Author's notes:

Hello! I'm not dead, and this fic is not dead either. It's been a while since I last posted an update. Things got a little busy for me to write, but worry not, I won't be abandoning this fic anytime soon. Just finding some time to write and the motivation to, is what's keeping me from updating.

So yeah, updates might be slow this year. But I'll try not to make it a 4-month gap in between each chapters like this one.

Also, it took me a while to write this chapter and supposedly the content originally was going to be much longer, but I realized that I'd rather split it into two parts. So, the second half is on its way and being written, hopefully I'll post it sooner too.

That's all for the author's notes and here is the chapter, enjoy!

Royal Investigative Report #0816XX

The ongoing investigation of the newly discovered locale continues. As we the Royal Scriveners, have come to research the area where the black blight presumedly rooted itself initially. Before it began to spread its infection throughout the entire region of the Whistill forest.

We have come to officially dubbed the new locale as 'The Hollow'.

Named due to the locale's hidden location being inside a massive hollow cavern. Of which is within parts of the northwestern mountains ranges bordering Whistill forest and the Darj snowfields.

We now consider 'The Hollow' as one of the fabled and rarely recorded hidden ecosystems, in our continent that the guild has theorize before. Prime locations that are connected by the underground tunnels and monster dens from the days of old. And places where monsters could thrive in the absence of humans. Having near zero contact with civilizations and the rest of the outside world, pass its natural borders.

Worth noting, the cavern miraculously possess all the needed components to sustain life and more. Days of research and investigation reveal that it is a place rich with energy, based on the studies of the flora present and how nutrient rich the water content was, compared to the rivers and other bodies of water found outside The Hollow in Whistill forest.

We infer the locale's current bio-energy rich environment is due to the numerous monsters that have lived in The Hollow and have died there, with their decomposing bodies releasing large amount of energy back to the locale's ecosystem.

This hypothesis is based after one investigation team discovered several boneyards filled with remains of multiple monster types of all kinds. With the additional discovery of dragon veins present in the areas found. A rare phenomenon that is still lacking in explanation but is considered as one of the natural manifestations of the high concentration of energy present in any given locale.

We believe the presence of the dragon veins aides in decomposing the bodies of deceased monsters. With 'The Hollow' benefiting from it having an efficient system to breakdown dead matter and obtain the bioenergy and nutrients from monsters to further enrich its environment.

We also hypothesize that the rivers present in The Hollow carries some of the rich nutrients out of the hidden locale. The nutrients being distributed through the system of interconnected rivers and streams present in the Whistill region, including those inside monster dens, and thus nourishing the areas due to the high-quality water available.

We have deemed the Hollow's locale as unique and highly coveted by monsters of all types, theorizing that most monsters that escape the guild's notice venture to the hidden locale due to its promising state of life. Which is why we are led to believe it was the same reason why, hypothetically, the Black Calamity might have invaded it years before.

Evidence of its presence was found through the many littered black thorns scattered throughout the entire locale, with many more being discovered as our investigation continues. Unfortunately, we could not find any traces of the Black Calamity's remains or the body itself.

Itself still eluding are grasp, despite our search in the Hollow.

Sadly enough, nor are the remains or anything similar of the late hunter A4, who faced the Black Calamity years ago at the cost of her own life. Except for her Carving knife, which was found by the initial team who ventured first in the Hollow valley.

(We can only presume that both the Black Calamity and A4's final resting place is elsewhere, but close. We will not stop in our search for either of the two and we wish to request an extension for our stay in YoRHa to do so.)

In relation to the Black blight epidemic the entire region is currently facing, we could conclude that the Hollow's unique environment and location is the likely reason to why the blight was able to root and nurture itself to a great degree, even with the absences or suppose death of the Black Calamity, its originator.

We infer that the black blight's presence remained unnoticed for a prolonged period time underground as Whistill forest was slowly infected, because of its lingering influence spreading through the underground river systems connected to the hidden locale and to the outside world. Before the effects made themselves known once it reach the surface and plaguing several plant life and monsters.

We have issued a warning to YoRHa's guild beforehand of caution against any stray infected monsters that may have fled Whistill forest. But now we must implore for the main guild in Gildegaran to have the same vigilance and caution that the black blight might have spread further or been carried over by the rivers of Whistill forest and out to the neighboring regions.

(We will await the Guild's response to this information and for further orders concerning it.)

On another matter, fortunately we have good news to report regarding the decline of the black blight's presence in the Whistill forest and its region's monster dens.

After the successful destruction of the tainted roots found by the initial team, for the past few days the black blights presences has slowly rescinded from the Hollow's area to a significant degree. With its initial scope encompassing nearly half of the valley, now reduced to small pockets of infected trees housing the persistent blight.

While in the areas outside of the locale within Whistill forest, including the monster dens found throughout our operations, the black blight's decline is seen to a greater degree. With previous locations marked with infection of the black blight, now absent of it. And as of our current data and reports, are now free of the black blight's presence, it seemingly vanishing without a trace.

Most notable is the large area in the northern area of Whistill forest, which was one of the biggest areas recorded to be infected, is now recently dubbed clean of the black blight. All the trees, plant life, and other endemic life seemingly healed and appeared to be even glowing at times from being cured.

We are unsure if there was a domino effect that occurred from the initial destruction of the tainted roots, with its collapse led to weakening the black blight's influence throughout the entire forest and the ecosystem naturally heal itself.

Though, the rate of recovery of the forest is abnormal.

And frankly miraculous, with several of our own researchers in the Royal Scriveners sharing the same opinion. Based on old records, normally it would take weeks and even months before the black blight is purged completely, gone from anything and any area it's found in.

Yet, for the case of YoRHa and Whistill forest, it only took a few days for the blight to disappear even when factoring in the large scope the black blight had a hold on area. As if everything was purged of the blight overnight or something similar of sort occurred.

This is a cause for another type of investigation, to discover if something like of an unknown catalyst is present in Whistill forest that led to its rapid recovery from the black blight. And if possible, study for any further application to be used outside the region against future black blight threats and outbreaks.

Regardless of the mysterious and unknown phenomenon, the forest itself continues to heal and benefit from it. With the land coming to peace and monster behavior now stabilizing. A few species have been reported beginning to migrate and return to their previous territories formerly affected by the blight, as YoRHa's Guild continues to monitor the changes and any other signs similar.

With the way things are going, once the investigation of the black blight ends, the village of YoRHa and Whistill forest would make a full recovery, expected in a few weeks.

We will continue to provide support and aide to the villages' endeavors until the time for our departure. And report our complete and compiled findings of our entire stay in YoRHa to the guild, once we return back in Gildegaran.

End of report.

"…And done." Popola said, finished in writing her daily report to the guild. Giving a slight yawn and stretching her back to relieve some kinks from sitting for quite some time.

She was currently at her desk in the room YoRHa's Guild provided to her and her sister, for their stay in the village. It was early in the morning and the ever so diligent co-captain of the Royal Paleontology Scriveners decided to use some time to finishing writing a few documents they'll be sending to the guild soon, which her report is included and scheduled to be sent by today.

Just as Popola was about to get up from her desk, the door of their room opens and enters Devola holding an opened letter in her hands. She noticed her twin sister had a slight annoyed expression on her face.

"Something wrong?"

Devola expression only turned more pensive from her inquiry. "It's from the guild, with new orders."

"Oh? What are they?" Popola asked. Finding it also a coincidence that the guild has sent a letter just as she was writing hers.

"They're pulling us out."

"What?!" That was a surprise and not what Popola has expected to hear from the guild. A thought shared by Devola who nods knowingly.

"Specifically, the guild master is ordering us to return to Gildegaran, immediately."

"Why is the guild master ordering us to return? We're not done yet with our work here in YoRHa, even with the considerable progress we're making." Popola knows it isn't like the guild master to request for them to return from an unfinished investigation. Especially when it concerns life-threatening and disaster related cases, like the black blight epidemic in YoRHa.

Sadly, Devola could only give a vague explanation based on the letter she has. "All the letter says is that its urgent. And a top priority."

"No explanation?"

"Only that the guild master will be the one to explain everything to us and that he didn't want to risk any confidential data to be leaked." Devola explains with a serious look and simple shrug of her shoulders.

"Honestly, I bet it might be related to the black blight or something worst… I mean we didn't find the body of the Black Calamity and we know now that the black blight might have spread through the river systems pass Whistill forest."

"True… possibly, the guild master wants us to investigate another matter discreetly and not cause any unnecessary panic." Popola couldn't help but agree with Devola's statement. It was a cause for concern that they couldn't find the Black Calamity or A4 for the matter, despite finding evidence of their presence in the Hollow.

"Still, I can't help but want to stay a bit longer and finish some of our unfinished business here… Though, I would admit it's more because of some personal reasons." Popola said, with one reason being to help find A4. While another is…

"Ah, right. It's that time of the year again." Devola spoke, remembering. "I did see some people putting out decorations outside in the streets."

"Shame we can't join the festivities… But work first and play later." Popola mused while standing up and beginning to pile up her documents. "Still, do you think the others will be alright with our abrupt departure? I know a few certain individuals who might want our second opinions and insights."

Devola answered with a lazy wave. "They can handle themselves… if anything, the guild is confident of YoRHa finishing the Black blight operation on their own without us. Especially with the way things have been going lately."

"Though they might be taking break for the week because of what's happening." Devola adds bitterly, which Popola instantly picks up and gave her twin sister a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

"Oh, don't be jealous because we have to work while they celebrate. I think they deserve it with how the past month has treated YoRHa and Whistill forest. I know that Zinnia said they'll remain vigilant of the black blight, but it doesn't mean they can't have some fun and boost the morale of the village. Now that some peace has returned to the land."

"I know, I know… hopefully everyone will be able to rest and rewind a bit." Devola said with a bit of optimism.

"Yeah, or no new incidents." Popola adds, wishing the same as her sister and hopes the village could have no complications whatsoever, while they were gone too. "Hopefully, their celebration would be a welcomed distraction from the stress of work."

"I can imagine some people needing a distraction from somethings…" Devola spoke cryptically.

Popola raised an eyebrow, curious to her sister's musings.

The blade surface was smooth and polished. Thoroughly cleaned, its current appearance reflecting its return to its former state from its previous rusted like condition.

Its design and shape were now far more recognizable, without the dirt and impurities covering it before.

A2 continued to stare at A4's hunting knife, meticulously imprinting every detail it has. Doing so as if the blade would reveal the answers she seeks, or any underlying truth left by its late owner.

Not that she would get anything from it, really.

She's been doing the same thing, staring at the same lifeless object for days. Sometimes bordering to even becoming an unhealthy daily routine, drawing concerns from her love ones whenever they spot her with the old carving knife.

But they didn't call out A2 of it and knew the reason to why she was behaving the way she is. They all understood that she couldn't help but be fixated at the one item they were able to find of A4 in their last investigation from the caverns below. The only item that could probably be left of the hunter.

With anything else like her armor, her weapon …or whatever is left of her, gone. Lost to time.

A2 couldn't help but feel some frustration from their lack findings or clues. Sure, initially finding the Carving knife spurred some grief and sorrow to rise up and be let out. That moment of finding the state of the tool and how it was buried in the ground, meant that no one was able to retrieve it for a long time.

She knew then, any likelihood of A4 being alive was dashed.

