A/N Sorry I didn't keep up with the speed of the updates, but I was out of town for a few days. Thank you again for all your wonderful reviews. They mean so much to me. I am still borrowing the main characters.
In the End, the search to find a venue for the wedding was easier than they thought. Amy was thrilled when they agreed to use the same venue that she and Sheldon had used, the Athenaeum at Caltech. The date turned out to be easy too because there were only a few dates open.
Sheldon immediately declared that the choice was obvious. He informed them that Stephen Hawking was born on January eighth. The guys quickly agreed but the girls were a little less excited. Everyone enthusiastically came on board however when Penny found that Elvis Presley and David Bowie were born on the same day.
After checking with Penny's parents and sister, they started to plan to send out wedding invitations. Although Leonard was still not sure about it, they did decide to talk to Hayley and Michael about their kids being in the wedding.
With him being a little closer to his sister, Leonard called her first.
"Hello."
"Hello, Hayley, this is Leonard."
"Leonard, I am glad you called. I had been planning to talk to you. I was sorry to hear that you had gotten a divorce, but then Mother told me that Penny had called her and told her you were engaged, so I guess congratulations are in order."
"Thank you, Hayley. Speaking of Penny, she is with me and I am going to put her on speaker."
"Hello, Penny." She hesitated, "I think we talked once when you were in California before."
"Yes, we did. I hope everything is okay with you."
"Yes, my research is going well. John and I have been pleased with how excellently Dawn is doing in her classes. We were a little nervous when we got her in such a prestigious school."
Leonard rolled his eyes a little as Penny admonished him with a look.
Leonard got back on, "Actually, it is Dawn we wanted to talk to you about. We are planning to get married in January and wondered if it could be possible to have Dawn be our flower girl."
Hayley was shocked. They wanted Dawn to be in their wedding? She smiled to herself, how could they even be sure she and her husband wanted to attend. But then she felt ashamed of herself. She had always regretted she had not gone to his first wedding. It was true they had plans, but it was also true they could have rearranged their schedule. She also realized she would like to see Leonard and meet Penny. She had often felt guilty when she had seen how her Mother had treated Leonard when he was young but did not have the courage to stand up to her mother.
After a long silence, "I would have to check with John, but I am sure he would agree that we would be honored to have Dawn be in your wedding. What is the actual date? Do you know what color the bridesmaids will be wearing?"
Penny and Leonard were stunned, Penny finally got out, "The date is January 8. I haven't picked out the Bridesmaid dresses yet."
"Well, when you do, be sure to let me know. In fact, send me a picture. I want to be sure that Dawn will fit in."
Still struggling with what had happened. Leonard and Penny agreed to keep her informed and again accepting her congratulations, thanked her and saying their goodbyes, hung up.
Penny had to smile at the look on Leonard's face. He smiled and said, "Are we sure we called my sister?"
Penny laughed, "I'm sure." She got serious, "Maybe she feels stronger for you than you think."
Leonard didn't look completely convinced but nodded.
Deciding to maintain the momentum, Leonard hesitantly called his brother. When his wife Diane answered, he asked to talk to Michael.
"Hello, Leonard, to what do I owe this call?"
"Hello, Michael. I am going to put you on speaker, Penny is here with me."
"Ah yes, Penny. Mother told me you were engaged. She was surprised it was so soon after your divorce." Smirking, "I also understand you called our Mother a Bitch."
Penny stammered, "I am sorry I said that."
"Oh, no, don't say that. Everyone, including Mother, knows she is a Bitch. It is one of the things I admire about her."
Penny looked in surprise at Leonard who just shrugged.
"The reason I am calling, Michael, is that we have set a wedding date of January 8.' He hesitated, "We were wondering if David could serve as Ring Bearer."
There was a long silence, "Have you considered the fact that it is entirely possible we will not be able to attend the wedding. We are both quite busy."
Before Leonard could answer, there was a voice in the background, "What is this about a wedding?"
Michael sighed, "If you can believe it, Leonard is asking whether David could serve as Ring Bearer at his wedding."
"When is it?"
"January 8, but…"
"We don't have anything planned, tell him David would be honored."
His voice became muffled as he moved the phone from his mouth, "You actually want to travel to California? I mean, this is his second wedding. Why should we attend this one when we skipped the first?"
