Chapter 33

K-Kiss?!

I was making my way to the living room with Piplup, as Ash's mom wanted to have a talk with us. I wondered out loud, "What does she want to say to us?"

Piplup nodded. "Pip."

When I reached the living room, I pushed the door open. I saw Ash's mom sitting on a couch. Everyone else was there too. She looked up to me and motioned me to sit down on a sofa. I nodded as I obeyed her.

I took a seat next to Leaf and May. On the opposite couch, Gary and Drew were sitting. Ash and Serena were standing next to Mrs. Ketchum.

Ash's mom cleared her throat, "Ahem, I called you out here to tell you about the plans for Ash's birthday party tomorrow."

Serena smiled. "Yeah. Guys, the birthday party will begin tomorrow in the evening at seven. It's a masquerade ball."

"What? A masquerade ball?" Leaf whispered. "I'm so excited!"

I wasn't interested whatsoever in the type of party it was. I just wanna make tomorrow a successful mission. Actually, if it had been the me from three days back, I'd be excited as hell.

Ah, well. But not anymore.

For me, life feels like shit for some reason.

Ash's mom nodded. "She's right. Since you all don't have the clothes for the ball. I've ordered some for you all, tuxedos for boys and ball gowns for girls. I'll send some choices to your room and you can choose any one. Oh, I'll send the accessories, too."

I cocked my head to the side, confused. "Um, we are going to wear those?"

"Of course!"

"Um, gowns? I don't think I'd be able to wear that! I mean, they are very difficult to handle and I won't be able to use my legs and arms freely. At some point, we're going to have a fight, right?" I objected. "It's okay if I wear my normal clothes and stand there, just like some bodyguard."

I could see everyone in the room staring at me. May said, "Dawn, you don't have to be so whiny. Since we'll be wearing masks, it'll be difficult for them to identify us. That way, we'll be able to fight them easily."

The older brunette said, "Yes, dear. You should just grab this opportunity, what if you end up finding someone interesting in the crowd? Someone who is likely to be your boyfriend?" She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

"What?" I choked as everyone else began to laugh, with the exception of Ash.

The raven-haired boy just hissed, "Mom, you shouldn't be talking about things like these. Also, that is not the reason why she should be coming for." He turned to me. "You don't have any choice but to attend in a formal gown. Do it for the sake of this mission, no one's forcing you."

He's being an asshole to me again, huh? I wonder why I thought he was treating me special.

I saw everyone having a concerned expression on their faces. I sighed. "I don't have any other choice, do I?"

With Piplup gone with Pikachu to play with the rest of the Pokémon, I headed back to my room only to see that there were a couple of dresses placed on my bed. I sighed. I walked to the bed and saw that there were three gowns and some accessories beside them. There was some jewelry, chokers, and matching pairs of masks with the gowns. Also, a pairs of shoes in a box.

Just then, Leaf barged into my room and I stared at her, confusedly. "Uh, Leaf... you want something?"

She hurried and grabbed my shoulders. "Dawn! I'm gonna help you pick your clothes, alright?"

"Alright, alright. But why? My taste is pretty good, you know?"

She shook her head. "It's not that! I wanna choose a dress for you, that's all!"

I giggled. "Fine, you don't have to be so dramatic about it!"

Leaf observed the gowns and started ruffling them. She picked a specific dress and quickly placed it in front of my body to see whether it suited me or not. She exclaimed, "Perfect!" and hung it in the cupboard.

I just stared at her blankly, unable to understand what she was trying to do. Then, she grabbed me and pushed on a chair. She said, "Let's see about the matching accessories now."

She picked up a choker and hooked it behind my neck. She squinted, examining it. She shook her head, "Nah, this one isn't looking as good as it should."

Suddenly, she got a call, and she ran out of the room, shouting, "I'll be back in a sec! Remove that choker till I return!"

I sighed as I brought my hands to the back of my neck to unhook the choker. I tried to press the hook and remove it from the chain, but no luck. Then, I tried to circle it and bring it to my front of the neck so that my hands wouldn't hurt.

I tried to look at it and unhook it, but couldn't find any success. I threw my hands in the air, frustrated. "Urgh! I can't do it!"

