The Way Forward - Chapter 32: The New Heir

.

Monday, July 11:

Press Conference, Suoh Headquarters:

"Thank you for coming. Though we continue to mourn my mother, Suoh Shizue's passing, business must continue.

"Today, I've called you all here to formally name my heir, the heir to the Suoh family and business, Suoh Tamaki."

-clapping-

"As the heir to the Suoh dynasty, Tamaki has both mine and my mother's full confidence. He will be taking over my seat on the Suoh Board of Directors as I assume the President's seat.

"Tamaki will continue his education at the University of Tokyo, majoring in both International Finance and Business."

I turned to my son and called him up to the podium.

"Thank you. I am deeply honored to be named the heir to the Suoh family and business. I've learned much from both my father and grandmother and will continue under my father's tutelage.

"I am confident the Suoh business will continue to prosper both under my father and eventually me. Speaking as a son, I wish for many years as the heir, with my father at the head."

Then the questions started…

"Suoh-sama, are you prepared for your seat on the board?"

"I've taken an active role on the Suoh Board of Directors in the last year and will continue to be productive as I take over my father's previous seat."

"Suoh-sama, I note that Houshakuji-sama is with you. When is the wedding?"

"The date has not changed. We will be wed when Houshakuji-san graduates for Ouran High School."

.

The questions went on forever. After they were finished with Tamaki-kun, they switched to his father. Those were the more business-oriented questions. He assured them business would continue and thrive under his direction.

Surprisingly, I hadn't thought he'd be leaving Ouran to focus more on the Suoh banking business. He told the reporters the interview process would start soon. I'm not sure what this will mean to Ouran. Hopefully, not much will change.

Overall, it was a complete success. My Tamaki-kun did himself proud.

Dr. Inoue's Office:

"I saw you all over Twitter this weekend."

"You and the rest of the world," I grumbled and leaned back in my chair, pulling my legs up and wrapping my arms around them.

"How did you react to the bombs going off?"

Terrible.

"Everyone was confused for a second, then they all started running. I was swept away with the crowd. I lost my earpiece and a shoe somewhere. We were all running away, and someone pushed me. I don't think it was on purpose."

I took a deep, slow breath to recenter myself. Now that I'm safe, it's not scary, but remembering on purpose is another thing.

"I fell and scraped my knee. Needed two stiches. I would have been trampled if I hadn't rolled under a bench."

"Sounds intense."

Intense? Try terrifying.

"It was. I made myself get up and run. I was too close to the noises. That's when I saw the little boy and grabbed him."

"I saw the pictures and the video. You saved that boy's life."

"If I hadn't been there, I'm sure someone else would have. Who'd let a kid get trampled?"

"You'd be surprised."

I thought about all the jerks I'd met in my life. The ones that threatened me. She's right. They wouldn't have.

We talked about the hospital. I really don't remember much until the Morinozuka's came in. I was frantic, and they gave me something that made me feel fuzzy.

"I'd like to forget the whole thing and move on, but it's been immortalized on the internet. I don't look at the coverage, though."

Sayo-san nodded and took some notes. "It was a traumatic experience. We can talk about it later if you need to."

"OK." I turned and looked out the window. Bright and sunny, like the rain cleaned the city.

"I'd like to talk about my grandparents." She nodded, and I continued. "They've sent a couple invitations for me to visit them for a weekend, and I've turned them down. I wasn't ready. Wasn't sure I'd ever be. Then Tamaki-senpai's grandmother died."

I stopped and thought about how he looked at the funeral. Lost. It didn't show often, but his mask dropped when he talked to his friends. Even Kyoya-senpai.

"They were beginning to repair their relationship, and now he'll never get to know her, never hear stories about his father's childhood or hers, never hear stories about his grandfather. I thought I was wasting the opportunity I had. I might regret it later."

"Have you decided something?"

"Yes." I dropped my feet to the floor and crossed my legs. This subject didn't make me near as uncomfortable as the other. "This Sunday, I have a photoshoot for Petto Chinmi. I don't want to visit for an entire weekend, especially on my first visit, so I'm going Saturday for a few hours."

"Sounds like fun."

"I don't know if I'd go that far. I don't know them. We've only had lunch, and the Morinozuka's were there. This time, they aren't coming."

"You're going alone?"

"My security will be there. If something goes wrong, and I need to leave, they'll get me out."

She took some more notes, and her foot was tapping. Does everyone who sees a therapist worry when they take notes? Like you failed something? Or answered the question wrong?

"I can understand not wanting your guardians there, but maybe you should reconsider going alone. Having a friend with you could ease the awkwardness."

It's not a bad idea. There'd be another person to keep the conversation going and help if things get weird. But who? Not either of the twins; too hyper. Satoshi and Chika don't have the right personalities. I can't handle Tamaki-senpai in that situation but Renge…

"I'll ask Renge. Of all my friends, she's the best at knowing when to change topics, move the conversation along, or be quiet. She won't make me feel awkward, and she'll be the buffer I need, if I need it."

"Sounds perfect."

Pizza Parlor:

I tossed my crust back on my plate and pushed it away. "I can't take another bite."

"Me neither."

"Yeah."

We have half a pizza left. Guess we didn't need to order four, but I knew Sasaki-san probably needs the leftovers. The rest of the guys have figured out what I've been up to and have helped her with food too and been nonchalant about it.

"Who gets the leftovers?"

