CHAPTER 30. Thanks for the Tea
For a moment, it felt like Sophia's world stopped turning. It just came to a complete halt and the chaotic events of the past several years swirled around her in a torrent. Finding her home destroyed, being chased out of a castle by an evil queen, the marshes of Morva, meeting Rosamund, her transformation, working in the Beast's castle, meeting Kelsey, her training, all of it flashed through her mind before vanishing again. Sophia sprang across the room wrapped her arms around her and hugged her so tightly she felt herself being lifted off the floor of the shop.
"Sophia! I can't believe it's you! I'm so happy to see you! I can't believe you're here!" Finally, she set Sophia down and looked her up and down. "You look wonderful."
Sophia was still struggling to find her voice. She was vaguely aware of Mirror standing behind her, watching the scene unfold before him. Sophia was more focused on Giselle, taking in her appearance. This strange new version of Giselle did resemble the sister that she new and loved. She had big blue eyes and reddish hair. She was still a full head taller than Sophia and willowy and slim where Sophia was petite and somewhat plump. But she looked so different at the same time, Sophia had never seen herself dressed in anything but gowns, usually in pink. Now her sister wore the strange denim pants that Kelsey was so fond of. He hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she wore a strange white T-shirt that red I Heart New York. It all seemed far too casual and plain compared to her dreamy eyed sister especially when she wore an elaborate gown and tiara.
"Sophia?" Giselle asked in concern.
Sophia finally managed to find her voice. "Are you alright?" she asked.
Giselle's face lit up with a warm smile. "Of course, I'm alright!" she cried. "I'm just fine. I'm wonderful. I've never been happier." Sophia's face froze and she stared at her sister's face. Something about her words hit Sophia like a ton of bricks. I've never been happier.
Giselle finally released her sister and hurried across the shop. "I'm sorry we're closed!" she said to Mirror.
"He's… he's with me," Sophia said. "This is Mirror." Mirror gave Giselle a shy nod.
"Oh," Giselle said with a smile. "Hello." Giselle swept past him and turned the sign hanging on the door from Open to Closed. "Come inside," she cried. She gripped her shoulders and led Sophia to a back room with Mirror awkwardly struggling to keep up.
The back room appeared to be her sister's work room. The walls were lined with shelves stacked with beautifully vibrant fabric in more patterns and colors that Sophia had ever seen, a dress form stood in the corner with a half finished skirt hanging off it. There was also a few chairs and a round chair. "Please sit down, sit down," she insisted. Sophia did as she was told, still in shock. Giselle hurried over to a small series of countertops. She lifted a teapot and returned with two cups. She set one in front of Sophia and another on the tabletop. She filled the two cups and pressed one into Sophia's hands. She glanced over at Mirror who was still standing in the corner of the little room, unsure of what to say. If she thought that it was odd to have this strange masked character in her workroom, she didn't say anything. Instead, she set the cup on the table and pushed it closer to him before whirling around and returning to Sophia's side.
"So… are you…?" Giselle began.
"What happened to you?" Sophia demanded. "I came back to find a destroyed house and you were gone! The next day this little troll of a man tells me that "
"Oh, right," Giselle said, her smile fading. "That…" Giselle sat across from her sister. "Well, you see… Edward did save me from the troll. It was very nice of him and I was really taken with him."
"So I hear," Sophia deadpanned.
"Well, I was all prepared to marry him," Giselle said. "When I was shoved into the well by his crazy stepmother." Giselle looked sheepish. "She wasn't very nice."
"We've met," Sophia said coldly.
"Oh," Giselle said. "Well, this is awkward. She's…. well.. she's dead now. You see she tried to kill me on numerous occasions." Ditto. Sophia thought to herself. "I didn't mean to kill her, but she turned into a dragon and tried to kill Edward and me as well as my good friend Robert. I managed to kill her. It's a long story. I also decided that Edward and I aren't meant to be together. We're better off as friends."
Sophia had to admit, a surge of relief swept over her after hearing that. The fact that she would never have to worry about the vicious queen prowling the Kingdom for her was oddly comforting. Her mature decision to turn Edward down was also the sort of thing that Sophia could only dream about. "So… you were able to defeat her recently?"
"Recently?" Giselle asked and laughed. "Oh no, that was years ago."
"YEARS?!" Sophia repeated. She slammed her cup onto the tabletop so heavily that warm tea splashed over the rim of the cup. Mirror's expressionless face turned towards her and Sophia could have sworn that he somehow looked concerned.
"Uh huh," Giselle said, not paying any attention to her reaction. She stirred her own tea. "You see, I met this wonderful man and I decided to marry him instead." Giselle wiggled her fingers in Sophia's direction. A small but elegant diamond ring sparkled on her left hand. ""We got married in Central Park and we set up this shop." She gestured around the work room. She smiled at Sophia. "So… what happened to you?"
