Chapter XXXV

The last week of Sofia's summer holiday was spent with Arizona. Callie had been extremely busy with work and her research. Her idea had been Patented and it had caused her work to gain some serious momentum. The first human trials had started and it had been as exciting as tiring to juggle everything that was coming her way. She could have left a lot of the work she was doing to Emma or even to Liebermann, but she wanted to do it herself.

She was engulfed in writing up her notes when she got a page. Callie got up and made her way to the OR, where Emma had paged her to. She held a mask in front of her face when she entered.

"What's up?"

Emma looked up at Callie and smiled. "We've got another one," she said.

"It wasn't me this time," Benjamin Lieberman butted in before Emma could explain the situation. He seemed slightly relieved next to being amused by the situation.

Callie raised an eyebrow and looked at the spot Emma was nodding her head at. "My intern drilled a hole in the table," Emma said, her voice stern. "Can you please jump in and show her how it's done?"

"Every single year," Callie muttered, slightly amused. She turned around to scrub in and quickly made her way over to the table. Since Emma was stuck working on the patient's shoulder with the aid of Lieberman, she needed Callie to deal with the intern who was working on the leg together with one of Callie's least favorite residents.

She swooped in and quickly made work of reversing the drill and getting it out of the table and the patient's leg. "Are you gonna stand there or do you want to watch how it's done?" She asked the intern, who had stepped way back after her mistake.

"Sorry, Dr. Torres," the young woman said before moving back to the table.

Callie took her time explaining what exactly the intern had done wrong and showed her how to fix it. She even let her finish up what Callie had started. Maybe it was because Callie was happy with her life, or maybe it was her devotion to the job, but she was nothing but nice and patient with the new intern.

"Thank you, Torres," Emma said. Even though it was not visible from behind her mask, Callie could see the blonde was smiling.

It was not until a little while later when Callie was getting a much-needed coffee, that she ran into Emma again. The blonde was plopped down on the couch, reading a magazine.

"Hey," Callie said before closing the door behind her. "How are you?" She walked over to the coffee machine.

"I'm fine," Emma replied. She put her magazine down and sat up as Callie sat down in the chair next to the sofa.

Callie eyed the blonde and slightly squinted her eyes. She had a feeling Emma was not fine, but she did not want to push her too much. Emma caught her stare but did not flinch so Callie just sipped her coffee.

Emma sighed and closed her eyes for a moment. "I'm an ass," she said, making Callie look up at her in confusion.

"What did you do?"

"I shouldn't have been so rude to Hastings. She's only an intern." Emma pursed her lips. "I saw Anne's new girlfriend this morning. She was dropping off her lunch and they were all cozy and….well, it annoyed me."

"Couldn't have been easy," Callie commented.

"You know…" Emma started. "I've been wanting her to move on, just to get her off my back. And now she has, I get all weird about it. What's wrong with me?"

Callie chuckled. "There's nothing wrong with you. You just need to get out there yourself, whenever you're ready." She took another sip from her coffee before continuing. "I think you're being too hard on yourself. You are allowed to feel things, you know?"

She had been where Emma was. Albeit that she was the one doing the dating, but even so, it had still been tough to see her ex-wife at work every day. It had made her feel all kinds of things and it had been far from easy.

"I don't know why it's getting to me now though. It's been a long time since our divorce. It makes no sense."

"Still, you feel whatever you feel. It's not like you can control it." It was actually kind of funny Callie was giving this advice to Emma. She, herself, was a control freak. But on the other hand, she had become a bit of an expert on situations like this.

"How did you do it?"

"I didn't," Callie responded. "I was the first one dating after the divorce. But I saw Arizona's looks. It could not have been easy on her. We...ah…we managed though. And so will you."

The situation between Arizona and her was different, they were raising a child together. But it did once more get Callie thinking about how lucky she was. Arizona had been so good to her and Sofia. They had both made mistakes, they had both hurt each other, but somehow they had stuck together. Arizona had stuck with her, as a friend and a damn good co-parent.

Callie started to realize more and more what kind of serious commitment Arizona was showing to Sofia and her. Yes, her ex-wife had a great job opportunity lined up here in New York, but she had still decided to move all the way across the country for her family.

"Talking of Anne," Callie started, sitting up straight. "I ran into her the other day. She was at the bar with her girlfriend." She was not going to say she thought that Anne's new girlfriend looked a lot like Emma. "It was a little awkward, but she came over and introduced her to us. Arizona was with me."

The blonde raised an eyebrow at the bunch of information she just received. The look she gave Callie made the dark-haired woman wonder whether she should have brought it up. But there was nothing like the truth. She would have wanted Emma to tell her had the roles been reversed.

"She seems nice," Callie mused. "But Anne just made it awkward. I sometimes seriously wonder what you ever saw in her."

Emma chuckled. "That makes two of us. I guess it's just going to take some getting used to."

"It's still her loss, Caplan. You are awesome."

