A/N: This story has been a great experience to write. I couldn't have gotten through it without all your reviews and encouragement. I thank you all for coming on this journey with me. I decided to split the finale into two chapters, this one is a cliffhanger (I know), but I won't keep you waiting long. I thought long and hard about this.
This story was to always be focused on Olivia, with Olitz endgame. Her rise to accomplish her goal as a woman in a man's field of Secret Service. She did this despite her loss of her parents. She is an exceptional agent and was once a decorated police officer. She had the conflict of living her dream and falling in love. This chapter will remind us that getting the best of the worlds you wanted doesn't always work out for the best, and your past always comes back to haunt you.
Chapter 34—Finale Part One
Olivia jumped out of her sound slumber. It wasn't from a nightmare, usually it was, it was just a motherly instinct. She remembered Little G being in between her and Fitz. The last thing she remembered was massaging his little head of curls and kissing Fitz, before drifting off to sleep.
Now, jumping out of her sleep she was afraid she and Fitz fell asleep with G beside them. That was a no no. She looked to her right to a surprisingly empty bed. Of course, Fitz wouldn't let something like that happen. She heard some grunts and gurgles coming from little G and some humming coming from Fitz.
Over by the window, still dark outside, Fitz stood rocking his son, as his son's head rested peacefully on Fitz's shoulder. He was almost asleep, and Liv felt such security at that very moment. Their child was cuddled safely in his father's arms. Liv walked over to the window and Fitz pulled her to his side with his free arm.
He kissed her gently on the temple, but never stopped the rhythm of rocking. G was almost out. Liv rocked with him and for once, finally, she felt like a little family. No phones ringing, no schedules, and no interruptions. Just the three of them, staring out the window, the lights from the White House glowing the dark sky. Liv just closed her eyes against Fitz's chest and took it all in.
"Thank you for letting me get some rest, although you need it more than me. I didn't realize how tired I was. Has he been up all this time?"
"Livvie, you don't have to thank me. We are in this together. Yeah, he's been stubborn. Once you fell asleep, he woke up. But that's ok, I had some good daddy time with him. We had a nice talk." Fitz began walking to the nursery, as G was fast asleep now.
"Oh really, a nice talk about what?" Liv asked curiously.
"Just about how mommy is going to get spoiled the next few days while we take our mini vacation. Speaking of you have some packing to do. You fell asleep before we did any."
Liv almost forgot. They were going to Camp David for three days before the rush of the campaign. Only two months until election day, and even tough it seemed Fitz had a second term locked up, you could never be too careful.
Fitz began going through Little G's clothes and Liv swatted at his hand. "No way Mister. If I let you pack for Garrison, he'll have more clothes than a small country for three days. Go get your things together while I take care of this."
"Fine, but at least three daddy shirts in there Livvie." He grabbed Liv's chin and kissed her tenderly on her lips. "And hurry up, that empty bed looks lonely."
In little under an hour, all the bags needed to go into the motorcade were by the door. They both fell comfortable into their bed and faced one another. "2 a.m. and all packed to go. We seem to do our best work at night, Livvie." He put his arm around her, resting it on her back as she drew him in for a kiss.
Fitz's hand quickly moved to the strap on her top and pulled it down her shoulder to expose her breast. Liv's head was already tilted back, waiting in anticipation to feel his soft lips engulf her awaiting breast. As his head aimed to her breast, she guided him, just to rub his curls as her other hand moved in circular motions on his back. Fitz groaned with pleasure.
He turned his body now, so he was directly on top of her. Looking into each other's eyes, he caressed her cheek with the back of his hand. "I cannot wait to be a family with you, a normal, not in the spotlight family with you Liv. I can just call this quits you know. Pull out of the race, concede and….
Liv put her finger on his lips. "Fitz, no, I didn't come into your life for you to give all this up. If you get re elected we are going through the next four years" ….she paused…"together"…
"Together." He repeated as his lips went from her neck to her chest down to her stomach and reached her very wet fold. Fitz wasted no time to thrust his tongue deep inside her as her back arched in pleasure. Liv had nothing to do but enjoy and rub her hands through his hair pushing him deeper in to her.
Fitz felt her closing in, felt her thighs tighten, and her heavy breaths led into a deep moan and he put his hand on her stomach as her orgasm hit her hard. He came back up and did what she loved best, he kissed her deeply as she tasted herself and with a quick thrust pushed himself into her entrance.
He loved how wet she was, after her orgasm, but was still able to grip him. She never disappointed him, and he loved how weak she was for him. She had to pull out of the kiss and arch her head back as he continued to push deeper inside of her. God, she will never get enough of this man.
