*Chapter 34*
Although in the midst of an electric-emerald light show of glitch-hopping, Oliver felt his coding lick with a jolt of heated excitement as Arcadia's golden sunshine beamed down onto his warpath. Like a bolt of lightning, he rocketed from Sugar Rush's pristine outlet and straight into Fix-It Felix Jr.'s outlet. With purpose, he bursted past the game's adorable little train station, past the Nicelander's tidy, well-kept, brick-ladened row of beautiful townhouses and came upon the radius of the game's massive, incredible stretch of a Niceland building. Oliver popped out of his coded thrill-ride, skid to a halt on his bigger bare feet and heavily panted as his near-crazed honey-brown eyes dart about the area. Promptly awaiting quarter alerts, Ralph, Felix, Gene and a few other Nicelanders were cutely loitering about in the grass, just outside the view of the main game screen. Oliver grit his teeth, took a few running steps and glitch-hopped directly into the group's light-hearted gravity.
"Jimmy Cricket," Felix shrieked as he yanked his hat off of his head, stiffened and held it over his face; although the group erupted in total shock, they all beamed happy smiles and relaxed the second they saw Oliver, everyone except Ralph. Felix grinned and shakily tucked his hat back over his head in sheepish delight, "Oh! It's just Olly-boy. Y'okay, bud?"
"Oliver," Ralph hissed in a jolt of pupil-tightening terror, he grappled the tops of Oliver's shoulders, yanked his son to face him dead on and urgently peered deep into his eyes, "No, no, don't do this to me, don't say it-"
"Mom just went into labor," Oliver panted, and though this was a detrimental predicament, Oliver eased an elated little grin and chuckled through his heavy panting, "Gideon's coming, dad."
"NOW?" Felix erupted with a little bounce of excited surprise, and though all the Nicelanders began to urgently squawk and coo in a sting of an excited air, they sharply dragged their now conflicted eyes in a tight upward swing of hot dread.
"Game day JUST started, there's no way I'll make it, loading bars don't finalize for anything longer than a few hours," Ralph wheezed in rising desperation as he kept his hands tight to Oliver's big, broad shoulders.
"Dad, go," Oliver choked, he grappled his father's wrists and began to do what he could to try and pry Ralph of him, "Dad, get outta here, I'll cover for you. Go."
"Oliver," Ralph grunted nervously as he urgently peered up to the Niceland building, he flung his massive hand to the building and opened his mouth to argue, though Oliver gave his father a smiling look of sternness, he firmly pointed to the game's exit and stood his ground.
"Dad, GO! I'll be fine, go, mom needs you," Oliver rushed, to which Gene, Felix and everyone began urgently chattering, alongside the majority beginning to shoo Ralph away in cute encouragement, "GIDEON needs you. Go!"
"I owe you the world, Ol," Ralph grunted with a bittersweet grimace of a smile, to which Oliver flagged his hand in a guffaw of cuteness, though the group largely flinched the second Ralph's coding zipped away in a precise hot mess of purple pixels; Felix huffed a chuckle and put his hands on his hips.
"User, I'm SO glad that guy isn't allowed to use his glitching powers during game day," Felix chimed cutely with a shrug, he smiled up to Oliver in sweet apprehension, "We'd all be doomed!"
"Oliver, you... SURE you're gunna be okay taking your father's place like this?" Gene questioned as he wrinkled his nose and nervously glanced about the handful of other Nicelanders that stood around. He finally eyed Oliver in cheeky reveal, "Sure, you're big and can wreck, but... You don't have the hair-"
"Or the overalls," A single Nicelander softly chimed.
"It doesn't matter, I can still wreck the crap out of things, that's all the game play needs," Oliver grunted, he gestured to his chest before he firmly ruffled his fingers into his straight black hair that draped his forehead. He shut his eyes, wrinkled his nose and furiously ruffled his hair, so to hopefully match his father's, and though Oliver was blessed with Vanellope's sleek, straight, glossy black hair, it still successfully poofed in a style similar to Ralph's upon agitating it. Oliver finally eased Ralph's infamous smile, eyed Felix and put his hands on his hips, "Alright, Uncle Felix... Y'play my dad day in and day out, but... You're in for a real treat from Oliver Schweetz."
