Chapter 34

Hello guys! I am back with another chapter. Something new is starting in this chapter. Hope you enjoy. :)

Jay had joined work already, Hailey would be resuming the following day. Thank God, she thought. She needed something to keep her mind of off her boyfriend. It always took a while to form a habit and she was waiting impatiently for the day when she could be completely immersed in her work and not worry about Jay. Jay himself was facing similar problems, Hailey was on his mind all the time.

Jay entered the district and everyone welcomed him back and enquired about Hailey. To their relief she was fine and the team got to work. As usual they had to catch a gruesome criminal who had done something beyond imagination. The day went in trying to bust this prick but ultimately he was in cuffs and thrown into prison. As the unit was leaving Voight called out to Jay and asked to speak with him. Jay entered his Sergeant's office. He was tired and longing to speak to Hailey, but he had to do this.

"Sit down Jay," Voight told him.

He obliged and looked at Voight with a neutral expression. Voight began, "How's Hailey?"

"She's fine Sarge. She's joining back work tomorrow," he said.

"You don't seem too happy about that Jay," Voight observed.

Jay hesitated, but spoke, "She's just recovering and I don't think she should be in a hurry to get back to work, considering all that we actually do."

Voight smiled briefly and said, "I'm sure that's true. But she's probably in a rush to get back to work because that's how she can keep her mind of off things."

Jay looked at Voight sharply and asked, "What do you mean?"

"What I mean is that I know both of you very well," he replied matter-of-factly.

Jay was still not certain what Voight meant but he sensed that Voight knew something. Voight spoke again, "Are you and Hailey a thing again?"

At that Jay was both shocked and relieved, this man literally knew everything. There was no point in hiding anything now, more so because his girlfriend was in New York because of their relationship. So he replied normally, "Yes, Sarge. Hailey and I are together."

"Hm," Voight replied.

"Why though," Jay dared to ask.

"I was having thoughts of bringing her back, but maybe not just yet," Voight concluded, speaking more to himself.

At those words Jay's ears shot up. He looked at his Sergeant with a ray of hope in his eyes. If Hailey came back here he would be the happiest man. He dared to ask, "Because of our relationship?"

Voight looked at him and Jay got his answer. It was because of their relationship. Voight spoke again, "Jay, just be happy. This job is just a job. What you have with her is more precious."

Jay had to agree, Voight was right. He continued, "If it has to happen, she'll be back here. Let it be."

Jay nodded, knowing that it wasn't a good idea to push more. He realised in that moment it didn't matter where he was or where Hailey was, but as long as they were one it was enough to get through anything.

The following morning the team was present in the district again, except Jay. Nobody seemed to know where he was and Voight was worried if he had done something stupid after yesterday's conversation. The team nonetheless got to work and Voight went to his office and called someone.

"Hey, Hailey. Have you heard from Jay?"

Hailey was firstly surprised to receive a call from Voight and secondly about Jay. She answered still understanding what was happening, "Uh, no Sarge. I haven't heard from him. Is he okay?"

Her heart was beating fast now and she was worried all of a sudden. Voight answered diplomatically, "Yeah, he must be."

"He's not at the district?" she enquired trying to get more details about this sudden problem.

"No," Voight said.

He could already hear her sighing. She was already tensed and worried. He spoke, "Hailey, listen to me. There's nothing to worry about, he's probably on his way."

Hailey nodded, still uncertain. Voight spoke again, "Good luck on your day back."

For a moment Hailey didn't seem to understand what he was referring to, but when she did she replied back genuinely, "Thank you Sarge."

And they hung up, Hailey worried and Voight worried as well. Both of them knew Jay was not one to behave in this manner but here they were, no one knew anything. Because even Hailey didn't know anything, Voight was certain something was up. And because Voight too didn't seem to know anything Hailey was highly convinced that something was fishy and she didn't like this feeling one bit. It had barely been twenty four hours since they had separated but within that span of time no one seemed to know where Jay was.

What was going on?

And we come to the end of this chapter. Hope you enjoyed it, because brace yourselves, the following chapters are going to be quite intense. Thank you for reading. Feel free to comment. :)
