Title: The Spider's Trap

It was a new day in San Francisco, and Spencer, forced to compete in Discord's tournament, was wandering around the streets looking for a duel. He needed to win ten star coins to gain entry to the location of the finals.

"Mother… Father… I won't let the both of you down," thought Spencer, "I'll rescue you with my own two hands."

But first, he needed to find someone to face off against in order to gain the star coins he needed. While walking around the corner, Spencer got a pretty big greeting…

"Welcome to California," greeted a female voice, "the Golden State!"

Spencer turned and saw a teenage girl his age standing nearby. She had blue and red-colored hair, and a confident, yet careful, look on your face.

"Gee, thanks for telling me what I already know," said Spencer sarcastically, "Are you a duelist?"

"Yes, indeed," The teenage girl nodded, "I'm Natalie. My dad works as a Tour Guide and I sometimes help him welcome new people."

"I'm Spencer," frowned Spencer, giving his name but nothing else, "Listen, I'm not here for lectures or anything; I'm here to duel and win!"

"Really? In that case, let's see how good of a duelist you are," offered Natalie, activating her Duel Disk.

From there, Spencer took his position, and activated his own Duel Disk.

"DUEL!" Spencer and Natalie exclaimed at the same time (LP: 4000) x2.

Turn One: Natalie (LP: 4000)
Deck: 35
Current Hand (5): "Ushi Oni", "Monster Reborn", "Jirai Gumo", "Spiderweb Castle", and "Giant Ushi Oni"

Almost immediately, Natalie took one of the cards from her hand and placed it onto her Duel Disk.

"The first turn is mine!" declared Natalie, "I Summon 'Jirai Gumo' in Attack Mode!"

Appearing onto the field was a large spider of sorts (Level: 4/ATK: 2200/DEF: 100). Following that, a face-down card materialized on the field behind 'Jirai Gumo'.

"Finally, I'll Set a card face-down and end my turn!" finished Natalie, "Now, Sudrian, it's your turn!"

"Hmph!" huffed Spencer, drawing a card, "It's my turn! Draw!"

Turn Two: Spencer Gresley (LP: 4000)
Deck: 34
Current Hand (6): "Combination Attack", "Z-Metal Tank", "Formation Union", "X-Head Cannon", "Roll Out!", and "Frontline Base"

His drawn card was the 'X-Head Cannon' Monster Card.

"I Summon 'X-Head Cannon' in Attack Position!" continued Spencer.

The blue robotic monster with twin cannons appeared on the field (Level: 4/ATK: 1800/DEF: 1500).

"Now, I'm perfectly aware that 'X-Head Cannon' isn't going to be enough to fight your overgrown spider," acknowledged Spencer, "But, I'm hardly done preparing for the battle."

Natalie readied herself for what was to come.

"I activate a Continuous Spell from my hand - 'Frontline Base'!" declared Spencer, slotting a card into his Duel Disk. This caused the mentioned Spell Card to flip face-up and reveal itself, "Once per turn: I can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Union monster from my hand."

"A Union monster?!" recoiled Natalie.

"That's right! And I'll use the special ability of 'Frontline Base' now!" As he spoke, Spencer took and placed another card onto his Duel Disk, "Come forth - 'Z-Metal Tank'!"

The yellow tank-like monster appeared onto the field (Level: 4/ATK: 1500/DEF: 1300).

"I activate 'Z-Metal Tank's' union effect! Once per turn, I can either: I must target 1 'X-Head Cannon' or 'Y-Dragon Head' I control; I must equip this card to that target, OR: I must unequip this card and Special Summon it. A monster equipped with this card gains 600 ATK/DEF, also if the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle or card effect, I must destroy this card instead."

Almost immediately, 'X-Head Cannon' and 'Z-Metal Tank' combined together, as per the latter's effect. Now combined, 'X-Head Cannon' grew stronger (ATK: 1800 - 2400/DEF: 1500 - 2100).

"BATTLE!" yelled Spencer, entering the Battle Phase, "'X-Head Cannon', slaughter that 'Jirai Gumo'!"

'X-Head Cannon' obeyed, aiming its twin cannons and firing a blast, striking 'Jirai Gumo' and destroying the spider. Natalie grimaced as she lost some minor LP from the attack (LP: 4000 - 3800).

"But, my attack has not ended there!" grinned Spencer.

"Not ended there? What are you talking about?" stammered Natalie.