"Oh, my nephew," Felix started with a coy twinkle in his eye, he mischievously twirled his pristine, gorgeous golden hammer about, tugged the visor of his hat a little further down his forehead and gave Oliver a grinning look of challenge as the cabinet loudly chimed the alert of incoming quarters, "You're not gunna know what hit'cha."
"Easy, slow breaths," Tessa's gentle voice cooed to Vanellope, she sat propped up in her's and Ralph's bed with her hands desperately clutching her loading bar. Tessa huffed a shaky little giggle and tenderly blot Vanellope's forehead free of sweat, "You know how this goes, you know the hardest part is almost over, mom."
"Eighty percent," Zed chirped with a nod as his fingers furiously typed away on the holographic keyboard before him and his displays; diligently keeping tabs of Vanellope's and Gideon's coding, he grit his teeth and urgently dart his eyes to the gape of Vanellope's bedroom door, almost desperate for Ralph to erupt through it, though he flinched as Koko's much tinier figure was the one to enter the room.
"I put the blanket in the dryer," Koko hurried, so not to hover or be too much of an over-cumbersome presence whilst her mother was in pain, Koko eased into Zed's presence, who had politely set up his temporary camp of code boxes and code room controls across their span of a sunny bedroom. Koko bobbed Zed a cute nod and heaved a shaky little sigh of excitement, "To wrap Gideon in when he gets here."
"Good idea," Zed bobbed a nod, though he raised an eyebrow and tenderly broadened his voice for the two girls; Tessa sat on Vanellope's and Ralph's massive bed, dead in the center and to Vanellope's right, to which Vanellope sat propped on the side of the bed, hopefully saving a spot for Ralph to stand and be next to her, if he fortunately presented himself. Zed grit his teeth and was happy to catch eyes with Vanellope, "Van, you SURE you don't want the numbing agent I gave Taffyta?"
"I want to feel my feet after this!" Vanellope shrieked with a grunt as tears and sweat ran down her face; although the strain, the group erupted in laughter which caused Vanellope to push forth a weak, defeated little smile.
"You just say the word, it's on stand by," Zed assured as him and Koko caught eyes; he gestured to Vanellope's coded stats, pulled up before the two. Her skeletal mainframe showed circuits running all about her body, though he gently gestured to the base of her spine, "I think I accidentally put the numbing agent too low, on Taffyta's spine... I think that's why she couldn't feel her feet for awhile."
"And higher?" Koko sneered, Zed grit his teeth.
"Knees? Hips, thighs," Zed shook his head and sucked in a breath through said grit teeth, though they both flinched as Vanellope tightly grimaced a loud groan of sheer pain, "My job may be hard, but nothing compares to the things you ladies do for the family."
"Damn straight," Koko stabbed as she crossed her arms and gave Zed a sassy side eye, and although teasing, Zed bobbed a nod and accepted the gentle defeat.
"Where's Ralph," Vanellope whined, she grit her teeth and urgently peered into Tessa's eyes as big tears rolled down her cheeks. She choked a shaky grunt, heavily panted and shook her head, "Tess, I... I-"
"Ninety percent," Zed stated through a grimace, though he flinched as the code room orb, to his left, illuminated a bit brighter and cued a long, glowing white rope, a specific rope that everyone was well aware its purpose, and with the gentle inch it began to take in Vanellope's direction, pure panic began to set in.
"It's okay, mom, it's gunna be just fine," Tessa urgently assured with a smile as she lovingly stroked Vanellope's forehead, she narrowed her gaze and hushed her voice, "I'm right here with you."
"Please don't leave my side," Vanellope cried quietly, she shook her head and felt her pupils tighten as the hot poker of a live-wired rope continued to worm closer to her, in midair, in preparation to extract Gideon's coding from her own, the final stretch with the most amount of pain in this process. She shook her head and urgently gestured towards the rope as it inched closer and closer, "I-I'm not ready, I'm not ready!"
"Mom, we can't prolong it, it could be dangerous for Gideon's AND your coding," Tessa tenderly assured as she remained knelt, on the bed, next to her mother.
"We have to wait for Ralph," Vanellope wheezed in a lilt of teary, defeated terror; she lulled her head back and heavily panted, though she urgently peered into Tessa's eyes, in pleading despair and began to sag and give in the second Tessa lifted Vanellope's shirt out of the way of Gideon's very proudly glowing, completed loading bar.
