After-Credits: My Doom Slayer Character & Response to Story Complaints
Hi there, all. This isn't another story chapter, unfortunately, but rather a justification and long-winded explanation for how I wrote and directed my idea of the Doom Slayer, as well as addressing complaints. If you're not interested, no harm done, you can go ahead and ignore the rest of this.
But this is simply here for all of those who felt as if the Slayer went 'out of character' in some instances of this story. Hopefully, with this explanation, I can clear up any problems you may have had with him in this story. If you still feel as if I wrote him poorly, then no harm done as well. It is you wonderful readers that have made this story so famous, and I have no right to judge your disposition of how you felt about this story. I welcome praise and criticism alike in the reviews.
The Doom Slayer
So, to start with the beginning: If it wasn't clear, the portal that Hayden sent the Slayer into is something that I used to make it so that the Slayer ended up in the Hazbin Hell dimension instead of wherever else he was residing during that time. He came down inside of a meteor and crashed into Imp City, where all of this starts.
Now to begin with his analysis: As you know, the Doom Slayer is, in short, a demon slayer more than anything else. In both Doom (2016) and Doom: Eternal, he is seen only killing demons. He is not a mindless killing machine that slaughters everything and everyone in his path. He knows who and what his targets are most of the time.
Most of the time. When he came to the Hazbin Hell, he was met with several various 'demons' that displayed human behavior. They acted like humans, especially in the way they displayed fear, happiness, anger, and so on. All of it was reminiscent to what the Slayer had seen so very long ago, before his awakening on Mars.
That being said, his first encounters in the beginning were entirely hostile, as the demonic crews that approached him were very similar to his first encounter with demons when he was awakened on Mars and chained to the table. He awakens from the meteor, blasting his way out, only to be met with horrifying, demonic faces. And thus, his slaughter began.
Now, we can skip over all of his slaughter, carnage, etc. I believe that was all explained through the storytelling well enough. Instead, let's address individual questions and concerns about his character.
During the Capital Arc, when the Doom Slayer was heading towards the place to erase the landscape of demonic presence, there were a few reviews that pleaded with me to either kill or keep Charlie alive.
Here's the thing about the Slayer: It is my belief that it's not only appearance, but a sort of 'musk' that radiates from demons that identify them as 'demons'. Almost like how dogs can sense a person's intentions, the Slayer, I believe, has an innate intuition that tells him if someone or something is a danger to him, or if they are a demon. And of course, they also have to be acting as a demon would. This entire time, the Slayer is met with a mix of demons running and fighting him, which is far different from what he encountered on Mars and in the Kadingir Sanctum. There was not a single demon that didn't take the chance to lunge at him in an attempt to tear him apart.
It was unquestionable and undeniable that he would kill every demon in sight. After all, what demons didn't attack humans, or him for that matter? He hadn't met a single one that defied his understanding yet.
But in the Hazbin Hell, he finds this mix to be almost like a culture shock. What he initially expected to be yet another rampage turned out to be a philosophical and morality thing. As time went on, with the more demons he killed, he began to question his own brutal killing methods. He didn't display it in the story all that much, but it's exceedingly difficult to try and form the thoughts or words of a man who does not speak nor articulate his thoughts. So I tried my best to enunciate his thoughts in his actions, when he hesitated upon pointing his shotgun at the gas station worker, and when he hesitated upon shooting Charlie.
I would think he would operate in this manner for a very simple reason: The Doom Slayer is not a mindless killing machine, as stated before. In fact, in the Wikia, you can clearly read paragraphs detailing his level of intelligence, his ability to judge a situation, and several other traits that resemble a very intelligent, calculating individual that is simply following a path of rage and destruction on what are undoubtedly irredeemable demonic forces.
The Slayer thinks. He is always ready to analyze his situation, the pros and cons, the dangers and risks, and many other factors. And above all, he has a goal, which is to purge the demonic presence everywhere. Why? Because he wants to protect humanity. There is no other explanation. Even while the Slayer Testaments detail how he is on a journey of endless destruction, he was also the defender of Earth and his kingdom before he was sealed into a tomb. He takes on the role of a defender whenever he can, and it is always for the defenseless, the peaceful, the human.
And thus came the ultimate crux of his situation. He came into the Hazbin Hell dimension ripping and tearing, but soon enough he started noticing some problems. Cities, standing militaries, demons running away. All pointers that this was not the average demonic dimension. Clearly, these 'demons' had some form of government and society.
And some people might ask, 'Well, why didn't he just stop slaughtering and try to communicate with them?'. There were a lot of things he had to consider.
First of all, the biggest question was if this was merely another trick by the demons to try and get the Slayer to stop his onslaught so they could catch him off-guard and seal him away once more. After all, who would put it behind a bunch of horrible demons to try and trick the very dude that was out for their blood? So this possibility carried on with him the entire way.
But the biggest hesitation thus far was when he met Charlie. From context clues, he surmised that she was someone of great importance. After all, she was being heavily guarded by an elite squadron of demons who were trying to carry her away from battle. He surmised her to be the equivalent of a high-ranking Hell Priest.
The Complaints
Why were the demons resurrected in Chapter 10?
To refresh your mind, Chapter 10 is where all the demons the Slayer had slain were resurrected, to some measure. I am aware that MANY people were unhappy with this; After all, it destroys their development and removes the whole point of their deaths, right?
That's where you need to continue reading, and consider a point: Since we are playing with the concepts of heaven and hell, good and evil, etc. I felt it would not be remiss to put characters through multiple deaths; Not just for development, but to remove the mask of 'main character = invincible'. In this story, characters, main or side, will die in a variety of ways, and may or may not come back. That is the way I wanted to tell the story. Since both DOOM and Hazbin Hotel play with the concepts of living, dying, etc. I wanted to explore upon that detail far more.
Nothing changed at the end of the story; Charlie got everything back to normal. What the hell? What was the point of the ENTIRE story, then?
This is why I created a sequel: I was well aware by the end of this story that the characters did not go through any particularly meaningful journey, except for all of the hardship they endured. You see, I had started this story just to get enough views to redirect people to my Wattpad. But since this story is getting so much attention, I decided the viewers didn't deserve this somewhat-shite ending I had eked out. So, the sequel is far more planned, more well-written, and has a better premise behind it than this one. The sequel should not only sate all of your gripes, but is also intended to give you that meaningful journey that this first one was missing. I suggest you go check it out! It's in the same category as this one, and it's called 'Layers of Hell: Scorched Earth'.
What happened to the 2nd half of the story?
Now, to move on to the final gripe: the second half of the story lacking the original punch of the first half. There isn't much I can say in this regard; It's true, I did not put as much passion or effort into the second half of the story. To be honest, I was done with the story at around chapter 15. So I apologize for this seemingly lack of creative writing. Maybe sometime in the future, when I am making decent money, I will go back and re-edit the story to be far more compelling.
That's all I have to say for now, if you have any other questions feel free to write a review or PM me!