"I'm not that big on just veggies on my pizza."

"That's all that's left."

"Sasaki-san can take them. Girls like vegetables."

She huffed but took the box. "Thanks guys." And I didn't have to say a thing. "I've got several long nights ahead of me. Huge test coming up in Advanced 3D Games & Digital Content Creation. The internship helps, but the class is kicking me hard. This will come in handy."

"Sure thing."

"Hey, Hikaru, how are the classes going?"

"Can't believe I actually volunteered to take classes I don't have to, but I'm learning a lot. Wouldn't have even been able to begin the zombie bunnies without them."

"Yeah, forgot to tell you, they tested great with the head of the games division. We made sure you got credit."

"Thanks." I feel less and less like the boss's son, and it's great.

"Any other ideas?"

"A couple, but I'm not sharing yet." They aren't fleshed out and could be stupid.

Sasaki-san dropped her share of the bill on the table and stood. "Thanks again guys, but I've got to go. That test is Friday, and I'd like to at least pass."

"I'm sure you'll do better than that."

She gave me a quick smile and shrugged her shoulders. "We'll see."

Would she benefit from our Wednesday study sessions and dinner? She'd get free food out of it. But none of us are taking her classes, so there's no one there to help her. Maybe I could invite her to dinner.

"Way to go, Hikaru. That was a cute smile she gave you."

"Yeah, you going to do something about it?"

Am I?

Dinner, Shido Estate:

"But Mom, please… Just the hospital. Only one."

"Sota, you opened the police station yesterday and the airport Sunday. How many do you need open at once?"

"All of them."

I looked down at my son and his smart mouth. And I'm having another one.

Then I remembered my childhood. The dolls I wanted. The stuffed animals. The video games. I never had any of them. Educational toys. That's all I was allowed.

Now, there's nothing wrong with educational toys, but flash cards, calligraphy sets, and writing books aren't complete without toys that spark the imagination. Any toy can be an educational toy.

"How many are left?"

"Three. The hospital, the apartments, the fire station." Now he's bouncing up and down, knowing I'm about to give in. I wasn't putting up that much of a fight anyway.

"Alright, come here." I bent down and whispered in his ear, "This is what we're going to do…"

.

I walk in the front door and hear a thundering headed my way.

"Uncle Akito! Uncle Akito! You're finally here!" Then I had Sota wrapped around my legs. "It's about time. You're late."

Actually, I'm early, but kids don't conceptualize time well.

"Come on. Come with me. You have a lot to do."

"I do?"

"Yeah."

His hand grabbed a couple of my fingers and pulled me up to his room. There was Yuki, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, surrounded by Lego.

"Mom said you'd help me put the hospital together tonight. Come on, Yuki-chan and I are on step three."

"How many steps are there?"

"Seventy-eight." She looked up at me with a sigh. "At least the pieces are bagged by step."

I sat down on the floor with them and picked up the instruction book. "You've got to be kidding me."

"Nope. Dig in."

I'll get Fuyumi for this.

.

Dinner's almost ready so I went up to Sota's room to check on their progress.

Yuki-chan's reading the instructions and pointing at the work in progress, while the boys are finding the pieces and clicking them on. Just like a little family.

"Dinner."

"Great! I'm hungry!" Sota leaps up and runs out the door while the other two are a little slower to rise.

"Fuyumi…"

"Did you enjoy yourselves?" When they didn't answer, I continued, "Wanted you to see what you might be getting into if you have kids."

Yuki-chan blushed bright red, and to my surprise, so did Akito.

Italian Restaurant:

"How long before we're a tweet?"

"Less than five."

Being one of the premier restaurants in Tokyo, the press lined the entrance. We were photographed and shouted questions as we walked in. We didn't comment.

"Do you have this problem in America?"

"No. I'm hardly ever recognized, and if I am, it's not big news. Businessmen aren't tabloid fodder like they are here. I'd have to be an actor to rate that kind of attention."

"Maybe I should move there."

Because it was expected, we both had wine with dinner, though I only sipped at mine. Tamaki learned early how to drink socially, but it wasn't that long ago I drank to hide. I'll not be doing that again.

Halfway through the appetizers, we were still talking about Stanford.

"You're paying for your guards to take classes?"

"Why not? They have to sit in there with me anyway. They get an education out of it that I hopefully can use. Took Tachibana a bit of shuffling to get the right people over, but it's working out."

"Are you going to have a study group?"

"Maybe."

Tamaki munched an olive while my mind wandered. As I get further along, they won't be taking every one of my classes. I have enough real-world experience to manage a bachelor's and an MBA in four years. Still, having a built-in study group isn't a bad thing.

"Kyoya?"

"Hmmm?"

"Are you doing anything fun there?" He picked up another olive. "Anything like normal college kids do?"

"I bought a hoodie."

I smirked as his infectious laugh filled the dining area. "A hoodie?"

"I was told they were popular with college students."

"It's a good start." Tamaki pulled out a sheet of paper. "Now you need to find a coffee shop."

"Why?"

"All college students hang out in coffee shops. They study, talk with their friends, listen to music. I'm sure there are several around campus. You just need to find the one you want to hang out in."

"And how do I do that?"

"First, you need to figure out what type of students you want to hang out with. The business students, art students, the fraternities, the athletes, or the slackers. Then find their coffee shop."

"Sounds complicated." Actually, it sounds excruciating.