A2 was even surprised from how much hope she still had of A4 still being alive or that she survived her ordeal with the Black Calamity. She knew 2B shared the same feelings and sadly felt them crushed too, at their discovery. They both couldn't help crying their eyes out from putting to rest to one of their many questions regarding A4's fate.

At least they could stop worrying of the what ifs, and finally try to move on and close this chapter of their life. Then focus on the rest of the many more unanswered questions left to be solved and other important matters concerning their late mentor, like the black blight.

Yet unfortunately, the past days searching and investigating with the guild has left them with more questions and dead ends, than answers or clues of finding the rest of A4 or the Black Calamity for the matter.

A2 thought finding the Carving knife would have led to a new trail of clues or something that would help explain why her mentor and friend was in a recently discovered hidden locale. She'd ask herself 'Did A4 find herself there because of the Black Calamity taking their battle to the Hollow? Or for some other agenda based on what Commander White told before?'

Remembering that A4 and Commander White were heading somewhere else before encountering the Black Calamity, A2 wonders if they were actually heading to the Hollow for something else.

Or were they looking for the Black Calamity and A4 just found herself pursuing it to the Hollow instead? Maybe she was—

"—Ughh… I'm getting nowhere." A2 groaned, sheathing the Carving knife back to its scabbard.

Investigative thinking wasn't her strong suit, 2B was better at it than she was. Heck, she knows these type of things are 9S's forte and he was better than both of them in figuring things out. Case in point, he figure out his rider heritage and was able to become one, while solving bits and pieces of his past.

"…A2?"

Speak of the devil. Or Deviljho in this case.

"Sup."

A2 finds herself caught red handed by 9S again, brooding with the A4's carving knife. If she kept count the number times her family caught her in the similar act, 2B and 9S would be tied at this point, the pods coming a close second and with Zinnia still in the lead by catching her in two separate occasions on the same day.

And predictably his expression, like the rest of the others would upon seeing her, morphs to a pensive and worrying one. Added with a guilty look, no doubt still feeling bad that he and Rogue couldn't find anything else on A4, despite their best efforts in the past days.

Heck, A2 knows Rogue felt so ashamed for the first time he failed in finding something, the brute wouldn't look at her and kept turning away face filled with guilt. Until some coercion with YoRHa jerky were made for her to convince him he wasn't at fault, that both he and 9S did their best and there would be more opportunities later on.

A2 thought their guilt was unnecessary too. She and 2B wouldn't have made this far in finding A4 without the both of them, plus they had their own other tasks to focus on that would help in the long run. Like purging the black blight these past few days.

Speaking of which… A2 watches 9S approaching the couch and then promptly sitting beside her. She gave him a quick flick in the forehead once he sat down, to stop the sad looks he was giving and getting rid the guilt in his mind.

"Hey!" He hissed indignantly, rubbing his forehead in response, annoyed expression now sporting on his face.

"You look like shit." A2 pointed out, seeing the visibly eyebags he had. "Late night?"

"Uh… Yeah. Pretty late. We didn't want to get caught curing the last of the trees in the northern area, so we had to wait until midnight." 9S replied with a tired shrug, before timidly looking at A2 asking. "Zinnia didn't wake up or ask where I was, did she?"

"No, you're safe… She slept like a log last night, probably after filing a lot of documents for the guild."

"That's good to know." 9S sighed in relief before leaning back and sinking to the couch.

A2 knew he stayed up much later than usual with Rogue, discreetly curing the last of the infected areas left in Whistill forest. She can't help asking how they're both doing out of concern. "You sure you don't need more sleep? How is Rogue by the way?"

"We're both fine... really. And Rogue's doing okay. Probably feeling as tired as I am, with what a long weeks it has been..." He lets out a tired yawn, eyes struggling to stay open.

A2 nods in agreement, not surprise at his tired state. She knew they've been purging the black blight for the past weeks, avoiding the watchful eyes of the guild. Revisiting the places where the black blight was, and some other areas found not listed by the guild to cure them. Then by morning, hunters would report of the miraculous recovery, with only the blighted lesser monsters left to be handled by YoRHa and the few uninfected monsters causing trouble when moving back to their cured old locales.

"How about you guys? You and 2B haven't had any trouble with some of the monsters?" 9S asked, curious to her own work and troubles.

"Not much or having any problems. So, no need to call any rider reinforcements. You can rest easy for a bit." A2 said, teasingly patting 9S's head before he pushed it off with a slight chuckle.

A2 knows it was a constant grind these past days with 2B too, slaying all the mid-tier monsters causing a ruckus from the changes in the forest. With the occasional support by 9S and Rogue when they're not too tired from their late-night excursions. Fortunately, last night would be their last, knowing from the guild reports that The Hollow was the only place left with the Black Blight.

"I guess you and Rogue can take a break for a bit. Seeing you guys are practically done purging the blight from the forest."

A2 could see 9S ponder for a bit before replying.

"Yeah, I guess… But that leaves the Hollow left, doesn't it."

True. A2 couldn't help but see the irony that only place left, was the first place 9S healed the blight officially. They could have healed all the black blight when they were there first, but the scope of the locale was to vast to finish in one day and they had to avoid suspicion, plus provide proof that the black blight was there in the first place.

It was too bad they couldn't sneak back in easily, because of the Royal Scriveners constant watch. They even have workers doing a night shift, so 9S and Rogue couldn't come in at night to heal the rest of the valley.

A2 recalls that 9S decided to risk healing the valley last and probably figure out how he'll be doing it by himself without Rogue, since no one wanted some researchers spotting young Deviljho tracks in the area, arousing suspicion. At least they could bear the thought that the Hollow valley is actually healing itself too, ever slowly since 9S took care of the tainted roots.

And they could also enjoy the peace they made, no matter how brief it is. Maybe catching up some sleep, which A2 could tell 9S really needed since he was nearly dozing off before waking up abruptly.

"So, why up so early today?" She couldn't help but be curious, since A2 knows 9S would always have a reason to wake up early do something. She could guess he might be going to meet and catch up with 2B at the guild, seeing that her sister left much earlier to meet up with 6O for something.

"Thought you'd still be asleep after having a long night magically curing corrupted trees." A2 teased, while 9S gives her an unamused look in reply.

"It's not magic. It's more like… my kinship stone spurs the latent bio-energy not corrupted by the black blight from the infected object, to push out the corruptive essence and—"

"—So magic? Plus, you really think I have the mindset to listen to your technical babble?" A2 cuts in, she could feel a tick appearing on her forehead if 9S continues to give theoretical explanations to his magic stone.

9S simply shrugs. "You asked. And it's not magic."

"Whatever you say. You still didn't answer my first question."

"Oh!" 9S sat up remembering something, before enthusiastically saying. "32S and Pops is back! I asked if we could hangout today and he said we could but only early in the morning, since he'll be busy later today."

"I see. Didn't realize they were already back in the village…"

'It made sense for them to return for the festivities we're going to have' A2 thought to herself. And she also knows that everyone in the village was going to be busy for the rest of the week because of it, hence 9S waking up early to meet his friend.

"It's nice that we could meet up and hangout, while having a break from hunting related matters and take some mind off of other things." 9S said, a notion A2 could agree on.

"True. Maybe taking a break would be a nice change of pace." She said, looking back at the carving knife in her hands.

A2 thought that maybe she might need to focus on something else besides matters related to A4, to take a needed break to settle her thoughts if possible. She knows the late hunter would have done the same if she was in a slump. Probably would have told her to do something fun or be with her friends than being alone by herself.

She could join with 2B and 6O later and see what she could do with them for the time being. Or maybe help out Zinnia too, with whatever she needs in today's preparations. She could also just fool around a bit and ask 9S if she can borrow Rogue, then go take him for a run and ride around Whistill forest if she isn't too busy with what YoRHa was planning to do for the week.

With a lot of things to consider, A2 decides she'll just keep an open mind on what she'll do later, before turning back to 9S. "Well, I won't keep 32S waiting for you, so you better go before something comes up and you guys can't meet. I'm not surprise if he was busy today, especially with what's going around the village."

"Hmm. What do you mean?" 9S raised an eyebrow from what she said.

"Huh? What do you mean 'What do I mean?'" A2 caught herself surprise from his sudden inquiry. "9S… Tell me you didn't forget what tomorrow is, right? Or why there are decorations and banners being set up yesterday?"

"Forget what? And what do you mean decorations? I didn't notice anything yesterday… but I was gone for the entire day too helping Whistill on something. Plus my late night with Rogue—"

A2 watched 9S brought a hand to his chin, deep in thought and trying to figure out what she meant. It really was a no brainer for him to remember, since she knows he was always the most excited when that time of the year arrives for YoRHa.

"You, really forgot?"

He simply gave a helpless shrug in reply. "You tell me."

Huh. A2 could figure that 9S being busy was the probable reason to why he forgot YoRHa's annual event. Then again, everyone was busy with the black blight operation, so A2 couldn't blame him if it escaped his mind.

She almost forgot it too, if it weren't for 2B diligently reminding her about it, and why hunting activity was going to slow down with the Guild's attention turning towards the defense and guarding of the village. She might as well tell him now than him figuring out too late later.

And an interesting thought came into mind… something related to him and her sister in fact, and what they could together.

With an amused smirk A2 started "Well before you begin making any plans for the week, I'd like you to remind that you forgot our village's annual event, which starts tomorrow."

"Wait, which event? What's tomorrow?" 9S asked in confusion.

A2 amusingly shakes her head. "9S. Tomorrow is—"

"It's YoRHa's Founding Festival!" 2B heard 6O cheer happily beside her.

Her friend was also waving and gesturing excitedly to the many decoration and stalls being set up by the equally excited villagers around them. They were right in front of the guild, the place they agreed to meet up at, finding themselves watching a large wooden arena type stage being built at the center of the square.

The structure being made was for the future events and shows part of the celebration for their village, and with Zinnia right on top of the platform facilitating all the ongoing and busybody work being done currently.

2B could also see her wyverian guardian sporting the same expression and enthusiasm as 6O's. Visibly dictating her orders to the hunters and volunteers helping out for their weeklong event in a merry manner. She wasn't surprise of Zinnia's behavior since it was expected for the village chief and its founder to be the most excited to celebrate her village's anniversary.

2B could relate too and feel the same sort of joy and cheeriness coming from honoring their Village's founding. "It's hard to believe that's its already this time of the year. I know it feels like time passes quickly when you're too busy to notice."

2B muses as well, sensing all the nostalgia and cheer emanating from all the other people around her. "And there is this sense of celebration, to be proud for our village lasting this long and for another year."

"Especially with how the past month was for us." 6O adds mirthfully. "I'm amaze that we could still celebrate, even with the current crisis we are facing."

2B agrees with her friend. "True. I won't be surprise if Zinnia had to cancel celebrating YoRHa's founding if our black blight situation escalated and becoming too dangerous for us to handle..."

"…But right now. There is a certain peace in the air." 2B looks around and notices the very peaceful atmosphere around them, no matter how quickly it could change. It was nice, and with no monster related trouble to be solved, 2B thought to herself of liking it. She felt good from feeling this certain presence in the village time to time.

And to share it together with a friend. Which was the reason why 2B is hanging out and spending some time with 6O. Who told her beforehand that she was going to be busy helping the guild for the preparations of the festivities later for the week. Adding more reason for them to find time to catch up.