"What happened to me…"
"Sophia…" Mirror began, but she cut him off before he could complete the couplet.
"What happened to me?" Sophia's voice raised. "I'll tell you what happened to me." Sophia bolted to her feet. "I raced through the forest with a little troll of a man to try and get to your wedding and talk you out of making such a stupid and foolhardy decision! Narissa didn't love the idea of you marrying Edward and once I stumbled across her secret hidden lair and realized how evil she was she tried to kill me."
"Oh…." Giselle's face paled. "That's too bad…"
"She chased me all over Andalasia!" Sophia exploded, vaguely aware of the volume of her voice going up as she spoke. "If it wasn't for this cranky old pixie named Doli I would never had made it out alive."
"Oh my!" Giselle cried. "That's so awful."
"That's not even the half of it," Sophia slammed her palms on the table, shaking the cups on the table. "I was chased into the Marshes of Morva where three witches tried to destroy me. That's a grand total of FOUR enchantresses using their magic to kill me! I had to beg a crazed fairy godmother to make me her apprentice so I could use my magic to save myself AND to find you. I did all this work only to have the dimwitted woman, turn me into a BROOM on accident! I spent YEARS sweeping floors, trapped in the body of a broom, and I only changed back when those three witches caught up with me and turned me back in order to take me out themselves. It was only dumb luck that kept me alive."
"Oh my gosh, Sophia!" Giselle cried.
"I'm STILL not done!" Sophia screamed. She shook off Mirror's gentle hand on her arm as he tried to restrain her. "I spent months wandering from town to town with a bard, sleeping on the floors of taverns and outside in the cold until I finally was able to get a job as a maid. And that's when I met the single most INFURIATING woman in the entire Kingdom. She dragged me into this whole mess of an adventure. Multiple villains trying to kill me! .TIME! But that was even okay, because in the end she came through for me and was able to help me find a teacher who was willing to train me into a proper godmother. I spent weeks living in a haunted mansion. Literally, haunted by 999 haunts!" Giselle was staring at her sister, mouth gaped open. "But I became a godmother," Sophia snapped. "I became a godmother FOR YOU. I did all of this ridiculous nonsense FOR YOU. I risked my life to become a godmother to protect YOU because I was convinced that something terrible had happened to you. After all, why else wouldn't you come back home to Andalasia? What else could be so important that you wouldn't come looking for your sister." Sophia was vaguely aware of hot tears springing to her eyes. She wiped them away with her sleeve. "And then I find out that Edward is back in town and tells me that my sister is lost in some mysterious land far from home, so I once again journey halfway across the Kingdom to find you here. Married to some random man that you had just met? Giselle, have you learned NOTHING?!"
There was a heavy silence as neither sister spoke. The silence was broken by the sound of a tinkling bell. "Giselle?" a male voice called. "We're back from the game."
"In here, Robert," Giselle called out feebly.
Sophia whirled around to see a tall dark-haired man and a little girl in pigtails step into the room. Both of them were wearing baseball jerseys and seemed surprised to see the strange angry woman in an elaborate gown.
"Hello," the man said awkwardly, his eyes darting towards Giselle searching for an explanation.
"Robert," Giselle said. "This is my sister, Sophia. Sophia, this is my husband Robert and my step-daughter, Morgan."
Sophia froze in place, "Step-daughter?" she repeated in shock. The little girl stared up at her, eyes wide with alarm. The little girl took a step behind her father.
"She's your niece," Giselle said brightly, forcing a weak smile onto her face.
"Niece?!" Sophia cried.
"Hi… it's a pleasure to meet you…Sophia," Robert said, offering his hand. Sophia didn't take it.
"I can't believe this," Sophia cried. With that, she stormed past him pushed her way out through the door.
"Sophia!" Giselle cried. She chased after her sister with Mirror following close behind. "Sophia! Be careful!" Giselle cried as her sister made her way down the steps.
"Shut up!" Sophia snapped.
"Sophia watch out!" Giselle cried as Sophia made her way across the busy street. "Robert, this is awful!" Giselle cried. "She will never make it on her own!"
A car screeched to a halt a few paces away from Sophia and blared its horn. "I'm walking here!" Sophia roared at the driver before continuing to stomp her way across to the other side.
"I don't know," Robert shrugged. "She seems like she's fitting in pretty well!"
"Excuse me," Mirror said pushing his way through to the door. "My name is Mirror," he said with a little ball. "I beg you. Please, pardon me. I'll go try and talk to her." Mirror paused before turning back to them. "And thanks for the tea!"
With that, Mirror scurried across the street, struggling to keep up with Sophia as she stormed away from the shop.
