11 months later…
I just filed for adoption this morning. We're graduating in a few days. KC and I were up on the stage. Marley joined us, sitting at the drums. Aaron was sitting with Maya. I smiled at him.
"This is our last song of the evening," I said into the mic. "Almost a month ago, I married the love of my life," This earned an awww from Maya, Riley, and Lucas. "Today, I put in adoption papers to adopt our son, Aaron. He may not be my biological son, but blood doesn't make family, love does." Everyone smiled at me "So, here's 'My Boy' by Elvie Shane."
I started playing my guitar, then started singing.
He ain't got my smile, that don't bother me a bit/ He's got somebody else's eyes I'm seeing myself in/
He has KC's smile and Jaxon's eyes.
I'm holding on to every moment, God knows I've missed a few/ The day we met I knew I had some catching up to do
I looked straight at Aaron.
He ain't my blood, ain't got my name/ But if he did, I'd feel the same/ I wasn't there for his first steps/ But I ain't missed a ball game yet/ And that ain't ever gonna change/ I could never walk away/ Yeah, he's my son and that's my choice/ He ain't my blood but he's my, he's my boy
Marley started playing drums. KC playing piano and singing.
It hit me like a train, the first time he called me dad/
I remembered when he first called me "daddy".
In a three stick figure crayon picture with all of us holding hands/ His mama said, "I understand if it's too soon for this"/ I didn't let her finish, I took it to the kitchen and I stuck it on the fridge, yeah
I looked at KC.
I'll always love him like he's my own.
He's Saturday morning cartoons/ He's "Hey, can I sleep in your room?"/ He's bigger than the plans I had/ He's making me a better man
He ain't my blood, ain't got my name/ But if he did, I'd feel the same/ I wasn't there for his first steps/ But I ain't missed a ball game yet/ And that ain't ever gonna change/ I could never walk away/ Yeah, he's my son and that's my choice/ He ain't my blood but he's my, he's my boy/ Yeah, he's my, he's my boy
We finished.
I took my guitar off and put in on its stand. Aaron jumped out of his seat and ran to me. He jumped into my arms. I held him up. He smiled at me. I looked at his ears. He seems to be getting used to his hearing aids.
"I love you, dad," he told me.
"I love you, too, Aaron," I replied.
"Can we go out for pizza?" He questioned, hopefully.
He looked at KC, then back at me. KC and I exchanged looks.
"Sure," I answered.
Approximately 3 months later, September 23rd…
All three of us stood before the judge.
"Farkle Minkus, do you willingly agree to the adoption of Lucas Aaron?" The Judge questioned me.
"Yes, I do, completely," I answered with a smile.
"Katy Carmela Minkus, do you agree with the adoption of Lucas Aaron by your husband, Farkle Minkus?"
"Yes, I agree," KC confirmed.
"Now, Lucas Aaron," the judge said, gaining his full attention, "are you in favor of Farkle Minkus adopting you? Do you agree to it?"
"Yes," he said, very formally.
"Then, I hereby finalize the adoption of Lucas Aaron Minkus," the judge announced. "Congratulations."
Aaron smiled. We left the courthouse, with finalization papers and the new birth certificate. We're keeping the original, now non-legal copy, so that he'll remember Jaxon as his dad, too.
Topanga texted KC.
"What is it?"
"She said that Auggie wants to see Aaron," she said.
"Sure," I said.
We drove over to their apartment building. When we walked inside we heard a collective SURPRISE! We smiled. We saw all of our family and friends.
They congratulated us and we spent a couple of hours talking about how the trial went and how happy we were about it. Aaron talked my parents' ears off about everything he liked about the judge, which was surprisingly a lot.
We went home after the celebration and spent time watching a movie. After we put Aaron to bed, I sat on the couch, staring at the certificate that said the name Lucas Aaron Minkus.
KC sat next to me.
"This was one of those moments, wasn't it?"
"What moments?"
"The kind of moments that you'll remember forever," she said.
"Yeah," I said. "Riley said Lucas said that on their first date."
"Jaxon said same thing on ours," she informed me, "and about the day they met me."
"Really?"
"Where do you think Lucas learned that idea?" She questioned with a small laugh. "He learned a lot from Jaxon."
"Well, the same stands with me," I told her, "I'll never forget the day I met you."
"I love you," she told me.
"I love you, too," I replied. "I'll always be right by your side for the rest of my life."
