Chapter 32: Blake

Vollu's laughter broke the silence that was left by Blake's claim.

"The Divine Overdrive?" The man cackled. "Don't make me laugh! You're so close to getting your life back. You wouldn't dare."

"Divine Overdrive?" Rin looked to Blake in confusion. "What's he talking about?"

Vollu cackled louder. "Yes, Ryan, why don't you tell her about it. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to know."

Blake looked over into Rin's eyes. They held nothing but concern. Her eyes told him she knew what he was about to say and that he couldn't lie to her.

The diviner sighed. "The Divine Overdrive is a technique that grants a tarot mage unrivaled power and potential."

"But there's a catch, isn't there?" Rin asked. She knew there was.

Blake looked away. "It grants unrivaled power by condensing the user's mana from the past, present, and future, all into a short period of time. During that time, The user becomes virtually unrivaled, but it comes at the cost of their magic circuits and possibly their life."

Rin's eyes went wide. "No." Anger flooded on to her face and she gripped his sleeve. "No! There is no way in hell that you are leaving me again!" Tears welled in her eyes but the anger remained. "Like it or not, you are stuck with me! I won't let you leave me again!"

Blake smiled wryly at her as he embraced her. "Is that worry I detect for me? Don't worry. I don't plan on dying here."

"You idiot! There's no way I'm letting you do that! Even if there was a ten percent chance of you dying, I wouldn't want you to take it!"

"Then I'm sorry," Blake sighed as he found what he was looking for. He wanted to not have to use it. He wanted to stay with her forever, but if he didn't activate the divine overdrive, she would be killed.

The diviner reached into her gem pouch and quickly moved to crush a gem in front of Rin's face. A bright light went off and the girl locked up, falling to the floor.

Blake caught her before she landed and set her down gently.

She looked up at him with hurt in her eyes. He had used a paralysis gem on her. She couldn't move, but she could speak.

"Why?!" she cried out as he began to walk towards Vollu. "Why would you do this?!"

Blake looked back and smiled sadly. "Because I can't stand to see you die again."

With that, he turned around and called upon his deck.

"Stop!" Rin cried out. "Please! Don't do this!"

A white glow began to surround the diviner as his cards began to spin around him in a spiraling motion.

"Sorry to keep you waiting, Vollu," Blake said grimly. "Now you have my full attention."

Vollu's eyes went wide. "You can't be serious...you're actually going to do it? The divine overdrive?! All to protect this girl? You'd never do that! You don't care about anyone like that!"

The light around Blake began to brighten and his eyes began to glow white. White electricity crackled about his body, and began to tear up the earth. His cards started to disintegrate.

"You just got your life back!" Vollu shouted in disbelief. "And you would throw it away so carelessly?!"

Blake's cards completely faded and the power surrounding him amplified to another level. The white electricity was constant now and the pressure around him was so great that loose gravel created by the electricity had begun to rise from the ground.

"That's because my life was made to give for the people I love."

"You're a fool!" Vollu shouted.

"It's time, Vollu," Blake glared. The man took a final deep breath. He was committed to his choice now.

"Divine-"

A white lightning bolt crashed down between the two diviner's and sent both of them flying. The white light that had been forming around Blake faded and his cards returned to normal as they went back into deck formation.

As the smoke cleared, the younger diviner could make out a set of white flowing robes and long silver hair.

The man's eyes went wide.

It was his master.

"Master?!" Blake shouted in shock as he staggered to his feet.

Integra sent a blast of low powered magic into Blake's stomach, knocking the wind out of him.

The man doubled over and went to his knees.

"What on earth did you think you were about to do?" His master interrogated.

"I was going to take him out in one blow!" Blake groaned angrily.

"At the cost of your life?! You need to stop sacrificing yourself so carelessly." Integra scolded without taking her eyes off of Vollu. "Why do you always fight to die?"

"Because what right do I have to live over anyone else!" Blake coughed.

"Oh, my dear pupil, you are so wrong." Integra sighed in sadness. "You have the same right as anyone else. Instead of fighting to die, you should fight to live. Don't die for the people you love. Live for them."

Blake fell silent. All of his actions until that point flooded to the front of his mind. His motivations to fight. His readiness to die. Had he really been so wrong. Had his reasons for fighting been so twisted. He always thought that fighting was to sacrifice for others, but was it flipped. Was it to fight so that he could be there for others?

"Though you were correct to assess that nothing but the Divine overdrive could defeat Vollu in your case, at this point, I have something that might be able take him down."

"What are you-" Blake began.

Integra, looked over her shoulder and gave him a thumbs up. She then looked back to Vollu and approached him.

Blake's eyes went wide. She was going to use it! She was going to use her-

"Vollu, don't ever touch my pupil again," she said in a deathly calm voice.

She held out her deck and golden mana surged around her.

"Mastery Form: Divine Priestess."
