"Psychometry is fickle," Noll sighed. He had been awake for perhaps an hour, and was already being bombarded by so many questions. Noll turned to see Mai. She was still just staring at him, eyes glossy. She likely felt betrayed that he hadn't told her the truth.
"So what?! You're the best out there!" Ayako cried.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Noll groaned, "Matsuzaki-san… I have never seen a one hundred percent success rate with any psychic ability, mine included." He wasn't lying.
"And it failed twice?" Monk crossed his arms. "I'm going to assume you tried checking on Yasu."
Noll frowned, "No. I didn't have the chance. Do you recall anything that happened in the past week?"
Before Monk or Ayako could reply, Lin spoke, "He had plans to perform psychometry as soon as we finished this investigation."
The monk and miko were both silent.
Leaning back into the hospital bed, Noll asked, "Does anyone have an object that belongs to Yasuhara?" He wasn't too sure if he would see anything. Noll truly hoped he didn't…
"Naru, you're in no condition to do this now," Lin scolded.
"I'll be fine," Noll sighed.
He waited a moment, suspecting that no one had anything to offer, but then Mai spoke up.
"I have a book he let me borrow. Is that good enough?"
Looking to Mai, Noll said, "I guess we'll find out."
Mai jumped to her feet and snatched her bag from the floor. She fumbled through it before yanking out a book with a worn cover. A little hesitant, Mai offered the book to Noll.
Exhaling, Noll reached for it. He closed his eyes as soon as he gripped the leather binding. Much to his dismay, his grasp tightened around the book's spine and a stream of images flashed through his mind.
Noll was all too familiar with the scene. When he saw his own face from Yasu's last memory his eyes snapped open and he gasped. Though Noll had been expecting it, seeing himself like that...from someone else's perspective… It shocked him.
Lin moved quickly, and snatched the book from Noll's hand. It didn't do much to calm him.
"Naru…" Mai reached for his shoulder.
"Don't," Lin pulled her back. "He might unintentionally perform psychometry on you. Give him a minute."
Mai chewed on her lip and looked back to Ayako and Monk. The pair were staring, open-mouthed.
"Naru…?" Mai repeated. "What happened?"
"Trust me, none of you want to know," Noll managed out.