"All you have to do it go to all the coffee shops and see what they're like. At the same time, you'll find the coffee you like the best. In America, ordering coffee is like a religion or something. Everyone has the perfect one they like with whip this and chi that. You'll have to find yours."

"Black."

"That's boring."

He looked at the paper again. "You need a car. No one drives around in limos there. A classic mustang would be perfect."

"Is that a list?"

"Yes. I came up with it after watching a lot of American college movies and TV shows."

Great. He's not just basing this on 'Animal House' is he?

"About the car…"

"Tamaki," I leaned back and sipped my wine. Maybe I do need it for this conversation. "I won't be driving myself. I'm the owner and head of the Ootori Conglomeration. Do you really think my security would allow that?"

"No?"

"That's right. Although we have found an armor-plated SUV for trips to campus."

"Good. You'd probably get teased if you showed up in a limo."

"Look at my face, Tamaki." I gave him my best shadow king glare. "Do you really thing anyone would tease me?"

He gulped hard and shook his head. "Moving on. Have you at least bought some normal clothes except for the hoodie?"

"Like?"

"Kyoya, the movies might be ridiculous, but any pictures on the internet show American college students wearing casual clothing. Like jeans, t-shirts, shorts, sweats. You'll look weird in a suit."

I wanted to argue, but knew he was right. Maybe I do need someone there to 'show me the ropes'. Besides, the more I stand out, the more of a security risk I am.

.

I watched as Kyoya finished his lasagna. He looks more rested, and I think he put on a little weight. Not fat, just filling out a bit. He always was too skinny.

"How are things with you and Renge?"

I know I light up when I talk about her. I can't help it. "Excellent. She's getting Suoh mansion #2 ready with a full remodel. I'll finally have the music room I've always wanted. One with perfect acoustics. And the wedding plans are moving forward. It will be the biggest wedding of the year."

"Tamaki, I meant how are the two of you doing?"

"Oh, wonderful. She's absolutely amazing. I wouldn't have made it through yesterday without her. I'm terrible at politics, but she actually likes it, kinda like you, so she helped me through it."

"And did a good job. I wanted to complement the two of you on your handling of yesterday. I'm sure it was difficult dealing with all those people who weren't there to mourn. I know you miss her."

"Thanks, Kyoya. I think there will always be a part of me that misses her. We were so close to fixing things." It's not fair, and I'm tired of people telling me life isn't fair.

"And the rest of the group?"

I know he's really asking about Haruhi. "You probably know that Naoko and Kaoru broke up. It was quite a horrible fight. Apparently, she was jealous of Haruhi and hit her in the face with a tennis ball."

When he didn't say something about ruining the Watanabe family, I figured he already knew all this. "How did you find out?"

"Through Ootori security. They guard Yuki-chan. Things get passed to me through Tachibana."

I nodded and finished my dinner.

The dessert was winding down when he asked, "Anything else on that list?"

"A few things, but one thing for sure. Get a backpack. You can't carry your laptop and books around in a briefcase. You'll look weird."

Shido Estate:

Akito-kun brought me out to the gardens after dinner and Sota-kun went to bed. He's obsessed with those Lego sets. He'll drag me into helping a couple more nights this week. I don't mind. He's a great kid. We've gotten to know each other well on our drives to Ouran in the mornings.

"Over here."

He had his arm around my shoulders, and mine was around his waist. It's comfortable to be held like this; it still makes my heart race.

He pulled me down to sit on the edge of the fountain, and we put our bare feet in the water. "Feels good," I sighed. It's been so hot lately.

"Yuki-chan," I turned to face him, "We've been talking about marriage a lot lately. You know me well enough to know I wouldn't be talking about it if I didn't think we'd be good together."

"Yes, I know."

"Well…"

I waited quietly. Is this the proposal? I know Fuyumi told him which rings I liked, but I'm not sure he purchased one.

"Well…" He cleared his throat. "Arranged marriages don't always take the feelings of the couple into consideration. I'm glad ours did. I'm glad we had the chance to get to know each other and decide if this would be right for us. Knowing it was our choice took pressure off both of us."

Why is he talking so weird? Is he…ending this?

He's hesitating again. Would he be doing this if it was good news?

"I wanted to…" He took a deep breath and tried again. "This isn't coming out like I wanted. I want you to know that not only do I think this marriage will work because we are becoming friends, but because I think I'm falling for you."

What?

"You're…You're falling for me? For me?"

His smile is amazing. "Yes, I am. When this started, I hoped we could become friends, but my expectations have been blown away. It's better than I could have ever hoped for."

"Really?"

"Definitely." He ran his fingers through his hair. He does that when he's nervous. "How do you feel about all this?"

How do I say this? I don't want to sound desperate or like a little girl.

"Yuki?"

I stared into his eyes and smiled. "I always knew I'd marry to help my father's business. I never expected to have a choice. These past months have been amazing. I think I'm falling for you too."

.

I think my heart exploded when she said that. Have I ever been this happy before?

My hands cupped her face, and my lips landed on hers. It was a soft kiss. Gentle. My lips playing with hers. We'd kissed like this before. I didn't want to scare her.

"Ahhh, Akito," she whispered between light kisses, and my stomach flipped.

Then she pulled away and stood up in front of me. Did I push too hard? With a flirty little smile, she climbed into my lap, straddling my legs. My entire scalp tingled when she ran her hands into my hair and grabbed. Then she kissed me.

