Author's Note: Welcome back. Thanks for the reviews. I don't say it often enough, but they keep me going. Also, I'm open to constructive criticism. How else am I going to get better?

Anyway, enjoy the chapter and don't hate me.

The Way Forward - Chapter 33: A Cat Named Li

.

Thursday, July 14:

Mid-morning, Ranka's:

"Overall, it went well, Morinozuka-sama."

"Yes, the disco performed perfectly. No issues with lighting or the lasers."

I nodded while looking at my notes. My three managers and I were reviewing last night and making any changes necessary for the opening tomorrow. It sounds cliché, but I can't believe it's here already.

"The bars had no issues, though we won't have a full test until opening."

"We're fully stocked?" I asked. "And all permits are finalized?" I knew the answers. Permits were granted months ago, but I will go through my entire checklist.

"Yes."

"Kitchen?"

Lewis-san, my kitchen manager looked up from his notes. "Functioned well. The line cooks and chef have made some changes based on last night. It will be even smoother tomorrow." He hesitated, then said, "I think we need more servers on staff. It was pretty hectic."

"I thought we had enough."

"We have what tends to work for this amount of tables, but with the show people will be ordering more and intermittently. More staff will allow for seamless serving."

"Alright. As many as you need and is still reasonable."

"Thank you, Morinozuka-sama. Four more per dinner shift."

"Hn."

I turned to Megu-chan, and she gave her report. "The show went amazingly. We've been practicing without an audience for a while, so most of the kinks were ironed out already. We rearranged the costumes again. I think we have it right this time."

"Anything you need, let Fukuda-san know." I gave Megu-chan full authority over the stage and performers. Who better to oversee them?

The overall club manager, Fukuda-san, turned to me and asked if the guests said anything concerning.

"Everyone was satisfied with dinner. It was delicious." I turned a page to look at my list. "One guest said the men's restroom smelled of harsh chemicals. That needs to be addressed."

"They were cleaned just before arrival. We'll clean them sooner, so they have time to air out before the club opens."

I went through several other smaller items before my last concern. This one was from Kasanoda. "I received comments about the cages in the disco."

"From what I saw, everyone loved them. I know the ladies had fun, and some of the female guests even got in them."

"Yes. I saw the same. However, one of the guests had a horrible reaction to them. Seeing women in cages triggered some issues for her."

"Oh." Megu-chan sat thinking for a few minutes. "I suppose I can understand that, even if they are obvious willing participants here."

"Suggestions?"

Fukuda-san had the solution. "We'll leave the structure there, but cut off the top part, leaving a fence around the platform. That way no one will fall off, but they won't be caged in."

"Hn. Get it done and reinspected if necessary. It needs to be perfect by tomorrow night." I closed my tablet and stood. "Text me pictures when it's done."

After Classes, Hitachiin Studios:

"Perfect."

The camera clicked as Fujioka-sama smiled. It's a great shot. She's got her back to her desk and is leaning up against it, almost sitting on it. Her ankles are crossed in front of her, and she's holding the phone to her ear. The pants flatter her legs without making her look short.

I couldn't have created a better job for me than this. Hitachiin Kaoru's assistant for his 'Every Woman' line. And I'm good at it. And he knows it based on my bonuses. My father thought that the only jobs in fashion for women were sewing and modeling. He knows better now and is proud of my accomplishments.

"Now, hang up the phone and pick up the tablet. Stay in that pose. Not sure which prop will work best."

More clicking.

Saturday was insane. We're all lucky it wasn't worse. I was in the wardrobe trailer when it happened and was smart enough to stay right there. Fujioka-sama looks good today. None of the bruises are showing, and she's not limping. Her knee must not be bothering her.

Kaoru-sama directed her off for a wardrobe change and walked up to me.

"How does it look, Mao?"

"Excellent. Between Saturday and today, there will be more than enough to work with for a while. At least two ad campaigns."

"That's the goal." He glanced at me and then back at the set. "Is the surprise here?"

"In the green room."

"I hope she's not angry." His voice waivered a tiny bit.

"I don't think she will be. She's learned a lot about how these things work."

He heaved a sigh. "I suppose."

Melonbooks, Akihabara:

This is crazy. When I heard about this manga shop, I had to try it. They're famous for dojin manga.

Not sure anyone would believe this, but I'm a bigger Otaku than Renge. I just keep it quiet. None of them know I read or write fan fiction. That 'Vampire Knight' story already has almost fifty followers, most in America. Writing it in English was a good idea. I'm even getting help from one who volunteered to be my Beta.

I usually just order the mangas that I want, but how am I ever going to discover new ones that way. Coming out to the store lets me brose through all of them. I'll need some to read next week on the beach.

The first store today had all the big names. I picked up several complete sets that sounded interesting. Something about tennis and one about Go. We'll see. They had a special edition of 'Death Note' which I just had to get too.

"What is this?"

I reached and pulled out a self-published manga called 'Parisian High School Host Club'.

After Classes, Hitachiin Studios:

"Haruhi, I have a surprise for you!"

Oh, great. That tone. That face. If that was Hikaru, I'd turn and run, but Kaoru isn't as… Isn't as what? Tricky? Mean? Selfish? All of the above?

"What?" I just stood there, arms crossed in front of me, staring.

"You'll be modeling with a partner in this next set of pictures."

"I've had other people in several pictures so far today."

"But this one's special."