Hence their meeting up early in the morning and simply loitering around the Guild square, watching the festival's preparation proceedings before they part ways for their own tasks to accomplish for the day.

"Huhuhu… And all of this, is thanks to the efforts of our diligent hunters!" 2B heard 6O start, turning to her friend and finding an amused glint flicker in the eyes of the blonde handler.

"How so?" 2B asked.

In response 6O proceeds to explain to her, gushing at some of the achievements she's made with 9S and A2. "You guys have suppressed and cornered the black blight to a single area and now the forest is almost completely healed of it. Plus with the other list of achievements you guys made, monsters behavior is an all-time low and returning to normal!"

"And as a result, stabilizing the current locale to a point that we could actually afford to celebrate without worrying about anything!" 6O cheered, before she gives a grateful smile aimed to 2B, surprising her. "So it's really thanks to you guys we could celebrate a week of fun, and for facing the black blight successfully. You guys should be proud of yourselves. I know I am."

2B felt a little bashful from hearing 6O praise her and the rest of the hunters for their work against the black blight. She wouldn't lie that she felt some warmth from hearing her, 9S and A2's work effort were being acknowledged.

"Thank, you... But we still should remain vigilant of the black blight. It's presence is still here, just reduced, but I am hopeful we will vanquish it in time."

2B couldn't help pointing out that they couldn't afford to be too lax. But she knows with her, 9S, and A2 working in secret of curing the black blight, they'll be able to cleanse it from the land eventually.

She saw 6O nodding alongside her, agreeing before speaking up. "You're not wrong. Still, it doesn't mean you guys can't have some fun in the festival. And when I mean you guys, I really mean you, 9S and A2!"

"Like, YoRHa's top hunters deserve to take a break too you know." 6O stated in a knowingly manner, to 2B's confusion.

"Huh?" 2B couldn't help the curious tilt of her head towards her friend in inquiry.

6O simply gave a nonchalant answer in response that just raised 2B's eyebrow in further question. "Silly 2B, you should know that everyone in YoRHa is grateful to what you guys have done. And wants to see their resident star hunters take a break, relax and reward you guys for your services."

"Ah… Excuse me?" She was stuck at 6O referring to her, 9S and A2 as star hunters of YoRHa. Wondering if she heard right of what 6O was implying and didn't think that their actions made that much of an impression to the village.

"Oh c'mon 2B… tell me you didn't notice." 2B heard 6O made an audible snort of amusement at her cluelessness, before giving an eager and enthusiastic response explaining to her. "You guys are the talk of the town! Our YoRHa super stars! Ace hunters of our guild who paved the way to our success against the black blight!"

Again, 2B felt little bashful at hearing the praise her friend was giving.

"At your age, you guys were coming in reporting to the guild and making more progress than any of the veteran hunters here at YoRHa. And everybody is hearing what you guys done! Either from hunter gossip or people seeing the haul of monsters you've bringing back from your hunts!"

"I see…" 2B could understand why she, 9S and A2 have garnered some attention, both in and outside the guild, because of their contribution to the black blight investigation. She put herself to not underestimate the YoRHa rumor mill and understood the vigilance of being careful from mentioning personal secrets to the public. Since of course, there were certain reasons to their success lately with the black blight that 2B and the others couldn't reveal.

Which, unfortunately, in this case only bloats up their reputation. Because of people exaggerating some of their more unexplained feats or actions as a result.

Case in point, 2B got a little worried when 6O suddenly brings up two of their most obvious accomplishments, she and the others have done in relation. That no doubt made the most impression among the villagers.

"I'm still feel like gawking at some of the things you guys did in your investigations. I mean, you guys decapitated a Blighted Nargacuga and looked like you've burned a Blighted Rathalos and Rathian with their own fire! Like, who—what hunter does that?!" 6O exclaimed with an awed expression.

'The kind of hunters who brings a monster rider and their voracious Deviljho to their quest' is what 2B would have answered to her friend, but instead. "…Oh, yes. You're referring to what happened in those quests. It really was an unexpected turn of events… We really had to improvise for us to make it out of those hunts."

"People are still wondering how you guys did it too… But I'm not going to ask you of the details. I'm still a bit icky on the gory stuff and what not." 6O said to 2B's relief. She really didn't want to try to make up a plausible explanation or bullshit a sound response to 6O, without risking exposing 9S's rider secret and Rogue's existence.

She might have to perform a little change of subject, to steer 6O away from their hunter related activities and from asking anything.

"Seeing you subtlety wanting and justifying that I should take break from hunter-related work." 2B began to jest with 6O, who smiled in response with equal mirth.

"I suppose you want us to discuss and plan out what we could together during the days of the festival." She asked, no doubt knowing 6O has some plans for them during the Founder's festival.

"Oh yes! Good, you remembered. I really needed to tell you something." 6O answered her, with a look of utmost urgency.

"Specifically for tomorrow's opening night?" 2B guessed, remembering that important detail regarding their village's annual weeklong event. "I do recall both the first and last days of our village's weeklong anniversary are the busiest and have the most events planned. I remember last year we went as group with 9S, A2, 32S and 801S, but got separated because of the crowds of people that night."

2B asked. "I suppose we're going to plan something out to avoid repeating the same thing happening this year?"

Surprisingly, 6O answers her with something unexpected. "Oh, you don't have to worry about us, since it'd be just you and 9S who'll be free going out tomorrow night."

"Wait. W-what?" 2B was surprised at her friend's admission. "Why? I thought we're going together like last year?"

With sheepish expression 6O's explains to her. "Well, about that... You already know how I'm going to be busy helping the guild for the entire festival. Specifically, if I didn't mention it, on both the first and last days of the festival."

"You are?" 2B didn't know, her expression showing it, which 6O noticed.

6O proudly explains to 2B's benefit, expounding more of her role and job for the festival. "I'm actually part of the stagehands to assist our chief Zinnia this year, hence I'll spending tomorrow right here in the square. Helping out in the stage plays and bands performing for tomorrow night's event. And it's practically a free showing for me too, hehehe! So, I wouldn't be able to go out and go around the village to visit the stalls, especially for tomorrow and the last day of the week. But we could still hangout in the days between."

Nodding in understanding, 2B could get why 6O won't be free tomorrow. Yet, there's still the rest of their friends and 2B asked about them too. "But how about the others? Are 32S and 801S busy too? And I haven't heard from A2 of her doing anything."

"Yeah both guys have plans tomorrow too…" 6O says, bringing a hand to her chin making a thinking pose. "I don't know with 32S since he says its secret. But for 801S, he says he's helping the game stalls being done by the research center this year—"

"Oh! I hear they're done designing and setting up a cool ride too!" 6O adds to 2B, clearly excited and knowing something about the stuff the research center was going to do, before the blonde girl' expression turns to a questioning one to 2B.

"A2 on the other hand, well I was about to ask you if she has any plans, since she's your sister. Did she say anything to you?"

"None, as far as I know." 2B answered, doubtful of what A2 was going to do. She was getting worried for sister since they found A4's carving knife. Always lost in thought starring at it.

"Oh well. Though chances are she's going to do something to help out in the guild to be busy. Unless she wants to be a third wheel between you and 9S… then I'm certain she'll pick the former." 6O stated thoughtfully, while 2B hooks in the latter of what she said.

"Assuming 9S and I are going out tomorrow…" 2B huffily replies. "I'm getting a feeling that you and the others are trying to set us to have a date tomorrow."

"Why not?" 6O asks with teasing grin, adding. "And hey, at least you admit it's a date. Instead of bumbling that it's not and saying you guys are 'just hanging out', like the other times we've tease you."

2B quietly retorts. "I don't bumble…"

"Besides, like I said, takes this chance to relax and de-stress from your hunter work. And have some fun with Nines!" 6O suggests with much enthusiasm.

And 6O clarifies with a more serious expression towards 2B. "Plus, on a proper date. Maybe the first one you guys could have that's not outside in Whistill forest, doing something different than hunting activities like fishing or cuddling in the woods."

2B points out. "The latter doesn't come close to being true… mostly."

"Not my point." 6O responds unamused, before resuming. "Look. I respect both you and 9S taking your own pace on how you guys want to go with your relationship. But why not take the chance right now and not miss the opportunity? I mean everyone could see how much closer you are now with 9S, since the first-year you guys met. And as your best friend I could tell, you know it too. Plus, my intuition is telling me that the both of you have been wanting to be even closer lately."

"I see… Wait. What do you mean everyone?" 2B asks with serious tone and a raised eyebrow.

6O nervously looks away, replying while not meeting her accusing eyes. "Ah... There might a YoRHa betting pool—But nothing for you to worry about! Nothing at all… heh…he…"

2B continues to stare at her friend unamused, but lets it go as she suddenly began to turn her thoughts towards 6O's suggestion of asking 9S out tomorrow night.

She was wondering too if they were really closer than before, and maybe they could finally act on each other's feelings. They learned much of each other since the first day they met, have expressed liking each other's quirks and comfortable with each other's flaws. Heck, 2B knows they've learned a lot more about each other this year from the dangers and oppositions they've faced together.

If anything, in the face of adversary or any difficult situation they've find themselves in, 2B finds it more comfortable with 9S by her side facing them together. Triumphing and sharing the victory as a team—as trusting partners… or calling them something else beyond that.

2B could tell 9S felt the same, since he was always an open book for her to read. Yet, he could still hide some things underneath his expressive demeanor and surprise her, just like hiding his monster riding activities for so long and going unnoticed.

So, maybe her Nines, might be holding some even more deeper feelings towards her. Ones she would like to know… and maybe—hopefully—reciprocate with her own feelings towards him.

Still... There are some nerves that would arise from whether 2B should pursue these newfound thoughts and wants.

Despite her confidence of 9S's feelings towards her, it still matters whether he would act on them or not, like she herself was considering to.

"I don't know 6O… Asking 9S out, on a real date, I'm not sure if it's the right time or if it's too soon." 2B said, feeling a bit unsure about taking the next step. Her friend could notice her unease, as 2B could see 6O nod in understanding.

"I won't blame for you being nervous. You're probably thinking about some hypothetical scenarios like what if it goes wrong and it ruins what friendship or relationship you have with him right now. Heck, I bet Nines too is feeling the same or maybe feeling more nervous! You know, I could imagine both of you in a situation, where the two of you are too nervous to speak to each other or something."

2B agrees to 6O's assessment. She too can imagine a scenario of her and 9S unable to speak or interact to each other due to the awkward tension and nerves.

"But I think you've got nothing to worry about 2B. It's pretty obvious how enamored the two of you are towards each other." 6O cheerfully says, giving 2B a reassuring look. "I've noticed how you've been spending more time than usual with 9S. Even with the black blight investigation ongoing and not just from partnering up for some hunts. I lost count the number of times you guys head out and comeback happier than usual. And I don't need to guess why that's the case."

6O then teases with wiggle of her eyebrows. "I won't be surprise if you guys actually got together by then. Or if anything, you guys already are and just haven't realize it yet… I bet something happened between the two of you that you haven't told me yet~"

2B couldn't help feeling the blush on her cheeks from heating up because something almost—Almost—happened. That would have resulted to her and 9S relationship progressing to another level.

She remembers her time with 9S in Pondry hills. How distraught he was about thinking of the worst of his past, the vulnerability she felt seeing him like that and considering giving up to not get hurt. Her encouragement and confidence for him to continue despite the pain, to see him whole. And how happy she felt seeing him recover and promising to be with each other should the worst come to pass.

