Weeks had passed since Bella had seen or heard from Jacob. She had gone home from the Cullen house, hoping to find him waiting there. When he wasn't, she drove to his, where a worried Sam was also searching for him. Wherever he had taken off to was too far out of range for the wolves to connect with him mentally. They could feel that he was alive, but no one was quite sure where. Bella spent the rest of the day waiting for word of him, crying in bed.

A note from Jake had appeared taped to Bella's window explaining that while he loved her, he needed time. Things were moving too fast. He needed to process all of the trauma they had endured over the last few months. He missed her terribly, he said, but missing her was not enough. Jacob felt like he was losing himself. His fears and insecurities were changing him. He also told her she needed to decide what she wanted.
Bella already knew what she wanted, and so she began to establish distance between herself and Edward. Jacob needed to see that it was something she could do. There was no one to blame for this situation but herself. Her thoughtless actions had led Jacob to distrust her, and the guilt from that was terrible.
Jacob was still out roaming around somewhere alone. He was blocking out the pack and keeping his distance. At least that was the story they were giving when she called to ask questions. Bella suspected that they knew precisely where Jacob was.
Bella finally gathered the courage to confront Emily and learned her suspicions were correct. Once again, they'd all chosen to lie to her. Emily had tearfully explained to her that it had not been an intentional deception. The pack was trying to protect Jacob's privacy, just as they would have done for her. Jacob was trying to heal, Emily said so that he could get back home to Bella.
"He said that if you knew where he was, you'd try to find him," Emily confessed. He was not wrong. As usual, Emily had gotten through to her. Bella was still angry, no doubt, but she was also happy that Jacob had the kind of support he did. If she were in his place and needed privacy, would she not expect it in return?
In the end, she decided to let it go, reminding herself to be patient.
Jacob had waited for her for years. Surely she could wait for him now.

Bella's nights had been terrible without Jacob. She missed his bodily presence so much that it physically hurt. She wasn't sleeping well, waking up screaming the way she had after Edward had left her. Even though he was supposed to be far away, she could swear she felt Jacob watching her from the woods behind the house. She had not stopped cooking for Billy and delivering food. Rachel was not a homemaker and rarely ate there. Bella continued to clean for Billy with Leah's help. They dutifully avoided the topic of Jacob and his bedroom altogether. If he was coming home to sleep and avoiding her entirely, Bella did not want to know.
Though she had not seen Edward in many days, Bella still found herself battling fits of nausea and dizziness. She began to assume it was because of the imprint. They had been apart for too long. She worried about how he was fairing when he could barely stand to leave her side before he took off. Without needing to be told, Bella was sure he was as miserable as she.
She could feel it.
Despite her heartache, she knew he would come home to her when he was ready. They were destined, after all. She would give him all the time he needed, considering the years she was sure they would have together later on. A few weeks apart seemed like a pretty fair trade for a whole lifetime of Jacob.

When Alice called begging Bella to go on a shopping trip with her, Bella was reluctant to go. Alice assured her that they would be nowhere near Edward, so she could relax. Alice sped to Seattle at an ungodly speed and dragged Bella to every higher-end clothing store she could find for two days. The trip had not been entirely wasted for Bella, though. She was able to acquire more sleepwear and casual clothing that was her style - to an extent. She found packages of plain brown and green T-shirts for the pack since they tended to rip out of their clothing. The darker colors could also help them stay hidden. Alice tried to talk Bella into some rather flashy items that Bella had vehemently turned down. The one thing Alice did succeed at was getting Bella to try on a short black cocktail dress. She bought it for Bella excitedly, prattling on about how every girl needed at least one little black dress in her closet.
Back in Forks, Bella asked Alice to stop at the drug store. After picking up her prescription, they wandered through the conveniently placed feminine product aisle. Bella snatched a box of tampons from the shelf and froze. She had just picked up her new birth control dial.
She should have had a period a long while ago. As she mentally counted backward, she became more alarmed. She was nearly two months late. Her period had never been late in her life. With all of the stress she had been under, she had not even thought about it. She burst into tears, immediately alarming Alice. Her eyes grew wide as Bella snatched a handful of pregnancy tests from the shelf. Alice rushed to embrace Bella, taking the boxes from her hand and putting them back.
"Don't bother with those," Alice said firmly. "Carlisle can take a blood test, okay?" Alice looked at Bella curiously.
"It makes sense," she said.
"What is that, Ali?" Bella asked absently.
"Even though you have not been around Jacob in weeks, you still carry traces of his scent. I thought it was just because his scent lingered around your house and truck, but," She looked Bella in the eye and forced a small smile. "There might be a pup in there."
Bella simultaneously laughed and burst into tears.
"Ali, what the hell am I going to do," she asked. Bella piled her curls onto her head with a rubber band and fanned her flushed face with her hands.
"It's going to be just fine, Bella," Alice tried to soothe her.
Bella began pacing. "Charlie is going to fucking kill me. It's the only thing he's ever warned me about, Alice," Bella said, gesturing wildly. "Getting knocked up. I'm dead. Jacob's dead. Charlie is going to shoot Jacob, Ali. This is it. This is how we'll go out."
"Bella, calm down," Alice said, grabbing Bella to hold her still. "Let's go home and see what's going on before we freak out, okay?"
"You had no visions of this?" Bella asked as they climbed into the car.
"Nope," Alice said and giggled. "That's why I said there might be a puppy in there. I obviously can't see it."
Bella groaned as Alice sped from the parking lot toward home.
As she helped Alice haul her many purchased inside, Bella felt someone watching her from the trees. For the first time in her life, she hoped like hell that it wasn't Jacob.