"Because we did skip the first. He is your brother, Michael. Besides, I am looking forward to meeting Penny. She seems like an unlikely person to marry Leonard. Now get back on the phone and tell them we will be glad to attend." She hesitated, "Oh, and ask what the Groomsmen are wearing."
Leonard and Penny had been looking at each other in shock as they wondered what was going on.
When Michael came back on the line, they were stunned when he said he and Diane would be proud to attend and have David be part of the wedding. When he asked about the Groomsmen attire, they told him they would let them know.
After hanging up, Leonard could not stop shaking his head and marveling at what had just happened.
The final piece of the puzzle was complete when Sheldon informed Penny and Leonard that his mother was able to perform weddings. She had helped Leonard with Sheldon on several occasions and he often wished she could have been his mother.
Howard and Bernadette had wasted no time in going over to see Debbie the morning after the date to get all the details. After they were all seated, Bernadette immediately asked, "So, how did the date go?"
Debbie took a breath, "It was very enjoyable. We had a good time. I hadn't realized how long it had been since I have been to a movie."
Howard had to ask, "Are you planning to see him again?"
"We talked about it, but both decided we needed to take some time. Of course, we still plan to walk together."
Debbie had decided she didn't need to say that it was she who had suggested they step back. Sam had made no secret he wanted to keep seeing her. She just wasn't ready to make any kind of commitment to a relationship. She had been on her own for such a long time. And maybe she had never fully recovered from what her husband had done to her and Howard.
Howard and Bernadette reacted quite different to what she was saying. Howard found he was relieved. He worried about his mother being hurt again. He more than anyone knew how deeply they had been affected by his father's leaving. It had always been a part of their lives.
Bernadette on the other hand was disappointed. She sensed that Debbie was not telling the whole story. On the other hand, she was gratified that they were still going to see each other.
Wayne and Barb smiled as they saw Mona and Steve getting ready to leave for the meeting. They had been anticipating this for some time.
Barb spoke up, "I must say, you two look mighty snazzy." She smirked, "You clean up well."
Mona smiled, "Thank you for the compliment, I think."
Wayne broke in, "Well, I think you look impressive."
Mona smiled, "Thank you, Wayne." She hesitated, "Well, I guess this is it." She sighed, "Now, don't you two get your hopes too high, it is possible they may not even want to or have time to talk to us tonight. And even if they do, it is entirely possible Miss Waters will not want to see you."
Barb nodded, "We know." She paused, "Thank you for doing this for us."
Steve nodded and said, "Well, we better head out."
Sheldon and Leonard had decided to take two cars, not sure what they might do afterwards. Penny and Amy marveled how handsome their men were in their suits, while Sheldon and Leonard thought how lucky they were to be loved by such beautiful women.
When they arrived at the affair, they were impressed with the surroundings and of course with the attendees.
After exchanging greetings with the Nobel winners, all of whom told Sheldon and Amy how impressed they were with their theory. Amy was gratified to see how well Sheldon handled the situation. He managed not to alienate anyone. Although he did mutter to her when they were alone how he doubted most of them understood Asymmetry.
But the ones that all of them were most looking forward to meeting were the Eddings. When they were introduced to them, they all felt a little ashamed that their first thought was that this was not a beautiful couple. They quickly put that thought behind them.
Mona was surprised when she saw Penny. She had of course seen her picture but realized how even more beautiful she was in person. She was a little disgusted with herself when she found herself wondering how these two had got together and so quickly.
Mona spoke first, "Dr. Hofstadter, Dr. Cooper, it is an honor to meet you. I must let you know how impressed I am with your work." She smiled and turned to Leonard, "I guess I also need to congratulate you on your proof, although I was disappointed you beat us to it."
Leonard smiled, "I had the advantage of having worked with Sheldon and Amy. I was also fortunate in that I found a different path; and please, it's Leonard."
He went on, "I do want to take this opportunity to tell you that I have studied your paper that got you a Nobel nomination. I was very impressed and think it was worthy of the award."
Steve and Mona were surprised and pleased, Steve spoke up, "Thank you for that, Dr…Leonard. We were unfortunate that we were nominated the same year as Dr. Brock and his team."