Then the small kiss of affection he gave in response to her and how she wanted more… How they wanted to do more.

And they would have one, if they weren't rudely interrupted by a flock of fleeing wyverns.

Now, 2B is wishing that they weren't interrupted. The same feelings resurfacing of wanting more, and hoping they find themselves in a similar situation again, so they could do it. This time, without anything else getting between them or be promptly called to duty.

"Seeing the look on your face, is it safe to say I turned some of your doubts away?" 6O chimed to her.

Having an idea of what she wants to do, 2B decides to think on about it more and not rush or act too rashly. "Let me settle my thoughts …before I'll consider asking Nines about tomorrow."

"But I won't put my decision on hold until tomorrow. I'll try to figure out and get an answer today." 2B quickly adds, making it clear that she wasn't making any excuses.

Before she shyly looks at 6O asking. "And if I do… make a decision to, you know… can you help me?"

"Of course 2B! No need to ask. I'll support you and be cheering you on if you do." 6O cheerfully states while suddenly hugging 2B, happy for her, before whispering in her ear. "And who knows, he might be planning the same thing too. Right now, he's probably thinking about on how to ask you out with the other boys."

2B won't admit loud that the idea excited her a bit and began to hope 9S would be the one to initiate instead of her. It'd save both of them the trouble too.

Elsewhere in a mobile caravan shop…

"What do you mean you guys aren't free tomorrow tonight? I thought we'd be going to the opening night together like last year, with 2B and the others?" 9S asked in confusion towards 32S and 801S, who were giving apologetic looks.

"Sorry Nines. Duty calls and plans were made in the research center, just as Zinnia announced we were going to have the celebration a few days back." 801S said, feeling guilty.

"And I too have made plans for tomorrow night. Like really important, since YoRHa has returned in inviting tourist to come and visit again." 32S adds, also feeling apologetic.

"I guess, I don't blame you guys being busy, knowing our circumstances and all." 9S stated, remembering how A2 told him it was YoRHa's founding festival starting tomorrow. And since that everybody beforehand wasn't expecting the village celebration to push through, because of the black blight, not much was planned until Zinnia announced that the festival wasn't cancelled days earlier.

And because of his, 2B, A2, and Rogue's recent actions, the present conditions in the forest are now ideally safe with the black blight isolated in the hollow valley. Hence, the conditions were perfect and YoRHa could celebrate freely without any worries so far.

So, 9S knows it shouldn't be a big deal if 32S and 801S couldn't have time to hangout because they were busy on short notice. At least they'll still be able to enjoy another year celebrating YoRHa's founding and with his friends being part of it.

"Still, I'd like to know what you guys are doing tomorrow. Maybe I can visit you guys when you're at your stalls or when you guys aren't too busy?" 9S inquired. To his surprise, he saw 32S react with an embarrassed look and 801S giving the other boy a sly grin.

Much to 9S's confusion. "Okay, did I say something wrong? I can't help notice 32S's weird look."

"No… nothing wrong per say." 801S started, which 9S also notice him wiggling his eyebrows at 32S. "But 32S might be a little too busy tomorrow night, for any of us to visit him. Hehehe…."

32S responds with warning look and a jab of his elbow to 801S's side. "Quit it Dude."

"Just teasing. But you gotta tell Nines."

"Hey guys, I'm right here." 9S said, still in the room and getting their attention.

"Right, sorry. How about I go first?" 801S said, as he begins to reveal the plans the research center has for the festival. "So you know how the research center conducts games and rides as a way to test some of our products, right? Well, I'm put in charge of the games and rides for this year and the theme we're going for this festival is YoRHa's 8 mysteries/phenomenon!"

9S reacted with surprise at 801S. "Wait, you're in charge of the games this year, really?!"

"Yup!" 801S nodded proudly in reply.

9S suddenly took note of something from what 801S said. "…Wait, 8 mysteries? I thought it was 7?" He asked, knowing that there were only 7 mysteries he recalls there being in YoRHa.

"Oh. They actually added what you did during YoRHa's stampede and are calling it the mysterious Garuga rider…" 32S answered, playfully with an ominous tone on the latter half to 9S's shock.

"Really another one?!"

801S couldn't help his smirk at 9S when he replies. "Yup. And that makes it the third time you've added another mystery to the 8 mysteries of our village!"

"You should be honored Nines! The research center is making games based on your shenanigans!" 32S jest as well, joining in the teasing with 801S, much to 9S chagrin.

"Okay, yeah, yeah. I'm honored." 9S sarcastically replied before asking 801S. "Still if you're in charge for this year's games and rides instead of the head researcher, what's Jackass doing?"

Normally Jackass is the one who was always involve with the games in previous festivals, as 9S knows the explosive addict would always take the chance to test one of her experiments or tools in disguise as fortunately harmless stall games or rides. Which ends up being surprisingly popular to the festival goers, to everyone in YoRHa—and to the Commander's—disbelief.

801S held a hand to his head, feigning a headache as he answers. "…Yeah, there's a reason to why the head researcher of the research center delegated her tasks to her assistant—in others words 32S here, can best explain that."

Both 9S and 801S turned their attention to 32S, seeing him also feigning a tired expression as he explains. "Yeah, it's my related to my dad."

"Pops?! Wait. I know he and Jackass are dating… does that mean Jackass wanted to go out with him at the festival tomorrow?" 9S asked, both curious surprised, at the conclusion he came up with regarding Jackass.

32S denies it with a small shake of his head. "No… But I wish that's the case. Though, you're not wrong thinking of them going out together tomorrow. They are—Well, it's just that them going out, is actually them performing as a heavy metal rock band together for tomorrow night, as one of the musical performances in the stage plays."

"Really!? That's kinda cool!" 9S exclaimed in surprise. He didn't expect Jackass or Pops to be performing tomorrow night at the stage plays. "I know Jackass is Jackass, but she can expertly play several different hunting horns, especially the rad guitar looking ones. Plus, I know Pops is a close second and with a shockingly good screamo voice."

"Nines right. I mean your singing voice has to come from somewhere." 801S pointed out to 32S, who snorts but nods in agreement, replying.

"Yeah, it is kinda cool. But I'm kinda worried too, since I know he's going to be with Jackass and they're going to be using some pyro technics for more flare. I just hope the only thing they'll set off to explode are the crowds cheers tomorrow. And not whatever it is that will send them blowing up to space."

"I can see both of your concerns." 9S stated to 32S and 801S, understanding the weary expressions they held. Though that bring into mind one other thing in relation.

"Wait... Does the Commander know about this? She always cautious on matters related to Jackass, and being loud, and her explosives… and public safety to name a few."

"And that's the other thing… Commander White is okay with it!"

"And not just okay… she's part of the band as their lead singer!"

Both 32S and 801S had shock expressions with their reply, their words uttered with sheer disbelief.

"What?!" With 9S uttering equally in disbelief, sharing his friends incredulous expressions.

"No way!?"

"Yes, way!" Both 32S and 801S answered in unison.

"Really?!"

"Yes, really!"

"How?!" 9S asked, wondering what could have made the Commander to agree to sing heavy metal rock songs, at a stage tomorrow night, in front of a lot of people… and with Jackass, Jackass. Plus Pops.

"Believe it or not." 32S started to explain. "Dad told me Jackass was able to convince Commander White to join them, by explaining they could attract the talking Qurupeco, with how vulgar some heavy metal songs are, and capture it this year. Apparently, I'm told the bird wyvern occasionally flies around YoRHa during the festival to listen to the musical performances."

"I see, so it's probably trying to mimic our songs too and not just our language." 9S said, feeling a tiny bit responsible of the monster's behavior knowing of his involvement of teaching it how to mimic human words… and the resulting ire the commander has grown against it.

"Wow the commander can hold a grudge." 9S commented.

"Yeah, or she really just enjoys heavy metal rock, based on what the YoRHa rumor mills say." 801S spoke with a shrug, unsure. "Maybe Jackass was able to convince her to have some fun this year and take a break from all the black blight business."

9S wouldn't think highly of both 801S's explanations to be possible or true regarding Commander White, knowing how she is occasionally.

Regardless, it's a bit exciting to know that the world will witness the esteemed Commander of YoRHa sing heavy metal rock songs, maybe even the wyverian kind. 9S is surprised he didn't get to know about it sooner from the YoRHa rumor mill these past couple of days. It might be fun to watch the commander perform, with Jackass and Pops.

Speaking of Pops and having an idea regarding 32S, 9S asked. "So 32S, is the reason why you can't hangout tomorrow is because you'll be manning your stall, while Pops is absent?"

"Uh, no… Not exactly." 32S answered with a small blush on his face, while 801S looks at him with a teasing look.

9S's curiosity was peaked, wondering why his friend had that expression until 32S expounded more. "So you see, with my Dad performing tomorrow. He decided that we close the shop for tomorrow night, and he gave me some free time for myself..."

32S then timidly look away, continuing. "…You know to enjoy the festival. Besides asking me to watch him perform later that night… and so… I… well…. Mm…"

"…And you?" 9S raised an eyebrow from 32S mumbling something incoherent. He could see 32S become even less responsive to his inquiry, until 801S noticed it too and gave other boy a nudge with his elbow, coupled with a knowing look.

"C'mon 32S. Tell him already!"

"Okay, okay. I'll say it…" 32S confessed. "I made plans to see someone tomorrow." To 9S's surprise from his admittance.

He couldn't help exclaiming. "Really?! You mean like a date!?"

"Yes, like a date!" 801S confirms excitedly and adds with equal mirth in teasing. "Plus… its his girlfriend he's going to meet tomorrow~"

"His girlfriend!?" 9S says in shock again, facing towards to 32S who was chastising 801S for revealing to soon.

"Dude! I was going to tell him! You didn't have to blurt it out!"

9S couldn't help himself from trying to guess who 32S's girlfriends was. "OH, oh, oh… is it the one you've been writing and exchanging letters too?!"

801S chimes in additionally with equally imploring eyes towards their friend. "Is it? You never told us anything about your girlfriend, or when I found out too. You're always so secretive about her."

"I guess there's no use stopping or hiding some stuff from you guys…" 32S says to himself with a defeated tone. Then admitting out loud as an afterthought. "Then again, I'm friends with a research assistant and a monster hunter scout…"

Calming down the two first, 32S gives a serious look to them, which 9S knew he didn't want to get interrupted. "Look, I won't say her name or go in full detail about her, because… well…—we still want to keep are relationship private, to ourselves and not want to risk anybody finding out yet."

"Why? Is she shy? 9S asked, which 32S responds with a shake of his head and a shrug of his shoulders.

"No, rather she's nervous of her overprotective dad… and just him, you know. So we're keeping it a secret for now and not want anyone leaking it to him accidentally. So, he won't find out until my girlfriend tells him." 32S adds. "But she is planning to tell him someday soon… I hope—Hence why I'm haven't told my dad yet until she does, to be fair."

"Ah, we get it…" Both 9S and 801S can understand at this point and guessed that 32S's girlfriend was facing the old cliché overprotective and unaccepting father trope. They were a little surprise that their friend would be in a living scenario of the case honestly.

801S asks. "So, how long have you guy's been together and how did you guys meet?"

With 9S shooting his own question after. "What's she like?"

