The sun blared in through the windows as it did every day. Blinding light trailed over our guilty forms. Draco and I were curled up in his single bed, one of his curtains carelessly still open and ringed by senior boys drooling passively in their sleep. I stiffened, suddenly aware of my surroundings. The crime of being caught in the men's quarters would be severe if I didn't leave immediately. Snape would spare no compulsion in his punishment.
I shoved Draco's arm off of my being and wobbled to a standing position, slowly collecting my clothing from the floor. It was scattered evidently around the bed, like clues to a murder. My skin prickled with goosebumps as the very real possibility that any one of the nasty Slytherin boys sleeping in the room might see me in my underwear.
Before I could pull on my pants I was locked into a cocoon of black sheets. Draco had leapt from his bed, ripped his sheets off and covered me up to my neck. "Are you insane? Do you know what they'll do if they see you naked?" he seethed at me in a barely audible tone, his fingers twisted into a tight knot in the bedding at the front of my body. I found it hard to take him seriously with his angry glare and messy hair.
"What was I supposed to do? Run for et?" I whispered back. A body stirred in the bed next to us and we both gasped as Goyle pulled his curtains across completely and stared with eyes wide as saucers. Draco shook his head slowly in a deeply warning manner but it was too late.
"Draco? Is that..." his eyes trained on me wrapped up in Draco's bed sheets and within seconds Goyle was laughing hysterically, sitting all the way up, "Madeleine's naked!"
He mispronounced my name brutally and I felt myself cowering into Draco as all of the boys began stirring and peering out of their curtains eagerly. There was an immediate ruckus of snorting and hollering. The fist that was twisted in the sheets before me dragged me towards the exit rapidly, but not before Crabbe could stick out his leg at an angle and trip me. I slipped to the ground and Draco accidentally pulled the sheet away from me.
I scrambled to my feet as they all hungrily roved over my body, standing there in my matching pink bra and underwear. "Ta gueule!" I cursed in French, now not even bothering to rush as I grabbed my sweater and pants from the floor and turned to leave in a huff.
"Yo Draco tell us what she said!" They laughed mercilessly behind me as I pelted down the steps in a panic, ripping my sweater over my head.
"Madeleine, wait," Draco pulled my arm before I could make it to the common room, "Put your fucking pants on. Someone could be in the common room."
I turned around panting, my skin crawling from the humiliation. He looked at me like I was acting crazy as I ripped on my jeans on the staircase.
Draco whined in frustration, "Just great, now they'll all have that image in their heads the next time they-"
"Stop!" I blurted, pushing him backwards, "Don't say et. I don' want to know."
His nose pulled back at the corners as it always did when he sneered cruelly. He narrowed his eyes at me, still just in his boxers in the thin stairwell, "I bet you enjoyed that huh? Like being the center of attention?"
I gaped at him and the urge to slap him danced in my fingers, "Don' be an asshole." I whispered the words harshly as I finished buttoning my pants up, "You told dem what et was like to fuck me already, didn't you?"
His face faltered and he stared down at the stone stair copings with silent rage. I crossed my arms and waited as he suddenly acted like I was invisible. I shoved him after a solid minute had passed and he stumbled up two steps.
"Okay, okay!" He shouted, then had to flatten himself against the wall to allow Blaise to pass who was moving so smoothly he almost looked like he was floating down.
He smirked sideways at Draco and then his brown eyes rested on me briefly. "Madeleine," he smiled at me mockingly before he'd completely passed me. I felt my face flush with heat.
Draco smacked the wall above my head, clearly unable to contain his rage, "I told them. But I was drunk, and it was a mistake. Are you satisfied? That's no reason to give them a fucking visual." He glared down at me.
"Dat was a mistake too," I pointed up the stairs and his mouth dropped open in offense. I realized he had likely misunderstood that I was referring to my strategy for exiting the room without being seen, not the romantic night before.
I turned and galloped down the stairs anyways, too angry to clarify anything to him.
I didn't see him for all of Sunday after we'd bickered, and by the time Monday had come I was feeling sad about the way we'd left each other.
In the morning I saw him in the common room and tried to approach him, only for him to take off at breakneck speed towards Potions at a pace that I couldn't dream of maintaining. My heart was aching to make up with him, worried he'd incorrectly assumed that I'd meant it was a mistake to tell him I loved him.
I held my breath as I entered the Potions classroom hoping that he would act civil and just let me sit with him. I was immediately struck with defeat when I noticed he'd sat in the very center of a row of boys. His eyes met mine for a split second before he looked away at his parchment. I fought not to cry as I sat next to a bunch of strange Hufflepuffs.
Again, he did the same thing later in Charms class, wedging himself deep amongst his friends and avoiding looking at me. The only upside to the day was Cedric Diggory showing me kindness as I struggled with a charm, only for the interaction to quickly blend into something less than ideal.
"Um, hey, are you doing alright?" He'd asked somewhat shyly as I failed to perform the charm in frustration. He had startled me by brooding on the other side of the bench before me, silently, watching. I looked up at him, taking in his yellow robes and sharply concentrated gaze. "Sorry, I didn't mean to...I don't know, distract you," he said in a silky voice, smirking slightly.
I had never spoken with him in person, just saw him around the school and heard of him. He was the sporty hunk several girls absolutely mourned over.
I sighed and rolled my neck, "I just don' know what I'm doing wrong." I waved my wand in the shape of the infinity symbol again to show him what I'd been doing. "Apeiros!" I called, casting towards the wine bottle I'd brought to try and attribute infinite motion to.