"Whatever." No matter who it is, I won't be able to talk him out of it. Besides, it's my job. Why? Oh, yeah. Thanks, Dad.

"Mommy! There she is!"

I looked up and saw that little boy from Saturday. What was his name?

Then he slammed into my legs.

I smiled down at him. "Hi, Ginji."

What has Kaoru done now?

.

"And a little to the left, please."

Then the little kid reached up and grabbed Haruhi's nose. Perfect.

She wasn't angry about the kid, just a little that I kept it a surprise. Though I'm not sure why she wasn't expecting it. I did the same thing with that girl from the red carpet. Blew up everyone's Twitter. This will too. And little Ginji gets a big boost for his college fund.

"Now, if Ginji could get up on the man's shoulders…"

I have them modeling as a family with a commoner male model. Both the parents are wearing suits and carrying briefcases, like they're going home from work after picking up their kid from wherever.

"Fujioka-sama, if you could loop your hand through his arm…"

Looks good.

Then the kid bent down and started eating the guy's hair.

Haninozuka Jet:

"Alright, guys, listen up!" All eyes landed on our team coach. "This is the last world cup before the Olympics. After the finals Saturday, the Japanese Karate Olympic team will be finalized!"

We all cheered at that. Some because the team would be announced, and some because the season will finally be over. It's been a long one.

"I want everyone to go out there and do their best. Fight for every point and leave nothing behind!"

More cheering. As #1 in the world, I'm guaranteed a spot, but two spots on the Japanese team depend on this world cup.

"Hey, Chika?"

"Yeah."

"You ready for this?"

"Definitely."

"Good. Cause I'm going to kick your ass."

"Bring it."

Dinner, Watanabe Spa:

"Isn't the sand going to ruin all this work?"

"Haruhi, Haruhi, Haruhi." I shook my head at her. "We must look good. Besides, we can get it touched up while we're there."

"What color would you like, Fujioka-sama?"

"Ooo, get pink!" Cho called from her chair.

"No, red." That was Yuki.

"Black." Only Shinobu.

"Actually, I'm having a Petto Chinmi photo shoot on Sunday. What would look good with that?"

"Won't your stylists do that then?"

"What!?" I watched as it sunk in. "You mean I have to go through this again Sunday? Why am I even here now?"

"It's girls' day, Silly. Don't you want to be here with us?" Cho's pouting.

Maybe I can help Haruhi out. "You'll need them done for Saturday."

"What's Saturday, Haruhi?"

She gave me a glare, "Thanks, Renge." Looking back at the others. "Nothing. Just a trip to Nagoya to visit some friends."

I forgot she didn't want them to know. Fortunately, they're all used to Haruhi keeping things to herself, so they didn't push.

"How about a nice taupe, Fujioka-san?"

"Alright," she sighed. "I guess that's fine." She picked one that looked like someone had put too much cream in their coffee. It's very much her.

.

"Stop fidgeting."

"How can you even sit?"

We just had our bikini waxes and were eating a late dinner. Good thing we had snacks during those pedicures. I thought we were eating first.

"It takes practice. Just follow the aftercare instructions and you'll be fine." I tried not to shift around much myself. It's worth it for the look I'll get from Ritsu in my new string bikini. Too bad I couldn't find one in leather I liked.

One of the servers got Haruhi a pillow. "Thank you." She sat down gently. "Better."

"How have you never had a bikini wax before?" Renge took a sip of her tea and looked around. "We've seen you in a swimsuit."

"I shaved, but just the parts the suit didn't cover." Haruhi shifted slightly again. "Having everything ripped out never occurred to me." Now, that's some sass.

"You'll get used to it," Renge said. "It does get easier."

"Whatever." She popped a fancy tuna in her mouth and chewed. I bet she thinks she'll never have another one. She swallowed and proved me right. "I'm never doing that again."

Renge gave her an odd look. "We'll see."

Dinner was really good, but I need to get back home. Maybe I can move this along. "Are we still on for shopping tomorrow?"

"Definitely." Cho was bouncing in her seat. Obviously, the wax didn't affect her that much. "I need so many things…bikini, beach coverup, sunglasses, new sandals…"

"I need new casual outfits. Something cute and fun, but easy."

"And loungewear."

"And some cute pajamas."

"I'm fine. You all have fun without me." We all stared at Haruhi. I guess I can understand not having fun shopping when you can't get whatever you want and have to watch the prices, but she doesn't have that problem now.

"Oh, hell no. You're coming." Oops. Didn't mean to make her shrink back in her seat. I wasn't that mean, was I? "It wouldn't be girls' day without you. Besides," I grinned, knowing my audience, "there's a bookstore in the same mall."

I winked at Renge when Haruhi gave in. "Fine, but I don't need to buy anything. I'll just watch."

Sure, you will…

Friday, July 15:

Breakfast, Café near Petto Chinmi:

"Everything's ready for Sunday. The head gardener gave our director a tour and they planned the settings. Everyone from the agency will arrive at nine Sunday morning to begin setup. The animals will arrive at eleven. Once they get there, shooting can start." I leaned back and took a breath. "Any questions?"

"No," she shook her head. "Sounds like everything is covered."

"It is. Don't worry. We'll try to minimize the impact to the estate as much as possible."

"About that," she started pulling on her earring. I wonder what's wrong. "You might have an audience."

"Really?"

"Yes. The Morinozuka's all want to watch."

Oh. "That's not a problem. I'm sure they won't interfere at all."