32S thought about what to say for second, before answering his friends. "Well, we've been dating for more than year now, but we've known each other far longer. I recall maybe two to three years ago we met and became friends? And what's she like? Uhm… to give a general description, she's a nice, well-read girl from Gildegaran. Who could be witty and sarcastic if she wants to be. Overall a kind and caring person who'd do her best to help others."

"Oh and to 801S other question, we met first through sending letters to each other, as you know since we've been exchanging letters since then." 32S adds, expounding more regarding how he initially met his girlfriend. "It started with an open exchange letter thing that the mail felynes were conducting at the time for travelers. You see travelers, for example nomadic merchants like me and my dad, can have pen pals to exchange letters with other people. Either for information or news of any sort of events happening that would help us out in business and the other stuff we need to know."

9S snaps his fingers, recalling. "Hey, I think I've heard about that… I think 6O mentioned she did something similar and has a similar pen pal like friend she met and exchanges letters with occasionally. I remember her saying it was someone in another branch of the guild." 9S said, remembering briefly that the bubbly handler in training shared that she had a letter friend, who writes to her about guild related matters. Sharing complaints and interest about their job and work as part of the guild.

"Oh, I'm actually doing those letter exchanges too, but its more professional than friendly." 801S adds, sharing his own experience with exchanging letters. "It's mostly for the research and other scientific matters I could learn from my own pen-pals too."

32S cuts in, bringing them back to his topic. "Well, my girlfriend and I met because a messenger felyne suddenly asked me to write a letter to her, about my travels with dad, and if I could share them."

"And I figured why not? So, I wrote to her. But I wasn't expecting to gain a pen pal and a new friend as a result… and later on someone I liked to date." The latter of what 32S said, made the boy blush a bit before explaining more to his companions. "She wrote back to me, introducing and telling more about herself. And that she was happy that I shared to her some of my stories and wanted to know more."

"I was happy to share. And that's how we began exchanging letters to each other and learning more about one another. Turns out we have somethings in common too. Hehehe." 32S couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped him, no doubt thinking of something fondly. Spurring 9S and 801S for him to spill more to their curiosity.

"Ooohhh, so what does this fair maiden have in common with our dear 32S?"

"Oh, oh, oh, maybe she shares the same taste for 32S's chocolate papaya shake!"

Both boys teased, much 32S chagrin. "Knock it off guys unless you don't want me to share anymore. But if you must know… Yes. My girlfriend does like my chocolate papaya shake, and she doesn't think it was an unholy accident of fruit and sweets."

9S and 801S made disgusted looks at the fact, grimacing that 32S's girlfriend liked his accidental culinary abomination.

"Look, besides are shared taste in beverages… Turns out my girlfriend and I also share the same interest in making flower presses, traveling and what sights or places we hope to see in the future, talking about monster and hunter related topics, like we do…" 32S listed a few shared interests he has with his girlfriend to 9S and 801S. "And she likes to craft items too, though unlike me, she's actually a good craftsman and she says it's because of her dad being a hunter. She helps him out by stocking up and preparing his needs whenever he goes out on a hunt…"

32S trails off for a brief moment, his expression turning to forlorn one, as he shares next. "We also share the same experience of being raised by single fathers… and losing our moms to the black scrawl."

"…Oh." 9S and 801S were surprise from learning that particular tidbit.

"…I guess, you guys do have a lot in common, in more ways than one…" 9S spoke, careful with his words and tone.

"Yeah, we do…" 32S nods agreeing, yet his expression turns to a fond one. "And maybe it's because of those share experience that we were able to bond so easily. I mean we still have our differences, but I think we got closer because of them too… She was the girl who dreamed of seeing the rest of world past the view of her bedroom window, and I was the boy who's seen much of it, yet never anchoring myself to one place for too long… Until YoRHa of course!"

32S's expression changes and grins with excitement. "Which is why I'm excited to show her around tomorrow, since she recently just told me she started traveling with her family to go around the world and YoRHa is their first stop. Thus, I'd get the chance to show her the village I could call home and spend at least the first night of YoRHa's Founding Festival with her, before she resumes her traveling after!"

32S couldn't hide the enthusiasm in his voice, no doubt happy to able to show off to his girlfriend the village he and his dad have grown fond of. 9S and 801S couldn't help being happy for their friend too and wanting to show their support.

"I'll make sure our ride tomorrow and the research center stalls we'll have, be in top shape for your date!" 801S chimed, promising to make sure the research center would show their best for tomorrow night, which was already a given order by Jackass, but the young research assistant was now more motivated in helping his friend show off.

"And I guess, I'll just leave the two of you alone tomorrow night and not be a bother. If I do see you two, I'll stir away and leave you guys to enjoy your night. Oh, if you want, we can make a list of things you guys can do together tomorrow besides watching the stage plays!" 9S said, offering his own kind of support. Not much he can do, but not be a third wheel and offer suggestions to his friend.

"I already made a plan for tomorrow—and no need to avoid us like a plague Nines, it's okay if we do meet up accidentally, but I do appreciated the thought." 32S said in thanks to 9S. Before adding. "But we can hangout on another day or the rest of the week since my girlfriend would be leaving the day after. It's a shame really, I would have wished for her to stay longer and maybe properly introduce her to you guys and all of our other friends if she allowed me."

9S replies. "That would be nice too, but maybe another time if it's not possible for your girlfriend. I bet she has her own things going in her travels."

32S nods his head, knowing better of his girlfriend. "Yeah, it's her first time traveling too, I bet she's going to try and see all the places I recommended to her before."

"I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer before we could meet 32S's girlfriend officially... But that doesn't change the fact I'll be the only one in our male group, who'll be going to festival without a date tomorrow." 801S joked about himself, with a dramatic wave of his hand to his head in woe. Much to 32S own amusement and to 9S confusion.

"801S, what do you mean? I'm not going out with date tomorrow either." 9S said, pointing it out to his friends.

Both 32S and 801S turn to him with a wicked twist of their necks, in a manner that almost risk snapping them. They were giving 9S an intense stare, coupled with a completely baffled and incredulous expression etched on both of their faces.

"Dude… you're not taking 2B tomorrow?"

"Yeah, I though you guys were dating already?"

Both boys asks in confusion to 9S, who was flustered from their sudden inquiry and implication. "W-wha-what?! I'm not taking 2B tomorrow! And who said we started dating?!"

"You're not?!" 32S exclaimed, shock that he wasn't already going out with 2B, much less taking her out tomorrow night.

"Oh Nines…" While 801S shakes his head in disappointment, even giving a pitying look at 9S, much to the other boy's annoyance. "Seriously bro? I thought you guys were thing already. I mean lately you guys do look more like one too!"

"Yeah, I heard around town you guys have been spending more time together outside of the village." 32S adds, also wondering. "I thought by the time I returned to YoRHa, you guys would be—I don't know, YoRHa's hottest monster hunting couple? Now I think about it, I do remember I placed a bet that you guys would be a couple before this year's Founding Festival."

"Me too, now we both owe Jackass at least half-a-million zenny." 801S gripes with despair, with 32S sharing the same sentiment, patting the other boy on the back in comfort.

There's was a lot 9S would want to unpack from the latter of what his two friends have just said. Specifically there being betting pool, with his and 2B's progression of their relationship as the main focus, but he'll ask them about that on another time.

"You guys—Look. We were only seen together more because we're partners for the black blight investigation and there's really nothing else to it."

They didn't believe him, seeing how both 32S and 801S were instead giving him meaningful looks, and 9S no doubt knows his friends would—are going to try and convince him to ask 2B to go on a date with him tomorrow night.

Both boys heavily implying for them to be official already, judging how their eyelashes were fluttering vividly, begging 9S with their eyes to do so.

As if knowing telepathically that he already knew what they were going to ask and were ready to give counter arguments against his own answers to convince him.

"Guys—"

"C'mon, Nines! This is your chance! For once you guys can go out in town and have an official date within the village. And not in the forest outside!"

"Yeah, we know you want it too! I mean both of you do! We could see it—everyone could see it! The way your eyes look at each other and your simple gestures being far more romantic than platonic."

801S and 32S appeared to be determined. And while 9S appreciates their loyal support in his pursuit of being together with 2B, he just wish they knew that he still felt a bit uneasy to go for it.

He wasn't dense to his feelings nor does he not notice 2B's own for him, he's happy knowing that there is a mutual affection between them, really.

9S knows he would have jump for the chance to ask 2B out immediately upon learning this knowledge. Feeling confident and secure his feelings would be reciprocated, and not be rejected, if he were to confess and progress their relationship further.

But he still wasn't sure if it was the right time to take the next step. Scared too, if they go further while there were still somethings in their life to prioritize first, before forming a relationship.

Like solving the black blight, finding any remnants of A4, and finding his lost memories.

9S would argue that it's better to focus on those first, before having a relationship that might end up burdening them. But before he could voice his thoughts out, he heard both 32S and 801S give a loud sigh and looked up to see both boys giving him meaningful and respectful looks.

801S starts. "Look Nines, you don't give us the whole spiel of why you think it's not a good idea to ask 2B out. I think we heard a lot of speeches similar to it by now, so no need to waste your breath making excuses, we're not going to force you to ask 2B out if you don't want to. Plus, we know you're passed denying having feelings for 2B, so don't think you could give us that spiel either."

He gives a pointed look at 9S. "If anything, right now, I know both you and 2B already know you guys have feelings for each other. But haven't gotten around anywhere from not acting on them. I mean it's right there and everyone can see it, but you guys keep skirting it around like you don't."

9S shyly made a non-committal shrug in response, not denying, or confirming 801S's point.

"Yeah, you guys are sort of just dancing around each other lately." 32S agrees with 801S, before adding. "But just like what 801S said earlier, we won't force you two to get together, since it's your relationship not ours and I think our other friends understand that too… Even if it gets frustrating watching you guys at times. But we respect both of you and know to give you guys the privacy and space you need for yourselves."

But 32S quickly adds. "Though I know—or have an idea, of the fear you may have on taking the next step. And I can kinda get it too, of how hard it is confessing to someone who's been a really close friend, and not wanting to ruin our friendship or whatever it is we have if it goes wrong." 32S spoke solemnly, understanding 9S's hesitation and knowing of his doubts.

Probably coming from his own experience with his own girlfriend, as 9S guessed. And he could tell from the serious look 32S was showing.

"So, we get it that it might be a little bit more complicated for you… in a sense." 801S adds with an easy smile. "So we won't give you a hard time for it and just be here for you bro."

32S and 801S's words made 9S rethink that maybe his friends already have an idea of his own thoughts regarding and his relationship with 2B. He's really lucky to have two good friends who both support and respect his wishes.

9S would bet that if he had met 32S and 801S in the past, even with his full memories and as a monster rider, they'd still be friends to this day.

32S encouragingly adds. "Though, if you do want to take the opportunity, just ask yourself this first: Do you want to stay as friends with 2B a little bit longer? …Or do you want, to be more with her?"

9S's mind froze upon hearing 32S's words, focusing on the last part of what his friend said.

Simplified to: Stay as friends or be something more.

9S began running through deep into his thoughts and feelings, to answer the question given to him. Focusing on 2B, his memories and experiences with her. Those moments reminding him of how much she means to him, since their very first meeting, and how much has changed since then in their current relationship.

And 9S knows, 2B will always be someone important to him.