"From my hand, I'll activate the Quick-Play Spell 'Combination Attack'!" announced Spencer, taking and holding a card ('Combination Attack') out, "During a Battle Phase, I can use this effect on 1 monster that has attacked this turn and is equipped with a Union monster: I must change the Union monster back to a monster in face-up Attack or Defense Position. Also, the monster that was equipped with the Union monster may attack again this turn," He then gave a command to his 'single' monster, "'X-Head Cannon' and 'Z-Metal Tank', detach and become two separate monsters again!"

'X-Head Cannon' (ATK: 2400 - 1800) and 'Z-Metal Tank' (ATK: 1500) both did as they were told.

"And from 'Combination Attack's' effect, I can use these two monsters to attack," reminded Spencer, before giving a command to one of his two monsters, "'X-Head Cannon', attack the opposing player directly!"

'X-Head Cannon' obeyed, aiming both its cannons and opening fire upon Natalie, striking and causing her to be pushed back a bit (LP: 3800 - 2000).

"And there's one more!" Spencer went on, "'Z-Metal Tank', direct attack!"

'Z-Metal Tank' obeyed, firing a blast of its own, hitting and pushing Natalie back even further (LP: 2000 - 500).

"This guy is strong," thought Natalie.

"Finally, I'll Set two cards face-down and end my turn," finished Spencer, slotting two cards into his Duel Disk.

Two face-down cards materialized on the field in-front of him.

"I have to say you're good," admitted Natalie, "However, it will take more than knocking 3500 LP off me to make me lose!" She then drew a card, "It's my turn! Draw!"

Turn Three: Natalie (LP: 500)
Deck: 34
Current Hand (4): "Ushi Oni", "Monster Reborn", "Giant Ushi Oni", and "Widespread Ruin"

Her drawn card was a Trap Card called 'Widespread Ruin'. Adding the card into her hand, she took and held another card ('Monster Reborn') up.

"Spell Card - 'Monster Reborn'!" announced Natalie, "Return to me - 'Jirai Gumo'!"

In an instant, the giant spider returned to the field.

"However, I'm going to offer 'Jirai Gumo' as a Tribute!"

'Jirai Gumo' faded away in a blue streak, and in its place on the field was a face-up Monster Card called 'Ushi Oni'.

"I Tribute Summon 'Ushi Oni' in Attack Mode!" continued Natalie.

Appearing from the face-up Monster Card and onto the field was a jar of sorts. Suddenly, emerging from the jar was a djinn-like creature with the head of a bull (Level: 6/ATK: 2150/DEF: 1950).

"Now I'll offer my new monster as a Tribute!" As Natalie spoke, she removed the 'Ushi Oni' Monster Card from her Duel Disk and sent it to the GY. This resulted in 'Ushi Oni' fading away in a blue streak as well, "Now, I'll Special Summon 'Giant Ushi Oni' in its place!"

Appearing onto the field was a huge, spider-like creature with the top half of a blue-skinned bull (Level: 8/ATK: 2600/DEF: 2100).

"If 'Giant Ushi Oni' destroys an opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row," explained Natalie, before entering the Battle Phase, "Because of that, I will attack your 'Z-Metal Tank'!"

'Giant Ushi Oni' dove into the air and began to fall towards 'Z-Metal Tank'.

"A useless move on your part!" insulted Spencer, as one of his Set cards flipped face-up and revealed itself, "I activate a Trap - 'Formation Union'! To make a long story short, this card has two effects, but I'm only going to go over one of them… I must equip 1 Union monster on my field to an appropriate monster on my field as an Equip Spell. With that, I'll equip 'Z-Metal Tank' to my 'X-Head Cannon'!"

From there, 'Z-Metal Tank' and 'X-Head Cannon' merged together similar to the construction of 'XYZ - Dragon Cannon' (ATK: 1800 - 2400/DEF: 1500 - 2100).

"I expected you to activate a Trap Card!" cut in Natalie, before pointing to her face-down card, "Face-down card, open! Continuous Trap - 'Spiderweb Castle', activate!"

The Set card flipped face-up and revealed itself, causing a large spider web to form around the field.

"I must activate only when my opponent activates a Trap Card," said Natalie, "When an opponent's monster declares an attack; I must halve its ATK."

"But, you're the one who's attacking," reminded Spencer, "That means your Trap Card's effect won't activate at the moment!"

"Too true. Now, 'Giant Ushi Oni', continue your attack!"

'Giant Ushio Oni' obeyed, diving towards Spencer's monsters.

"No, you don't!" shouted Spencer, "Remember 'Z-Metal Tank's' effect? Instead of destroying 'X-Head Cannon', you'll destroy 'Z-Metal Tank' instead!"