"Are you sure? Maybe the director won't want them there."

Ah, now I get it. She's nervous and embarrassed. "Fujioka-sama, I'm sure the director won't mind, but if you'd rather they not be there, he could explain that to them."

"No…that's OK." Her hands landed in her lap, then back up to grab a napkin, then she started tearing it apart. "They can watch."

"I'm sure it won't be that bad."

At this point, she realized she'd shredded her napkin, so she balled up all the pieces and set it aside. "As for next week,"

"A vacation sounds like a great idea."

That got me a smile. "I'm looking forward to it." Then, her smile slipped. "I'll have my phone with me, and I'm bringing my laptop. If anything happens and you need me, just call or send an email. I'm not sure about the time difference."

"I'm hoping to leave you alone to relax."

"I won't be able to relax, if I don't think you'll contact me if you need to."

"Let me rephrase. I'm hoping to leave you alone to relax but will get in touch if I need to. Don't worry."

"Thanks. I hope you don't need to. The only stuff I know I have to do is study for art history. Beyond that, all I want to do is relax."

Rich Bastard Shopping Mall:

"Alright," she said, turning around with her hands on her hips, "where's the bookstore?"

"Bookstore's the last stop, Haruhi." I looped my hand through her arm and pulled her forward. "Leather store's first."

"Leather? I don't really wear leather, Shinobu."

"How about pink leather?" I called out over my shoulder, and Cho came skipping along. Do any of these girls realize how easy they are to play with? Then I caught Renge's eye, and she winked. She knows.

The corsets caught my eye, but Cho peeled off to check out the boots. Then we heard Yuki. "Isn't it too hot for leather? I mean, it will be so uncomfortable with the humidity and the sand."

"Doesn't have to be for the trip. This is always my first stop here."

"Oh."

The only person who bought something was Cho. She's gonna look so hot in those thigh-high, pink leather boots come winter.

.

"These would look amazing on you, Haruhi. Go try them on."

Renge added another hanger to the pile the salesperson was already holding. Shorts for 80,000 yen (~$800). I know it's Dolce & Gabbana, but is it necessary? No. That's rent for my old apartment.

"Renge, we're buying clothes for a beach trip. They'll get covered with sand and salt water. Shouldn't we be looking as something less expensive?" I said, trying to keep my voice down so the salesperson doesn't hear. "These prices are crazy."

"But these are casual clothes. Look," she held up another hanger, "this is a t-shirt."

"It's 94,000 yen (~$940)!"

"It's a t-shirt." She handed it to her salesperson, and they ran it to a fitting room for her.

"Fine." They can try on and buy whatever they want, but I already had enough clothes for the trip. I'll just watch them, give opinions about the clothes, and try not to look at the price tags. Might be the only way I survive this.

"You need to try this on too."

It was a sweatshirt that was three times the cost of the t-shirt. I leaned towards her, "Renge, remember, I'm supposed to be wearing commoner clothes. Kaoru wants that look for me."

"Oh, yeah. I keep forgetting." Good. Enough of this. "But no one's going to see you on the beach."

I sighed and rolled my eyes. "An even better reason not to spend this money. Besides, Umeko-san and I already went shopping and bought way too much."

Whatever she saw in my eyes must have sunk in. "Alright. I'll let you off here, but you really should buy something for yourself today."

"That's what the bookstore's for."

.

Haruhi wandered off to see what Yuki was up to, and I told her salesperson to put all her clothes back. She's right. Kaoru doesn't want her wearing things outside the price range of the average person. It's too bad. She'd look so cute in these leggings. They're only 87,000 yen. Maybe I should get her a pair.

No. Someone else buying them for her still doesn't work. It's not like everyone in Japan has a friend that can afford to spend like we can.

Tamaki-kun will love these leggings, though. I'm getting a pair for me. And look, matching sunglasses for only 34,000. Definitely.

.

"I was thinking this for tonight." Yuki held up a sleeveless, straight-cut dress in black. "A little black dress is never wrong."

It's nice but all I could see was the price tag…325,000 yen!

"Yuki, we're going to Ranka's opening tonight, not some 5-star restaurant. Takashi wants that club accessible to most of Japan."

"So?" She clearly didn't understand.

I looked around the Louis Vuitton store and called them all over.

"Ooo, Yuki. I love that dress. It will be perfect for tonight."

"Actually, that's why I called you all over." They all stared at me like I'm ruining their parade. Maybe I've been making too many money comments today. "Takashi doesn't want Ranka's to be exclusive. That's why the prices aren't extreme."

"Yeah, I saw that. They're higher than the Wednesday restaurants, but not that much."

I nodded at Shinobu. I think she gets it. "I have a proposition for you all. Let's go to a high-end commoner shopping center for tonight's dresses."

They looked at each other then back at me. Shinobu grinned. "Deal, but you have to do something for us…

…And that's how I ended up in La Perla.

.

After our discussion at Dolce & Gabbana, I talked to Shinobu about how to get Haruhi to buy some nice things for the trip. Turns out, she's a great partner in crime.

If Haruhi can't be seen wearing high fashion, then she'll have to wear it where it can't be seen.

She wants us to buy commoner dresses for tonight, then she must buy designer underwear for the trip. Seems fair.

And since she's buying some, we all are. New panties, bras, bralettes, night clothes for all. Lace and silk everywhere.

.

"But this is nothing but lace. There's no support."