Jacob had not talked to Bella in weeks. While he pushed himself to stay away, the other half of him was screaming in agony for his mate. Jacob wanted desperately to let his wolf take over and just go feral until he sorted out all the bullshit in his head. Unfortunately, every time he did, the wolf would run straight for Bella. Somehow his wolf always knew exactly where to find her.
Jacob would end up in the woods outside of where she was every time.
He had watched from a distance as the garage construction began. He also still ran patrol with the rest of the pack. He attempted to keep his thoughts to himself, though the eventual slip was inevitable with the pack connection. He kept an eye on his father, ignored his sister as much as possible, and usually ended up asleep on the old sofa in his garage. His raging jealousy had not helped matters any. While Bella was unaware of it, the pack was still guarding her house. This was something they had collectively decided to do while Jacob was working through his issues. He needed to know that he could trust her. He could only learn to do that by knowing what she did when he was not around. Besides that, it calmed the wolf to know his mate was protected. It was the only thing that allowed him to stay away as long as he had. Jacob was grateful that all of his loved ones, including Bella, were trying to allow him a little bit of grace.

Surprisingly, the one person Jacob had been faithfully spending time with had been Emmett. The first time they had crossed paths in the forest, Jacob had snapped at Emmett as he flew past him. Emmett made his way up a tree to escape before Jacob realized who he was. He whined up at Emmett apologetically and laid down. The vampire laughed and jumped to the ground at Jacob's feet. He woofed at him playfully.
"We have missed you, bro. Where have you been?" Emmett had asked him. He reached over and ruffled the hair on Jacob's forehead.
Jacob looked away from him and huffed. He wasn't ready for all of that. He was in no mood to be human, either.
"It's alright, dude. You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to. If you want to talk, I'll listen, though," Emmett said. Although Emmett was fully aware of what was going on between Jacob and Bella, true to his word, he respectfully did not mention it. Jacob was pleasantly surprised that Emmett could read him so easily. It would aid them if they would ever need to fight together again, Jacob thought. He sincerely hoped there would not be any other battles to worry about.
One war was enough for any lifetime.
Jacob woofed at him again and nodded in thanks. Emmett laughed. He crouched down next to Jacob and grinned.
"Wanna race?"
Jacob growled playfully and slapped his paw on the ground. Let's go. He shot forward, leaving a laughing Emmett trailing behind him. More often than not, the two would end up racing through the trees together and acting like absolute imbeciles. Sometimes they hunted together. Emmett's hunting tactics amused him, and Jacob began to understand why Rose compared him to a grizzly.
Jacob was confident that even though Edward was his brother, Emmett truly cared about Jacob and now considered him family. Despite their stances as natural enemies, there was no enemy to be found in Emmett Cullen. He was as honest and loyal as Jacob's pack. Most of all, he was a good friend. Jacob knew, without a doubt, that he would trust Emmett with his own life. He could not even say that of his sisters.
The pack had noticed time spent around Emmett, and surprisingly none were bothered by it the way they were with Seth's befriending Edward.
Probably because Emmett's not a literal lady killer whose head we can't rip off because of a stupid outdated treaty.
Paul and Embry had grown to like Emmett as well. Paul was also fond of Blondie because she was a bossy, beautiful older woman. He loved the same things about Rachel.
Rachel said he had mommy issues.
To Jacob's knowledge, Rachel remained out of the loop and as uninterested in Paul as ever. The whole situation was baffling for Jacob, though he tried not to pay much attention to it. He was supposed to be working on his own issues, after all.

Jacob still wasn't sure about how to deal with his guilt over Mike Newton. Though the pack had all killed vampires, Jacob was the only one to rip the head off of someone he knew. Eventually, he was going to need to confide in someone. The sooner he did, the better. More likely than not, that person would either be Jasper or Roselie. Someone who knew how it felt to take the life of someone you knew. Unwilling to confront the trauma that tore her apart, the person he confided about his guilt could not be the one he wanted it to be the most; Bella. He knew he could talk to Emmett, but not how to ask Emmett if he'd ever had to kill someone he knew.
You can't just walk up to someone and ask if they are a murderer, Jacob thought. Where the hell is Emmett, anyway? There was a crunch as something heavy stepped into the treeline.
"Speak of the devil," Jacob called out as Emmett came into view. Emmett jumped and laughed, surprised to see Jacob in human form.
"Holy shit! He speaks!"
"Yeah, I needed a break from all of the inner monologue," Jacob joked.
"Hmph," Emmett smirked. "So what do you want to do today? You gonna race me on two feet?"
"That just feels weird to even consider," Jacob said. "I phase so fast these days that I forget what it's like to just run human."
"It's always good to keep in touch with your human side," Emmett said and stretched. He quirked an eyebrow at Jacob. "You ready?"

