Slytherin, the hat proclaimed. Severus just slid it off his head not feeling anything. He knew he should feel something. Instead, he felt numb. Lily was already over at the Gryffindor table laughing with her new housemates.
She didn't even look at him as he slunk to the Slytherin table. Just by looking at them, he could tell he didn't belong here. They were all dressed in the finest robes. His were second hand, mended by his mum and slightly too large for his thin frame. A few of the students looked at him as he sank into the chair, trying to turn his attention to the last few students being sorted. He could hear them talking about him, about his appearance.
"Snape, what kind of surname is that?" one of them finally asked. "You a mudblood or something?"
Severus felt the bile rising in his throat. He knew what the word meant, that's the kind of word one would use to describe Lily if they were feeling cruel.
"No," he snarled. "My mum was a Prince," he snapped. That shut the person up, at least for now. Severus wondered if he could leave, just forget about his education, go study somewhere else. There had to be other wizarding schools, didn't there? It was like his family could afford to send him somewhere else.
He couldn't go home either. He knew if he showed his face around that house any time in the near future, his father would probably beat him to death. He'd nearly done it the night before Severus had left. He'd spent that night sleeping in Lily's shed. She hadn't know he was there, but at least he'd been safe until they'd left for Hogwarts.
He sighed. Maybe he didn't belong anywhere? Maybe he was just a freak? No! He was going to make a name for himself here. He was a Prince after all, that had to count for something! He raised his head, looking around the table. Sitting a few seats up was a seventh year with long blond hair. The older boy looked at Severus, a smile crossing his face. Severus returned it slowly, wondering if this person could be the one who would know his place in all this. The seventh year rose to his feet to a fairly impressive height.
"You said you're a Prince?" he asked, looking at Severus, studying him.
"On my mum's side," Severus answered.
"And your father?"
"A waste of space," Severus answered truthfully. The boy smiled.
"I'm Lucius Malfoy."
"Severus Snape, Prince if I can get it changed," he replied. Lucius smiled.
"You have potential, Severus. Maybe under my tutelage you'll make your proper family proud," he stated, nodding before joining the rest of the upper classmen. Severus stared at Lucius' back for a moment, hoping, maybe he'd finally found somewhere he belonged.