"Haruhi, have you seen your chest? You don't need support. These are perfect for you."

She flipped over the price tag and took a breath.

"Stop. You agreed. You'd get stuff for the trip here without saying anything about the price, and we'd get dresses for tonight and some stuff for the trip at your shops."

"Alright." If I wasn't a hardened yakuza bitch, I might have taken a step back at that glare, but I think Yuki did.

I was going to pair the two of them up, because of similar body shapes and probably tastes, but I'm not going to push Haruhi onto Yuki. She might permanently damage her.

"Alright, girls. Spread out. Find your things, and if any of you find something for Haruhi, bring it to me."

"Shinobu…"

I leaned over and lowered my voice, "Look at them. Especially Cho. They are having a blast thinking they are making you buy lingerie."

"They are making me buy lingerie."

I raised a brow. "I know that you could have gotten them to play along without coming in here, but you capitulated." I heard a slight growl. "You probably had no idea what the prices were here when you did, but you did, so enjoy."

"I don't need all of this."

"There are many definitions of need, but I do actually understand what you mean. Tell you what," I glanced around to make sure none of them were within earshot, "pick one bra and panty set and bikini. I'll fix it so you only have to get those."

I almost burst out laughing as she sagged in relief. You'd think we were making her do something horrible like clean a bathroom or something.

"Thanks."

"No problem, but you have to wear at least the bikini next week."

"OK."

.

I watched the salesclerk bag up Shinobu's purchases and could feel my face burning. Little teddies, thongs, corsets, and push-ups. Does Kasanoda know she wears those things? Has he seen them?

I opened my bag and sighed. All pink and white. Simple bra and pantie sets with lots of lace and some bows. Does that make me childish? Is that what Honey-kun would think after we get married, and he sees what I wear?

"Cho," I turned to see Shinobu standing next to me, "they wouldn't sell it if you didn't look good in it."

"How?"

"I can tell by your face. Can you picture me wearing what you bought?" I huffed and shook my head. "Can you picture me dating Honey-senpai?" That got a laugh and a shake. "Well, I can't picture you wearing what I bought and dating Ritsu. That's why they have such a big variety."

I looked up gave her a full-wattage smile. "Thanks, Shinobu. That's exactly what I needed to hear."

"No problem. We're all girls, and we're all sexy, just in different ways."

Then Yuki walked up. "Good idea only making her buy just those two sets. I thought she was going to faint when she saw my total."

"What was it?"

"I don't remember."

"What did you get?"

"Bikinis, bra and pantie sets, nightgown, and a couple other things." I decided to let that go when I saw her blush, but Shinobu didn't.

"What other things?"

"Well…"

"Come on, spill."

She leaned forward and lowered her voice, "I found a set in white that's nothing but lace. I'm saving it for a special occasion."

"He's going to propose?" I squealed. "That's so exciting!"

"Shhh. I think it's coming. I'm not sure when. But look," she pulled a couple small pieces of lace out of the bag, "they're perfect for a wedding night."

.

Maybe not my wedding night, but for Yuki's…sure. I'm betting Ritsu will want black silk. But I've got plenty of time for that. Almost a year.

Renge and Haruhi finally joined us, and we headed for the commoner's store.

.

xXx

.

Evening, Ranka's:

"I can't believe you said that."

"Why? It's the truth."

"Yeah, but…"

"It's kinda the reason we went there."

Renge and Haruhi kept arguing as we were seated down front.

Social media and the tabloids have been full of hype letting everyone know Ranka's is opening tonight, so the entry was full of press. When they asked Haruhi who she was wearing, she said, 'I have no idea, but I bought it at Zara', a commoner store. I thought the fashion reporters would faint. Then, Shinobu said that's where she got hers. The crowd went crazy.

"Yuki, you sure Akito-san doesn't mind about tonight?"

"No. He went out with a couple of his friends from medical school." Since we were here two nights ago as couples, we decided to come tonight as just the girls. The guys have their own table. Akito-kun already had plans with his friends.

"I'm trying something different tonight. Everything on the menu sounds good."

"Definitely."

"Let's get several appetizers to share."

.

"Tamaki-senpai, would you sit down. You're blocking my view."

"There's no one on stage yet."

"Yeah, but I can't see Bu with your big head in the way."

"Tonight is supposed to be guy's night."

"Doesn't mean I can't look."

I rolled my eyes at the two of them and looked over at the girls. Haruhi, Shinobu, Renge, Yuki, and Cho-senpai all had on commoner clothes and looked good. I'd already checked their hashtags and the comments were about even – good/bad. Except for Haruhi's. Almost everyone was glad to see her out of designer outfits.

"Hey," Hika nudged me, "stop staring. You look weird."

"Sorry. My mind was wandering."

"No shit." He leaned closer. "You alright?"

"Yeah. Guess I miss having a girl to stare at."

"Look around, baby brother. There are plenty of girls here."

Baby brother? Idiot.

.

"Look. There's Fujioka Haruhi."

"And Houshakuji Renge. She's engaged to Suoh Tamaki."

"That's him over there. Isn't he gorgeous?"

"I guess, but those twins are hot. I'd love to be the filling in a Hitachiin sandwich."

.

"Looks like a successful night, Takashi."

"Hn." I came tonight as a guest, wanting to see the opening from that perspective and maintain the mystery of ownership. I ended up sitting between Satoshi and Kaoru. "I'm surprised you came."