She was the one who saved him from the darkness and grief that threatened to drown him, both literally and metaphorically, and she became a part of his life he welcomed earnestly. She changed quickly from being his savior to his closes friend and family, until 9S felt their bond becoming closer than a familial one. That also felt too distant, and he couldn't simply called it a friendship either.

And every day they got closer and closer, accepting each and every part of themselves as they learn more about each other.

Just recently, 9S was over the moon and felt great relief that 2B would still want to be with him, even after finding about Rogue and the rest of his secrets he kept about his past from her prior. If anything after that incident, 9S felt that he was even closer to 2B than ever before.

And he couldn't deny the growing feelings of desire inside him, to go even further with 2B.

He wasn't aware he spoke his realization sincerely out loud.

"…I want 2B—I want to be… more with 2B."

9S looked at his friends, eyes filled with resolve and no fear of denying what he said. But he was met with surprisingly much cheering and exclamation from them upon hearing his answer.

"He wants to be more with 2B!" 801S cheered, cupping his hand in front of his mouth as if he was shouting to the world, and crying with relief of the news that his friend was finally wise up to his feelings.

"And he admits it, with a cheesy line~! CHU~ CHU~!" 32S teased with equal mirth, much to 9S feelings of embarrassment from them teasing him.

"O-oh… S-shut up you guys!" 9S felt his cheeks blush and cringe from his earlier cringing words. Wondering why it sounded much cooler in his head and decided to blurt it out.

801S was quick to wrap his arm around 9S shoulder in reassurance. "Don't worry Nines, you have our support! We're right here to help make you and 2B together possible!"

32S adds encouragingly. "Yeah, we could practice some lines and maybe you'll be able to ask 2B around by the end of the day! I'm all set up for my date tomorrow, so we can help do the preparations for your date tomorrow too!"

"32S, 801S, I didn't mean—I wasn't going to ask her out today and you guys don't have to…" 9S was quickly regretting confessing his true feelings to his friends and tried to stop them.

"Oh, let's talk about where you can take 2B to watch the stage plays tomorrow night!"

"Oh, I think I know the place you're talking about. It's perfect for couples to be alone together too!"

9S protest fell on deaf ears, and while he kept trying to change their minds, he gave up eventually after some time. And ended up joining along 32S and 801S's planning session. They eventually settled on something and began preparing for it to be ready by tomorrow night. Much of their time for the rest of day was spent in doing so.

Though additionally for 9S, he also spent a lot of time contemplating on what to say and gathering confidence for later, when he'll invite 2B out for tomorrow night.

32S and 801S kept egging him on, until he promised he'll ask her out by the end of day.

'So much for his friends not being too pushy.' 9S thought bitterly but didn't hold it against them.

Elsewhere at the research center of YoRHa, Jackass was deep in thought inside her office. Making a tough choice of what to do with her current dilemma.

Helping her and standing across her personal desk, was the equally dignified Commander White. Who was currently holding a hand to her head as if she were nursing a recent migraine.

Figuratively, she was.

"…Why did I agree to this?" The well-respected commander of YoRHa's guild asked herself, questioning the life choices she made that led to her current situation.

"It's not really that hard to choose. Do you want a wicked face paint design or a hardcore mask? Or do you want to go a step further and make it a hybrid?"

Of course, being friends with Jackass is one of, if not the reason, to why Commander White had made many questionable life choices. She even considered having an early retirement to get away from the stress of reigning her friend occasionally, if not for the fact that she'd be pushing the responsibilities to someone else less capable of handling the explosive antics of the chaotic researcher. The poor soul wouldn't be able to handle Jackass on her worst day either.

Not that there were a lot to choose from. And so far, Commander White considers Zinnia the only one who could even do a better job than her in managing Jackass's eccentricities…

But the wyverian chief had her own brood of eccentric individuals to fret on over.

"So…" Jackass stared at White, waiting for her answer.

White let out a sigh of exasperation before asking. "Does our attire really have to be akin to post-apocalyptic or leather? …or both?"

"Could be worse. I mean we would have gone wearing the more risk armor designs we've originally planned." Jackass shrugged, pointing out. "I mean have you seen the more, elaborate and modified, female and male Kirin armor set designs? Or the more leg exposing deviant armor sets? The R-18 tongs? Not that you're a stranger to them of course."

White wasn't a stranger to them at all. "Yes, you' re right. I am accustomed to them… unfortunately." Really, she was. And White knew how exposing monster hunting armor can be at times.

She wonders if there was a certain tradition or culture all blacksmiths have that they adhere to. Designing and creating armor that is at times less functional in appearance than it is appealing.

And yet they still work in protecting a hunter, despite the amount of skin exposed. ESPECIALLY for the female armor sets.

But the commander would rather be wearing her more revealing armor, than whatever get-up Jackass was trying to make her suit up for their performance tomorrow night. And the fact that she'd somehow agreed to performing with Jackass is the other thing that's baffling her currently, among other thoughts.

"Relax, White… we're going to do something fun together. Aren't you a little excited?" Jackass asked, no doubt sensing White's discomfort.

"I'm still trying to understand how you roped me into this… performing with your band that you made with your boyfriend and a couple of musically inclined researchers for tomorrow night's festival opening."

"Well, I did say I have a plan to catch that talking Qurupeco!" The head researcher said proudly, only to be shot down by White.

"I know that's not true; you don't have a plan. And you know Zinnia and I wouldn't allow harm to come to our villagers or guests, by executing a capture operation in the middle of an event." White reminded her, and not one bit did she believe Jackass when she suddenly came to her with a request and had compensated by telling she has a plan to safely capture the monster without the need of explosives.

The commander briefly recalls one of the reasons she was joining Jackass is to watch over her friend and making sure the pyrotechnics she's prepared won't blow up the entire square.

"Yeah… But the big bird doesn't cause trouble in the first place, beside its rampant cussing of you." White gave Jackass a small glare at the reminder of the foul-mouthed bird wyvern, before the head researcher resumed talking.

"He does get pretty docile when you feed him and he won't cause trouble after, surprisingly." Jackass said, with a wistful expression in contrast to White's aghast and livid one, upon hearing what she just said.

"You've been feeding that cussing irritation! Are you the one who taught it?!"

"My names is Jackass—" Jackass told absently as if an afterthought, before changing the topic back to White. "But that's not the point… The point is, you accepted my invitation because you wanted to. Simply as that."

"How could I—"

Jackass cut White off before she could respond, with the head researcher giving her friend a leveled look as she spoke seriously, explaining. "White, let me be real and honest to you right now… You deserve a break, to have some fun and time without all the burden on your shoulders for being the Commander of YoRHa. And I'm not the only one who thinks so too, both Zinnia and Anemone stepped up to handle everything this year, because they saw you needed this break."

"What, because they say I'm too focus on the black blight investigation and 'procrastinating for nothing'. That I need rest when there's still danger right beneath the earth we stand?" White was annoyed at the notion that she needed a break. Heck, she was irritated that Zinnia still pushed through for the festival, despite the threat of the black blight still lingering over them. She argued. "I thought all of you understand we can't lower our guard yet, until the Black blight is completely wipe off our maps."

"And we do, we still have all the precautions made and done so none of us will get caught off guard should something arises." Jackass spoke up in defense, hands raised. Before moving closer to White and places one hand on her shoulder in good gesture.

The head researcher spoke carefully, knowing what she'll say next was sensitive to her old friend, but knew that she needed to hear it. "But I think… I think the reason to why your so wound up right now, is because you still haven't forgiven yourself with what happened to A4…"

Jackass saw White widen her eyes, briefly in shock upon hearing her words, before looking away with a guilty expression and shamed silence. No doubt the commander was still feeling guilty for what happened 3 years ago, during her initial encounter with the Black Calamity and A4.

"And I know—We know… it's been eating you up because we didn't find her, the moment we thought we would. And you're not the only one I know who's feeling the same." Jackass said, knowing a certain teenage girl either brooding or feeling the same frustration as White. Knowing that A4 was still lost somewhere in the caverns below Whistill forest.

White whispered softly, with Jackass still able to hear her. "…I thought we were close. We found her… But she wasn't there, she wasn't all there… her armor, her weapons, and anything left of her… it's still out there somewhere, missing."

"She's resting somewhere else, waiting for us to find her… But I don't know where." The Commander confessed; her face hard and voice filled with regret. "Now I feel I've let her down, and the rest of the people who cared for her... who're now waiting for her to come home."

White felt that she failed A4 for the second time too. The first time being, when she failed to stop the late hunter from sacrificing herself so that she could warn the guild, while making a promise to comeback with help and reinforcement. But she was too late, and the only thing she could do was try to find her and hope for the best… until she couldn't and gave up.

Not even able to honor her friend a proper burial, was one White's greatest regrets.

Now, when she thought she'd have a chance to redeem herself and even take vengeance on the Black Calamity through extinguishing the black blight, with a promising team leading the investigation, their search still came up short with only A4's carving knife that was recovered.

And some hope White had of finding A4 successfully, felt crushed that only a piece of her friend was left and possibly the only thing they may hope to find of her.

White couldn't help but feel the guilt and regret festering with her growing disappointment at herself.

Jackass could see it in her expression. The dejected look her friend has, did not suit her one bit.

"White, I know that you're blaming yourself for a couple of things and feeling responsible for most of them, but that's not always the case. There are somethings you can't control and its easy for one to blame oneself because of it—but I know A4 wouldn't blame you for anything that happened that day." Jackass spoke up, trying to snap White out of her funk and to listen to her. "And besides, our black blight operation is on hold and not over. We'll find A4 eventually and it's not like for you to give up so early. The White I know is too stubborn to back down against any situation, especially when it comes my antics …or a certain hunter boy's shenanigan."

White gave out a soft snort and a small smile in response to Jackass words, feeling a little bit better.

Jackass happily adds. "Also, if A4 was here, she'd be actually thanking you for watching over her little proteges. Probably just as proud as you are with how they turned out to be YoRHa's new star hunters."

"She'd be insufferable from boasting about them… and if she met 9S, they'll join forces in making my nonexistent migraine a real one." White replied, with a mock shaking of her head. Sporting a fond smile while recalling the late hunter's mannerism and antics. She knows A4 would spend an entire week gushing to her on how 2B and A2 have grown so much.

"Haha… she'd probably do both at the same time." Jackass said sharing the same sentiments as White, before giving a comforting squeeze on the commander's shoulder. "But I know she'll be asking you to have some fun and unwind. Ancients know she's the only one to get you to lighten up beside myself. She even got you to go sand sailing that one time!"

"Indeed… that was a nice experience." There was a short paused before White locked eyes with Jackass, confessing. "I miss her…"

"We miss her too…" Jackass said solemnly, giving the commander a quick hug, holding her friend for a few seconds of comfort before pulling back.

Her expression shifts to a mischievous one, drawing White's concern. "…Which is why we're going to use her monster flute that Devola and Popola left for us in our performance, To Honor Her!"

The Commander visibly panicked.

"Jackass no."

"Jackass, yes! Its inclusion will be a knockout!"

White was quick to reply. "There will be a knockout, and it will be the whole village coming down if your pyrotechnics won't do the job!"

"Hey, I'll be careful! I know Zinnia will have my head if I don't."

Indeed, both women knew that the last time the flute was used before being lost by A4, was during a celebration in Albarax they were invited to with Zinnia and A4. The latter wanted show them a piece she made with the damn instrument and performed a little tune.