"Need some help?"

I turned around to see Ash leaning on the door with his arms crossed. He was dressed in a white with blue thick horizontal striped t-shirt, which he had folded until his elbow, and honey brown pants. He had put on some normal sneakers with black sole. He also had a watch in his left wrist.

I didn't know why... I could feel a wave of discomfort rush over me. My chest suddenly felt tight and heavy. But, then again... there's no reason for me to be upset.

We're just friends.

Remember, just friends.

I couldn't even avoid him because of the promise I made with Gary.

I guess I should just give up on him and let him continue his life. I didn't have to poke my nose in his business.

Actually... I didn't mind it anymore... It was fine, as long as he decided to treat me the same way as before.

I smiled sheepishly as I said, "Kind of. You see, Leaf was helping me try on the new clothes and she said that she would help me decide. She put this choker on and went away when she received a phone call. She said that she would come back, but... I wanna remove it." I looked at him. "Hey, can you call any maid to unhook this thing?"

He shook his head, amused. "All the maids are busy arranging and cleaning the banquet hall for tomorrow's event. Also, why would I want to waste their time for something as simple as this?" He came forward and stood before me. "Stay still."

I stared at him, confused as to what he was doing.

He stood right in front of me, just a few inches away from my body. That's when I noticed his height... he was maybe two or three inches taller than me! I only reached his jaw!

The next thing I knew, he bent his head down to my neck. I resisted the urge to gasp when I felt his teeth touch my collarbone. I knew that he was trying to unhook it with his teeth but I couldn't help the heat rushing to my cheeks.

Then he brought his hands up and held the metal with his fingers. I could feel his cold fingers lingering on my neck, tickling me slightly and sending a chill down my spine. His hair was just inches away from touching my chin.

I could feel myself getting lost in his strong cologne. His presence was quite... intoxicating. I could even smell the shampoo in his hair... It was a surprise that I was able to stand on my feet for this long!

I could still feel the sensation of his fingertips on my collarbone. My breath hitched when I felt his lips brush on my exposed skin. My heart began to race as fast as a ponyta racing on a track!

Ash, please get away... if you continue any longer, then who knows... I might pass out!

The moment when he stepped away, I released the breath which I had been holding. I put a hand over my heart to calm it down.

"Here, hold this." I looked up to see him holding the choker in his hand. That's when I realised that he was removing the cloth from my neck.

I held my hand forward. "O-oh, thanks!" He placed it in my palm and I shivered when his fingers brushed over it. I blushed even harder.

"You were asking me to call a maid for something like this. See, I did it for you, didn't I?" He smiled at me.

It'd have been a lot better if a maid came here instead... I wouldn't have had to go through all these emotions once again.

Nonetheless, I returned the smile as I said, "Yeah. Anyway, why were you here?"

"I was just passing by and then I saw you trying to pull that thing off like a caged wild Pokémon. So, I decided to check up on what you were doing," he replied, crossing his arms again.

"Oh! Thanks again." I rubbed the back of my head, embarrassed. Did I look really like a caged wild Pokémon?

"I'm back!"

We turned our heads to see Leaf standing in the doorway as she eyed Ash and me. She raised an eyebrow. "Ash, what are you doing here?"

He shrugged as he put his hands in his pockets. "Just helping her out." He casually walked out of the room.

Leaf turned her head to me. "Mind giving me the details?"

"Nothing. He was helping me unhook this choker. That's all," I answered. Why are they all so fixated at giving me wrong ideas about our relationship?! I mean, why would they try to ship me with him when he's already in a relationship?! Even now, she's going to tease me about it? I felt slightly pissed, for some reason.

She nodded, but was still looking at me doubtfully, "Alright. Let's see what accessories suit your dress."

It was the first time... I fell in love with someone. I sighed longingly. Looks like it was all in vain, huh? Turns out he has a bride already.

I stared out of the window with an upset smile. It was just yesterday when I was feeling too giddy and happy about my first love, like a teenager. And... today, everything feels depressing. I don't even feel like eating chocolate.