Satoshi shrugged. "The food was good." He typed a text on his phone. "I'm headed for Neon after. Mitsukuni and Cho-senpai are staying here, but everyone else is going with me."

"Hn."

"You coming?"

"No. I think I'll stay here in the office and see how it goes."

"You sure? Haruhi's coming too."

I jerked my head away from the stage and looked at Satoshi. "Haruhi?" Haruhi's going to Neon? She doesn't like being there at all.

"Yeah. Took a lot to talk her into it."

"Maybe I should go to Neon and check in with my managers."

"Sure, Taka. Whatever you say."

.

I watched a tear slowly run down Haruhi's face and handed her a handkerchief.

"Thanks."

"Is this the type of show your father did?"

"Yeah. He would have loved this."

I put my arm around her shoulder and squeezed. "I'm sure he's happy knowing the club's finally opening, and it's a success."

"Thanks, Renge."

.

"Less than two weeks until my birthday."

"Then you can come here to the disco with Honey-kun and me."

"Yeah, but Ritsu can't."

"Who said you need him to have fun?" Renge winked at me.

I smirked back. "Damn straight." Although I doubt I'd have much fun here without him.

.

Complete success. The show was flawless, and the crowd gave a standing ovation. I didn't see one plate being sent back and heard nothing but positive comments. Excellent.

Some had already gone on to Neon, and Mitsukuni and Cho were already up at the disco. I'm surprised they wanted to go again.

"Takashi, are you staying here?"

Haruhi's red shirt and pants made her skin glow. There's no way she chose that herself. The shirt didn't come down to the top of her pants, so there was a narrow strip of skin showing. The pants had wide legs and almost looked like a skirt. Somehow, they made her seem dainty without swallowing her up. Throughout the evening, I kept finding myself staring.

"I thought I'd go to Neon with the rest of you."

"Neon? Alright. Have fun."

"You're not going? Satoshi said you were."

She ran her hand through her hair, and her shirt came up showing more of her skin. I took a deep breath.

"I told him I'd think about it, and I did. I'm tired and have a big day tomorrow. I just want to go back to the estate."

What a relief.

We rode home together in her SUV.

Saturday, July 16:

Nagoya:

"Thanks for coming, Renge."

"No problem. I'm happy you asked me."

"It's just…well…without the Morinozuka's here, I'm not sure how to keep the conversation going. I mean…they kicked my mother out of the family, but say they want to make up for it and get to know me."

"I understand. Give me a sign if you want me to change the subject or anything, but I'll be able to tell. Don't worry."

She turned and watched the scenery go by out of the SUV's window. When Haruhi told me about her grandparents, I was completely shocked. None of us knew about them and what happened. No reason for us to.

I can't believe she asked me for help. She hardly ever does, so it's an honor. Now, I only have to keep the conversation rolling and avoid any awkwardness. I can totally do that.

Haruhi didn't want to worry them with a large security presence, so there's only the driver and Miwa-san in the car. There's a car full of her security and another full of mine following us. Not a lot to be worried about though. No one knows about the trip. Not even the rest of the group.

.

"We haven't been to this restaurant before." Manami and I were surprised Haruhi-chan wanted to meet for lunch rather than come straight to our home, but we're letting her take the lead on this visit. It took a lot just to get her to come.

Her friend seems nice, and, though I wish she didn't feel the need, I understand why she came along. At least it's not her guardians again. I felt we couldn't talk openly in front of them.

"I found it online and the menu looked good. If you'd rather go somewhere else…"

"No, Dear. This is fine. Daisaku and I have always wanted to eat here. We just never got around to it."

Lunch was delicious, but I couldn't help looking over at her driver and bodyguard at another table. A driver and a bodyguard. Are they truly necessary?

"How are your studies coming along?" my wife asked.

"I'm doing well in all my courses except art history. That one's giving me difficulties."

"I'm sure you'll overcome that, Dear. It's probably a different skill set than your other classes."

"Exactly. If I could…"

They were off. Manami will talk about education and learning techniques forever unless someone stops her. It's what makes her an exceptional teacher.

I turned to Haruhi-chan's friend. "I see you're engaged, Renge-chan. Have you set a date?" Young to be engaged. Still in high school.

"Yes. Tamaki-kun and I will be married as soon as I graduate. He's in his first year of university at Todi."

"An excellent school. That's where Haruhi's mother went."

.

The Katayama's, Renge, and I climbed into the SUV, and Daisaku-san gave directions to the driver. They wanted to show me different places in town that meant something to Mom. We saw her elementary school, the park she loved the most, her favorite ice cream store, and several other things on our way back to their home. The ice cream was delicious.

"What a lovely home," I said as we were shown in. It was well lived in and felt cozy. I would have enjoyed visiting here as a kid.

"Thank you, Haruhi-chan. We're quite proud of it."

"Meow!"

"What a darling kitty cat!" I knelt down to pet the fluffy, gray cat who was sniffing me suspiciously, obviously smelling Koko.

"That's Li. We've had her for years, and she keeps us on our toes."

The conversation lagged, and Renge tried her best to keep it going. "Are any of Kotoko-san's childhood friends still in the area?"

"A few, but we haven't spoken to them in a very long time."

Of course, you haven't. You disowned Mom. Why would they want to talk to you?

Why am I getting angry?

"It's a couple hours until dinner. Would you girls like to play one of Kotoko's favorite games?" Manami-san walked over to a cabinet and pulled out a long, flat box. "We found playing Scrabble one of the better ways to expand our English vocabulary."

