Thirty years. That's what Baki had told her over the phone - her father was getting thirty years in prison, without the chance of parole. Hanzo was fired from the police station, and given fifteen years. Renzo had been given ten years. Originally it had been twenty, but because he told the authorities everything, his sentencing had been shortened. It was how his sentence had gotten reduced. His pension and awards were taken away, and his wife was currently looking into divorce. She would plead the judge for full custody. And considering the crime, she would get it.
The news had covered the ordeal, framing it as one of the largest scandals in Konoha's history. Old cases, which had been closed without merit by Renzo, were re-opened. Families rejoiced, stating how they knew something was wrong but had no way of proving it.
The sentencing of the three men didn't stop there. As Hashirama prepared to step down and Madara to take his place, an audit was performed on the police station. The audit had uncovered even more - money laundering, bribes. Many police officers were charged, as well as several administrators.
A security guard who worked at the Hyuuga manor had also been charged with drug possession. He had allowed Danzo to enter the private property that night.
The entire ordeal had been an embarrassment to Tobirama Senju. While he had focused on bringing down Madara Uchiha, several of his supporters used his campaign for funneling drugs in and out of Konoha. The fact that one of them, Hanzo, had stolen his gun and given it to Danzo to kill the Uchihas caused him to be disliked by the majority of the population.
Tobirama had attempted to reach out to Rin, and see how she was doing. But Obito had intervened, which was something that made her glad. She wanted to move on from the entire thing - talking to Tobirama was one of the last things she wanted, even if he was sincere about it.
Almost a week after the burial, the DNA results arrived. It came back as negative, and that did not bother her at all. Her and Asuma spoke about it for nearly an hour, and even though the test came back negative Rin felt as if she had gained an older brother. He told her how the divorce between his parents had been finalized - Hiruzen would keep the house and his mother would move to Suna, where her sister lived. Asuma and Kurenai would plan on visiting her every month to ensure she was OK. Rin felt sorry for Biwako - years of marriage going down the drain.
On a positive note, the pain in her right arm was lessening. In addition, she would resume working at the medical center in a week. She would be doing more administrative work, and assisting other nurses, until her arm was fully healed. It made Rin excited to feel some normalcy returning to her life. The only extra thing she had to let Dr. Chiyo know about was her pregnancy, which was something even she herself had to reflect on.
Obito had resumed going to work on several days, mostly because she told him that she would be OK staying alone. The first few days passed slowly as she stayed alone. She kept herself busy cleaning, reading her medical books, talking to Anko or Asuma, watching TV… For some reason, she avoided thinking about the pregnancy. Avoided thinking about the fact that she was going to become a mother.
And she kept that up until one day, a Friday evening, she had puked so much that Obito had taken her to the hospital. The timing had been perfect too. Obito had arrived from work, and the first thing he heard was her gagging and groaning in the bathroom. He hurried to her and cursed upon seeing her kneeling over the toilet. Even as she flushed the toilet, she continued to vomit.
"I'm taking you to the hospital," he had said, getting up and grabbing several plastic bags.
Once she felt like the vomiting had truly stopped, she brushed her teeth and washed her face before changing into loose clothing.
"It's probably hyperemesis gravidarum," she said as he drove them towards the hospital. She had the plastic bags on her lap, just in case she needed to puke.
Obito glanced at her from the corner of his eyes, "Is that bad?"
She shook her head slowly. "No. It's actually… a good indicator that I'm very pregnant… and that my hormone levels are good. I've treated few women who had it,"
"And the baby?" Obito asked as he parked the Jaguar by the main entrance.
"...The baby should be OK… but we can double check…"
After half an hour of waiting, the nurse attending them felt useless as Rin had diagnosed her own condition. As expected, she was suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. In addition to the diagnosis, the first ultrasound was performed. She laid on the bed with her midsection exposed, and Obito stood next to her.
"Everything looks healthy," the nurse said, and Rin studied the picture carefully.
While everything certainly looked healthy and normal, the image looked...different. Different from what she was used to seeing. But with her pregnancy still early, Rin knew that another ultrasound at a much later date would clear any worries. In addition, she didn't want to scare Obito. As her and the nurse spoke, her boyfriend had been glued to the screen showing the black and white image of the growing fetus.
