Jay sighed as he opened the fridge to see what he could make for breakfast. He groaned when he realized he only had two eggs left and half a bottle of milk. He had really wanted to make Kai a good breakfast, especially with what happened yesterday. The Smith siblings hadn't spoken a word to each other since Wendy had shown up and it was incredibly awkward for everyone. Before, when they were arguing about the baby at the base, there was a lot of space for them to work through their issues.
But now they were all stuffed into Jay's apartment.
There weren't even enough beds for everyone staying there. Jay had to sleep on the sofa so the girls and Kai could sleep in a comfortable bed. He sighed and thought it'd be best to make Kai some fried eggs and go grocery shopping later. As he watched the eggs sizzle and cook he noticed movement out the corner of his eye. Jay turned and almost jumped when he saw Kai standing in the kitchen with him. He was wearing red, striped pajamas and pink bunny slippers.
His usually spikey hair was a shaggy mess and he still looked like he hadn't slept in days.
Regardless, Jay thought he looked cute and possibly glowing, but that might have been because of the pregnancy.
"Oh, I wasn't expecting you up so soon." He chuckled, blushing slightly as he took in the brunette's appearance.
"I need to start getting back into a proper routine." He yawned. "What you cooking?"
"I'm making you some fried eggs, I'm sorry I have nothing else."
"It's fine, I can go to the store and get some stuff if you want?"
"Alright, but, um, are you sure you're ok after... what happened the other day?" He asked carefully, scared he was going to say something wrong and upset him.
"Sitting around brooding won't help." Kai shrugged as Jay placed the freshly cooked eggs on a plate and handed it to him.
"You can always have another hour's sleep if you want," Jay suggested.
"I'd rather keep myself busy." He admitted and started devouring the eggs like they were the tastiest thing on Earth...
Nya sighed as she stirred the spoon in her soggy cereal as Skylor stared daggers at her as they sat on the couch. Kai had gone out to get some more milk because he noticed they were running out. Jay told him that it wasn't a problem but the brunette was insistent that he got some space and fresh air. The two siblings barely gave each other a sideways glance as he left the sanctuary of the apartment. It was a very tense atmosphere in Jay's apartment.
"Talk to him." Skylor suddenly said.
"I have nothing else to say that I didn't say yesterday." Nya huffed.
"You could start by apologizing."
"Why? He wanted me to be honest, so I was." She glared as Jay entered the room after getting dressed. "It might have been hard but it's better than telling him what he wants to hear!"
"Well if it was me I'd expect you to stand by me, not turn you back," Jay added as he got his coat on, noticing Kai was taking a long time and wanted to make sure he was alright. "He needs your support Nya."
"Jay, just leave it." Skylor requested as politely as he could.
"Happy too, maybe you can talk some sense into her." He replied as he left the two girls alone to talk.
"You know we're right." She repeated to the noirette.
"I don't want him or his mom hanging around Kai and they will if they ever find out he's having Morro's baby, so why would he risk it?!"
"That's not your choice."
"Kai's too shaken up to be thinking straight!" She argued. "It's up to the rest of us to help him see it like it is."
"Well you're not going to do that by walking away from him, are you?" Skylor quizzed, trying to make her friend see sense. "In the end, Nya, it needs to be his decision and we need to stand by him."
"I can't."
"I don't get it." She groaned in frustration. "Kai and I went through pretty much the same thing, in fact, he had it worse than me, and you're not abandoning me, so why do that to your own brother?"
"Because you're trying to put the nightmare behind you, he seems determined to make it worse." She snapped before scrapping the remains of her breakfast into the trash and storming off to get a shower. Skylor sighed as she slumped into the couch, hoping the siblings would patch things up again soon...
Kai sighed as he slowly walked back to the apartment, a fresh bottle of milk clutched tightly in his hands. It was nice going to the store, with no one knowing what had happened to him and staring at him with pitiful eyes. It felt he'd rejoined the human race and could put Morro out of his mind, even if it was only for a few minutes. He knew that would stop when he returned to the apartment. With Nya constantly telling him to get rid of Morro's baby or Skylor and Jay's sympathetic looks and gestures, he felt like he was being suffocated.
He knew they were all trying to help him in their own way, but all he wanted was to move on, not having his friends and family constantly worrying and hovering around.
He hoped they all realized that soon. He didn't want to spend this whole pregnancy stressed out. It wasn't healthy for him or his baby. As he crossed the road and was only a few feet away from the door, a familiar car pulled into the parking lot. Kai felt his stomach drop as Wendy climbed out of the car and she started to approach him.
"Stay away from me." He ordered as he almost ran for the door, but for an older woman, she was faster and blocked his path.
"Just hear me out!" She pleaded. "We need to talk!"
"No! I've got nothing to say to you or your son!"
"Not until you listen!" She explained, not letting him pass. "There are things I have to say!"
"I wouldn't even want to talk to you after your son... forced himself on me." He spat out, like just saying the words were like swallowing the vilest poison.
"Why do you keep saying that? My Morro wouldn't do such a thing!" She cried before her face crumpled into an angry glare. "Maybe the truth is you wanted to keep this baby for yourself! It could have been any man!"
"Leave me alone!" Kai shouted as he tried to push past her, but she was stronger than she looked.
"No, I can't do that because that baby is my grandchild and I look after my own!"
"There isn't gonna be a baby, I'm getting an abortion!"
"Don't do that!" She pleaded, the desperation clear in her tired eyes. "If you keep it there's a loving family wanting to help you, there's money if you need it!"
"You're sick!" He growled as he finally got past her, but she grabbed his arm.
"I know you hate Morro, but that baby's innocent in all of this." She begged, not wanting to lose her unborn grandchild.
"HEY!" Someone suddenly shouted and they all turned to see Jay running towards them. "What the hell are you doing back here?! Why can't you just leave him alone?!" He growled as Wendy released Kai's arm.
"I'm not trying to hurt him, I-I just want to help with the baby."
"You're wasting your time! 'Cause, there ain't gonna be a baby!" Kai snapped.
"Listen, after what your son did this is harassment, now get out of here before I have you arrested and thrown in the same cell with that monster you call Morro!" Jay snarled and Wendy's eyes widened in terror as she speed-walked back to her car. "You ok?" Jay asked, pulling Kai into a hug as she drove away.
"Yeah, as long as she believes that I'm getting rid of the baby then she won't bother me," Kai replied, hoping that would be the last he saw of her as he all but ran up to the apartment. Jay sighed as he followed the brunette up, casting one last withering look at Wendy's car as it disappeared around the corner...