I could see Gary and Leaf strolling in the garden, holding hands while laughing. I couldn't help the frown on my face. It was all these guys' fault in the first place! Why would they just keep pushing me to Ash's side and tease me by putting me together with him?! Why would that freaking Gary dare Ash to kiss me?! Even if it was a promise to hide his engagement, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, right?! Why would he ask an engaged person to kiss some girl?!

I bit my lips as my heart sank, trying to stop my tears from falling from my eyes. "If Gary and Drew knew about this, then why did they keep pestering me about our relationship?! My feelings?! Why did they keep forcing me?! And May was aware about it, wasn't she? Then... why wouldn't she alert me or give me a heads up about it?!" I questioned myself, taking out my frustration.

I noticed Ash and Serena join Leaf and Gary. Somehow, Ash was taking out something from her hair. I couldn't continue watching it anymore. I quickly drew the curtains and jumped on my bed, laying flat on my belly.

I didn't plan for any of this!

I couldn't help the hot tears falling across my face. "I-I... hate you, Ash Ketchum! I hate you! Waaaah!" I sniffed. "Please, m-make me hate for you real! I don't want to l-like you anymore!"

"Now, I know why mom and dad restricted me!" I whispered, shutting my eyes. "Love sucks... w-when the person you love doesn't love you back! I don't wanna face Ash! Uwaaaaaah!" My heart was sinking as soon as the memories of Ash flashed my mind.

His smile, his frown, his annoyed glare, his angry shrug, his irritated smile, his sheepish grin, his soft laughter, his embarrassed looks, his cute blush, his worried glances, his comforting gaze... I didn't want to remember any of them!

"Just why?!" I yelled as I hiccuped. "Just why were you making it seem like... I was special to you? I was someone more than your just friend... I-I hate you! I-I don't wanna see you... again anymore!"

Everyone around me is to be blamed! They encouraged my feelings as if it were something great! When it was going to be some... shitty unrequited love! Whether it be his parents wish or not... I still don't want to steal a woman's husband-to-be, no matter how strong my feelings are!

I cried, louder. I had been holding back because I didn't know what to do. I had been wanting to cry ever since I knew that my love would never be returned. The more everyone kept asking me if I was okay, the more I felt like I was breaking. I don't want anyone to sympathise with me, even if they aren't.

I just didn't want to see anyone.

Not even Piplup.

I wanted to be by myself. Cry myself to death.

If I knew falling in love would cause me such sufferings, then I'd rather stay away from it.

If you ask me to jump down a mountain, I wouldn't be scared but.. liking someone seems much dangerous and frightening.

"Mom, Dad, I wanna go home," she muttered. "Please, I don't want to stay here, anymore. I feel... suffocated, breathing the same air as him and his wife."

"... I wanna disappear."

After crying for another hour, I fell asleep, and just now woke up just a few minutes ago. I washed my face thoroughly with water, because that was the last time I would cry for Ash Ketchum.

I had decided to officially shut down my feelings for him. "Crying really makes me feel better," I muttered to myself. After leaving here, when our mission was successful, we wouldn't be seeing each other anyway, since he was officially a cop from Kanto.

What were the chances of me meeting him after this?

I felt a lot better since yesterday. It feels like this trip taught me a lot of things. I experienced my first love and it was crushed in just two days, hahaha. Well, no worries. I realised how scary the emotion is. I could let go of it, maybe.

Damn, I was proud of myself.

Now, I know how it feels to have a heartbreak. And I'm sure it would definitely help me in my future relationships.

With this, maybe... maybe just a bit, I had matured?

I hoped so.

"Piplup!"

"Coming!" For some reason, I couldn't shake off the proud smile from my face.

I had gone to the backyard of the villa along with Piplup. "Hey, it'll be good to have a stroll, right?" I pumped up my fist.

My penguin Pokémon was held in my arms. He nodded. "Pip!"

I walked around and saw that Aiden was sitting on a chair with a Shinx next to him. He looked a bit... distressed? He was dressed in a blue and white striped T-shirt with light brown coloured shorts. He had a cap over his hair, just like Ash.

"What's wrong with him?"

"Pip-lup," he said, telling me to check up on him.

I nodded as I ran to him and waved. "Hey, Aiden! Watcha' doing?!"

"Pip!" Piplup greeted him with a smile.