He laughed and reached across the desk, enclosing my hand in his to guide me in the proper motion, "I know, it seems like it should be more simple than this. This spell confused me as well at first, just make sure you keep your wand tip level as you draw the symbol." His hand was large and warm on my skin and the fresh, light scent of his clothing wafted between us.
I knew it was silly but my cheeks flushed in his presence, aware he was a flirt and certainly did not hold back on getting around. He'd already slept his way through half of the school.
"Ah," was all I said in confirmation as he started the loop over again and again, his fingers running down my hand gently.
"Interesting choice, the uh, wine bottle. You a big party girl?" He quirked his eyebrow at me, and the smile on his face most certainly suggested flirting. He had paused the motion of our hands, simply holding mine between us. His eyes flitted upwards for a split second at the upper rows in the pier.
I carefully slipped my hand out of his and swallowed nervously, "No, I mean, maybe. Sometimes." I easily could have been pegged as a party girl but he didn't need to know that. I was now slightly sweaty, uncertain of how to shut down the conversation.
"I've heard about you Madeleine. Pretty slick on the pitch," his eyes wandered over my face as he watched me bite my lip awkwardly and sink back further into my chair, "It's always hot when a girl can play sports, especially one good enough to get scouted." He was the Captain of the Hufflepuff team, of course he would have heard about me. He probably knew every team's roster.
I shrugged, placing my wand on the table, realizing he wasn't about to leave. I was too afraid to glance in Draco's direction since he was sitting several rows higher than myself and it would be painfully obvious. "You seem pretty talented yourself. Wasn't et de Falmouth Falcons dat scouted you?" I asked.
He nodded with a grin. "One of them. I had my pick, babe. Say," he leaned close to my face, both of his elbows on the desk, "If you want to come to a Hufflepuff party this Thursday, I'll show you how fun it can be to be a party girl, huh." I barely had a moment to register what he meant before a green apple smashed into his head from above.
It was no mystery who'd thrown it given his reputation for carrying the fruits around everywhere. I followed Cedric's appalled gaze to where Draco was now standing and leaning over his desk, "How's that for infinite motion, Diggory?" He laughed obnoxiously with his friends.
Cedric gave him a curt, displeased smile, "Alright Malfoy, very funny." I wondered momentarily if he didn't know about my relationship with Draco as he flicked bits of destroyed apple from his hair. He leaned back towards me in a hushed voice, "The invitation still stands, gorgeous. Hope to see you there." He slapped the table in front of me causing me to jump before he moved down the line of casting students, leaving a trail of apple bits.
I had just picked up my wand again to cast at the wine bottle when another paper crane flew down and landed on the bottle, folding it's wings gracefully. The Hufflepuff girl next to me watched with burning curiosity. I rolled my eyes and unfurled it, noting that it only had two words: come here.
I spun in my chair to peer up at Draco who was looking down at me unblinkingly with hooded eyes, his friends snickering at his sides. There would be no where for me to sit if I moved up there so I just sent him a puzzled look. Flitwick was across the room, working with Cedric to help another student halt a dangerously spinning potion bottle that she clearly could not stop. It would only be a matter of time before it smashed and the pieces would continue to swirl dangerously.
He mouthed the two words slowly while maintaining his threatening gaze. I grabbed my bag and had to force several students down the line to lean forward uncomfortably so I could pass. Once I'd reached the Slytherin boys I stood there stupidly on the other side of Blaise who just kept staring straight ahead as though I wasn't trying to get by.
"Zabini, move your fucking ass," Draco whispered heatedly. Blaise finally pulled forward, and I had to squeeze with all of my might to get around Crabbe's round body to reach Draco. He didn't hesitate to rip me down into his lap.
I turned my head to look at him, aware that we were likely going to get spotted and have house points deducted for sitting together inappropriately. "If you think you're going to that party then you have a fucking death wish," he whispered savagely. His arm around my waist was painfully tight and my ribs suffered trying to expand to a normal volume. The hard lump of the moonstone below his school clothing dug into my back.
I suddenly felt irritated that he was still trying to control me after everything we had been through. "You cannot tell me whether or not I can go, Draco," I argued back in a low voice.
His eyebrows pushed together furiously, "Oh rest assured, I will prevent you if I feel it is necessary. There's a limit to my tolerance." His sweet minty breath lingered between our faces. I held my eyes on his piercing blue ones as I thought about how to calm him down. He was already in a bad mood from the miscommunication on Sunday morning.
"Do you really think I would sleep wit' 'im if I went?" I retorted in disbelief of the conversation.
His eyes grew wide and bitter, his nose nearly touching mine as I was being forced to lean back into his chest, "I don't know, Madeleine, I'm not a Seer - maybe you can help me out." I shifted in his lap to put some space between our faces but he yanked my waist painfully and I slid suggestively farther between his legs. I avoided making eye contact with Goyle who was on Draco's left and staring over at the awkward public affection. I made an effort to adjust my skirt from where it had hiked up.
My eyes flitted to the ceiling sarcastically, "You 'ave trust issues, you know dat? Obviously -"
I was cut off by Flitwick's shrill exclamation as he noticed that I was sitting on Draco's lap, "Excuse me, but this is not tolerable behavior young lady. Back to your own seat, now!" He pointed at the empty space that I'd left in my wake in the first row, where the wine bottle still sat abandoned. I was forced to go back down with everyone's eyes on me as the professor stood with his arms crossed, waiting for me to return.