She felt his body tighten as his breathing became deeper and she went in for her kiss. She drew his lips to her once again and let their tongues ride out their orgasms together. Fitz lay on top of her for a few minutes his head deep in her neck. Finally, he broke the silence. "I love you so much Livvie."
As her hand rubbed his back up and down, she replied "I love you too, Mr. President." He rolled off her and took her into her arms where she fell fast asleep on his chest. He gently caressed her hair and fell asleep not soon after.
Simultaneously, Fitz's alarm went off at 6 am and his phone started buzzing at the same time. He turned off the alarm, not ready to wake Olivia just yet. He noticed Cyrus calling on the phone. This can't be good news, this early.
"What is it, Cyrus? I should be down in a half hour. Remember, only a half day today for me."
"Sir, Fletcher Guthrie. He's out. He escaped from the Missouri Federal Prison this morning. There is no sign of him. I am going to beg of you not to go anywhere with the family."
Fitz closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "No, Cyrus, I am not going to stop my plans for a psycho on the loose, especially Fletcher Guthrie. I am the most protected man on Earth, gather the Secret Service in the Oval for 7 am. Have the three major news outlets on standby also." Fitz ended the call. He was very concerned, but he wouldn't let Cyrus know.
He turned to Liv who had her back to him. She hadn't moved, she was still sound asleep. He walked to the nursery, checked on Little G, who was out just like his mother. He went into the shower to calm his nerves.
Liv wasn't asleep as he was talking to Cyrus. She heard his end of the conversation. Everyone who paid attention in law enforcement knew who Fletcher Guthrie was. He was a serial killer having killed dozens in three different states. He was caught, not on a murder charge, but on an attempted murder charge.
Fletcher had attempted to kill the former president by killing a reporter and stealing his credentials. He made it all the way to the South Lawn and had a gun inside his camera. The only reason the attempt was thwarted was another reporter read the name on Fletcher's tag and alerted Secret Service. As Secret Service approached, Fletcher fired one shot and while all were taking cover, he took off.
He didn't make it far though in DC because Metro PD were on alert and on the lookout. Two officers stationed not far from the White House were able to take Fletcher down, one of those officers, Olivia Pope. Once in custody, all the evidence and investigations linked him to the murders of five women in three states.
Hearing Fitz say the name, she was certain now that he had received death threats from Fletcher or someone from his cult following. Liv closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Could they ever be normal?
Hearing the shower stop and Fitz getting dressed, Liv rolled around and faced Fitz as he came out ready to leave. When he saw Liv awake, he asked if he woke her up.
"No, I am used to getting up early with G. He should be getting up shortly. Is everything OK? You seem tense."
"No, I am good. Look, I may have a proposition for you. I need to speak to Burns about something, but I may need you to be an agent for a bit. Think you may be up to that?"
Liv looked at him with a very confusing look on her face. "Okay, could you go further into detail?"
"No, but asking my best agent for a favor shouldn't be a problem, right?"
"Right," Liv said reluctantly agreeing. She had a weird feeling about this.
He sat next to her on the bed. He pulled her forehead to his lips. "Be ready for noon. They'll be two motorcades. I don't want the press knowing where I am going for three days. I'll see you later. I love you."
"Love you too." Liv called Huck as soon as Fitz was out the door. She told Huck about Fletcher and wanted him to use every resource he had to try to find a location on this guy. Liv had a bad feeling in her gut, a very bad feeling.
Before she forgot, and before G woke up, she took down her lockbox. She was not going away for three days without her gun. She would do her best to keep it from Fitz and she didn't feel comfortable having it around Little G, but she wasn't taking any chances. Not when Fletcher Guthrie was on the loose.
In the Oval, Fitz and Cyrus were briefing the Secret Service members. Burns was out in Santa Barbara taking care of the Mellie situation, so Fitz took over. He wanted to be the lead on this anyway. Fitz walked to his desk and handed a pile of papers stacked in a folder to his second in charge.
Going through the letters, the detail had to create a strategy on how to proceed for the protection of the President and his family. The letters he was holding were countless death threats to Fitz dating back to when he was elected until up to a week ago. The final letter threatening Olivia and the baby along with Fitz. They were all signed from Fletcher and were confirmed to come directly from the prison he was at.
It was at that meeting Fitz learned for the first time that Olivia was one of the arresting officers. He turned angrily to Cyrus. "How did you not know this? This guy must be salivating. Getting to kill a president and his wife, who happens to be the officer that imprisoned him. Geez, Cyrus, this is not getting better."