.

He's falling for me. Akito-kun is falling for me.

The kisses were too gentle. All I could think was how much I wanted him to touch me.

I pulled him tight and pressed harder with my lips. He gave up the gentle nips and turned aggressive.

When his tongue touched mine there's nothing I could compare it to. He still tastes like dessert but also like him.

Now his hands are on my hips. My t-shirt doesn't come past the top of my shorts, and his thumbs are rubbing my bare skin.

If this is what it's like, I never want him to let me go.

.

Her skin is so soft. She tastes so good.

Can't go crazy.

Can't scare her.

Let her take the lead and stop if it goes too far.

We're not married yet. Not even engaged.

But her skin is so soft.

.

Fuyumi said Akito and Yuki-chan were out here somewhere. Their gardens are too big with no organization.

The faint splashing led me to one of the bigger fountains.

Then I heard a moan.

There they were. Akito sitting on the edge of the fountain, his feet in the water. Yuki-chan straddling his lap, her hands in his hair. He's gently running his hands up and down her bare legs while kissing her for all he's worth.

Guess I won't be saying goodbye before I go back to California tomorrow.

.

He was right to stop us when he did. Once Akito-kun realized his hand was up the back of my shirt, he froze, and I froze with him.

Now, I'm soaking in a hot bath, running my hands along my legs just like he did.

He treats me like I'm precious to him. I never thought I'd have that.

Tuesday, July 12:

Lunch, Ouran Dining Hall:

"No, Ritsu. It's 23 pairs of chromosomes, 46 total."

"You sure?"

"Yep."

"Doesn't make any sense."

"Doesn't have to. That's what it is. Just remember it."

I looked over at Bu and said, "This isn't what I had in mind when you said we should study biology together."

"Get you mind out of the gutter and tell me the difference between mitosis and meiosis."

"I have no fucking clue."

.

"What's the manga for?"

I raised my voice, hoping to only have to go through this a couple of times. "Lighthouse is a center for human trafficking victims. They're our charity today. Because the subject is so difficult to discuss, they published a manga, 'Blue Heart', to educate Japanese youth about trafficking."

"What do they do?"

"Lighthouse provides confidential consultation services for survivors, helps them get back on their feet, and provides work assistance. They also educate and train law enforcement and government officials."

"But Chika, do those things really happen in Japan?"

"Yes. Human trafficking, especially sex trafficking, happens more than you'd ever think in this country. Some are recruited from other countries and promised a better life here, then forced into the sex trade."

"Forced by who? Yakuza?"

That's when Shinobu-senpai took over. Loudly. "First, not all human traffickers are yakuza. Second, not all yakuza are human traffickers." She put her hands on her hips and stared down the second-year. "I'm the heir to the Himura Syndicate. If you think for one minute, I'd put up with that shit in my organization, you're insane. We have absolutely nothing to do with that and never will."

"Neither does the Kasanoda Syndicate," Kasanoda-senpai said while he glared at the girls.

They both sat back down and went back to their studying, and I took up the explanation. "As a matter of fact, Shinobu-senpai donated all the manga copies herself to help everyone at Ouran better understand what's going on."

Then we all heard Shinobu-senpai growl. I'm sure it was at the biology, but everyone standing around thought it was at them. I've never seen donations handed over that quickly.

By the time lunch was over, all the manga copies were gone.

Petto Chinmi:

"Where are we on the factory bids?"

"Three have been turned in. So far, there's only one standout. The lawyers have done their investigations and are sure there are no issues."

"If we haven't heard back from any others by Friday, let's plan on inspecting that one. I assume we're getting low on inventory."

"Yes, but not at emergency levels yet."

Haruhi-sama's hand flew across her notebook as I caught her up on things at the office. She'd been leading the meeting so far, but I couldn't let this wait much longer.

"How are you doing after Saturday's incident?"

She sighed heavily and cocked her head at me. "I take it you saw the hashtags?"

"And the news."

"Great." She dropped her pen and shut her notebook. "I have no idea how this will all play out in the press, but as for physically, I'm fine. A cut on my knee that needed a couple stiches and some bumps and bruises. No big deal."

"The interview with the mother was quite moving."

"I wish Eiji could have found her before she did that. He would have tried to talk her out of it. It was completely unnecessary."

"Well, between the bombing, the boy, and your kimono at the funeral, your profile has shot up. I have concerns about the photoshoot Sunday."

Her eyes narrowed. "What concerns?"

"We have permits to shoot in the parks, but not to clear them for us. If you're recognized…"

"Which I will be."

I nodded. "Yes. When you're recognized, it could become impossible to finish the shoot."

"And we need those pictures right away."

"Yes." I waited a beat, then said, "I don't have a solution though."

She leaned back in her chair and crossed her legs. She winced then recrossed them the other way. That must be the stiches.

"We're basically needing expanses of grass, a place to set up the dog bath, and other random outside elements, right?"

"Yes. Standard park settings."

"I have an idea."

She picked up the phone and dialed.

.

"Aoi-san, is Umeko-san available?"

"Umeko-san…"

"Yes, everything is fine. I'm at the office as planned."

"Actually, I have a request."

"My Petto Chinmi photoshoot is scheduled for Sunday. We have permits to shoot in three area parks but not to have the parks cleared. Tanaki-san and I are concerned about my recent media exposure. If I'm recognized, we might not get the pictures we need."