With a prescription in hand, the couple headed home. After a long and warm shower, Rin laid in bed. The medicine was helping with the nausea. After his shower, Obito laid next to her and rubbed her stomach.
"Were you able to tell if it's a boy or girl?"
She shook her head, "Not yet. Too early right now… but maybe in two or three weeks we could know,"
"If it's a girl...I want her to have your eyes, your smile… your beauty,"
Rin giggled, "Girls usually end up looking more like their fathers. So she'll have your hair...your eyes...your features…"
"I will spoil her,"
"I believe that,"
"I will take her to work with me, teach her everything,"
"She may be too young at first,"
"I'll teach her how to do some basic coding then,"
Rin giggled, "And what if it's a boy?"
"...He'll have to learn everything himself then...just like how Madara raised me,"
Rin rolled her eyes before closing them and going to sleep. Obito remained awake for another hour, rubbing her stomach and thinking about their future.
A week later…
"It's probably twins!" Dr. Chiyo told her within the first thirty minutes of her mentioning the pregnancy.
"You think so?" Rin asked.
"Yes. Those suckers like to hide sometimes when we do ultrasounds. Watch in a few weeks, you'll find out that it's twins. And identical!"
Rin nodded slowly, thinking about that possibility. Having one child was scary enough. But two, and at the same time? She wasn't sure how she would be able to handle that.
Putting that thought behind, Rin continued her day treating patients and training new interns. With her arm doing better, she was able to move it more freely. And while she didn't deliver any new babies, she acted as a support for the single mothers who were about to give birth and had no one to support.
"Just a little more!" she would tell these women as they groaned, screamed, and cried as the little life slowly and painfully exited out of their bodies.
"Did I hurt your hand?" one of the mothers had asked afterwards, and Rin shook her head.
"Not at all,"
During her breaks, the other nurses would stop by and ask her many questions about her arm. And even though the case was closed and Rin was slowly moving in, she preferred not to talk about the details. She always worried about the public finding out that the monster who tried to kill the Uchiha family that night was her own father, and that she was dating an Uchiha. It would open the gate for rumors and even more questions.
So she answered with a simple "my friend and I were in a car accident" without going into much detail.
After her breaks, she busied herself with either admin work or checking up on some of the newborns. As she watched them, she rubbed her stomach and smiled. As scared as she was, she was also excited for this new journey. And so was Obito. Each night he would rub and kiss her stomach, and in the mornings he would help her get ready. Before she resumed her work, she wore blouses with plain wireless bras in order to make it easier to get dressed. But getting into her nurse scrubs was difficult, yet Obito would be there to help with getting the shirt over her head and arms through each hole. He would even go as far to tie her shoe laces.
After work, she would wait five to ten minutes for him. Obito was a careful person, and with them expecting their first child, he didn't want her going home alone. Even taking a cab was a no for him. He started planning his work schedule carefully in order to be by the medical center around the same time she would be done.
Rin looked forward to getting home, but today's evening would be different. Mikoto was hosting dinner and wanted the entire family there. Little Izumo was finally home.
Rin did not want to go; her mind suddenly replayed the incident, and all she wanted to do was hide. But Obito was happy, and she forced a smile as they reached home to get dressed for the dinner.
He showered and changed into blue jeans and a black button down long-sleeve shirt. She, in the meantime, stared at her closet with a blank look. It had been a while since she had gotten shopping. Her jeans still fit, but not like before. Luckily, she had a nice pair of black tights. Now, she just needed a nice blouse. She immediately ruled out half of her blouses - they were too tight and would highlight her growing pregnancy. And considering tonight will be about Izumi and her baby, she didn't want to take away that spotlight from her.
Rin selected a dark red blouse and a white cardigan. She would use the cardigan to cover her stomach.
"Ready?" Obito asked, appearing in the bedroom.
"Almost," she said as she grabbed a bra.
She turned away from him as she dropped the towel to the floor. He walked towards her until his chest touched her back. She put her arms through the holes of her bra, and allowed him to hook the garment for her. She then fixed her breasts within the cups, feeling them tender.
He then helped her put on the blouse and got on one knee to kiss her stomach. She combed his hair with her fingers.