"Which is why I am asking you to postpone the…."
"Stop", Fitz quickly said. "I am not postponing anything." He looked at everyone. "Go work on your strategy, and report back here in an hour, let me and Cy have the room, please."
Little G was up and ready by 730 a m. Olivia dressed him and became even more alarmed when two more Secret Service agents joined the residence along with the four already in place. She motioned for Eriks to come over. "What is this all about Eriks, and don't dance around, it's me you are speaking to."
"Ma'am, direct orders from the president. Three detail for you, three detail for Garrison. That's all I know for now. You'll have to speak to President Grant to find out anything else." He closed his lips and walked away.
Liv held Little G on her hip as Abby entered the residence. She was stopped by Santiago who searched her. Liv hurried over and pushed Santiago's hand down. "What the hell, Santiago, she was already checked three times if she's in the residence already. What the hell is going on?"
"Ma'am, just orders….
"Yeah, orders from the President. I know." She grabbed G's bag and pointed Abby to turn and head towards her office. All six-detail following. Three in front and three in back.
Abby looked at her curiously. "Don't ask. I have no idea", she lied. She didn't want anyone except for Huck knowing what she knew. Her gun was tucked safely on her ankle holster. She wasn't letting G out of her sight, though, that was for sure. Once down to her office, she asked Loretta to please come to the office. Abby went to her own office to cancel the appointments Liv had for the next three days.
Back in the Oval, Fitz received a bit of good news, depending on who you spoke to. Good news for him, bad news for Mellie. Burns was on the phone and he was already on his way back to DC, with Mellie in tow.
Burns had all the evidence needed to hand Mellie over to the feds. Fitz instructed Burns to bring Mellie straight to the Oval. Before she went to the feds, and likely federal prison, he wanted to have a few last words with her. He also wanted Olivia to be the one to arrest her and hand her over to the FBI.
Fitz wasn't always this revengeful, but Mellie crossed the line way too much. The affairs with Andrew, the silence about her knowledge of his intentions, and now funding a domestic terrorist group. This was not going to end well for Mellie. Who better to arrest her and hand her over than his First Lady, his current wife, whom Mellie despised?
Loretta entered Olivia's office. When Olivia chose Loretta as her Chief of Staff, she did so for a reason. Loretta had been Liv's Chief on the Metro PD. It was rare for a woman to be on the police force, let alone a police chief. Even more, it was rare for the woman to be a minority.
Loretta saw so much potential in Olivia, having known her father also. She was determined to help Olivia succeed and never stopped praising her work. Even on Olivia's worst days on the force, Loretta always had something to positive to say about her job performance.
Olivia was forever grateful for everything Loretta did for her and everything Loretta taught her. She couldn't thank her enough for coming out of retirement to be her Chief of Staff. True to Loretta's beliefs, Olivia was succeeding, and she didn't want anyone else guiding her through this phase of her life.
Abby had taken G to her office, escorted by 3 service detail for a few minutes while she spoke to Loretta. Loretta was lead on the investigation and arrest of Fletcher. When Loretta sat down, she saw the concerning look in Olivia's eyes.
"Well, that is a name I never wanted to hear again", Loretta said as Liv told her what she overheard this morning. "What can I do to help, and are you sure you still want to go away from the White House with the baby?" Loretta cautioned Olivia.
"I need you to be discreet. Use some connections, acquaintances, and informants from Metro. See what they heard and what they are doing about the escape. They must be on high alert. Fletcher is a vengeful beast, he is coming to DC, it's just a matter of time. As for going away, that's in Fitz's court. If he says the word, we stay, but he's as stubborn as they come. He was never one for safe protocol. We wouldn't have met if he were a follow the rules President."
"Liv, you remember what we were told after Fletcher was in federal for a year? Therefore, I am concerned. They found pictures of you with a bullet drawn in your head, he wants you dead. Is Fitz aware of this?"
"I remember, how could I forget? I had nightmares about his face for months. Fitz is already being cautious having six agents between me and G. By the time we leave, we will have a dozen assigned, I am sure. He knows something about my history with the guy, but to what extent I don't know. I need you to make this top priority though. Don't divulge any information to me, whatever you find out get the information to Huck. He's working on this also."
Both Liv and Loretta stood up at the same time. Liv stood in front of Loretta and grabbed both her hands. "I am not going to lie Loretta, I am scared, and that's an unfamiliar feeling for me. I don't think I am scared for me, I am scared for G and for Fitz."