Carlisle was typing at the computer in his office when Bella knocked on the door. He smiled as she walked in, standing to hug her. Alice danced in behind her and closed the door, knowing that it allowed them the facade of privacy, at least.
Bella took a deep breath to calm herself. Telling Carlisle made her feel almost as nervous as the thought of telling Charlie. She could not hold back the sob that escaped as Carlisle stared at her, confused.
"Um, Carlisle?" Alice whispered. She reached around Bella and pointed to her stomach. "Puppy," she whispered. She shot Bella a playful grin. Bella chuckled and wiped her tears away.
"Don't wear it out too quickly, Ali," she teased, sniffling. To Bella's surprise, Carlisle smiled. "Do you know for sure," he asked.
"I… no, but almost two months late is a pretty good indication," she said nervously.
"She thinks Charlie is going to kill her," Alice said.
"Charlie loves you. I promise, he is not going to kill you," Carlisle said and laughed. He pulled Bella to him for another hug, kissing the top of her head. "How about we do a blood test to be sure, hmm?"
"Sounds like a plan," Bella said.
Bella sat on the couch chatting quietly with Esme while she waited on Carlisle. Alice had abandoned them to go play with her new purchases. Jasper had tagged along to amuse her. Bella suspected he was more than happy to oblige her little fashion show as he shot her a wink on his way up the stairs. She had always been fond of seeing the love between the other couples, but the situation at hand only made her long for Jacob.
He should be here for this. We should be finding this out together.
Bella was staring out the window, wondering if Jake was close by when Carlisle called her attention. She snagged Esme's hand and pulled her along to Carlisle's office.
"So I suppose you are not opposed to the rest of the family knowing? Because you know they can hear us," Carlisle said. "I can write it down if you would prefer."
"Please just tell me," she said, squeezing Esme's hand.
"Well, it appears that you are right about seven weeks," Carlisle said.
Seven weeks? She had been pregnant for seven weeks?
And, suddenly Bella knew. The vision she and Jacob shared the morning of the battle had been doubly important. Bella laid her hands on her lower abdomen in awe. The tears she'd expected didn't come.
There was life inside of her. Proof of her and Jacob's love, that they were meant to be together. She was surprised to look up and see Esme sobbing tearlessly next to her.
"I get to be a grandmother," she wailed, pulling Bella against her for a hug. Carlisle wrapped his arms around them both, laughing.
"We'll be here for anything you and Jacob need," Esme said excitedly. "Oh, Bella, I'm so happy for you."
"Are you alright, Bella? You were pretty upset when you got here," Carlisle said.
She looked up at him and grinned.
"I think I am actually. It's scary, but yeah," Bella said, still holding her abdomen. "She's us. Me and Jacob."
"She," Esme asked, chuckling. Bella nodded. Her vision of their children had been very clear.
"Yes, she," Bella said. "She's going to have more family than she knows what to do with." Bella smiled lovingly up at her pseudo-mother.
And I think I know just what we should name her.

Although Edward had been home, he had not greeted her outside Carlisles office as the rest of the family had. He stayed hidden away in his corner of the house from the moment she had arrived.
"Oh, baby sister," Emmett lifted her excitedly as she exited the office and laughed. "Rosie, my baby is having a baby."
"Put her down, idiot," Rosalie said, laughing. She approached Bella for a hug and kissed her cheek. "I'm really happy for you, Bella. I love you." Emmett grinned at Rosalie's rare display of affection.
"I love you, too," Bella told her, squeezing her hand.
Alice and Jasper waited politely in the living room. "Congratulations," Jasper said, smirking.
"Thanks," Bella said and sighed.
"No, he's congratulating me," Alice said giggling. "I finally get to buy baby clothes." Jasper rolled his eyes and laughed, walking away. "It's a shame you couldn't have figured this out two days ago. We went past so many maternity stores." Alice said before gasping loudly. "Do you think we can find a newborn puppy costume?"
Oh, good grief.

Bella swore them all to secrecy. She did not want Jacob and Charlie to find out from anyone but her. Everyone had happily agreed before Alice ran Bella home. Meanwhile, Carlisle sent over an obstetrics referral and scheduled her first sonogram for her.
When they arrived at Charlie's, exhaustion began to set in. "Guess you'll have to wear this soon," Alice said, handing Bella the black dress.
"You can dress me in it for my funeral after Charlie kills me," Bella grumbled. Alice hugged and kissed her goodbye. Bella went upstairs to put things away and wash off the vampire smell. Though she didn't expect him, Bella hoped that sometime soon Jacob would crawl through her window to lay beside her. She wanted to be ready to welcome him when he did.