"Thank you for the offer. That's exactly what I was going to ask. I hope it's not too great of an imposition."

"I really appreciate it. I'll have the advertising firm get in touch with Aoi-san today."

"Thanks again."

"I'm sorry. No, I don't think I'll be home for dinner, but I'll be home before eight."

"Thanks again. Goodbye."

.

I hate doing that. Asking them for even more after they've given me so much.

I dropped my phone and looked up at Tanaki-san. "Umeko-san agreed to let us do the shoot on the Morinozuka grounds."

"That's a good idea. The entire area will be under control. No press, no observers. Nothing. It's perfect."

"Let's get the photoshoot director on the phone and explain the change to him. He'll need to call the estate and get a tour so he can plan for Sunday."

Himura's Strip Club Law Firm:

"The police have finished inspecting all the clubs and their paperwork and are releasing all the buildings."

"Even the one where we found the girls and women?"

"Yes. They've collected all the evidence they need."

"Alright. This is what we're going to do." I took a sip of tea and launched into my plans. "I've hired a business manager to oversee all the clubs. He'll be your point of contact, as he'll be handling the day-to-day business. You can always contact me if you need to, of course." I handed them his information. "I'll bring him along for the next meeting and then hand it all over to him. He has some catching up to do before we can move forward."

"That's fine. There's no reason to rush anything."

"I'm having him assess the locations of all the clubs and evaluate them based on profit, clientele, and local businesses. The goal is to keep the ones in the best locations, the locations that allow for upgrading them to gentlemen's clubs. Then we'll get rid of the ones that can't be cleaned up."

I recrossed my legs and caught one of the paralegals staring at them. He looked the other way after I glared at him. Yeah, OK, my legs are hot, but Ritsu is the only one who can drool over them.

"The police did find evidence of money laundering in the paperwork of the clubs but are letting it go as they are now under new management." My lawyer looks like he ate a lemon. "Expect to be audited within the first year."

"Noted, and I'm not surprised. I would have expected that anyway."

"They are also going to let you handle the pictures we found as long as they have your assurances that the cameras will be removed."

"I assume you assured them of that. The only cameras in the clubs will be the legal security cameras. They're welcome to check any time after opening."

"That's what I told them."

"Good. The last thing for today is the building where we found the girls and women. I want it demolished and cleaned from the lot. Completely. I don't want that place to exist. After that, we'll sell the property and donate the entire price to Lighthouse."

"Excellent idea." He took a few notes and added, "I'll confirm that plan with the police just in case they may want to look at the building one more time."

"Fine." I closed my portfolio and finished my tea. "My new business manager will be in contact and start to take over any responsibilities you have that he should. Then, we'll all meet again in a few weeks."

"Excellent. I'll walk you out."

As we headed to the elevator, I could feel that paralegal's eyes on my ass. Enough of this shit. I spun around on my spiked heel. "This is a professional setting, and you need to keep your eyes off my ass. If you want to look at women that much, keep two things in mind. First, I'm under eighteen, you pervert. And second, I know several strip clubs that will take your money and let you drool all over yourself while you watch."

I kept my smirk to myself as my lawyer tried his best to apologize for his employee. I bet today is that jerk's last day.

Ritsu: Holy shit, you're hot. Where'd you get that?

Bu: Had Hikaru design it. Wanted something edgier than Kaoru's line. Can never go wrong with leather. [another pic attached showing her from the back, stepping into her limo, the slit in the back showing off her thighs.]

Ritsu: You sure wearing that in public is legal?

Bu: Who's going to stop me?

Ritsu: Somethings are just for me to see, you crazy chick.

Bu: Yeah. I got a paralegal fired today. Wouldn't stop staring at my ass.

Ritsu: You didn't stab him with those heels?

Bu: Let his boss deal with it. More fun actually

Ritsu: You coming over?

Go Salon:

After failing to keep my mind on the game I was playing, I decided to watch instead. It's an insult to not give your opponent your all.

So much is going on, I can't seem to concentrate on any one thing. It's crazy. And now Cho, Yuki, Renge, and Shinobu want to go out shopping. Shopping. I just did that with Umeko-san. I don't need anything else. I didn't even need what she bought me.

And a spa day? A wax? Isn't that painful?

Getting ready for this trip is taking more out of me than I thought, but I can't wait to get there. I'm not taking any work and only my art history school stuff. I'm going to lie on the beach and sleep and read and eat.

I need a break so badly.

Wednesday, July 13:

Renge's Estate:

"Tamaki-senpai, how's the driving going?"

He looked up from his books and grimaced. "I haven't wrecked a car. My security seem surprised by that."

"Well, you do have trouble focusing on just one thing, Senpai." I think maybe Haruhi's the only one besides Renge who could get away with saying that.

He threw his shoulders back and straightened his back, "I always pay attention to the road and car when I'm driving."

"Is that why you hit a tree, Boss?"

"It was a bush, you devil twin, a bush!"

"You still hit something."

"It was my first day."

Haruhi cleared her throat, "Have you mastered driving, Hikaru?"

That shut him up.

"So, who here does have their license?" They all looked at me. "I don't, but I know how to drive a car and a motorcycle. You can get away with more shit in the yakuza."

"Yeah, me too. Car and motorcycle," Bu smirked, not even looking up from her laptop. What is she doing over there? The biology test is over.