"Young lady, you turn that fear into courage. Don't let that criminal run your life. Enjoy your time away with your family. I won't even show you your calendar of events for when you get back. You are on full load campaign trail. Make memories with your husband before the rush of the election comes crashing in. In the meantime, I will ask around and find out information for you." She pulled Liv's forehead in for a kiss.
"I know your senses are in overdrive right now, but I also need you to be smart. Be careful with that weapon, sometimes we see things that aren't there." Loretta turned to leave the office as Abby walked back in with G. Of course Loretta knew she was carrying. She did see things that weren't there.
Fletcher Guthrie was far from any human you'd want to acquaint yourself with. He had a cult following and was in prison for numerous life sentences. Fletcher's life isn't worth elaborating on, but he kills without remorse and he wants to leave a legacy behind.
He wants to be more than a Charles Manson. He wants to be someone that leaves an evil mark on this society. For years, he has reached out to members on the outside who would work with him and eventually help him escape to back into the world to claim his legacy.
Yes, he had dozens of kills under his file, but he wanted that one that would stand out. Imagine his surprise when the woman cop who was responsible for putting him in prison married the President of the United States. This was his chance. Any amateur killer could try to assassinate the President, but who would ever think to target a First Lady? Well, here it is, time to make history. What better way to spell revenge than to target her and avenge his sentencing.
Fletcher put his plan on escaping into motion. From the time it was announced that former Metro PD Olivia Pope had married the President, Fletcher sprung into action. He ramped up his efforts to reach his contacts on the outside. Soon, there was a plan to help him escape and Fletcher dreamed of his freedom.
When the night came to begin the prison uprising, Fletcher had already spent days tracking his route to reach his goal. He wanted Olivia Pope, First Lady, and he would succeed in getting this legacy for himself. He watched as she gave birth on live TV, he watched as she participated in events for the President, and he watched as she earned her awards for being a good service agent.
He had news for her, all of her training would go to waste and her child would be left mother less, all because of one arrest: His. It was time for Olivia Pope to put down her awards, put down her gun, and be on the receiving end of the line of fire.
During the prison uprising, while all the guards were fighting off inmates, Fletcher was able to make his way to the tunnels under the prison. It smelled of sewage and crawled with rats, but his destination wasn't too far. As promised, there was a flashlight and a burner phone waiting in a diagramed place. He followed the flow of water, having now gained the stench of bathroom waste and an occasional rat bite. He loosened the crate overhead, and he was led into a forest of darkness. He found slumber behind a tree and slept until the break of dawn. He was now en route to DC, where he would greet the President and let him watch Olivia Pope suffer, just like she had made him do.
Olivia met Fitz in the Oval, as requested at 11am. She still had no idea what was going on, but when she entered the office, he handed her a pair of handcuffs.
She looked suspiciously at him. "If this has anything to do with going away with you, I will remind you, Mister, we will be in the presence of our child". She held up the handcuffs, questioning his motive.
"Oh, Livvie, the things I could do to you handcuffed to a bed post, but I won't think about that now. It will do things to me out of my control and we have work to do." He handed her a thick file, which Olivia opened and began reading with intensity.
After five minutes of silence and reading, Olivia looked up at Fitz, clearly shocked. It took a lot to shock Olivia, and this one did it. She couldn't believe Mellie was still doing things to compromise Fitz and his presidency. She used to feel a bit of compassion for the woman, but now, she deserved everything she had coming to her.
"Ok, so what does this have to do with me? Why do you need me here?"
"I have let Mellie get a way with far too much. I turned away too many times when she was unfaithful. I should've put her behind bars with her involvement with the Andrew incident, and I was a fool to think she would stop at that. She was willing to get Amelia killed to carry out an agenda that would destroy my cabinet and presidency. Here is where the buck stops, and I want you to stop it. I want you to arrest Mellie and hand her over to the Feds. I know, it sounds selfish to use you like this. I don't want you upset. There is nothing that would destroy her more if you are the arresting agent. I don't even think going to prison will bother her as much. So, will you, do it?" He looked at her with his puppy eyes, he really didn't want her angry at him before they headed out to go away.
"From the moment you told me about Mellie, I didn't like her. I could never understand how she could treat someone as genuine as you the way she did. It is one thing to have an affair, but to cheat over again, is heartless. I cannot imagine the betrayal you felt when you found out about her knowledge of Andrew's attempt on you."
"That still doesn't give me the right to ask you to do something like this, so I would understand if you said no."
