Chapter Thirty-One
May 3rd, 1912.
New York City Hospital.
The surgeon entered the room and as he wiped his hands. One of the doctors', along with some of the nurses, turned and when he bounced his eyes from each of them, he announced.
"That was quite an adventure he had. I've fixed the jaw but he will have to wear the eyepatch. Thank you for having brought him here after last night's events. They sure caused quite an uproar when they blasted all their cannons. The ground shook when it woke some of the residents and New York will have something to talk about in the papers!"
Drosselmier, who wasn't as mortally injured, stood and approaching the surgeon, asked.
"Will Mr. Dawson be alright? Was the operation a success?"
"Yes. He will be well and fine for that wedding of his." The surgeon replied.
Doctor Drosselmier, along with Ginger, Emma, Heather, as well as William and John all gave a cry of thanks when they heard this wonderful news!
One of the boys, William, stood and approaching the surgeon, asked.
"Doctor? My papa will be alright?"
"Yes, young Dawson. He most certainly will. He'll be in recovery until he wakes up."
The kindly surgeon, the one who was supposed to return that month, arrived and after New York's sea portal heard the commotion between the two pirates, appeared on the sight and it was Drosselmier who reported the men responsible. Most of Kingston's shipmates were put under arrest and some grieved the fact they were part of the police force. Though with any battle, there never was a loss of those who sacrificed their lives to safe their crewmates. Drosselmier, knowing most of Dawson's men, some of whom, yes, died in the battle and one of them was Bart. He'd been slain and he was one of the best mates Drosselmier would remember as he lived.
It was on May 3rd, the year of Our Lord, 1912, when the final battle of the enemy pirates' came to an end. Drosselmier was relieved when he replayed the events that lead to this moment. After the portal men arrested all of Kingston's men, or those alive, the two ships were brought to New York's docks where they would be investigated. But what seemed to amaze Drosselmier was Jack's ship would be tidied, fixed, and polished and with permission… would be used as a national reminder of the Dawson pirates!
"She may even take tours around the port, Drosselmier!" One of the members of New York's city council told him. Despite his injuries, Drosselmier was the only member of the crew able to speak with the member and that been earlier that morning. Jack was found unconscious after he'd killed Kingston but when the sea portal arrived, they sailed them immediately to New York's hospital where the surgeon examined him and told Drosselmier he could fix that broken jaw of his. And like any man who expressed his gratitude, Drosselmier rushed over and telegraphed Jack's home to inform the boys', as well as the servants, that Jack was alright and even Elizabeth was in the healing process.
"By the way," Drosselmier wondered.
"Where is Mrs. Mayfield?"
A gentle tug on his cloak and glancing down, Drosselmier met John Dawson's eyes as he asked.
"Where's mama?"
One of the nurses stepped out of a side room and hearing this, she answered.
"Mrs. Mayfield is now awakening, Drosselmier. Would you like to speak with her? You can bring the boy with you."
"Thank you, kindly. I will." Drosselmier replied.
Glancing back at John, who held eyes of plea, Drosselmier held his hand out as he asked.
"Ready to see your mama?"
"Yes." He answered and the young boy placed his hand in his. Making their way into the room, another voice called.
"Wait! Can I come, too?"
When Drosselmier met William's eyes, the older brother seemed to be as excited and longing to see Mrs. Mayfield as the young was and Drosselmier answered.
"But of course you can, William! Come!"
And with both boys' beside him, Drosselmier made his way into the patient's room and when they entered, Drosselmier heard John exclaim.
"Mama!"
His eyes filled with tears when the woman on the bed, opened her arms out, and even though she'd been beaten and injured, extended her heart to her son as she answered.
"Yes, John! Mama's here!"
Then the little boy bounced over and crawling on the bed, being careful, engulfed himself in his mother's arms and when Drosselmier let William free, he heard both of the boys' crying. It touched him to see this but he was thankful. Offering up a prayer of thanks, he silently waited to tell Mrs. Mayfield the news about Mr. Dawson.