"Mom won't let us learn until we graduate. I guess she thinks it will keep us in school." Must be Kaoru. Hikaru wouldn't admit his mom wouldn't let them do something.

"I have mine!" Honey-senpai jumped up and put his hands in the air. "I don't use it much, but I got it. I think I'm going to have a car decorated special for the bakeries and drive that. It will be pink with Usa-chan's all over it. Even in the leather seats. I want a convertible and when the roof is up, there are bunny ears."

Chika sighed and rolled his eyes. "Your security team won't let you do that, Alien. You're the heir, remember?"

Poor Honey-senpai. He's pouting. "They won't?"

"No, but maybe you could compromise on something. It is for your business after all." Damn, two years ago Chika would have never said something that nice to his brother.

"I'll talk to them right now!" and he jumped up and ran out to the front where his detail's waiting with his limo.

Cho-senpai shook her head. "Well, we'll see what comes of that. I suggested having the delivery vans for the bakeries decorated, and he took it a step further." She closed her book and dropped her pen. "I have mine, and my driver took me out in the limo to make sure I could drive it. You never know when you might have to take your security into your own hands."

Shit. I can't even picture Cho-senpai tearing down streets, driving like crazy, trying to get away from some kidnappers. Guess they won't either.

"I've had mine since I was 15. Father taught me." Renge shrugged. "Laws are different in France. I'll get mine here as soon as I turn 18."

"I'm not sure I want one," Yuki said. "Driving seems so scary."

I saw Haruhi nod and figured she might not get one either. Not after what happened with her dad. She's either got her security or public transportation, not that they'll ever let her take it.

Time to change the subject.

"Can't wait for next week. What's everyone want to do?"

Ranka's:

As everyone walked in, my eyes found Haruhi. Her dark green sundress hugged her hips, and the skirt swayed. I wasn't expecting her to dress up. It's only a soft opening.

"Welcome to Ranka's."

I asked our group to come earlier than the host club guests and their boyfriends.

"Haruhi! Baby! It's been too long!" One of the ladies scooped her up in a huge hug. "We've all missed you." She was pulled along and taken backstage to see all the other performers. I know she's missed seeing them too.

"Wow, Mori-senpai, this place is amazing."

.

Mori-senpai pulled his eyes away from the backstage door and looked at us. It was hard to hide my smirk. I've known for a while he's got a thing for Haruhi, but it's becoming more obvious.

"What's up, Bu?"

"Nothing. I'll tell you later."

Ritsu took my hand and squeezed. "You better."

"The others should start arriving in about fifteen minutes." Tamaki-senpai checked his watch. "I'm all set with the speech."

"What speech?" I guess if Renge doesn't know, none of us does.

"Mori-senpai asked me to say a few words before the night starts. We're the only ones that know this is his club, so don't give it away. If we do this right, no one will know."

"Is there a reason you want to remain anonymous, Mori-senpai?" Yuki asked. She said Akito-san would be joining us soon. Guess he's included in that.

"Don't want the press. Better business if owners are mysterious."

That's when Haruhi came back. "The dressing rooms are amazing, Takashi. They're everything they always wanted."

"Hn." And he smiled at her.

"There's a show tonight too?"

"Yes. It's our first performance in front of a full audience, darlings. It will be exquisite just for you."

"Everyone, this is Egusa Megu. She was the show manager at my dad's bar. Almost all of the ladies here worked with my dad."

"Greetings," he, or is it she?, opened her arms wide as a welcome. "Tonight, we'll all make history by performing in the most glamorous Okama Club in Tokyo!"

Another cross-dresser stuck her head out from backstage, "Megu-chan, if you don't get back here, the rest of the guests will see you before you're ready."

"Oh, Goddess! Can't have that." With a quick nod to Mori-senpai, she vanished.

"Ah, Haruhi?" I caught her attention. "What are the pronouns for the performers?"

"Excellent question. Some have different preferences than others, but the safest is she/her/hers when they're in drag and he/him/his when wearing men's clothes. If they prefer something else, they'll let you know."

"Thanks."

"Thank you for asking, Shinobu. Not everyone does."

"Our tables are down in front," Tamaki-senpai pointed. "The former hosts will form a reception line at the door to welcome the other attendees. Everyone treat Mori-senpai as just another host."

He took Renge's hand and put it on his arm. "Gentlemen, let's escort our ladies to their seats then return for the receiving line."

.

Dinner service is going well. Morinozuka-sama wanted the full menu available to fully test the kitchens. My kitchens.

When I moved to Japan with my husband, I never expected to get a job so quickly and work for such a famous person. With Daichi has his personal assistant and me as his kitchen manger for Ranka's, Morinozuka-sama has completely changed our lives.

"CRASH"

I dashed over to the service area and found and entire table's meals on the floor. The expediter was already reordering the meal on the fly, and staff was cleaning up the floor.

"What happened?"

The young, female server was staring at the floor. "I apologize, Lewis-san. I didn't balance the tray properly. It's my fault." She's practically in tears.

"Slow down. Focus. This is a soft opening where we can all find out our weaknesses and fix them." She looked up at me, her lips quivering. "Think about how it happened and don't let it happen again. Alright?"

She nodded, "Yes, Lewis-san."

"Good. I think your next table is ready."

I'll recommend more servers to Morinozuka-sama. She's not the only one who looks rushed. Just another difference between American and Japanese restaurants.