They woke up the next day with no memory of what happened, still in the same event area with the other guests. It was almost considered an international incident since it left Albarax defenseless for an entire day.

Now White is putting her foot down, no matter what her friend's say, to prevent the same scenario from happening in YoRHa. She gave Jackass a warning look. "Jackass… No flute or I won't perform with you tomorrow."

Fortunately, Jackass was quick to concede. "Okay, okay, I won't include the flute. But if this means you'll get to have some fun with us, it's worth ditching the death trap."

The head researcher then wrap an arm around White and began ushering them out of her office. "Trust me it's going to be fun! And despite the rumors or what other people say about your reputation, you do have an awesome singing voice! I mean Pops and the other members want one more jamming session just to hear you, which I'm also looking forward too—Oh, you think you can do freestyle? Or go minutes just screamo? Maybe even have a duet with Pops!—"

Jackass kept prattling own to White's ear of various topics related to their performance tomorrow. Serious talks about regrets and guilt, put aside for more joyful thoughts. White appreciated what her friend was doing for her and remembers that there is a reason to why Jackass is her friend.

They made their way out to meet and have another practice session with their 'band' members. Jackass would continue to chime in a few more other reasons to why White should enjoy her short break from work and enjoy the festival.

And the commander surprisingly found herself believing Jackass's words. That maybe tomorrow night and the rest of the week of YoRHa's founding festival would be a good time for her.

White knows better to not let these opportunities pass less she regrets them later on. She doesn't know either, when the temporary peace YoRHa has would end before something else rises up for them to take care off.

So, until then, as a voice sounding similar to A4 says to her: 'Might as well make the most of it.'

It was noon when A2 decided to leave the house and decide to make her way to the guild, to find work or anything to do to help for the festival preparations in the coming days.

And gain some legit excuse she could use, to say she's too 'busy' tomorrow to accompany 2B and 9S to the festival night together. Leaving the two alone and knowing better that if 9S wised up and finally got the balls to ask 2B, she could avoid being a third wheel to the couple and allow their cliché romance to blossom or some shit.

She did meet Zinnia along the way as the wyverian chief was busy facilitating setting up the rest of the street decorations close to the guild building. After a short exchange of greetings and telling her how she hasn't got anything to do, despite being on leave from hunting work, her motherly guardian ask her that if she wasn't too busy and wanted to do something, then she'd have to find Anemone.

The field captain may have something for her to do, though Zinnia still stressed to A2 that she'd prefer her child wasn't working during the festival when she should be having fun. Yet, A2 had nothing better to do and knows that the few friends she has in YoRHa would be busy to hang out with her tomorrow night at least.

"Hey, Captain." Which is why A2 found herself greeting the Anemone in her own office. Which was a personal room, smaller and much different than the commanders. With A2 easily catching Anemone reading a few documents at her desk.

For a brief moment, A2 saw Anemone's expression had a look of concentration, probably the contents of the documents she was reading was for the festivities tomorrow, before her expression shifts to a surprise and welcoming one upon seeing A2.

"A2? What brings you here?" Anemone gave a pleasant greeting, keeping some of her paperwork away, as she turned her attention to the young hunter.

"I thought you'd be taking a well deserve rest at home, after all the work you and your party have done these past few weeks."

A2 simply shrugged in reply, "I was… but got bored. I think I'm still itching to do something you know, after being active for quite a bit…" The conversation between her and Anemone becoming casual and less formal than it normally is, like when they usually meet for monster hunter related business.

"So, I see. Then I assume Zinnia sent you here because she told you I may have something to for you to do" Anemone replied in a similar manner, relaxing. Despite the age difference between herself and A2, she felt like she could talk to A2 as friend and not like as mentor or an older figure in her life.

"Pretty, much." A2 responded, before rocking on the balls of her feet, asking. "So… Do you have anything for me to do? Do I need to slay something solo or get a team with 2B and 9S?"

Anemone shakes her head in response. "No, nothing of the sort. I'm sorry A2… There's nothing I would ask for you to do. All the task are delegated, and we have enough numbers to facilitate tomorrow's opening night. Plus, monster activity has stabilized, as you should know since it was your team who brought peace to our humble locale."

"So, nothing? Damn…" A2 felt a bit disappointed, yet knows that she shouldn't be, since its good that there's no problems plaguing YoRHa. Still with nothing for her to do, she might as well head back home and think of something else to do. Also apologize to Anemone for taking some of her time. "Guess, since there's no shit to do, I'll head back home and figure something out to stave my boredom. Sorry if I bothered you Captain."

Yet before A2 could leave, Anemone suddenly called for her to stay. "Hold on A2. Why not sit down and have a chat with me?"

"What?" A2 asked, surprised.

"Let's chat. It's been a while since I've got to talk with you. "The captain offered, much to A2's confusion. Yet Anemone's welcoming demeanor prompted A2 to stay and agree for a chat with the older hunter.

"Sure, why not." A2 made her way to sit down on one of the guest chairs in front of Anemone's desk, while the captain stood up and prepared some refreshments for both of them.

She made a cup of coffee for A2, serving it to the young hunter, before making one for herself and sitting back down behind her desk to begin their conversation.

"So, how are you lately?" Anemone asked, while taking a sip from her cup.

A2 shrugs, with a care and nonchalance. "Oh, you know. Doing okay. Relaxing after fighting the black blight for a bit. It's nice really, with nothing to do… and you know, thinking of some stuff."

"Thinking of some stuff? Like what?" Anemone gave A2 a curious glance, while the latter suddenly felt a bit wary.

"You know, stuff… Like monster hunting or… what I could do lately to stave some boredom."

"Hmm…"

A2 could see Anemone's unimpressed stare, or rather how her captain's eyes were suddenly prodding her of something; something that she wants her to tell her about.

"Are you sure… you weren't thinking about that?" Anemone spoke, deciding to be blunt, and pointing her finger to an object at A2's side.

A2 followed Anemone's finger and looked and realized the captain was gesturing to A4's carving Knife still strapped around her waist. She felt like panicking, feeling like she got caught doing a bad thing of carrying A4's knife with her. She might have been committing something, since A4's knife was also considered as an evidence to the ongoing investigation of its owner disappearance.

But Anemone was quick to reassure A2 that she wasn't in trouble. "Relax A2. There's nothing wrong with you carrying A4's knife and I'm just asking if your mind has been focused lately on A4… and other matters related to her." Anemone added delicately, gauging A2's reaction from her words.

The young hunter was currently sporting a pensive expression, thinking about how to respond. After a few short seconds, A2 relents and confess. "Maybe… my mind has been on her lately."

"You can talk to me or the other members of your family you know?" Anemone offered. "We won't force you either if you don' want to… but I know that you and a few others might have felt a bit… frustrated lately, with our lack of findings."

"It's not just that…" A2 clarified, before bringing A4's knife up form her waist and showing it to Anemone. "It's just lately, I realized… A4 has kept a lot of things from me—from us. That she had secrets she couldn't tell us before, and I wonder what some of them are."

Like why she journeyed to the depths below some locales and looking into hidden ecosystems, or why she had to go down to the underground caverns of Whistill forest during that fateful day, fatally encountering the Black calamity as the result.

A2 knew that A4 had her secrets and reasons for keeping them, even from her friends or the guild. But A2 understood too, the importance of keeping some secrets from the general public and prying eyes. Seeing that she and 2B were also keeping a secret from the village, for 9S's and Rogue's own safety.

She just wondered why? Why didn't A4 tell her any of them? Or if she didn't trust her enough to know them?

A2 sighed, confessing to Anemone. "I can't help but wanting to know more about A4, and the reasons for her actions and secrecy." She then looked and stared at the carving knife she was holding. "The reason why I keep looking at this, is because this thing was there when she disappeared. And I imagine if I stare long enough at it, the thing will suddenly come to life and give all the answers I want… But of course, it wouldn't. Since it's just a bloody knife."

"But it's A4's bloody knife." Anemone said, locking eyes with A2, a look of understanding passing between her and the younger hunter.

A2 is aware that Anemone knows what it's like to lose people close to her suddenly without any explanation, from her experience as a hunter. The Field captain could count the number of times she'd suddenly hear a friend or close acquaintance suddenly disappeared because of bad hunt gone wrong. Then having the same longing A2 felt whenever she's reminded of A4, wanting to know what happened to them and seeking answers.

Maybe that's why A2 could tell Anemone understood why she was so fixated on A4's Knife. She could guess her captain must have her own mementos of long past friends and allies; she hopes to see again someday.

A2 wonders how Anemone deals with it. The desire, the need to know of what happened, without getting obsessed with it.

"You know, even I am curious of A4 at times." Anemone shared, suddenly getting A2's attention. "She was also an enigma to some of her friends, and those in the guild as well. There was always this certain air in her that said she was keeping something a secret or anything similar."

"So, I don't blame for you wanting to know more about her or her secrets." Anemone added with a reassuring smile at A2, before giving some advice. "But always remember to not push yourself too much and be rash in finding the answers you seek."

Anemone then took a solemn expression." But you must know A2, that sometimes in life we may never get the answers we want to hear or get any answers at all. We might have to accept whatever truth we may find and then keep moving on with our lives… It's hard, I know. But I doubt A4 would want you to be too focused on finding her and disregard your own wellbeing, losing yourself in the process."

A2 was silent for a moment after hearing Anemone out, before replying. "I know… I understand what you mean."

A2 knew better than throwing all of herself into something and risk harming herself because she wasn't careful. She also knows A4 wouldn't want her to keep holding on to the past at the cost of her own future. That maybe one day, if she's unable to find the answers she seeks about her old mentor, A2 would still have to keep walking down the path of life and keep living on as A4 wanted her to…

And fulfill her old mentor's wish of her to be a great and successful hunter.

It was one of the many things A4 told her that A2 didn't—wouldn't forget for the rest of her lives.

A2 let out a sigh, before addressing Anemone. "You give good advice captain… And I'll take it by heart. But know you don't have to worry about me too much. A4 would have said the same to me if she was here."

A2 then gave Anemone a reassuring smile and added with a bit of mirth. "Plus, I got you, 2B, 9S, Zinnia and the pods watching over me in case I find myself in a situation I can't handle by myself."

It's true, A2 didn't feel alone like she was before as a kid. Even with the lost of A4, she still had a family to care and support her. A weird family, but her weird family, nonetheless. And friends and mentors she can't count on, like Anemone.

So,A2 knows she should really stop worrying them with her weird brooding and staring at A4's carving knife. And just settle in doing the best she could do for now at the present.

"Glad to know. Just remember we'll always be here for you if need us. And have faith that you'll find the answers you seek. I have full confidence you will." Anemone said giving A2 a comforting smile. The young hunter gives nod back and a smile in return, a rare occurrence to be grace from someone as guarded as A2.

And Anemone decided to tease her a bit. "It's a good thing too, you have others who could pull you off from beating up some poor soul, who looked at you wrong. I mean you were such handful as a young girl, A4 and Zinnia had to apologize to the parents of all the kids you've traumatize with your fists—"

"Hey, some of them deserved it back then! And I'm not the same reckless kid who picked fights before. I've changed." A2 argued, but her pouting in front of Anemone didn't help her case and instead earned an amused chuckle from the older woman. A2 could only turn away with an annoyed huff, avoiding looking at Anemone. "Hmph."

"Hey, don't be like that A2…" Anemone said, before muttering quietly. "Though it is cute…"

"I heard that!"