.

"'Living'—10 points."

"Let's see. I think I can use this 'q'. 'Question'—17 points."

"And it's on a double word square."

This was a good idea. It's much less awkward than sitting around trying to think of things to talk about. Their English isn't as strong as mine, but they have no reason for it to be.

"'Elasticity'—15 points."

"Excellent word, Renge."

"When we're done here, I want to show you some things of your mother's." Manami-san's eyes welled up. "I couldn't bear to part with them, even after what we did to her. Daisaku got the trunk out of storage last night in case you wanted to see them."

Mom's things? "I'd like very much to see them."

"I'm so glad. There are some toys and clothes from when she was a little girl. You never got to wear them, but maybe your little girl might."

I felt my face turn red but smiled. "It's something to think about later. I'm not planning on children until after law school."

Daisaku snorted but covered it with a cough.

By this time, it was my turn again. "'Porcupine'—15 points, times 3 for the triple word score – 45 points." They had to ask what a porcupine is, and I pulled it up on my phone.

"Such interesting animals they have in America."

.

We offered to help with dinner, and Manami accepted. They also invited Miwa-san and the driver in for dinner. The driver declined, wanting to stay with the car. So far, I believe the Katayama's don't know about the other security. They will find their own dinner.

The meal was a simple hot-pot and rice, and it was delicious. If Haruhi learned to cook from her mother, her mother learned to cook from hers.

"Haruhi-chan, I waited to bring this up, but we saw the news about last weekend. Are you alright?"

I hid a smile as it took Haruhi a minute to realize what they were talking about. "Oh, I'm fine. A cut on my knee and some bumps and bruises."

"It was quite brave what you did, Dear, saving that young boy."

"If it hadn't been me, I'm sure someone else would have scooped him up. He's a sweet kid."

"Don't underestimate the importance of what you did. If you hadn't been there right then, who knows what could have happened."

"I suppose…"

Here's where I come in. "What didn't come out at the time was that Haruhi was there for a photo shoot for Hitachiin Kaoru's 'Every Woman' line. She's the face of the line." Haruhi shot me a quick glare, and I smiled back. At least I got them off discussing the kid.

"I've seen the ads. Very impressive."

"Oh, I just wear what they give me and stand where I'm told."

"I'm sure it's more than that, Dear. How exciting."

"I'm not sure I'd call it that."

"And your business, Petto Chinmi. How did that come about?"

I watched their reactions as she told them about how she'd bought the company and was in the process of paying off the bank loan. "Overall, the business is doing well. We attended several dog-shows this past spring and will go again next year. They had a positive impact on sales."

Daisaku-san hesitated, but asked, "And your guardians, are you treated well? Do you need anything? Perhaps help with university tuition?"

"Oh," she placed her chopsticks down and shook her head, "no. The Morinozuka's have been more than generous. They'll be paying for my university, though I know I'd qualify for a scholarship." She frowned slightly. I know her Ouran tuition is a sore spot for her. "They take very good care of me. Almost like I'm one of their own."

"That's so good to hear, Dear. We weren't worried, but having your reassurance helps."

"They're wonderful people. I couldn't ask for better."

I saw a frown pass over Manami-san's face. Haruhi can be so blunt sometimes and not realize the impact of what she says. On the other hand, though, they did disown their daughter, so what kind of guardians would they be?

"I'm curious about your bodyguard," Daisaku-san turned to Miwa-san. "What exactly are you protecting Haruhi-chan from? Is she in danger?"

"Fujioka-sama is easily recognized because of her modeling. We protect her from overzealous fans."

Good answer. No need for them to know the dangers that are really out there or the size of her detail. Or mine, for that matter.

"May I ask if Haruhi-chan is responsible for your employment?"

She broke in before Miwa-san could answer. "Not personally. All Morinozuka security are employed by the estate. They also provide me with a PR representative to help with my social media and public appearances."

"Well, I must say, it sounds more involved than I realized."

"It can be, yes, but they are experts and make me feel safe."

"That's good, Dear. We want you safe as well."

Conversation lagged as we continued eating, but then Manami-san spoke up. "I'm so happy you came to visit. Maybe next time you could stay overnight."

Next time? Overnight? How involved do they want to be in her life?

Haruhi did her best to brush off the request. "I'll have to see what my schedule allows. I'm not able to stay later today, as I have another photo shoot tomorrow and need my," she rolled her eyes, "beauty sleep."

"Another shoot so soon? Though, I suppose the one last weekend was cut short."

"It was, but Kaoru scheduled another on Thursday to fill in the gaps. The one tomorrow is for Petto Chinmi. I've been talked into being the face of the company and appearing in all the ads."

"Wow," Daisaku gave a low whistle, "between modeling for the clothing line, owning the company, and now appearing in those ads, you must be earning quite a bit of money. I hope you're investing it wisely."

Haruhi tilted her head. "I'm paid base salary for a beginning print model from the Hitachiin's, and, as the owner of the company, I'm not being paid to model for Petto Chinmi. What I earn goes to pay off the bank loan."

"Ah. Makes sense. If you need investment advice, you can always ask me. I can help you set up an account at my bank."

"Thank you for the offer, however I already have an investment manager." Haruhi's definitely learning how to gracefully turn things down. Besides, I'm not sure what he does at his bank, but that's not where I would go for investment advice.