.

"This food is amazing."

"Some of the best I've ever had."

"And the show! I never would have thought watching men dressed as women performing would be so exciting."

"They are quite good."

.

"Takashi?"

I leaned over to listen to Haruhi over the music, "Hn?"

"This is delicious, and I'm hearing lots of positive comments."

"Thank you. It seems to be going well."

She nodded and took another bite. Her approval is what I'm after. She'll know best how this club should look and feel.

Saturday scared me. I didn't find out until after the finals, but to open my phone and read texts of a bombing where she was…

Why do things always seem to happen to her when I'm gone?

.

As desserts were served, I got up on stage with Megu-chan for my second speech.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you again for coming to 'Ranka's' soft opening. We hope you enjoyed your dinners and desserts."

I paused for clapping and affirmative exclamations.

"Is anyone in the mood to dance!" Megu-chan yelled.

More clapping and positive yelling.

"Well, darlings, the disco floor is open for business tonight. The DJ is ready to party, party, party. And the bars are open for non-alcoholic drinks!" They couldn't have any with dinner either. Can't serve until the club is officially open.

"Please follow us up to the next floor!"

Then she took my arm and led a line of performers to the stairs. I didn't expect that, but when I turned around, I saw Kaoru offer his arm to Renge-chan. Maybe that devil twin isn't completely hopeless.

.

Takashi offered me his arm, and we joined the crowd heading to the disco. The music was pounding through the floor already, and I could hear the girls in front of us squealing.

"Now you'll get to see it in action." I nodded, not wanting to yell back at him.

We got to the top of the stairs, and I froze. "Wow!" The disco balls were spinning, throwing out sparkles everywhere. Most of the guests were already on the dance floor, the squares lighting up to the beat.

I felt a gentle nudge and started walking again. Takashi was smiling. "It's different when it's full."

"It's amazing when it's full."

He walked me over to the VIP section, which was clearly marked for the former hosts. Tamaki-senpai thought it would be best, so anyone wanting to dance with a host could find them easier. I hope no one asks me. I can't dance to this. I'll look like even more of an idiot than when I dance to other things.

A server set a bottle of tea in front of me and gave Takashi a bottle of water. "Thank you." She nodded back.

"I let them know it's your favorite."

"Thanks, Takashi. You're always looking out for me."

.

"Shit, Asshole. Look at this place." This place is fucking amazing. Disco balls, laser lights, neon across the stage. And the floor! Light up cubes pulsing with the music. It's better than 'Neon'.

I felt his teeth nip my earlobe. "I want to see you in one of those cages." The shiver down my spine had be quaking in my spiked heels.

Then my mind flashed to those animals. Then to those women.

"Bu, what's wrong? You OK?"

I realized I'd almost collapsed on him. "No."

He pulled me over to the VIP section and sat me down across a low table from Haruhi and Mori-senpai, our backs to the dance floor. By now I couldn't catch my breath but did my best to hide it from those two.

"Hey," he put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me against his chest, "just breathe." Ritsu's hand rubbed circles on my back, and I slowly calmed down.

"Need the bathroom?" I shook my head. "Wanna leave?" I shook my head again.

"Just need a minute."

"Sure, Bu. What ever you need." I felt a kiss on my temple, then he was handing me a bottle of water.

.

What the fuck was I thinking saying I wanted her in a cage? How big a moron can I be? After those animals and girls? Fucking idiot.

Maybe I should say something to Mori-senpai. Other people could have the same reaction when they see them.

Someone handed me a bottle of water, and I gave it to Bu. Once she chills for a few minutes, I think I'll take her home.

"Is there something I can help with, Ritsu?" I looked up to see Haruhi. She must have given me the water.

"No. Just a headache."

Mori-senpai came around and said, "There's a third-floor lounge. It's not open for everyone tonight, but I thought the group might want to see it. It's been soundproofed as much as possible."

"Thanks. I'll take you up on that."

We followed him behind the bar, being careful no one was watching. An elevator took us up.

.

Takashi said he'd be right back and ruffled my hair. It's such a genuine gesture. Makes me feel safe.

Hikaru came up to my seat. "Hey, Haruhi! Want to dance?"

"No."

"Aw, come on. Mori-senpai wants the place checked out. We can test the dance floor."

"Don't you think those fifty people already out there are doing that?"

"Not like us." He grabbed my hand and pulled. "Come on."

"You're hurting me!" I pulled my arm back. "Let go."

"Shit!" He dropped my hand and stepped back. "I'm so sorry. I forgot. I'm so excited. Please forgive…"

"Calm down." I'd stood up and put a hand on his shoulder. "I know you didn't mean it. I think it surprised us both."

"No shit."

I tilted my head and smirked, "Do you think you can go one night without saying that word?"

"What, 'no'?" I just stared, and he laughed. "I'll fucking try."

I burst out laughing. "Come on and dance. The best part about disco is everyone looks like an idiot dancing to it." I glanced over the dance floor. He's right.

"OK, but just for a few minutes."

.

"Thanks, Mori-senpai. This is perfect."

"I'll send someone up to serve you. Stay as long as you need."

Bu and I sat down, and she put her head on my shoulder. "Sorry about this. I should be stronger."

"Fuck that. You are you, and that's all that matters. The best part about us is we help each other."

"Yeah, we do."

"Damn right we do."