"It's gunna be okay, mom," Tessa eased as quietly and patiently as she could, "I'm right here with you, I'm not leaving."
"Ninety-nine," Zed grimaced, his eyes urgently glanced back to the gape of Vanellope's and Ralph's doorway, though as he hovered in patient wait, he lulled his eyes closed and felt defeat hit his skin the second the meter, on his gauges, read one hundred percent, "Alright guys, incoming."
Vanellope tearfully watched as the rope hovered tight over her abdomen, though before anything else could occur, the doorway erupted with an explosion of hurried purple pixels, and like out of a waking dream, a one in a million chance, Ralph's figure urgently appeared with a hard skid onto the tiles under his big feet. Everyone audibly gasped in a rile of pure shock, and though Ralph heavily panted and peered his attention tight to the situation at hand, his face eagerly sprawled an entirely humbled smile at the raw fact that he had made it just in time. Tessa urgently slapped her hands over her mouth in a motion of unadulterated surprise, and as Ralph rushed the bedside, Tessa carefully crawled off the bed and was entirely floored to let her father diligently take the reins from here. Vanellope urgently sat up a bit, grimaced a hard cry of overjoyed relief and slapped her arms about Ralph's thick neck as he eagerly pushed into her presence in a hover over her side of the bed.
"I'm here, I'm here," Ralph whispered into the top of her head as he firmly stroked the back of her head with his big hand. He raised his eyebrows and urgently peered back at the rope in anticipated wait, and though sweat dripped from both of the foreheads, he eased off of Vanellope and lovingly swiped her forehead and bangs free of sweat as she very visibly sagged to a way more relaxed state, "Y'ready for this?"
"I am now," Vanellope weeped with a small giggle as she clutched Ralph's game-day shirt, she shook her head and whimpered him a soft conclusion, "I can't believe you made it."
"Yeah, I'll be thanking Oliver until the end of time," Ralph rushed with a humbled, though he grit his teeth as the rope eagerly latched onto Gideon's loading bar, on Vanellope's skin. Vanellope arched her back in a rock of sudden, painful surprise and as she grappled Ralph's larger hand, he steadied himself in a kneel next to her bedside and urgently began to ease her the softest words down into her face, "Deep breaths, deep breaths... Y'know the painting you just finished yesterday?"
"Yeah," Vanellope grunted in a stifle of a squeeze out of her lungs, tears streamed her cheek as the code room orb began to now do everything it could to cleanly extract Gideon's coding from Vanellope's.
"I think all of what Gideon showed you is just a precursor," Ralph whispered cutely into her face, her eyes peered up to him in painful desperation, as if his presence was the only thing keeping her and Gideon to the grid. Vanellope grunted a loud noise of pure pain as she squirmed to desperately try and get comfortable. Ralph shook his head and tenderly shushed her with little cooing notions of love as he swept back her black bangs out of her eyes, "Methinks we should put that painting over his crib, it's only the beginning, y'know?"
"I'd like that," Vanellope whimpered, she grimaced a tight show of unadulterated pain and staggered a loud cry, and though Zed, Koko and Tessa were tightly standing by, all three were also diligently monitoring the process.
"Almost there," Zed urged happily, the group stood on tip toes in hot anticipation, to which Ralph grunted a small, teary laugh and bobbed a nod.
"Y'got this, you're a pro," Ralph stated as if this was entirely an obvious statement, he flagged his hand a little and guffawed her a sweet notion as he warmly kissed her forehead.
"Y'gunna catch him?" Vanellope staggered through a grunt of pain as the live-wired coding began to dim with certainty of letting go at any second, though Ralph raised his eyebrows in hot surprise.
"... Y-you want ME to catch him?" Ralph staggered, knowing that the live-wire had to map out Gideon's physical body before he would be kissed into reality, thus needing a steady pair of hands underneath said hover of a new baby, ready to secure. Ralph cutely smiled and narrowed his gaze in surprise, "You sure?"
"We needed you here, and you made it," Vanellope staggered, though she huffed a trembling sigh of panting relief as the live-wired rope finally let up and released its impenetrable suction on her skin. Ralph stumbled to get to his feet as his eyes eagerly assessed the hovering, glowing rope. Vanellope propped herself on her elbows and exhaustedly peered to said rope, as well, "You do the honors... Teamwork."
