Spencer was discharged in the early morning, and the father and son went back to Rossi's mansion. Both were incredibly tired, having woken up at least once every half hour. They both stumbled through the door and practically passed out once they got to Morgan's bed.
When Spencer woke up later that morning, his father was still sleeping next to him. He decided to let his dad keep sleeping since they had had so many nightmares throughout the night. After carefully sliding out of the bed, he made his way into Rossi's large kitchen.
His stomach growled, and he looked around for something to make for breakfast. After searching through the pantry, he found a large bag of pancake mix. He smiled at the thought of surprising his father and uncle with breakfast. He immediately began working to make the pancakes for all three people in the house. Being the small boy he was, it wasn't exactly easy. He had to climb up on a chair and then onto the counter to be able to reach the stove and all of the other materials he needed.
After mixing together the ingredients, he poured the batter onto the hot pan. While he waited to flip them, a small beeping noise caught his attention. He turned to see Rossi's coffee pot full, having been on an automatic timer. Curious, he grabbed a mug and poured himself a cup.
He took a sip of the drink and made a face of disgust. "Eck!" It was bitter and gross, so he went to put it back, but noticed a jar of sugar sitting next to the coffee machine. He dumped practically half of the jar into the mug, wanting to see if it would fix the gross taste. He cautiously took another sip, and smiled when he tasted nothing but sugary goodness. "Mmmm… much better!"
He continued to drink his coffee and flip pancakes until he heard footsteps coming down the hallway. A half asleep Morgan walked into the kitchen, and immediately woke up when he saw his young son sat next to the stove. "Spencer!"
He ran up and swifty took the boy off the counter, placing him gently on the floor. "What were you doing!"
Spencer bounced on the balls of his feet, not noticing his father's panic. "I made us pancakes! I didn't want to wake you up because you were sleeping so I let you sleep and came out and made pancakes!"
"That was very nice of you buddy, but you can't use the stove without an adult. You're not in trouble, but just don't do it again."
"Oh, okay. I'm sorry." Spencer responded, but after analyzing his father's face, he realized he really wasn't in trouble and continued talking. "Did you know that the world's largest pancake measured 15.01 meters in diameter and 2.5 centimeters deep! And, and did you know that the highest pancake toss ever measured was 9.47 meters!" The boy said quickly, seemingly in one breath.
Morgan was confused by his son's energy at first, but then realized what was going on when he saw the empty mug sitting on the counter. "Spencer, did you have coffee?"
"Yeah! At first it was really gross and bitter but then I put some sugar in it and it was really, really good!"
Morgan pinched the bridge of his nose. "Oh good lord…"
Suddenly, the smoke detector started loudly beeping due to the smoke coming off of the now burning pancakes. Spencer let out a fearful yelp and ran to Morgan, wrapping his arms around his legs and hiding his face in them. Morgan rubbed his back reassuringly. "It's okay bud, it's just the smoke detector."
"The smoke detector?" He questioned, peeking out from behind his legs.
Morgan nodded and moved away from Spencer to take the smoking pan off the stove. He ran the pan under cold water and waved his hand around in the air to try and get rid of the smoke. "Do you know what a smoke detector is?"
Spencer, no longer scared by the beeping, nodded energetically. "Uh huh! A fire detector is a fire-protection device that automatically detects and gives a warning of the presence of smoke." Spencer rattled off, as if reading from a book.
Morgan chuckled to himself. "That's right bud."
"I've never heard one before. I've only read about them before. They sound scarier than I thought they would be."
"Yeah, they're kind of scary, huh." Spencer nodded. He had started bouncing from foot to foot again from the caffeine running through him.
Rossi walked in the room then, rubbing his eyes. "The house better be on fire. I was having a wonderful dream involving wife number 3..." He grumbled.
Morgan let out a laugh. "No, Spencer just decided to make pancakes and some burned."
"Sorry Uncle Dave..." Spencer said quietly.
"It's alright bambino." Rossi said as he dragged himself further into the room.
Spencer smiled up at Rossi, but as he walked closer the smile fell. Right when the older man sat down at the kitchen island, the little boy scrambled up on a chair and grabbed his face, examining his bruised nose. "What happened?!"
Rossi has completely forgotten about the hit to the nose, otherwise he would have tried to hide it. "Oh, I uh… uhm…" He looked over to Morgan for help, who just nodded to him. "I made a silly decision yesterday when you were having a nightmare. I grabbed your hand because you were hurting yourself and-"
He was cut off by a high pitched gasp as Spencer let go of his face like it burned him. "I hit you! Oh no I hit you! I'm so sorry Uncle Dave! I don't remember! I don't remember, I promise! I'm so sorry!"