Mona then turned to Penny, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Penny. I wanted to congratulate you and Leonard on your engagement." She smiled, "I also understand you are appearing in a commercial. I am quite impressed."
Penny was a little surprised. She smiled, "Thank you. I have been very fortunate." Ever since she had heard their last name, it seemed like she had heard it before but couldn't remember where.
They talked for a while but were interrupted by Dr. Siebert asking everyone to take a seat. As they started to move, Mona asked Leonard and Penny if they could talk to them for a moment. She then surprised them by saying she wondered if they could get together for a short time after the meeting; that they had something to discuss with them.
Wondering what this was about, Leonard and Penny agreed.
It had been a long week for Priya. Although she had told herself there was nothing she could do but wait, she still found herself wondering what would happen when Patel returned. She was grateful that she had Sanjay. Each day brought them closer together, each marveling at how they had been blind for so long.
Three days after Patel returned, he called her into his office. When his secretary told her she could go in, she took a deep breath and entered the office. She was surprised to see that Ashid was also there. She had spent some time with him the first week or so when she had taken the position, discussing what he had been working on when he was promoted.
They both were standing and after gesturing for her to take a seat, sat down themselves, Patel behind his desk and Ashid to the right of her.
Patel sighed, "I don't see any need to wait, we all know why we are here. After I returned from England, I arranged for a meeting with the other senior partners. As you would expect, all of them were quite shocked and disappointed over what you had discussed with me."
He paused, "The reactions, however, were quite different. While some talked of immediately dismissing you from the firm, the most prevalent suggestion was to demote you back to your previous position."
"There was one voice that said we should just let it go. He made the point that in punishing you, we would in effect be doing as the Americans say, cutting off our nose to spite our face."
"He talked of all that you had accomplished before and after taking the Junior Partner position, of how much you had contributed to the firm. He said they would be derelict in their duties if they took the chance of losing you. He went on to say that he thought I had no reason to question you in the first place about your reason for terminating your marriage. He agreed you should not have lied, but events seemed to prove that much of what you had said was true. The fact that you were now with the man you cheated with and that Dr. Hofstadter was already engaged supported your statements."
"At first his comments were dismissed, but as the discussions continued, it was becoming apparent they were carrying weight."
Priya just sat there, stunned at what she was hearing.
"In the end, we came to agree with what he had said."
He sighed, "However, we did all agree that we needed to reprimand you. Although it will not be specific as to what it was for, a Notice of a Reprimand will be placed in your file. If nothing else happens in the next six months, it will be removed."
Ashid spoke up, "I asked to be here because I was one of those who initially thought you should be dismissed. I want to say now that I agree with the final decision. I also wanted to say that I hope you are regretful of your actions."
Priya sat there, shocked and stunned. They were going to let it go. She was going to keep her position. She quickly turned to Ashid, "I assure you I am deeply regretful of what I did. I shamed myself."
She looked at both of them, "I am deeply gratified that you are going to let me continue to keep my position. I promise I will do all I can to prove you were right to give me a second chance."
Patel nodded, "We will hold you to that." He stood up, "I think we are done here. He managed a smile, "We all need to get back to work."
Priya returned to her office, still stunned about what had happened. She sighed, she had dodged one bullet but still needed to talk to her family. She supposed she could let it go now that she wasn't losing her job but had come to realize she needed to be honest with everyone.
Then she thought of Leonard and Penny. She probably needed to apologize to them as well and let Leonard know she had cheated on him. Shaking her head, she marveled at how being in love with Sanjay had changed her outlook on life.
After the meeting, Leonard and Penny had gone with Steve and Mona to a small diner nearby. Finding a booth in the back they ordered something to drink and Penny and Leonard looked at them expectantly.
Mona took a sip of her coffee and smiled, "I am sure not where to start."
She took a breath, "Do you remember a girl called Barb that you once did a high school science project with?"
Penny stared, wondering why she would mention that when she suddenly sat up, "Of course, that's where I knew your last name from. Her name was Barb Eddings."
She looked at Steve, "Is she related to you?"
"She is my sister." He hesitated, "She recently came out to California and decided to stay."
Penny smiled, "I would love to see her again." She paused, "Is that what this is all about?"
Mona smiled, "Not exactly. She came out with her boyfriend. They are moving in together."