"You did all the leg work," Ralph whispered through the crackle of tears, to which Vanellope bobbed a nod and desperately tried to bounce back.
"I think Gideon would agree, on both fronts," Vanellope's trembling, weak voice panted, though everyone in the group flinched as the rope began to meticulously get to work.
Ralph heavily panted through his nose and eagerly watched as the code room did solid work at mapping out Gideon's tiny body and everything it was made of. With the outline of his little skeleton perfectly mapped, the rush of purple circuitry and veins that sprawled in and out of muscles and tissue that began to fervently be mapped out, the pure perfection and innocence of a fresh being, Ralph opened his big, trembling hands and skillfully placed them underneath the gridded being coming to life right before his eyes. Made from absolutely nothing but love, the embodiment of everything Ralph and Vanellope had so diligently sought for, the pristine, glowing rope eased this difficult journey with one single, final kiss of life to Gideon's little body. With the flicker of fresh, purple coding, the eruption of color that flood Gideon's presence, his little body finally came to life, once and for all. Alongside the sudden kiss of pink skin, the ruffle of an adorable sprout of auburn hair atop his head, gravity successfully sagged him into Ralph's huge, able hands, and with all of Sugar Rush's glory, the game sung with the sound everyone had been desperate to hear; a tiny hiccup of a first intake of Sugar Rush's sweet air, Gideon's little face grimaced at the cold, thus expelling the sweetest cries his little lungs could afford.
Ralph huffed a hard, shaky chuckle and so carefully brought Gideon's little body a bit tighter to his, in his huge, able hands. Sagged perfectly into the palms of his hands, Ralph grinned like an idiot, tears streamed down his face, he shook his head and peered down to his precious newborn with all the joy in the entire world. With Tessa and Koko a mess of tears, the group standing by erupted with claps and cheers of relieved excitement, and though Ralph smiled upon his adorable little child in his hands, a screaming mess of cutely announcing his arrival, Ralph gingerly stroked his thumb to Gideon's plump cheek and nearly couldn't take his eyes off of him. Ralph finally and eagerly smiled into Vanellope's eyes, happy to see her so relieved to hear Gideon's cries, he huffed a knowing, teary chuckle and so carefully began to sag Gideon's little body into Vanellope's motherly care. Vanellope wept as Gideon continued to cutely wail in little clips of hiccups and quick gasps for air, lungs that held sheer power, Vanellope breathed a teary little laugh and firmly cradled her arms and hands about Gideon's little body as he rested bare on the skin of her upper chest and collar.
"Y'made it, bud," Ralph's voice shakily cooed to his son, his big finger wrinkled into the bottom of Gideon's tiny foot. Ralph assessed Gideon's features, and although he was a tiny newborn, his hands and feet made entirely clear that he was bred to be a wrecking beast, clearly a puppy that would certainly grow into himself nicely. Ralph shook his head as him and Vanellope firmly held eyes in a teary match of overjoyed relief. Ralph huffed her a nasally chuckle, brushed her bangs out of her eyes and firmly pressed a few kisses into her forehead before whispering warmth into her face, "You did it..."
"He's so beautiful," Vanellope whimpered through a continued flood of tears, she furrowed her brows in a pang of lovestruck delight and pulled her head back so to get a solid look at her newborn. She breathed a heavy giggle and so gently stroked the top and back of his head, "He has your hair."
"He probably has your feisty personality," Ralph grunted with a laugh, one that easily had the room coat with warm chuckles, though he raised his eyebrows in a show of warmth as Koko sweetly budged into his presence with the return of the warm blanket she rushed to retrieve. Ralph smiled down to Koko, scooped her into a tight side hug and gratefully took the blanket from her, "Here, Gid, your big sister brought you something that you'll surely appreciate."
"Big sister..." Koko staggered through a giggle, she eyed Tessa and tried to wipe the tears from her face, "Holy shit, I'm a big sister!"
"Alright, baby, it's okay," Vanellope's nasally voice cooed down to Gideon's still wailing figure, though as he was wrapped in the warm blanket, his infant screams began to gently dribble to squirming murmurs. Vanellope raised her eyebrows, heaved a shaky giggle and finally glossed her eyes about her family. She spoke once Gideon's noises ceased to simple little whimpers, "Thanks, you guys... Wow, I can't... I can't believe he's here."
