's an interesting take on a Greek tragedy. I believe Grandmother would have enjoyed it.

She'll never come to the gallery again. I'll never escort her through the crowd and hear her say something almost nice.

The jewelry designer late next week is definitely not her taste. Using recycled computer and other electronic parts to create necklaces, bracelets, and other things including cufflinks, is for the young set. We've been working hard to attract that demographic.

I still think a show for some of the best students at the art school is a good idea. Perhaps I could advertise it as an opportunity for patrons to find artists to sponsor. Or small businesses to find artists to hire for commissioned art. There are so many possibilities.

My head snapped to the door when someone knocked. "Come in."

"Tamaki, it's past midnight. You have classes tomorrow and a huge press conference. You must look your best when I officially name you my heir."

"Thank you, Father. Good night."

"Good night."

I wanted Grandmother to accept me and make me her heir, but I had to wait for her to die first.

Nothing about this entire thing is fair.

.

Suoh Yuzuru:

I slowly opened the door to Mother's home office and turned on the light. I'd only been in here once since she passed to look for any urgent documents. Now I need to find information on Anne-Sophie.

It would have been the absolute height of impropriety to openly look for her before the funeral, but now I will find her. I will find her and bring her here.

Should I take Tamaki with me?

I also do not own, nor am I making any money from, the following: Olympics, Lego, Duplo, any real restaurant, business, artist, food product, or really anything else that exists. I do, however, own any original characters and the plot of this story.

Author's Note:

Surprise! Needed some action, so Dad and I went with this. Please realize that we've had this planned for months and choosing to bomb a Black Lives Matter protest was not political. I wanted to write in the protest because I was touched (happy, humbled, grateful, etc.) by the Japanese people's support of our issues, and all the other countries that held protests. Its inclusion was not meant as a commentary on this week's events. I had a color gang be responsible for the bombing just to put it on someone, and they didn't know the protest would be happening, or the photoshoot for that matter. Basically – This was not meant to push any political buttons for my readers. If it did, I apologize.

It was fun writing about how everyone either knew or didn't and how they found out. Poor Tamaki. Sometimes he's absolutely clueless.

Kyoya and Sota are so cute. I know a lot more of them would be too much, but maybe just a little bit more when he comes back into town.

As for the funeral, I didn't want to write it. Too complicated and basically unnecessary. The thought roundup at the end took care of it.

.

Next Chapter:

Back to school. How are Haruhi's issues with the factory coming? Could Akito and Yuki get any cuter? Is Tamaki repairing his relationship with Kyoya? What's the Tuesday charity? And how will the soft opening and Ranka's go?

Stay tuned.
