Whew. Long and busy weekend is finally over with. One of these days I will learn to relax…hopefully…
By the time he returned to the bullpen, Mike found his partner pacing the length of the office like a caged lion. With his hands in the pockets of his black slacks as he circled the Teledex like a fresh kill; the young Inspector was utterly unaware of the confused and mildly annoyed glances he received from the other Inspectors.
Smiling, the Lieutenant bridged the short distance to the stubborn machine and tapped his agitated partner on the shoulder, before pointing at his office.
"You're starting to wear grooves in the floor, Buddy Boy."
"Well, that took a lot longer than I expected…", Steve's face lit up instantly when he looked over at his partner, a devious grin playing on his lips, "I almost came down to check on things…"
"You are imagining things again, my friend. It must be those drugs still in your system…", Mike countered knowingly, as the machine came to life.
"You know what they say about lying in the bible.", Steve tried, only to earn himself a scorning glance.
"Ironic that this comes from the guy who hasn't touched one for more than a handful of times his entire life…", Mike countered and pointed at his door when the Teledex spit out a piece of paper Steve had fretfully been waiting on, "Here, let's meet in my office for a second."
"I take it you got some answers from Nancy?"
Following him into the office, Steve straightened out the tie against his blue plaid dress-shirt, before leaning up against his desk and running his fingers across the paperwork in nervous agitation.
"Yes, I think we're closing in on our guys finally. Nancy was able to isolate the drug our killer used.", Mike explained but hesitated when his partner fidgeted impatiently, obviously ready to share some information as well.
"It wouldn't by chance be Phencyclidine, would it?"
"How did you know?"
Growing increasingly intrigued, Mike leaned back in his chair and crossed his hands behind his head, as he watched his partner resume the nervous pacing in the confines of his office.
"It's a long story, so bear with me. Lt. Woods and I spent some time narrowing down the list of mob families he knew were affected by the murders in New York, as well as those that split up or left town altogether. We came up with five of them.", taking a second to catch his breath, Steve held up his free hand to count off the names, "Both, the Rossi and Altieri families were heavily affected by the murder spree, losing half a dozen members in each family. The only ones left alive were the women. Lieutenant Woods feels that this has devastated the families so much that a reemergence in the organized crime scene is highly unlikely, even if they were to try and recruit more members from Italy."
"How many murders are we talking total? The report earlier only listed four."
Mike had gotten up from his chair to grab a cup of coffee, his eyes remaining glued on his partner.
"I was hoping you'd ask that. 17 total. 15 of them NYPD guessed were intentional killings, the other two were bodyguards that got in the way, probably just like our floater trying to protect Gino."
"Mhm."
Mike didn't like those figures one bit. The sheer thought that their five murders might only be the tip of the iceberg when it came to their own killing spree made his stomach churn. Holding the coffee pot in one hand and his cup in the other, he hesitated for a moment, while his mind continued to put the pieces together.
"And they were never able to apprehend our suspect?"
Steve shook his head and let his green eyes drift over the paperwork in his hand, before glancing back up.
"Nope. All they have is a witness who saw him leave a murder scene and that's how they got the sketch drawing. I advised Lt. Woods to put him into protective custody until this is all over with, considering what happened to our witness."
Nodding in agreement, Mike sat down at the edge of his desk and took a sip of fresh coffee before clearing his throat.
"You said there are five families involved. Who else was affected?"
"You're going to like this one.", Steve teased with a broad grin, "The Zaputto's, the Ngyuen's and the Scalino's."