He looked up to me and then turned away his gaze. "What are you doing, here? Do you need something?" he asked plainly.

I grinned. "Nope, nothing. I just saw you upset, so I decided to talk to you about it." I kneeled down to be eye level with him. "So, tell me. Why are you upset? Is something bothering you?"

He crossed his arms. "It's none of your business."

"You're as rude as your brother, aren't you?" I muttered. He glared at me when I said that. I said, changing the topic, "Uh, okay, okay. If you don't want to tell me then, it's alright." We can't force people to let out their feelings, can we?

I got up to leave, but I felt a small hold on my wrist. I turned around to see Aiden holding my arm. His cheeks were tinted red, and he was looking the other way.

I sighed with a smile. He seemed just like Ash... trying to hide his emotions behind their tough facade...

I shook my head and kneeled down once again. I said, while ruffling his hair, "You can talk to me."

The young raven-haired boy started, "It's just that... It's my brother. He is always perfect at everything! My mom and dad both love him! I love him, too! But... he doesn't spare time for me! However much I try to impress him by learning new tricks... he always says two or three words and walks away!"

"It means that you have a complaint against Ash, huh?" I inquired.

He nodded. "Yeah! He never spends much time with me! Also, ever since he got engaged with Serena... she never leaves him alone! Whenever I see him... she's always with him! And when I ask her to let him spend some time with me, Ash says that he doesn't have time to waste!"

I said, "Hey, he did the wrong thing!" I stood up along with Aiden. "By the way, why were you so upset just now? Did he do something again?"

"Yeah!" He pouted. "I went to Ash to ask him to train with me,but he waved me off by saying that he is busy with all the preparations! He also said that I should just go and play with you since you're the most immature one out of all the adults!"

What. He didn't have to say all those things to him! That jerk!

I frowned. "Aw, that's too rude! He refused to spend time with such a cute brother?! That's so mean!"

"Don't call me cute," he blurted instantly.

"Alright, sorry!" I held my ears.

Aiden nodded as he got up with his hands in his pockets. "Fine, then. I'll keep going. I just wanted to let my frustration out by talking it to someone."

I saw him walk away with a sad expression, sighing softly. "Aw, he looks so upset! Dude, Ash is just too rude!" I said as I frowned.

"Piplup!" Piplup nodded.

I thought, "We'll just have to do something about this problem."

"Pip...," the water type said.

I ran inside to search for Ash. On the way, I saw Gary and Leaf talking. So, I decided to ask them, "Hey, guys! Did you see Ash, anywhere? Or where he is?"

Piplup asked, "Lup?"

Gary shook his head. "I don't think I saw him."

I turned to Leaf with hopeful eyes. She thought about it and she said, "I guess I saw him in the main hall, supervising the arrangements."

"Thanks!" I yelled as I dashed away. I climbed down the stairs and when I finally reached the hall, I surveyed for Ash in this large bunch of people, arranging the tables and chairs. When I found him, I rushed to his side.

In the end, I'm the one to blame my feelings. I can't stay mad at Ash for long, when we are stuck together.

I panted, "A... Ash... I... have... something... to talk... about... with... you!"

I need to keep my grudge aside and try to live some happy days, right?

My Pokémon nodded. "Pip!" When he saw Pikachu helping others, he jumped down to meet up with him.

Ash didn't glance at me; he was just staring at the notepad in his hand. "Sorry, but I'm busy. I don't have a single minute to waste." He was wearing the same outfit, which he wore in the morning.

Suddenly, an idea struck in my mind. "Hey! Do you need some help?"

He shook his head. "Help coming from you? I'd rather do it myself than have you help me."

I clasped my hands together. "C'mon, pretty please! I really need some of your time! Please, please!"

"What did you say? You want to spend some time with me?" He turned around completely with an eyebrow raised. If I looked carefully, I could see a small amount of excitement and happiness in his eyes.

Ugh, Dawn! Why would he be happy?! Stop with your wishful thinking!

I shrugged it off as I nodded. "It's a secret! Will you let me help?"

"Sure, if you insist," he said. He unpinned a paper and handed it to me. "Here. This is a list of things which are to be done. You should check up on these and tick it, if it's done. If not, then you should ask the men to do it."