.

When I came back down, Haruhi wasn't where I'd left her.

Several horrible things went through my head before I saw her dancing with Hikaru. He must have insisted.

"Hey, Mori-senpai, this is great." Kaoru was holding a glass of soda and bouncing to the beat.

"Hn."

"Your performers sure do know how to put on a show." He pointed up. The cages were all filled, some with performers and some with host club guests.

"I never thought the guests would want to be in those."

"I'm not sure they've ever seen any. Guess they want to try them."

He nudged me with his elbow. "Haruhi looks uncomfortable. Why don't you go save her?"

So, I did.

.

"Honey-kun?"

Cho-chan is gorgeous tonight. Pink dress and shoes. They light up like sparklers when the lasers touch them.

We were just stepping off the dance floor to get a drink.

"This might sound a little strange, but would you kiss me and see how this lip gloss tastes?"

What?

"What?"

"Kiss me and taste my lip gloss."

What?

She's smiling, just standing there.

Then her smile turned into a smirk, she reached up, grabbed my collar, and pulled my face to hers.

"Kiss me."

Then she planted her lips on mine. And steam came out of my ears. And Usa-chan's too, and he's at home.

When she let go, I licked my lips. "CAKE!"

"Do you like it?"

I answered her with another kiss.

.

"Where did you learn all these dances, Renge-chan?"

I'd taught him the bus stop, funky chicken, and a couple others. "I looked them up when I knew we were coming here."

He's so cute. I can't wait to marry this man.

.

"Thanks, Takashi. I told him one dance, but he kept begging for more."

"There are plenty of other dance partners for him here."

"True."

We were back in the VIP section, and she looks bored. "Is there something you'd like to do besides dance?"

"Actually," she nibbled on her lower lip, "I'd like to go up to the lounge. This place is terrific, but not really my thing."

"No problem. I was thinking the same thing." And I'm not letting you out of my sight again tonight.

Walking towards the door, she stopped me, "How about we grab Akito-san and Yuki? He looks like I feel."

"Hn."

.

"Ladies! Who wants to learn the electric slide?"

My ears are going to ring for hours with all this screaming.

They all lined up behind me, and I shook my butt a little for them and listened to the squealing.

"Satoshi's so handsome."

"I know. I haven't seen him at 'Neon' for a while."

"He's been training for the Olympics."

"I wonder if he'll start coming here."

"No, he can't. Eighteen and over only. He's got another year or so to go."

"Guess I have to stick with 'Neon' for now."

I hid my smile and demonstrated the steps. Then, I walked around and danced with several of them.

This is crazy. Takashi owns this place. Maybe he could ignore the rules for me.

.

Two nights ago, Akito-kun told me he's falling for me, and tonight I'm dancing here in his arms. He has me pulled up against him with my head on his chest and his chin on my head. We're barley moving.

"This is much more my pace than the disco," he said, and I felt his chest vibrate. I reached up and put my hand on his chest, next to my face.

"Me too. The disco's fun for a group of friends but is too loud for talking." Not that we're doing much of that.

"Are you ready for next week?"

"Almost. The girls are all going out for some last-minute shopping and then a spa day on Friday. Can't go on vacation looking like a hot mess."

"Hot, definitely, but I've never seen you look like a mess."

I raised my head and he kissed me.

.

Overall, the evening went well. Everyone had fun, and the food was well received.

The advantage of no one knowing I own the club is that I can disappear without them noticing. I spent the rest of the evening up in the lounge with Haruhi.

With just the seven of us (Kasanoda, Shinobu, Akito, Yuki, Chika, Haruhi, and me), there was plenty of space to spread out and be in our own worlds. Akito and Yuki danced slowly the whole time. Shinobu eventually fell asleep on Kasanoda's shoulder, and Chika worked on his phone, but left early.

As for Haruhi and me, we danced, talked, and sat quietly with each other.

It was perfect.

Disclaimer: I do not own any part of Ouran High School Host Club. I also do not own, nor am I making any money from, the following: Olympics, Lego, Duplo, any real restaurant, business, artist, food product, or really anything else that exists. I do, however, own any original characters and the plot of this story.

Author's Note:

I know some of you were probably hoping for more of Haruhi talking about the bomb and funeral with her therapist, but I went a different way. I see that weekend building back up on her for a later discussion.

Sasaki-san (Hikaru's intern friend)…not sure what to do with her. Dad's and my plan was only ever to be friends. I thought Hika needed a female friend outside the group. Should I include her in study and dinner Wednesdays?

OK, I just can't help playing around with Sota and Lego. When I stop and think about the ultra-rich kids and their toys, I can picture a room filled with nothing but Lego for him rather than getting it set by set. Maybe I'm headed in that direction now that we know he loves it.

I know some of you have asked for Kyoya/Keiko scenes. They're coming. How about she's the one that show's him the ropes? Not sure about a romance. I still see him marrying for business.

Well, Akito and Yuki are heating up. I know we've talked about them getting married before they graduate, and the most votes are for not doing it. It's going to get harder if they keep getting cuter.

The Ranka's scenes aren't as fluffy as I was hoping. I played with them up until posting, but still not as happy as I want to be. I'll make up for it with the vacation. Extreme fluff there.

.

Next Chapter:

Haruhi's visit to her grandparents. Petto Chinmi photoshoot, Spa and shopping. And we learn a BIG secret about Renge!