"Your seven weeks now?" he asked.
"Yeah. I'll have to buy new clothes soon,"
"I'll buy them for you," he said, placing another kiss by the side of her bump, "I'll buy everything you need,"
They were by Mikoto's home within an hour, and Rin took a deep breath as she recognized several cars parked by the drive through. Obito noticed her discomfort, and grabbed her hand.
"Everything will be OK,"
She nodded and gave him a warm smile before exiting the vehicle. He held her hand, and the couple entered the home.
They were all sitting in the living room, Madara holding the infant wrapped in a light blue blanket.
"Obito, Rin!" Izumi greeted, rushing towards them and giving each a hug.
Rin looked at the family members. The ones she recognized gave her a warm smile. But there were a few who she didn't recognize, and they looked at her. The look wasn't mean, but critical for sure. Their expressions changed the moment Obito greeted them, and Rin knew that the next several hours would be very awkward.
She gave brief greetings to Madara, Shisui, and a few others before sitting quietly on the sofa. Mikoto asked her about her arm, and Rin would respond courteously.
"It's good that your arm is healing," Mikoto said, and Rin felt as if the woman wanted to say something else. She then remembered how Obito told her that Mikoto knew about her pregnancy.
Obito, who was sitting next to her, was holding Izumo.
"He looks just like his momma," he said with a smirk, and Izumi grinned proudly.
As the family talked, Rin glanced at the young boy. His eyes were closed, a white pacifier in its mouth. She thought about her own child growing inside of her, and felt as if she didn't deserve any happiness. The little infant continued to suck on its pacifier as Obito held him, and Rin looked away. The sound of the gun going off went through her mind, and she counted from fifty in order to remain calm.
Some time later, Itachi grabbed his son.
"He has the same nose as Sasuke," Itachi said with a smile.
"I noticed that too," Shisui added.
"He will be a fine young man," Mayra Uchiha, distant cousin of Fugaku, added. "I'm so glad everything went OK and that crazy man is locked up,"
"Couldn't agree more. How dare he try to harm a pregnant woman like that," said an unfamiliar Uchiha man.
Rin looked down as an awkward silence erupted. Her heart beat fast, and she wanted nothing more than to disappear. She didn't belong to this family.
Madara cleared his throat before Obito could open his mouth, "Why don't we start dining? Mikoto, is dinner ready?"
The older woman nodded, "Yes! Let's all go to the dining room,"
The entire family headed to that direction, and Rin made sure to stay behind. Obito stayed by her said, grabbing her hand and rubbing her knuckles reassuringly.
The conversation shifted to Madara's inauguration, which was scheduled in two weeks. The family was excited, and couldn't wait to see the head of their large family be seated as governor of Konoha.
Rin said nothing throughout dinner, eating small bites of her food. Mayra Uchiha would occasionally glance at her, and Rin would try to pretend that she wasn't noticing the intense stare. But Mayra wasn't dumb, and would pout her lips sideways. Rin felt like running away, but she counted from one-hundred this time. She couldn't let this woman spook her.
"I'm going to feed him," Izumi said with Izumo in her arms.
"I'll come with you," Mayra said with a smile.
With the woman gone, Rin was able to finish her food quietly. But not long before she had the sudden urge to use the bathroom and pee. As her pregnancy went along, the need to use the bathroom increased.
"I need to use the restroom," she whispered to Obito, who nodded in response.
She got up quietly and walked towards the hallway which led to the guest restroom. She did her business and glanced at the clock - it was just eight-thirty in the evening. Flushing the toilet and washing her hands, she then exited the bathroom.
Rin heard some chatter not too far from where she stood, and walked around to find Izumi sitting on a bench by Mikoto's garden. She was breastfeeding her son, and Mayra sat next to her.
"I'm surprised Obito is still with her," Mayra said, and Rin's heart began to drop.
"She's a really nice girl," Izumi said softly, "She gave me so much advice while I was pregnant. I don't think I could've done it without her,"
"Yeah, but her father almost killed you...and your son! How can you even allow her to be in the same room as you? If I were you, I would keep Izumo away from her… put as much distance as possible!"
