34. Lady of the West

A disconcerted sigh escaped the Lady of the West that late, stormy evening. From her position on a cushioned stool in front of her vanity, Seiobo stared outside the glass balcony windows as the wind picked up. Such dreadful weather, which only soured her mood further.

What made matters worse was her son's absence. For hours, she had waited for his visit to her chambers, but for the first time in years, he failed to appear. Sesshomaru had always been punctual, never one to stray without reason, but something about tonight left a bitter taste in her mouth and an unpleasant smell drifting through the corridors of her palace.

"Is it true what I heard, Fei? That my son brought a human into the palace?"

"Yes, my lady. That is what I heard. And a female at that."

Seiobo mused, nodding at this interesting gossip. A human woman. For what purpose would her son bring such a thing here? "How careless of Sesshomaru… Acting just like his father," She said, her fingers brushing over a silver hairpin lying in front of her.

"You needn't let the rumors bother you, my lady. I'm sure he had good reason for bringing that person here, and considering how late he returned, he must be exhausted."

"Perhaps so…" She said, sighing, and dismissed the servant with a wave of her hand. Seiobo ran her fingers through her brushed-out pearly tresses, admiring the visage in the reflection staring back. "Were this human any lovelier than me, it would be quite unfortunate…"

As if one human wasn't enough…

"Sesshomaru… don't think I don't know what you're planning. Your efforts are wasted," She said and moved from the vanity to her canopy bed to retire for the evening. Seiobo would see what sort of excuse he came up with during his next visit.

Author Notice:

I referenced Queen Mother of the West in Chinese mythology and decided Sesshomaru's mother could fit well with her. I used the name Seiobo which refers to her Japanese name in this case, and rather than have her connected with the Underworld, she would be the Guardian of the Peaches of Immortality.