'Giant Ushio Oni's' legs impaled 'Z-Metal Tank', causing an explosion to cloud Spencer's side of the field. When the smoke cleared away, 'X-Head Cannon' (1800) was still standing, and Spencer then took damage (LP: 4000 - 3800).

"He kept his 'X-Head Cannon' safe," thought Natalie, before taking a card from her hand and slotting it into a Spell/Trap slot on her Duel Disk, "I will Set one card face-down and end my turn."

A face-down card materialized on the field.

"Since it's your End Phase, I'll activate another Trap!" announced Spencer, as his remaining Set card flipped face-up and revealed itself to be… "'Roll Out!'! I must target 1 Union monster in my GY; I must equip that target to a monster I control that would be an appropriate target for that Union monster's effect."

"Oh no!" realized Natalie, "You're going to bring 'Z-Metal Tank' back!"

"Correct," confirmed Spencer. "Return - 'Z-Metal Tank'!"

And 'Z-Metal Tank' returned to the field, combining with 'X-Head Cannon' once more (ATK: 1800 - 2400/DEF: 1500 - 2100).

"And now, it's time for me to end this duel!" declared Spencer, drawing a card, "Draw!"

Turn Four: Spencer Gresley (LP: 3800)
Deck: 33
Current Hand (1): "Card of Demise"

On cue, the 'Card of Demise' Spell Card materialized face-up on the field.

"I activate the Spell Card 'Card of Demise'!" Spencer went on, drawing five cards, "I must draw cards until I have 5 cards in my hand. During my 5th Standby Phase after activation: I must send all cards in my hand to the GY."

His new hand contained 'Cloning', 'Y-Dragon Head', 'Vampire Lord', 'Birthright', and 'Maiden with Eyes of Blue'.

"Perfect!" thought Spencer, smiling wickedly. He then looked up, "Once more, I'll activate the effect of my Continuous Spell - 'Frontline Base'!"

The 'Y-Dragon Head' Monster Card materialized face-up on the field.

"I Special Summon 'Y-Dragon Head'!"

Appearing onto the field was the red, robotic dragon (Level: 4/ATK: 1500/DEF: 1600).

"Finally, I'll have 'X-Head Cannon' and 'Z-Metal Tank' become single monsters again!" announced Spencer.

'X-Head Cannon' and 'Z-Metal Tank' detached from each other once again. This left Spencer with three monsters ('X-Head Cannon', 'Y-Dragon Head', and 'Z-Metal Tank') to use, and boy did he have a use for them…

"With my three 'X-Y-Z' monsters out, I'll banish them!" thundered Spencer, removing the three cards from his Duel Disk, "With that, I'll Fusion Summon 'XYZ-Dragon Cannon'!"

From there, the three robotic monsters successfully combined into their ultimate form (Level: 8/ATK: 2800/DEF: 2600).

"'XYZ-Dragon Cannon'…!" flinched Natalie.

"I can discard 1 card, then target 1 card my opponent controls; I must destroy that target," explained Spencer, before holding up three cards ('Cloning', 'Vampire Lord', and 'Birthright') and discarding them, "Seeing as this is not a 'One per turn' effect, I'll send three cards to the GY and destroy three cards you control! HYPER DESTRUCTION!"

From there, 'XYZ-Dragon Cannon' fired several blasts towards Natalie's side of the field, vaporizing 'Giant Ushi Oni' along with her face-up 'Spiderweb Castle' Trap Card and her face-down 'Widespread Ruin' Trap Card.

"BATTLE!" declared Spencer, entering the Battle Phase, "'XYZ-Dragon Cannon', finish off Natalie! XYZ HYPER CANNON!"

'XYZ-Dragon Cannon' obeyed, firing another blast of energy which struck Natalie head on (LP: 500 - 0).

DUEL RESULTS: Spencer Gresley wins!

When the holograms faded, Natalie returned to her feet.

"You're the winner," she admitted, walking over to Spencer and holding out two star coins, "Here are my only star coins."

"This gives me four coins in total, leaving me six to go," Spencer stated, taking the star coins.

He then turned to leave.

"Wait!" called Natalie, "Can I at least show you around the city a little bit?"

"I already know my way around," retorted Spencer, before finally leaving the area, "Besides, I duel alone; you would slow me down."

Natalie was left alone and dismayed by the silver-haired boy's cold, haughty attitude.

"Huh, that's some guy," Natalie remarked, but quickly shrugged it off, "Oh well… I'm out of the tournament, so I might as well go and see if I can help anybody else."

With that, she turned and left the area to see if there was anyone who wanted some assistance on exploring San Francisco.