"He's perfect," Zed stated in pure, honest care, he bobbed a nod as Tessa and Koko began to hover about in eager excitement; although careful to give Ralph and Vanellope space, they were relieved that the two didn't seem concerned about the hovering. Zed politely kept his distance and continued to diligently run through finalized stats, "This all went down without a hitch... He arrived so quickly, though, I was genuinely shocked. Still, unscathed, both Vanellope and Gideon are in perfect standing."
"You did so well, mom," Tessa assured with a nod as both her and Koko wrangled each other into tight side hugs, to which Tessa continued in her father's direction, "You came just in the knick of time, dad... Oliver must've hauled ass."
"I owe him, BIG time," Ralph grumbled cutely as he tossed his eyes back down to Gideon's little figure, though a breath caught in the back of his throat the second he caught eyes with Gideon. Still, inquisitive, golden brown orbs, Ralph raised his eyebrows in a stark of surprise and choked a small chuckle. Gideon's innocent features peered tight into Ralph's eyes with a few long-blinks of sweet, dainty confusion, though Ralph softened, eased a happy grin and got more within Gideon's gravity, "Hey, bud... That wasn't so bad, huh?"
"He better speak for himself," Vanellope grunted, she peered down to the baby in her arms and gasped quietly in a prickle of sweet discovery, "Aw, he's lookin' at you, babe."
"Hey, you," Ralph whispered sweetly as Gideon long-blinked his golden eyes in dewy, sweet curiosity. He opened his bigger, clenched fist and grunted a sweet little whimper of a noise, as if to further test his vocal capabilities. Ralph gingerly wormed his finger into the top of Gideon's tiny bare chest, his deep voice so faintly pressed into Gideon's gravity, "I'm your papa."
"He's pretty much the greatest, little dude, you're never gunna be bored," Tessa assured with a smile, everyone's faces were soaked with tears. Tessa gingerly pat Ralph's broad shoulder and was thrilled to catch eyes with him, "Congratulations, you guys... You already know you're the best parents ever."
"We're only the best cause of you guys," Vanellope mumbled with smiling humility, she cutely caught eyes with her daughters and although she was just about to broaden the scope of introduction past Ralph, she frowned and tossed her gaze into Ralph's, "I... I feel really bad about Oliver."
"Me too," Ralph mumbled, to which Tessa furrowed her brow and shook her head.
"No, he... He wouldn't have done that if he didn't truly want to," Tessa firmly assured, she gestured back to Zed and shook her head, "Sure, brotherhood is incredibly important, but... If it were between Ace being present for Berri's birth, or Zed, we all know the answer."
"Oliver made a really selfless decision," Zed bobbed a nod and cautiously approached, "Gideon's safe and sound, caught by the man that helped create him. That's what needed to happen and Oliver realized it."
"I should probably go rescue him," Ralph grumbled, he gave Gideon's sweet, adorable face a bittersweet smile and so lovingly stroked his fingers along the top and back of Gideon's soft little head of auburn hair, "Ohh, I so selfishly want to stay..."
"You can afford to stay for a bit, dad, I'm sure Oliver will understand," Koko mumbled cutely.
"It's not everyday one of us has the extraordinary honor of filling your shoes, dad," Tessa eased with a world of sweetness, she bugged her eyes and shrugged, "Which... Is NEARLY an impossible task, but, today... Oliver surely made you very proud."
"He's the greatest," Ralph grumbled cutely as he gave Tessa and Koko a loving smile, to which he returned it to Gideon's innocent little face, "All my kids are."
"... What, am I just a vessel for said greatness then?" Vanellope stabbed with a giggle that easily erupted from Koko's and Tessa's figures as well, "Am I just chopped liver, here? Birthing all these AMAZING children Your Majesty?"
"You know I'd be nowhere without you," Ralph grunted, he pushed a few firm kisses into the side of Vanellope's face and head. He heaved a tired, happy sigh and couldn't take his eyes away from Gideon's irresistibly cute aura and demeanor, "Alright, Gid... I gotta go rescue your big brother so you can meet him."
"You can hold me all night, when you get home!" Vanellope stated in a soft, high pitched little voice as she daintily waggled Gideon's little wrecking hand about; everyone cutely laughed at the sight.
"Deal," Ralph grunted with a nod as he hesitantly pushed himself to a stand, "Man, Felix better be on his A-game today, cause I'll be entirely unstoppable."