"Rin is not like her dad. Her dad is an asshole and deserves the death penalty… But Rin is really sweet. Yes, even I felt some type of way against her when I first woke up at the hospital,"
Rin's eyes widened at the information. Her brain told her to leave, but her legs refused to move.
"...But it's not her fault. And she's improved Obito so much! And you know that,"
Mayra scuffed, "That Obito was a loose one, especially with that girl...what was her name? Konan?"
"Rin is nothing like Konan. Konan was self-centered… She never cared for him. Rin does,"
Mayra rolled her eyes, "I prefer Konan over this girl whose crazy father tried to kill someone in our family. Besides, she could be in it for the money. You know how much we're all worth. Next thing you know, she gets pregnant and is set for life with Obito's money,"
Izumi was about to respond to that when she finally felt a presence there, and turned around to find Rin walking away.
"...Shit…"
Mayra shrugged her shoulders, "Hm… someone had to say it, right? I'm just doing it to protect our family."
Izumi stood up angrily, re-adjusting her clothing as she finished feeding her son, "You know, you should really get to know her before making up false assumptions. She's been through a lot herself,"
"Izumi, you know I don't trust strangers just like that. Especially those who come from poor backgrounds. That girl could've just wanted a ticket out of her misery, and Obito is too naive to see it,"
"I don't want to listen to any more of this," the young mother said before walking away, shushing her now crying son.
Mayra shrugged her shoulders uncaringly before lighting a cigarette.
Inside the house, Izumi walked into the dining area and quickly noticed the empty seat next to Obito.
"He's crying," Itachi said.
"Yeah. Can you hold him for a sec?"
After handing over the baby to him, she walked around the home looking for her brunette friend. She checked the other side of the garden, living room, guest room, but nothing. Lastly, she tried the front porch and yard. Again, nothing.
She hurried back inside and approached Obito, who was laughing at something Shisui was saying.
"Hey," she said, sitting next to him.
"Hey, what's up?"
"Have you seen Rin?"
"She went to the restroom," Obito then checked his watch, "She's been there for a while,"
"I just checked there, it's empty…. Actually, I need to tell you something…"
By the time she was away from the house, Rin was sobbing. The security guard by the front gate had only stared at her as she stormed right past him.
Her father's words rang into her mind about how she would be casted aside by the Uchihas. Even if Obito would still love her, the rest of his family would always remember her for the crime her father committed. She wouldn't be known for anything else. And the fact that she came from a poor financial background only made it seem that she was with Obito for the money.
The area was dark, and after a while she stopped. She wasn't sure for how long she had been walking. But one thing was for sure, she could no longer see Mikoto's home.
She wondered how long it would take for Obito to realize that she was gone, and part of her felt guilty for storming away without at least telling him the situation. But then again, she didn't want to start any type of drama. Tonight was about Izumi and her son.
Knowing Obito, she knew that he would be upset with how she had suddenly walked away. But had she stayed and continued to hear those woman's words and see her reaction, she would've been in a more awkward situation.
Wiping her tears away, she continued to walk while whipping her phone out. She texted Anko to see if she was home and free. And once she got the confirmation, she ordered a cab and left.
All eyes were on Obito the moment he stormed out of the house and towards the backyard.
"Where is he…" Madara started asking.
Izumi bit her lip, "Mayra...said some things about Rin...and…"
The future governor sighed, "Shit…"
Getting up, he walked outside as well. Mikoto and Fugaku followed, overhearing what Izumi had just told Madara.
Mayra put away her cigarette the moment she noticed Obito walking over to her.
"What the fuck gives you the right to talk about Rin like that?"
"How about you respect your elders first?" the woman replied sternly, "And I said what had to be said! I'm making sure our family is protected! And that includes you too, Obito!"
Obito blinked at the woman before laughing cruelly, "You're fucking kidding me… You're protecting all of us from Rin? Tell me, what has she done to all of us?"
"Her father-"
"The man is in jail! Now tell me how Rin has hurt any of us. Tell me!"
Mayra raised her head, "You still have a lot to learn about women, Obito. Girls will throw themselves at you just for your money. Remember this - you're an Uchiha! That girl was raised in the ghetto!"
"I don't fucking care!" Obito yelled, "And neither should you! Rin has never asked me for a single dime. I'm the one who chooses to support her!"