Spencer began tearing up and tried to get off the chair, but was grabbed by Morgan who pulled him into a hug. "Shh baby Uncle Dave knows you're sorry."
Rossi scooted closer and held the boy's hand. "Your dad's right bambino. I know you didn't mean it. You were scared and thought you were in the basement. I completely forgive you."
Spencer's bottom lip poked out as he gently touched the bruising on his uncle's nose. "I'm still really sorry…"
"I'm glad you did it." Said Morgan bluntly.
Spencer turned to him with a face of utter disbelief. "But I hurt Uncle Dave!" He exclaimed, pointing his tiny finger at Rossi.
"Yes, but you thought it was Hobbs. You were trying to protect yourself and fight back, which is a good thing."
Spencer looked confused, but accepted it anyway. "Okay… can I get Uncle Dave an ice pack?"
Morgan chuckled. "Sure thing kiddo."
Spencer hopped off of Morgan's lap and ran into the freezer in search of an ice pack.
Morgan turned to Rossi with a smirk on his face. "He really hit you hard huh?"
"Yeah, but luckily it's just bruising." Answered Rossi, poking slightly at his nose.
"Would've been funny if a 5 year old broke an FBI agent's nose."
Rossi rolled his eyes. "Yeah yeah laugh it up."
Spencer came running back with a green bag covered in frost. He hopped up on the chair and carefully pressed it to his uncle's nose. "I couldn't find an ice pack so I got frozen peas. It should work the same." Rossi took the peas from Spencer, keeping them pressed to his nose. The little boy sat back before speaking again, quieter this time. "I really am sorry Uncle Dave…"
Rossi opened one of his arms, the other still pressing the cold veggies to his face. "It's okay bambino. Come here."
Spencer jumped into Dave's lap, and his uncle gave him a big bear hug. "I do believe someone mentioned pancakes? I think if I was woken up early I should at least be fed." Rossi joked.
"Uh huh! I only burnt some of them!" Spencer responded excitedly.
He jumped down from his chair and ran to grab the plate of completed pancakes. They were oddly shaped, but surprisingly well cooked. Morgan and Rossi had to rush to follow him as the boy sped into the dining room. Spencer set the full plate down on the table before pulling out two chairs. "Sit! Sit!"
The two adults sat and watched with amusement as the boy ran back and forth between the dining room and kitchen, first bringing in plates, then silverware, syrup, and two cups of coffee, which he carefully handed to his dad and uncle.
He ran back to the kitchen one last time before coming back with a steaming cup of coffee for himself. He sat down across from the two men, placing the mug on the table carefully so as not to spill the precious drink. He smiled up at his dad and uncle, proud that he made them a nice breakfast.
"Thank you, Spencer, for making us breakfast." Rossi said. "But, uh, I don't think you should be drinking coffee..."
Spencer cocked his head to the side. "Why?"
"It's not good for kids, bud." Morgan answered for him.
"Oh… why?" The boy asked.
Morgan and Rossi looked at each other, hoping the other would have an answer.
"Is it 'cause it has a lot of caffeine and caffeine can increase a person's heart rate and blood pressure? And I'm small so it will be even worse for me?" Spencer said innocently.
Morgan let out a chuckle. "Yeah, buddy, that's exactly why."
"Oh, okay. I can still have pancakes though, right?"
Morgan placed a few pancakes onto the boy's plate. "Yes, you can definitely have some pancakes."
Spencer started bouncing in his seat, watching with excitement as his dad poured a large amount of syrup on his pancakes. Rossi subtly moved the coffee cup away from the young boy.
All three ate their breakfast, the two adults drinking their coffee, until all of the pancakes were gone. Rossi finished his coffee, and decided to just drink Spencer's cup since he didn't want it to go to waste. He took a sip, and immediately made a face at the extremely sweet taste of the normally bitter liquid.
"Oh my god, what did you put in here? A gallon of sugar?" Rossi exclaimed.
"No, I would estimate it to be about a cup and a half." Spencer responded seriously.
Morgan choked on a laugh and Dave scowled at him. "And you liked it with that much sugar?"
"Uh huh! It was gross before." The boy said, making a face of disgust at the memory of the bitter liquid.
Rossi whistles. "Good luck with this one, Derek. He's got quite the sweet tooth."
"Sweet tooth?" Spencer questioned, bringing his finger to his mouth, rubbing it along his baby teeth.
The two adults laughed, confusing Spencer even more. "It's just a saying pretty boy." Morgan stood and lifted the boy up, placing him on his hip. "Let's go get you cleaned up. Hopefully this rich old man knows how to wash dishes." Derek joked.
Spencer giggled. "Haha very funny." Rossi said with a glare as the father and son left the room.