SUV, Driving back to Tokyo:

"Yes, the biggest cat gift basket you have. Thank you." I hung up and Renge's brows drew together in curiosity.

"I ordered them a cat gift basket. I'm not sure what they normally feed Li, but I thought she'd like some treats and toys."

"Excellent idea."

"Thanks again for coming Renge. It was easier with you there."

"You're welcome. Glad to do it."

Overall, it was a good trip. Definitely not as stressful as I anticipated. I hugged Mom's childhood Teddy Bear to my chest and thought about the baby clothes they showed me. Would I want them for my own children?

.

They seem like nice people.

Strange how they asked if she needed help with college tuition. Wouldn't they realize the Morinozuka's would be covering that?

I'm just glad Haruhi asked me for help for a change.

Gardens, Morinozuka Estate:

"Thank you again for allowing this, Akira-san, Umeko-san."

"It's our pleasure, Haruhi-chan. Besides, it's safer for you here."

She huffed but nodded. I'm still shocked she asked to use the grounds, but this way we can watch. I've never seen a photoshoot before. The head gardener's overseeing the crew with his assistants.

Akira and I have been up since dawn, as usual, so we've been watching the setup since they arrived. Haruhi-chan joined us on the back deck for coffee.

"I expected more equipment and sets."

"We're focusing on the animals, products, and," she rolled her eyes, "me. It will be mainly toys and treats for props except when we give a dog a bath. That will be a mess."

An older gentleman approached, and Haruhi-chan stood. "Good morning. Please join us." She escorted him to the table and introduced us. We already knew him, of course. Our security did checks on her employees. "It's a pleasure to meet you Tanaki-san. Haruhi-chan speaks highly of you."

"And it's an honor to meet you, Morinozuka-sama, Morinozuka-sama." He straightened from his bow and we insisted he use our first names. "I wish to thank you again for allowing us to disturb your weekend with our photoshoot."

"It's no problem," I waived him off before we could slip into a circle of thank-you's. "We're happy to provide a safe and suitable place."

"Allow me again to offer you compensation for the use of your grounds."

"It is not necessary," Akira stated firmly. "Haruhi-chan is a member of this family, and as such, the grounds are hers when she needs them."

"Please join us for coffee, Tanaki-san. You can walk us through today's schedule."

.

"Taka, come on. You're going to miss this." Satoshi grabbed my arm and tried to pull me to the dojo door. "You do want to see Haruhi's photoshoot, don't you?"

I stood my ground. He could never move me.

"It doesn't start for another twenty minutes. I need a shower."

"Oh, a shower. A shower! Yes, go take a shower for Haruhi."

I walked past him towards the door. "I will. You need one too. You stink."

Satoshi took off and got to the mansion first. I took my time.

Would Haruhi want us there watching? Would it make her uncomfortable? I could watch from inside the mansion. But Satoshi and our parents will be watching where she can see. Will she think I don't care if I'm not there?

"Taka! Get in here!"

.

"For this shot, we're going to give you a bag of treats and let some dogs loose. Just do what comes naturally and don't worry about the animals. If they run away or don't do what you expect, it's fine. The trainers with round them up."

"Alright."

They handed me a big bag of our specialty treats. I think they want to replicate the pictures of me running away from the dogs trying to get them. We'll see what happens.

I walked out onto the lawn and plopped down in the grass. As soon as I opened the bag, half a dozen dogs were let loose.

Is that a dog? It's as big as a pony! And the little one can't keep up. I laughed when he stepped on his ear and couldn't figure out what happened. Should have kept my eyes on the big one. He barreled into me, knocking me over. So far, it's going just like the other shoot.

.

"I've never seen her act like this before," Umeko said, leaning towards me and lowering her voice. "That laugh is beautiful."

Yes. It is. High and clear, it rang out through the gardens. I watched all the gardeners stop and stare. Since Haruhi-chan moved here, none of us have heard her so carefree, so happy. "It's infectious," I said back before I started laughing with her.

"She sounds like a kid."

I agree with Satoshi. She sounds young and carefree. Like she didn't lose her father five months ago.

"Makes me want to fill her bedroom with puppies," Umeko mumbled under her breath.

Now she's flat on her back with the dogs climbing all over her licking her face and trying to get the treats. This will make perfect advertisements for her company.

"Wait! Wait!" She managed to stand up and took off running, the dogs on her heels. Holding the bag up high, she turned to run backwards and toss treats to them. I could hear the director and photographer telling each other how amazing the shots they were getting are.

"Perfect. Just perfect."

"I know. I was worried because she's so serious. I wasn't sure she knew how to laugh."

"Guess all it took was a few dogs."

.

Am I glad that's over. Those dogs ran me all over the lawn. I kept expecting the director to end it. I had to get a new bag of treats twice. Piggy dogs.

"Fujioka-sama, they're ready for you in the pool house."

"Just a minute," I called back. I need to change clothes and move on to the next setup. They commandeered the pool house as the dressing room. I'm laying on the grass, looking up at the clouds. The gardeners mowed yesterday and the air's heavy with that fresh-mowed smell. I could lay here forever.

"Fujioka-sama?"

"I'm coming."

I dragged myself up off the ground and headed to change.

.

She's beautiful.

I've seen Haruhi dressed in many costumes over the years, I've seen her dressed for glamourous balls, I've seen her in Kaoru's suits.

It doesn't matter what she's wearing, she's beautiful.