"Then you're a fool for letting that girl brainwash you-"
"That's enough!" Madara said, stepping in between them. He then faced Mayra, "Rin and Obito have been together for months. And while what her father's actions are unforgivable, Rin has also suffered. That man killed his own wife, her mother, with his bare hands and hid it for nearly six years. And that cast around her arm? That was due to someone trying to silence her...someone who worked for one of our local police stations,"
Mayra remained quiet, yet her expression didn't change.
"I don't even know why I'm wasting my breath with this hag," Obito said, "I need to look for Rin. Izumi, do you know where she went?"
"No," she replied, "I just saw her turn around and walk away,"
"She's not in the house. Fugaku, can you page security? Maybe they saw her leave," Mikoto said.
Her husband did. In the meantime, Obito dialed Rin's phone and cursed when there was no answer. He left her two texts.
"They saw her leave," Fugaku said, "About fifteen minutes ago. They said she was walking in a hurry, and she seemed upset. They asked her if she was OK but she kept walking,"
"If she's on foot, she couldn't have gone far," Mikoto added.
"I'm leaving," Obito said, taking his car keys out. He then faced Mayra one more time, "This is the first and last warning I'll be giving you - keep Rin's name out of your fucking mouth,"
The woman rolled her eyes before turning away.
"I'll be going with him," Madara said.
"Please let us know once you find her," Mikoto said, and the older man nodded. She then faced Mayra, "Put that cigarette away. No smoking in my garden,"
"Rich people can be so snotty," Anko said, taking a sip of her beer.
Rin sat cross legged with tea in her hands. "The way she talked about me...it's like...she doesn't even know me! She makes these assumptions that I'm with Obito for his money, a-and-"
"Fuck that bitch," Anko said, "We know that's not true. Obito knows that's not true! That guy fucking loves you so much,"
"...I know… But I feel so ashamed of even meeting his family…"
"How has everyone else been treating you?"
"As normal as they can, I guess? Mikoto is really nice, and Madara spoke with me a few times earlier today…"
"So it's just this one bitch who's mad?"
Rin nodded, "Yeah. I've never met her before. But the moment I walked in, she was already giving me these weird looks-"
Rin paused as her phone vibrated again, Obito's name on the screen.
"You should let him know where you are, and that you're OK. You're pregnant with his kid now… He's probably really worried about you,"
"I know. I feel bad walking out like that….but I just didn't know what to do,"
"I don't blame you for leaving either. Even if that woman does feel a certain way about you, the least she could've done was kept her mouth shut,"
Rin shrugged, "Yeah… I guess. I'm kind of nervous talking to Obito. I know he's going to be very upset,"
"Want me to text him?"
"Yeah,"
Nearly fifteen minutes after sending the text, Anko heard three steady knocks on her door. Rin took a deep breath as her friend got up to open the door. She immediately heard Obito's voice and felt butterflies in her stomach.
"Is she OK?"
"Yeah, she's fine...just really upset," Anko replied, blushing as she saw Obito's uncle standing right next to him. The man may be older, but he was very good looking.
"I know you want to talk to her," Madara told Obito, "but I think it's better if I speak to her first,"
"...OK," Obito said, and Madara turned to Anko.
"Would it be OK if Rin and I had some privacy? I'm sorry for the rude ask,"
Anko giggled, "Hey, no worries at all! Pfft, take the whole place if you want! Um...I'll just stand outside with Obito?"
Madara chuckled before walking inside her very small apartment, "Thank you,"
With her beer in hand, Anko stood outside the hall with Obito as the future governor walked towards the living room. She leaned against the wall and took another sip of her beer. She opened an eye as she felt Obito's narrowed eyes on her.
"What?!"
"...Please tell me you didn't give her beer,"
"You have no faith in me, do you?"
Obito crossed his arms across in front of his chest. "I worry about her… and with her being pregnant…"
"I can understand,"
"How did she get here?"