"Thanks, Callie," Emma said after a moment of silence. She eyed her friend and a smirk appeared on her face. "You would make a good shrink," she added in an amused tone.

The dark-haired woman threw her head back in laughter. "Yeah, no," she could not help but chuckle though. "I like breaking bones too much."

Emma grinned. "And somehow Psych Goddess doesn't sound half a good."

She was glad Emma seemed to be feeling better. Emma probably meant more to Callie than the blonde realized and she would rather see Emma happy. "More like Psycho Goddess," she murmured with a chuckle. "Yeah, that's never happening."

"So," Emma started. "Is it weird to say I'm looking forward to doing Yankee duty with you this weekend?" She looked at Callie, a faint smile on her lips. "It's been a while since we worked together."

Callie smiled back at Emma. "That's it!"

The blonde raised her eyebrow, obviously not catching on to Callie's train of thought. "What's what now?"

Emma's remark had just given Callie a great idea. "I was trying to think of something nice to show my gratitude to Arizona. She…well, I mean, she made a big change with the move. I want to show her I appreciate her."

"That sounds great, but I still have no idea what you're talking about," Emma replied, looking slightly amused.

When Callie got an idea, she would hop on a train of thought and zip out of the station like the Roadrunner. Not a lot of people managed to catch on. Emma calling her back made Callie chuckle, realizing just what she was doing. "I'm going to get Yankee tickets. I'll take Arizona and Sofia to a game, I bet they'll like that."

"Oh," Emma was finally catching on. "That sounds like a great idea."

After the idea had hit her, Callie had made some calls and had secured Yankees Inside Experience tickets for all three of them. They would spend game day getting a tour of the Stadium, meeting some of the players, and with field-level seats to the game. She had also ordered personalized jerseys for Arizona and Sofia, to complete the experience.

The tickets and jerseys had arrived at her office today and she was looking forward to clocking out and bringing the gift over. It was her turn to take Sofia and she would be picking her daughter up tonight. It would be Sofia's last weekend off before the new school year started and Callie was sure it was going to be a special one.

She could barely contain her excitement when she made the track up to Arizona's apartment. It led to her standing in front of the blonde's door with a megawatt, beaming smile.

"Well, hi," Arizona said. Callie's smile was so infectious, it made her dimples pop. "Come on in."

Sofia was in the living room and got up to greet her mother. "Hi, mama."

"Hey, baby. How was your week?"

"It was good! We had a lot of fun."

When Arizona joined them, Callie held up the bag she was carrying. "So….I have a surprise for the both of you."

Sofia jumped up and down in excitement and Arizona eyed Callie carefully when she handed Sofia a neatly wrapped gift. The young Torres quickly made work of opening the gift and Callie turned to Arizona. "I have something for you too."

The blonde raised her eyebrow, completely surprised by the gesture. She took the gift from Callie and flashed her a questioning look.

"Just because," Callie said softly while Arizona unwrapped her gift. Her heart fluttered slightly at seeing the almost childlike happiness on Arizona's face at seeing the gift. The blonde took off her blazer and top without thinking, standing in front of Callie in just a white camisole while unfolding the jersey to put it on. Callie's eyes seemed momentarily glued to Arizona before she averted her gaze, shifting uncomfortably while not knowing where to look.

Arizona was clueless to Callie's discomfort and only focused her attention back on her ex-wife once she finished putting on the jersey. She looked super happy and excited.

"It uh…it looks great on you," Callie said after clearing her throat. Her cheeks slightly flushed while she was still trying to force herself to get a grip.

They were interrupted by a squeal from Sofia. "It has my name on it! This is so cool!"

Arizona posed in her jersey. "Is this your way of welcoming us to New York?"

Sofia was busy putting on her jersey, spinning around the room like the Tasmanian Devil.

"It's a thank you, Arizona," Callie spoke quietly. "For all you do." She handed Arizona an envelope. "I hope you'll join us."

"There's more?" Arizona looked at Callie expectantly. It was obvious from the look on her face that she was completely surprised.

The second gift had also caught Sofia's attention and the girl came speeding over. "Open it, mommy!"

"You didn't!" Arizona looked up at Callie once she saw what was in the envelope. "Callie, these tickets cost a fortune."

"What is it, mommy?"

"It looks like we are going to the game tomorrow, Sofia," Arizona said with a bright smile. "Mama got us all special tickets."

Another squeal came from Sofia. "Oh wow!" The little girl ran off to circle the apartment chanting 'Yankees game here we come'.

"Callie," Arizona started, but she did not get to finish her sentence.

"It's nothing, Arizona. I pulled a few strings. I just…I wanted to do something nice for you, something for the three of us."

"Well, in that case," Arizona paused as they watched Sofia zip by, still high on energy from the surprise. "You nailed it."

Callie smiled brightly. Without really thinking about it, she leaned in and planted a gentle peck on Arizona's cheek. "Just…thank you," she whispered.

Sofia launched herself at Callie and demanded her mother's attention, which prevented Callie from noticing the pink blush that crept up on Arizona's cheek.