Anemone lightly chuckled again, as A2 grows flustered in response. Though to her relief, Anemone decided to change the topic and suddenly stood up, and motioned A2 to follow her.

"Speaking of seeing something cute…" She led A2 to a window at the side of the room, before looking out and pointing something to A2.

"…I get the feeling there's another reason why you don't want to be free tomorrow." Anemone said, as A2 then peered out the window.

And it was either from sheer coincidence or Anemone really has an insane level of intuition, but A2 saw 2B and 9S currently together and facing each other.

From how nervous and timid the both of them look, plus with a few of their friends, 32S, 801S and 6O, watching and hiding inconspicuously from the two, A2 could guess what was happening. She tried to read 2B and 9S lips and imagine how the conversation was going between the two. She only got a little of what they were saying to each other, but understood it, nonetheless.

'2B… a-about tomorrow…"

'Yes… Nines?"

'Everybody…is… they… So…we… if….would you want…'

'…...just…. us…. Like… just me and you…'

'…Yes…. me and you… If you're not… if you don't want…'

' I-I do… I m-mean… I w-want… No… I… Yes! ….It's a yes.'

Seeing the happy looks on both 2B and 9S faces, and the latter's sudden enthusiastic cheering in the air, it looks to A2 that 9S was successful in asking 2B out. And she was happy for the two, feeling proud a bit that they could finally get over their dancing around each other and to finally act on their feelings.

A2 was silently sharing the same feeling of success and relief with her other friends, hiding out of sight of 2B and 9S, seeing their hush cheering and fist pumping in the air from their hiding spot.

A2 had a smile on her face, before remembering that Anemone was also in the room witnessing 9S asking 2B out.

"So…" The field captain gave A2 a knowing look.

"Okay, yes. That's one of the reasons. But would you want to be a third wheel on their date?" A2 questioned to the amused Anemone.

"No. I see your point. I may have a need for some extra hands tomorrow for night patrol. You know, going around the village and watching out for trouble to take care of. I can assign you for a shift if you want?" Anemone offered.

A2 thought of it and found it fine. "Sure. Why not."

"Ah, but you are free to enjoy the festival…. Maybe even met you own date for the night, huh~" Anemone teased.

While A2 snorted. "Yeah, like there'd be someone who'd be brave enough to ask me out."

A2 then looked back at the window and then turned to Anemone. "Hey, this was a nice chat, but I got to go and teased those two love struck idiots for finally graduating from the friend zone."

"Sure, no problem. But go easy on them A2. We still need them to functionally go on a date tomorrow, if want to get our cash in from the betting pool." Anemone replied, reminding A2 as the younger hunter began to leave.

"Roger that!"

Ut just as A2 was about to leave, she paused, wanting to say something to Anemone. "Hey Captain. I meant it when I said it was a nice chat. I think I needed it… so Thanks."

And like that she was out the door, her destination straight towards 2B and 9S, while thinking of all the tease she could get from the two.

Anemone only looks on, wishing that A4 was here to see how much A2 has matured.

Omake

(New arrivals)

A lone caravan made its way through the gates of YoRHa, passing by the guards after a short inspection, like many similar caravans that have arrived in time for YoRHa's founding festival. Though unlike the previous merchants, travelers and tourist who arrived during the day, it was already evening when this caravan reach the outskirts of the village and few people littered the streets, making it an easy drive for its occupants and the Popo pulling their mobile home.

There were two individuals seated at the front, one holding the reins of the Popo and other keeping the first one company. Both marveled at the decorations set up by the village and found that even if it were the evening, they could still feel the festive sort of excitement waiting to be released by tomorrow's time.

One of the individuals, a young youthful looking male possessing dark brownish custard colored hair, couldn't help voicing out his own excitement for the Founding Festival.

"Oh my gosh Weiss. It's so nice we could get to experience YoRHa's Founding Festival again. Can you imagine the food stalls we'll see, the concerts they'll perform—Oh and the games done by the research center this year. Those are always so exciting! You know, I thought they weren't going to celebrate this year because of the mysterious black haze… Wait. Didn't the guild have an official name for it? Black Blot… or Black… it still has Black in its name, right?"

The other individual replied with a male posh voice. "They officially named it the Black Blight, Emil. Apparently, digging deeper in the guild records resulted in discovering the name the ancients used to call the mysterious haze we've been encountering years before… If you ask me, they should have officialize its name sooner before some individuals began to give their own unruly names for this phenomenon."

"You're not wrong Weiss… But you think the guild would accept calling the Black blighted monsters as Shades? Kinda got use to calling them that because Nier kept using that term."

Emil, the now named youthful male, spoke. Turning to look at his companion, Weiss. A unique looking Lynian resembling a felyne but with different features like longer ears and a slender build. His fur was predominantly white but patterned with black stripes that gives off an exotic appearance.

Weiss stared back at Emil with his default look of indifference and bored feline slit eyes. He, surprisingly, is the one holding the reins and driving their Popo, expertly moving through the road despite addressing his companion.

"I wouldn't mind the guild coining the term Shades for the blighted monsters, but I feel 'Shade' is already a term being used for something else and copyrighted… But it would be better than calling every blight monster we hunt a ' $ #$ Mother****er."

"Weiss, language!" Emil chided.

"Apologies. I believe the Hussy is rubbing off on me… urrgghh…" Weiss shuddered at the thought. "How dreadful, that I, the great Grimalkyne Weiss, Lynian from the new world, master of the black lance technique, slayer of the greatest gluttonous, and renowned partner of Nier… am tainted by a foul-mouthed exhibitionist." Wiess deadpanned in a monotoned voice.

"Weiss…" Emil shakes his head at his companion, before changing topics unless a certain someone was listening in and decided to give a piece of her mind to their resident Felyne. "So, you think we'll be able to sell some goods while we're here?"

Weiss pondered for a moment before answering. "It's hard to make an estimation, knowing how busy it is in YoRHa during this time of the year…" He then made a small shrug in reply. "But there are always a multitude of people visiting this village. I'm confident we'll have no shortage of potential customers."

"I'm more worried for the plans of a certain young maiden of ours." Weiss said, with Emil nodding his head in agreement.

"Ahh… Yes. I was surprise that she already made plans for tomorrow even before we've arrived. Aren't you curious who the lucky guy is?"

"Well, I am curious. For as you humans would say, it is part of my nature." Weiss joked, much to Emil delight, before he began addressing some pressing matters. "Though, I rather not pry on our young maiden's date tomorrow but be more concerned of keeping her father unaware that his daughter has been dating a pen-pal, a real pen-pal this time, for nearly a year or so."

Emil couldn't help grimacing and feel a bit worried for tomorrow after hearing Weiss words. "Hopefully Kaine could keep him busy."

"But of course she would! The Hussy may not show it, but for some unknown reason she's actually excited for a change, in going out tomorrow night!" Weiss exclaimed, clearly perturb at one of their traveling companions recent behavior. "Is there bunch of sailors having a cussing match in the stage plays tomorrow? Is she planning to enter like an unexpected challenger and out cuss them all?! I have no doubt she would, but is the prize money really worth it if it's Kaine going all out in a cussing ring? I fear Nier would be too busy watching over her than he would with Yonah, if that's the case."

Emil actually laughed at Weiss's scenario, he could see Kaine out cussing and kicking butt of any sailor who thinks could take on her. "Hahaha… And Kaine says you don't have a sense of humor."

"The Hussy thinks I don't have a lot of things and considers me as a talking textbook, with the amount of superior knowledge I possess." Weiss huff with an air of arrogance. "Might as well let her call me a Grimoire, if she still thinks I perform tribal spells or know how to make mystic potions."

Emil continued to chuckle in amusement.

The two continued to talk and banter, while looking for a spot in YoRHa to park their caravan. Due to arriving in the village much later than the others, it was hard to find a space not taken by another and the duo continued to search despite how late it was.

For a moment, Weiss suddenly paused their cart and began sniffing around, his senses picking up a scent he knows shouldn't be present in the vicinity. Much less in a village.

Emil grew concern, knowing of this behavior of Weiss, but before he could ask what's wrong, someone called out to them.

"Excuse me."

Both Emil and Weiss turned to their left, surprised of suddenly seeing a young male teen at their side, appearing out of nowhere and somehow catching them off guard, much to Weiss's dismay as he considers himself as an unflinching proud warrior.

The young teen catching their attention got closer and Emil was able to see clearer, the appearance of their mysterious individual. Most of the youth's body was covered by a cloak, but his head and face was expose.

His eyes had a turquoise shade, leaning more to a greenish hue and dark hair that has a brown tint when shined by the moon's light.

To Emil, he looked like a regular teenager, with a touch of naivety. But something in his gut told him that there's something more than meets the eyes for this particular boy.

The fact that Weiss eyes were slit and practically scanning the boy like he was threat, was a dead giveaway to Emil that he had to be careful with this lad. If the boy noticed Weiss scrutinizing him, he didn't show he was aware.

Instead the boy asked them a question.

"Uhm. Is it okay if I could ask for directions?" The boy timidly asked, surprising Emil.

"…Ugh?" Admittedly Emil was left gaping his mouth, from the boy's sudden inquiry.

"I was hoping if you know the directions to the guild here?" The boy asked them again, this time Emil knows the boy was just asking directions and was quick to reply, if not to avoid the boy from noticing Weiss continue to stare at him dangerously.

"You just head two streets down and you'll see a main road that leads to it. It's not hard to miss."

"Oh! Thank you! Sorry if I took some of your time." The boy bowed with gratitude.

Emil simply wave his hand in reply. "It's no problem really. You take care of yourself now."

"I will!" The boy said, waving goodbye and following Emil's directions.

Feeling some tension leaving his body, and relief that the boy wasn't what he thought he was, Emil gave a loud sigh as he watch as the boy disappear from his view and no doubt heading to YoRHa's guild safely.

Though, Emil almost forgot that Weiss was with him and turned to his companion asking. "Weiss what was that? Why did you suddenly stop the cart and behave… like you were sizing up the boy?"

Weiss remained silent, still staring at the direction of where the boy left. Until he suddenly let out a breath and hunching his shoulders, as if he also were feeling some tension leave his body.

"Apologies again Emil. But that boy… he's a strange one."

"Strange?"

"I paused because I detected a scent, one I know shouldn't be present in our area unless under certain circumstances. Then that boy arrived, and I detected that the scent was coming from him—Then I suddenly felt my body go into fight or flight mode in response... It was a strange reaction, I admit."

Indeed, Weiss could still feel the hair in his body standing yet not one of his fur was out of place.

"What did the boy smell like?" Emil asked, curious and worried at the same time.

With Weiss being a felyne and coming from what he would usually describe his original home as a death world, Emil knew he was more attuned to detecting danger or at least potential threats to them.

Emil watched as Weiss began to recall, rolling out of his tongue the best words to describe the scent of the boy. "He smelled like… a fresh breeze or a wind blowing through the sky at its highest… Mixed with the smell of ash and soothe."

"Weiss, that sounds like… you think the boy's trouble?" Emil asked, concerned.

But Weiss gave an easy wave of his paw in reassurance, before resuming their drive with their caravan. "I did not sense any malice from the boy, so no need for your concern whether he is a threat or not— My instincts are usually on the spot for this sort of things. But I am perplex of the boy's scent… and why it's similar to a Rathalos…

…A really rare and strong Rathalos."