"A cab. She was really upset. No offense, but that family member...is a bitch,"
Obito chuckled, "She is. And I approached her about it before coming here,"
"Rin overheard her saying the part about Konan, your ex. I think out of everything she heard, the piece about your ex is what's really bothering Rin the most. I don't know if you've noticed, but Rin can get jealous pretty easily,"
"I've noticed. But she knows that I love her-"
"No offense, but that's what all men say nowadays. I know you've done a lot for Rin, and that is great... But she's pregnant with no family members. If you two were to break up or something, she wouldn't have anywhere to go. You have a large family, a good support system if anything goes wrong. She has no siblings, no aunts, no uncles, or cousins… her father's in jail and her mother's dead… I think she feels lonely at times, and scared. And overhearing what that bitch said made her lose more of her self esteem,"
Rin expected Obito to be walking in, but her eyes widened as she saw Madara give her a warm smile and sit next to her. She blinked awkwardly. Aside from an apology, she wasn't sure what to say.
"You had us worried," Madara said lightly. He didn't seem angry.
"I-I'm sorry… I just… Needed some air and…I'm sorry for leaving like that-" She bit her bottom lip, unsure of how much to tell him.
"You don't need to apologize for that. What Mayra said about you was inappropriate," he said, and she looked at him in surprise. He knew?
"Wait...you know what she said…?"
"Izumi told us… And I'm sorry you had to hear that. No one faults you for leaving. You were disrespected and had every right to leave if you felt uncomfortable,"
"...I'm not entirely mad at her," Rin admitted, "She's trying to protect your family, which I understand. My father did something terrible to your family...and I'm sorry for that. I know she doesn't know me at all...but I wish she understood that...I'm not with Obito for his money… I promise… I'm not trying to deceive him or anyone in your family,"
"And we know that," Madara said, "Mayra has always been a hot-headed woman. And you're right, she's protecting the family. But you're also family,"
Rin's eyebrows furrowed before she broke down in front of him, "I-I'm sorry… I don't mean to cry…"
She wanted to say it was the hormones from the pregnancy, but figured that now wasn't the right time for that.
"There's nothing for you to apologize for. Yes, your father may have hurt an Uchiha… but he's hurt you the most. Out of all of us, you've been suffering the most. And I want to let you know that we're all here to take care of you, especially as you go through your pregnancy,"
"...You know?"
"Yes. Obito told me while driving here. He was scared of what could've happened to you,"
Rin looked down, "He's probably mad at me,"
"Worried, but not mad," Madara said while taking his phone out, "Rin, I want to show you something. It's a picture of Obito from when he came back from deployment,"
He turned the phone towards her and she gasped. She couldn't even recognize him with the bandages covering his entire body. There was a tube inserted into his mouth, and his eyes were closed.
"I thought I almost lost him," Madara said, "It had me thinking of where I failed. I promised my brother that I would take care of him… So when I was told that they had found him buried under some rocks, I broke down. I thought that Obito would finally come home and be his old self… But I failed to pay attention to the anxiety he got as a result from his accident. He barely spoke...stopped caring about everything… He was even ready to step down from the space company he owns. I remember he had the resignation letter written and signed. It was like...he was ready to give up,"
Rin was shocked to hear all of this. She had been aware of his accident, but that he was ready to give it all up?
"What made him change his mind then?" she asked. If she recalled accurately, he was managing his company when they first met.
Madara turned to her with a smile, "Not what...but who…. And that who was you. When he first met you, he thought about a better version of himself… one where you would be involved. He was hesitant at talking to you at first, but Izumi told him to try… and that's when he went back into the cafe to approach you. I think my nephew fell in-love with you that first night, Rin,"
She remembered that night clearly. She had been attacked by two teenagers, and Obito had arrived at the right time to save her. Every detail made her blush and smile, and she stood up quickly.
"I...want to see him,"
Madara chuckled, "Well he's outside with your friend… I had him wait,"
She giggled at that. She could imagine how impatient he was probably getting.
Rin opened the door and quickly met his gaze. He was leaning against the wall, and stood up straight. She rushed to him, pressing her body against his as he wrapped his arms around her.
"Rin,"
"I'm sorry for leaving like that," she said against his chest, and Obito rubbed the back of her head.
"It's OK," he cupped her cheeks and raised her head, "I'm just happy you're safe,"
She tiptoed to bring her face closer to his, and Obito met her half way by leaning down. Their lips met in a brief but deep kiss.
"Let's go home?" he asked, and she nodded with a bright smile.