Right now, she's wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts, and one of the dogs is walking at her side. The sun coming through the tree canopy is giving dramatic light beams to the forest floor. The director surprised us all when he wanted to give this setup at try. He said it might work for outdoors type magazines.

"Come on. This way," she encouraged the dog as she barely tugged on the leash. All the dogs here are from a rescue, but this one is leash trained.

"Excellent. If you could walk down the path and then circle around those trees on that slight hill…" The photographer followed with enough distance to take full shots of her and the dog. "Now, crouch down and pet him."

"She's a natural, huh Taka."

"Yes." Our natural host.

"At least with the dogs. I wonder what her photoshoots with Kaoru-senpai are like?"

"The photos are good."

"Doesn't mean she's like this there."

"Hn."

Mother and Father stayed behind at the main lawn, but Satoshi and I followed into the wooded area of our gardens. We're standing behind the director, not wanting to get in the way.

Our natural host. How could I have not known she was a girl from the moment I saw her? Those first months, she somehow managed to wiggle herself into all of our hearts and make a home. Then, I realized I loved her.

Then, my life changed.

I need her. I need to be with her. Dating her. A couple.

"Taka," Satoshi elbowed me in the ribs, "they're done. Let's go."

We followed Haruhi, the dog, and the crew back to the pool house for another change of wardrobe.

.

Damn, does he have it bad. Looks like he might finally do something about it. I'll talk to Chika, Hikaru-senpai, and Kasanoda-senpai. If we push just right, they might be together by the end of the vacation. Renge-senpai's another that would help.

"Satoshi, what are you doing?"

"Just texting some people."

"You're sending pictures of Haruhi." I looked up quickly at his dangerous tone.

Then his phone chimed.

"Just to the group. It's not like I'm tweeting them."

"Did Haruhi give you permission?"

"Ah, no?"

That's when she came out of the pool house with her phone. "Satoshi, you better not be sending these pictures to anyone else."

"No. Definitely not. Just the group." The words tumbled out, trying to calm both of them down.

"Good." She walked up and snatched my phone. "I think they've seen enough, don't you?" I nodded. "They can wait for the ads to see the rest." I nodded again at the glare she gave me, then she handed me my phone.

.

"That was fascinating to watch, Haruhi-chan."

"Yes. Quite."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you again for the use of the grounds."

"You're welcome."

The shoot was over, and the crew started packing up. Akira and I were impressed at the care they showed to our property. Between them and the gardeners, the only evidence left behind were footprints.

"I better get going. The car leaves for the airport in just a few hours."

"Are you done packing?"

"Honami-san was finishing for me." I could tell she was going to sigh but stopped herself. She's becoming more comfortable with having a personal assistant, or at least accepting it. "She insisted I leave out the clothes I wanted packed, and she would take care of it. I only need to make sure I didn't forget anything and pack my carry-on."

"Are you taking any work with you?"

"No. Definitely not." She straightened her t-shirt and gave us a smile. "I'm going to relax and enjoy not having to do anything. I'll take my laptop to keep in touch, but I'm going to have fun."

Haninozuka Jet, Over the Yellow Sea:

I turned off my tablet and looked out the window.

I'd done it. I'd won the gold medal in every world cup this season. Every. Single. One. A worthy goal and accomplishment for a Haninozuka. Something the alien hadn't done.

Of course, that's because he's not allowed to compete publicly anymore, but that's not well known. I will beat him one day. I will.

Our coach's snores got louder as he shifted positions. Most of the team was asleep. I'm too keyed up from the win and the upcoming vacation to close my eyes.

Then I saw smoke coming from the engine on the wing, and my stomach flipped as the plane lurched.

"This is your captain speaking. We've lost an engine and will be attempting an emergency landing. Everyone return to your seats and fasten your seat belts. Again…return to your seats…"

Suddenly, everyone was awake and yelling. Some stumbling to their seats.

We lurched again and started to descend. I think I'm going to be sick.

Author's Note:

Don't hate me…you only have to wait a week to know what happens.

Hmmmm…'Parisian High School Host Club'…who could have published that?

So, Kaoru found the kid and included him in the photo shoot. One thing's for sure, you can't say he doesn't know how to capitalize on publicity. I thought it was cute, and since they can't have animals in their ads per his agreement…

Full disclosure (and maybe TMI), I've never had a wax before, so I'm only guessing how uncomfortable it must me. Sure sounds uncomfortable.

Had fun with the shopping trip. Cho's pink boots and everyone's expensive underwear. You'll be hearing more about the set Haruhi bought. (I looked up the prices on the companies' websites. Yes, they are that high.) Zara is a store in Japan that I think compares with Dillard's here in America.

Not sure why Satoshi thought Haruhi agreed to go to Neon. He really should know her better.

Hope you like with I did with the grandparents. I had a hard time coming up with things for them to do and conversation topics. Think I did OK. If I had long lost older relatives, they'd be worried about my wellbeing too.

Yes, July 17 really is world emoji day. Only Tamaki would have that much fun with it.

Hope you like the Petto Chinmi shoot. You'll hear more about it when they pick the photos for the ads.

Next Chapter:

Resolution to the Haninozuka plane emergency landing, and the beginning of their vacation. (I have so much planned for that, it will take two chapters.)

Any requests for specific fluff will be taken into consideration. I've got a list of ideas, but that doesn't mean they're better than yours. Let me know what you think!