I grinned. "Alright!"

"Man, I can't believe it took two hours to be completed!" I exclaimed. It was almost noon and we were out in the garden.

Ash nodded. "Hm."

I asked him, "Is everything done? I mean, is the entire decoration over?"

He shook his head. "No. The rest of it should be done tomorrow morning, after discussing it with dad."

"Oh, okay!" I folded my arms behind my back. "Hey, if you need some help tomorrow also, then you can ask me! I'm always ready!" Piplup and Pikachu were still in, playing with the rest of the Pokémon.

He chuckled. "Sure." Then, he asked, "Um... why did you need some time with me?"

I smiled. "Just wait, I'll tell you!" I walked ahead and saw that Aiden was standing in the backyard with his hands in his pocket.

Ash was walking a little behind me as I ran to him. "Hey, Aiden!"

He turned to me. "What?"

Just then, Ash matched his pace with mine. "Tell me, already. Why did you bring me here? I-" he stopped himself when he saw the younger Ketchum. "Aiden?"

"Brother Ash?" He cocked his head to the side, confused. "But, weren't you busy in the preparations for tomorrow's event?"

Ash nodded, "Yeah, I was. But this blueberry helped me finish it early."

That's when I decided to step in. "So, here is where I have something to say. Actually, I was the one who set this thing up. I was the one who called Aiden here... so that he would get to spend some time with you."

Ash raised an eyebrow. "Explain properly, will you?"

I placed my hands on my hip. "Listen, Ash. You were being an extremely irresponsible brother! Whenever Aiden asks you to play with him, you just decline his request and walk away! He just wants to learn some things from you but... you being an idiot, didn't give it a thought! Also, you just return home for some days and then go back to work without even understanding your brother's feelings and emotions! You hardly stay for a week, so in those days... you should at least give Aiden your three days!"

I took a deep breath before adding, "I know, it's not my place to be telling you all this... but, I understand. I don't have a sibling... so, I should be able to know how it feels! It's all too lonely! But even after having a brother and not being able to play with him... is just too cruel!"

"Alright, alright. I understand," Ash said, annoyed. He crouched on the floor and ruffled his younger brother's hair. He smiled. "I'm sorry, Aiden. I swear, that I'll make out some time for you and teach you all the things I know."

He brightened up. "Really?!" Ash nodded. "Ah, I'm so excited!" He jumped on him and embraced him, tightly.

I stared at the scene with an awestruck expression. It feels like some reunion! I smiled as I turned around to leave. Just then, I felt a tug at my jeans. I looked down to see Aiden holding my jeans. "Thanks a million, Dawn!" He grinned.

I crouched on the ground and pulled his cheeks lightly. "Aw, you're welcome!"

He smiled at me as he wrapped his arms around me. I was surprised at first but hugged him back. When he pulled away, he kissed my cheek.

I held the place where he pecked me; my eyes drooped in ecstasy. I squealed, "Aw, this was the first time a small boy hugged and kissed me! I'm in pure bliss!"

Ash raised an eyebrow. "Shane kissed and hugged you before, didn't he?"

"Uh, yeah. But still! I love being the favourite of kids!" I said as I stuck out my tongue at him. I turned to the young boy. "Hey, do you regard me as an elder sister now?"

He nodded. "Yeah! Sure!"

"Yay!" I cheered. "I'm so so happy!" I shrieked in joy.

Aiden said, "Dawn, if you are my elder sister and Ash is my elder brother, then practically you both are brother and sister, too!"

What.

We both stood up in shock and denied, simultaneously, "Never!"

We crossed our arms and stared at each other. Then, we turned our heads away as we blushed at how quickly we reacted. I stuttered, "Uh... um... no! I don't want a brother like him! Never ever!"

Ash agreed, "Yeah. I'd never want a whiny and immature sister like her."

"Okay, relax!" Aiden laughed as he whispered something in Ash's ear, making him a bit embarrassed and pull the young boy's ear.

I saw them both playing with each other and took this chance to sneak away. I smiled cheekily and stepped into the porch.

"Thanks a lot, Dawn."

