"A soulmate, but those are only tales." Loki looked troubled. "If the way to release me from this collar is to find my soulmate, how will I ever find them?" Loki looked at Harry with wide eyes. "And how would we convince them to release me?"
Now
"It is the deafening lack of noise that is noise, the loudest of noises one could hear, as they're no other competing sounds to disperse what is perceived as silence. True silence, it is said, is golden."
Years ago, when Harry first learned about his title, he couldn't comprehend what he was feeling. It was then, that he started reading poetry. He read a lot and thought that he had understood what they were saying, but he was wrong. It wasn't until this moment that he fully understood what it meant. That deafening lack of noise rang through the library with echoes of Loki's desperate question.
What indeed, what should or could they do if they found Loki's soulmate. It wasn't even sure if they could find them, but the implications of not knowing what to do it was hard enough already. Should they beg? Not tell the truth? Imprison them until they fell in love with Loki? Alright, the last one went a bit too far.
"Well, I'm doomed."
"I beg your pardon?" Harry blinked his eyes.
Loki scoffed. "I thought that you were smarter. Everyone knows who I am and what I have done and even if they don't know me, someone will tell them." He sighed, "Nothing will help. It's the best if I will just get used to the situation. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to find a job that I can do to satisfy you." With that, Loki stood up and left the library.
"Loki wait!" Harry yelled. "don't… go. Never mind." Harry went with his hand through his hair. Of course, this happened. If there was anything that he had learned, it is that Loki was greatly pessimistic even more so than himself. "Guess that I have to find his soulmate then." He muttered to himself. How hard can it be? There must be something that he could do, but first.
"Loki, I command you to come back." He didn't want to do it, but he didn't have another choice.
Slowly Loki appeared back in the library, but the collar was shining brightly and his muscles were tense. Harry didn't dare to look in his eyes, knowing that he would find them full of loathing.
Taking a deep breath, Harry started, "I know that you feel as if there is no hope anymore, but I will continue searching. As for what you just said. You will take care of your children. They are still in the Hospital Wing, you will make sure that they will heal and you are responsible for them. Do you understand?"
Loki clenched his jaw. "Perfectly clear, sir." He spat out. "Anything else, sir?"
"No, there's nothing else. You may go."
Loki stormed out of the library, throwing the door shut behind him.
Harry closed his eyes, he really didn't want to do it. "Let's see if there's anything I can do. Short of changing the entire world so that everyone can find their soulmate. Perhaps one of those fancy soulmate finding 'tropes'. Perhaps for both of them to see only in black and white until they find each other or a clock that ticks down until they meet." Harry mused out loud. "A mark may be the simplest form, but then I can better use it on the whole world if it is possible."
Harry shook his head, he had been reading too much fiction lately. There was no way that he could actually do that. He had to go back to research. He shut down the wards in the library, that way, no one could disturb him. He had a lot of research to do.
Loki was seething with rage. How dared he? Commanding him! He may be officially his slave, but he refused to just be commanded, no matter how painful it was. He hissed when the collar gave him a shock. Stupid thing.
Making his way to the Hospital Wing, Loki tried to calm down for the sake of his children, but it was difficult. He had thought that he wouldn't be betrayed anymore. Wait, betrayed? Slowly halting his footsteps Loki realized that he had started to trust Harry. When did that happen? Slowly going through his memories he was startled to realise that he did trust Harry, or had. Harry had betrayed his trust. He couldn't trust him anymore…
Hours turned into days, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Loki took care of his slowly recovering children while wondering why he never heard or saw anything anymore from Harry.
The House Elves were getting desperate, they weren't able to get to their master for a few months now. They knew that he couldn't really die anymore, but that didn't mean that they weren't worried about his health.
Meanwhile, in the library, a pitiful sight could be seen. Hands that were once full of callouses because of holding a broomstick were skeletal, ribs that could be seen through robes and a face so skeletal that it was a miracle that the skin hadn't broken yet. It was clear; Harry was slowly getting weaker and weaker, but he had to continue. He had to find a way to find Loki's soulmate. He was almost there, he could feel it, he just had to work a little bit more. He could do it, he could…
"Master Loki!"
Loki looked up, "What is wrong?"
"The Master collapsed and we can't feel him anymore! Please go to him to help him!" The elf begged Loki.
Loki frowned. How did Harry collapse? "Take me to him," Loki ordered.
The House Elves led Loki to the library.
Loki was confused. "Why is he in the library if I may ask? All the wards are down, I'm not sure if I can get through them."
One of the elves wrung their hands, "He's been researching for months and he didn't want anyone to get it."
Loki turned back to the doors with concern written on his face. "Then it is time to get him out."