With Penny and Leonard still wondering where this was headed, Mona took a deep breath, "The thing is, you once talked to her boyfriend on the phone." She paused, "His name is Wayne Walker."
Leonard and Penny just stared at them and then at each other. Leonard finally got out, "You mean Roy Butler's half-brother is your sister's boyfriend, that he is here in California?"
When Mona nodded, Penny broke in, "Was he looking for me? How did he know where I was?"
Mona smiled and saying it would be difficult for them to believe what they were about to hear, told them how Wayne had met Barb in Omaha and how they came out to California on the bike. She told them he had always planned to visit California and Barb came with him. She told them how Barb had seen the commercial and how they had looked on Facebook.
When she finished, Penny and Leonard were left shaking their heads. Finally, Penny got out, "I can't believe it, what are the odds?"
When Mona started to say it would be extremely difficult to calculate, she was surprised to see Penny and Leonard begin to laugh. A little offended, she looked quizzically at them.
Leonard finally managed to say, "We're sorry, but you sounded exactly like Sheldon."
Steve smiled, "I believe it was just a rhetorical question, my Dear."
Mona blushed a little, "I am sure the odds are quite high."
After an awkward silence, Penny continued, "I can see why you thought we might be interested, but is there something more?"
Mona looked at Steve and sighed, "Barb seems to think that you and Wayne should meet. She feels that you would be interested in hearing how things have gone. She believes you were a great help to him."
Penny was a little taken aback. She had never imagined she would ever hear of him again let alone meet him. She looked over at Leonard who she could see was concerned for her.
Finally, she got out, "I admit, I don't know what I think about that." She looked at them, "What do you guys think about this? Are you comfortable with him being with your sister?"
Mona answered, "I admit I was a little shocked when Barb first told me about him, but I could see how much he meant to her. She told me she loved him. I love her and trust her judgement. After meeting and talking with him, I believe he is a good person and I think he loves Barb."
Penny absorbed what she was saying. To her surprise she found herself wanting to meet him. She had sensed when she talked to him that he was nothing like his Father or Roy. She realized she wanted to talk with him again. She smirked to herself that he was a sort of relative.
She also realized she should discuss this with Leonard. She spoke up, "Leonard and I need to discuss this. Could we get back to you?"
Mona smiled, "Of course, I understand." She dug out a business card, "Here is where you can reach us."
As Penny took it, Steve and Mona started to get up. As Penny and Leonard also rose, Steve said, "Thank you for letting us talk to you. We will understand however you decide."
Mona smiled, "It has been wonderful just to meet you. I hope the best for you."
Penny smiled, "Thank you." She looked at Leonard, "We will let you know either way."
Mona nodded and after exchanging goodbyes, headed for the door.
Barb and Wayne were disappointed that Penny hadn't agreed to meet them but were gratified that it was still possible she would. They all agreed that if she said no, they would give up any further attempt to contact her.
Leonard and Penny apparently had both decided to wait until they got home to discuss what had happened. It was only after they had changed clothes and Leonard had returned from going out to get supper, that Penny decided it was time.
Taking a bite of her Pizza, she turned to Leonard, "So, what do you think?"
Caught with a piece of pizza in his mouth, Leonard quickly swallowed and taking a large gulp of water, finally got out, "I know I am probably ducking the question, but it is really up to you. I will support whatever you decide."
Penny glared at him, "Oh, no, you don't. I want to know what you think."
He sighed, "Do you remember when we were discussing whether you should talk to him?"
When Penny nodded, he went on, "Remember how we realized that if you didn't do it, you would always wonder what it would have been like? I think we are there again." He hesitated, "I know we don't know Mona and Steve that well, but I find myself trusting their judgment."
Penny stared at him. It always amazed her how he seemed to say what she needed to hear. She leaned forward and kissed him on the mouth. "Thank you, that is what I needed to hear. I do want to talk to him."
She smirked, "I will call them in the morning. It will be kind of fun to see Barb again too."
She smiled, "But now, let's eat and then I think we should go in the bedroom and you can ravage me. Seeing you with all those intelligent people, seeing how they respect you, how you can talk with them, has really turned me on."
She smirked, "Do you want me to put on the glasses?"