"Fitz, she conspired and donated to a militia that wanted to bomb domestic hotspots. She even used Amelia as a prop. So, I am not saying no, I will do this for you, and I will do it professionally and correctly. Just ring Loretta when it's all set up, I have some calls to make. I will see you later, Mister." She pulled his lips to hers, whispering "I love you." Before locking them together.
He was still tasting her as she turned and walked out of the Oval, sending Cyrus in who was waiting outside.
Olivia went to Abby's office to make some calls. Garrison was napping in his play area, but Abby stopped her. "Huck has been trying to reach you. Something is going on with Morris. He needs you to call him right away."
Liv went to her office, took out her cell and noticed six missed calls from Huck and a 911 text. He picked up on the fist half ring. "Liv, you need to come here, by Morris's apartment, something is going on with him and he will only talk to you. I scoped the area, had three guys also from the firm and Callie. I am concerned about him."
Huck had met Morris through Olivia. When Huck lost track of Morris, that's when Olivia assumed he had moved somewhere with his son, but he was living homeless from shelter to shelter. Huck did the occasional check in on Morris since Fitz and Liv was able to relocate him into a senior apartment home. Huck felt guilty enough for not realizing he had been homeless.
Liv opened her office door to her three agents. She wasn't bringing all three. "Santiago, come with me, you two, stay by Abby, do not leave her or Garrison. Loretta if the President is looking for me, tell him I went to see Morris. Huck, Santiago, and myself are on the detail for me. If he needs me for what we discussed I will be back shortly."
Morris was a hot mess when Olivia and Santiago entered the apartment. He was rocking to and fro and Huck was trying to talk to him. He just kept saying one thing repeatedly. "Fletcher, with my own eyes, Fletcher with my own eyes." Liv looked stunned at Huck.
"Do you think?"….
"Yeah, Liv, I do, I think Guthrie was here. I think he spooked Morris with a picture of you."
Liv tilted her head at Huck. "Why would you think that? Hmm? Show me the picture Huck, I know you have it."
Huck handed it to Liv. It was her Rookie police picture with a bullet hole drawn in her forehead. In red lettering it read: Two birds, one bullet, the Metro PD officer and the First Lady.
"Are you sure you scoped the entire building?" Liv was nervous, but cautious, she was on full blown defensive mode now. She kneeled down to Morris. "Morris, look at me, Morris." She touched his shoulder. He stopped rocking and held her hand.
"You shouldn't be here Olivia, he's watching, he's waiting for you. He wants you to be his legacy."
Liv crossed her eyebrows in confusion. "What do you mean, me?"
"He wants to assassinate the first lady, not the president. He wants revenge….on you." Liv looked at Morris's clenched fist.
"Huck, you didn't see this? Morris was gripping a small washcloth that was now bloodstained. Someone had slit his palm inside his hand. Huck immediately ran out of the building, he knew Fletcher was somewhere in the shadows.
Liv called the White House and got Lauren on the line. There was an ambassador to the US hit with bullets outside the US Embassy in Thailand. The President was in a meeting that just started with the Joint Chiefs. Liv told Lauren where she was and the situation. She needed a few more agents sent to Morris's location.
She called Loretta. Loretta was making some calls to the Metro PD and they had already been alerted to the building along with EMS to accompany Morris to the hospital. "Tell Abby she is not to leave her office with Garrison, no one in or out."
Olivia was not ready to play Fletcher's game of hide and seek, but she knew he was serious. He would've killed Morris, but he knew that Morris would ask for her and she would come. Olivia wasn't leaving the apartment until more agents came and a few more PD. She heard sirens approaching, and she used her radio to communicate with Huck. They were clearing the floors, getting the seniors out of the building.
Even though Morris's floor was the first floor Huck cleared out, he had no idea Fletcher would be hiding in the vent in the apartment next to Morris. The apartment belonged to a bedridden senior who couldn't hear well at all. Fletcher was able to gain access to his apartment and once the apartment was searched and cleared, he jumped down and waited. He heard all the activity going on and when the stretcher came in to get Morris, he saw Olivia, closely guarded but following the stretcher.
Olivia reached down to her ankle holster as the they wheeled Morris into the hall and she saw the movement of the doorknob to the adjacent apartment. "SANTIAGO, GUN LEFT." The door flew open and Olivia fired one shot and heard three others go off. She didn't know who her bullet hit, but it hit someone, or something.
It didn't matter though to Olivia as she looked down at her chest, she felt slight dizziness, saw her unfamiliar blood, as her balance became hard to hold, and she slowly drifted, floated in the air, before her body hit the floor. "LIV" was the last word she heard Huck scream before she lost all consciousness.