I turned around to see Ash's mother sitting on one of the chairs on the porch. I scrunched my eyebrows, confused, "Um... for what?"

"For helping out those two." She smiled at me.

I grinned. "I just helped my younger brother! Nothing special!"

She laughed. "Yeah, right. Do you know that I'm impressed with you?"

"Uh... really?" I asked sheepishly. She's really asking me questions which I never ever heard! Heck, not even in my exams!

"Yes," she said. "You know, if I could, then I'd be more than happy to have you as a member of my family." She flashed a smile at me and walked in.

I stood there, holding a confused expression.

Huh? What?

What did... she mean by that?

We were all gathered in Leaf's room to listen to what Jerry wanted to inform us about. May, Leaf, and I were seated on the bed while Ash, Gary, and Drew were seated on the couch.

"Is everyone here?" the holographic image of Jerry asked.

We all nodded. "Yeah!"

"So, I wanted to inform you all about the information we found from that single piece of paper," he started. "It was written with invisible ink;' it was a type of steganography. They wanted to conceal that information from all of us."

"Alright, so what does it say?" Gary asked.

"It's the last piece of information we needed. The only method to prevent them conquering the world."

Drew furrowed her eyebrows. "You mean, the only way to prevent it?"

Jerry pointed on a projector. "Yes. It said that if the ritual is broken in the middle, when the energy is being gathered around Celebi and transferring it into the other four statues. The statue of Celebi should be removed from its place, then all the energies will be interrupted and the portal will be closed."

Leaf said, "It's pretty simple. We just have to lift it from its place!"

"It's not as simple as you think it is. The magnetic forces around the statues will be very strong, a simple human being won't be able to lift even an inch from it's position. It requires a lot of strength," the old man said.

"Oh, okay. But, if we prevent them from stealing the statue, tomorrow... then we won't need to face all those difficulties, right?" May shrugged.

I nodded. "Yeah. Besides, we still have the statue of Dialga in the custody of SBI."

Ash said, "We'll have to be extra alert tomorrow. We simply cannot let them get away with the statue."

"Yes. I hope you all do your best and achieve success. All the best! I have faith in you all!" Jerry said as he disconnected the call.

Gary questioned, "Ash, have you checked the security system on the statue?"

He nodded. "Yeah. I did, but I'll check it once more. And yeah, I want you to confirm it. So come to my room tomorrow morning."

"Alright."

Drew said, "Team Cosmic might come in disguise, so we'll have to be very alert of our surroundings."

"It's not that simple, though. We're inviting only the special guests. Also, the guests should show their invitation cards and then, they'll be able to enter. Their bodies will be getting scanned, too," Ash informed.

I turned to him. "They won't give up that quickly. They'll try whatever methods they can to enter the party tomorrow. So, we should be careful."

"Yeah."

I was walking to Ash's room to return his cap, which he had left at Leaf's room. She asked me to give it to him, since she was sleepy. Also, his room was on the way to my room, so I thought I could hand him and go to my room.

It was nine at night. Piplup had already gone to sleep in our room. I saw his door was slightly open, so I pushed it open.

"Hey, Ash! You left-" I cut myself off after seeing the view in front of me. My eyes widened as large as saucers, dropping the cap, in the process.

Ash and Serena were lip-locked. She had her arms around his neck, but Ash wasn't in contact with her, except for his lips. Serena had her eyes closed but Ash's eyes were wide open. When they heard me, they quickly pulled away with wide eyes, just like me.

"I... I... I'm sorry! I didn't mean to interrupt your... moment!" I blurted out and quickly shut my eyes. I walked out of the door and shut it, behind me.

I quickly ran back to my room. After entering, I banged the door, leaning my back on the door. I slapped a hand over my eyes, in guilt. I cursed, "Shit!"

I took a deep breath. I knew that I liked him and I was sure that I was over him... but seeing him kiss her... made my heart shatter. A wave of sadness, betrayal, and frustration washed over me.

Even if they did kiss, but... why did I have to see them do that?!

The kissing scene kept repeating in my mind... I couldn't think of anything else... I thought I was over him but... my heart has started to ache once again.

I sighed in despair.

"...Why did I even fall for him?"
