Chapter 34: Rin
Vollu laughed as he kicked the slumped body of Blake's master off of his blade. The body crumpled to the floor, but Rin could tell that she was still breathing.
She had to get up. After Integra had transferred her energy to Blake, he had fallen to his knees and had begun to shake. Rin's heart tore as she looked at his defeated form. He believed that he had just lost his master. She couldn't blame him, but now he was the only hope that they had to defeat Vollu.
She tried to move, but could only struggle slightly. The paralysis spell had been potent.
——
Vollu began to walk towards Blake with sword in hand.
"How sad," Vollu taunted. "I expected more from the old hag."
Blake gripped the dirt and grit his teeth.
Integra was dead, and he couldn't do anything about it. All he could do was watch as she was run through right in front of him. He was weak. Why was he so goddamn weak?! What had been the point this whole time?
"Blake!" Rin called out, but he could no longer comprehend what was going on.
He had failed.
Vollu stopped in front of the kneeling diviner.
"She was pathetic!" He laughed. "To use the divine overdrive in such a fashion. "She was truly too stuck in the old ways. Now I'll finally get to kill you."
Blake felt it. A black flame in his heart ignited with intense savagery. This man was insulting the woman who had trained and cared for Blake. The woman that had held him after his mother's death. The woman who refused to give up on him. His precious master. This man was insulting her completely.
"Don't..." Blake said under his breath.
The flame started to burn more violently within him, incinerating every ounce of self-righteousness he had ever possessed. He didn't care what he needed to do anymore. He only cared about one thing.
Kill.
He needed to kill.
"What was that, little pup?" Vollu taunted more. "Whining for mercy?"
Blake's form tensed a bit. "Don't talk about her like that," He said louder, but it was still only a whisper.
Kill.
Destroy.
Annihilate.
The anger was consuming him now. He couldn't contain it much longer. He needed to release it. He wanted to release it. He wanted to kill Vollu.
"What was that, pup?" Vollu laughed. "I couldn't hear you?"
He would kill Vollu.
"DON'T TALK ABOUT MY MASTER LIKE THAT!!!" Blake roared.
Black energy erupted all around and sent Vollu flying backwards with a force so violent that the older diviner had been caught off guard. Energy that was so dark that it engulfed everything within sight for a brief moment.
——
As the energy began to disperse, pure black mana ripped around the diviner in a whirlwind of death. Rin shuttered as Blake's mana began to coat his body in armor-like formations. It felt perverse and otherworldly. She remembered being told that tarot mages were only as powerful as their willpower and intent. What she saw now was the culmination of those two forces within Blake. This was his intent to kill Vollu. This was pure unadulterated hatred.
——-
He would kill Vollu.
Vollu was dead.
Death.
He needed it.
He needed to kill.
Vollu looked up and laughed. "What is that supposed to be?! You won't face me with the Divine Overdrive anymore?! You don't intend to go all the way? Pathetic!"
Pure black eyes with no white came up to meet Vollu's.
"My body is darkness," Blake chanted, his voice taking on a deeper more guttural tone. It almost sounded as if more than one voice spoke when he talked now. "My soul is the abyss. My heart is the void. Nothing shall exist."
"What," Vollu scoffed. "Are you a poet now?"
"Your mind shall twist," Blake continued in his demonic sounding voice. "Your heart shall dread. Your flesh shall bleed, from hate I bred. Tarot Art Necrose: Dark Knight."
Twin wings of black mana exploded from Blake's back; dark as the deepest pits of hell. A sword of shadows came forth to his hand; a blade made for the sole purpose of bringing death to his foes. A cruelly spiked pentacle shield, matching his sword, appeared on his opposite arm; not intended for just shielding, but for brutally wounding anyone who tried to attack him.
The dark mana seemed to flow from the wings and his back and molded itself over his body until he was covered in what appeared to be shadowy spiked armor. Armor that, much like his shield, was meant to harm any who would attack him.
Dark energy rose around him; condensing and merging with his armor until He had become completely unrecognizable.
The darkness that formed his helm split open into a fanged mouth and horns rose up.
This was no longer Blake. This was something else.
Blake closed the distance on Vollu in an instant, brimming with deadly intent. The elder barely had time to blink before he was slammed into by Blake's shield and shot backwards, blood being forced from his mouth.
The Dark Knight didn't stop there though. The raging diviner exploded after Vollu, sheathed his sword, and cracked a spiked fist into the elder man's stomach; sending the man crashing into the ground.
Vollu attempted to get back up, but Blake didn't let him. The younger diviner leapt into the air and slammed down on top of the older one, beginning to brutally pummel him with fist and shield while he roared in rage.
Kill.
Rip!
Murder!
DESTROY!
The anger was overwhelming him, replacing rational thought with violence and murderous intent. Vollu had taken something precious from him, now he would die. There would be nothing left but a puddle of blood.
Vollu brought up a red pentacle shield to block himself, but Blake grabbed it from in front of the man and shattered it down on its owner.
Kill.
KILL.
KILL!!!
The dark knight continued his onslaught of blows to the diviner below him.
Finally, Vollu shot a blast of red mana into the Dark Knight, sending him flying back.
The shadow covered man flipped with the force and landed on his feet, ready to shoot back forward. Yet Vollu's laughter made him pause.
He had to regain control of his senses. This wasn't him. He needed to st-
No!
He needed to kill!
"You see!" Vollu cackled. "This is exactly why you have to die! This exact reason! One loss, and it's nearly brought you to madness. This is why you cannot be allowed to live!"
"SHUT UP!!!" Blake roared as he shot towards the older man.
Kill!
He needed to rip this man in half!
Ten red swords materialized and pinned Blake's movements, allowing Vollu to stand up and dust himself off.
"It's hilarious that you think this can defeat me," the elder sighed. "Do you think you're powerful now, Blake Ryan? Do you think you've achieved something? Well you haven't."
Tears stung Rin's eyes. This wasn't Blake at all. Blake was compassionate and kind. The way he had been fighting was brutal and unforgiving. She understood his rage, but didn't understand how it had consumed him to the point of taking on this disturbing form.
"I will fucking kill you!" Blake screamed. "You utter piece of shit!"
He needed to kill!
He needed to stop.
He needed to kill!
He needed to stop.
"So what if you've achieved that half baked form!" Vollu laughed. "It all amounts to nothing! Your master is dead, you'll soon be dead, and then that girl behind you will be too! And besides! This isn't my limit. Experience the second release of my power! Mastery Form Stage Two: Divine Shogun!"
Power flowed from Vollu like a violent torrent. Repairing any damage that Blake or even Integra had done to his armor. Mana brimmed in every crevice and not a single portion of Vollu's skin showed anymore.
Vollu's overall presence emanated with power beyond even Blake's. The dark knight knew he was in danger, but his rage stripped him of any fear that he should have been feeling. All he felt was anger.
The black flame in Blake's heart burned hotter.
He needed to kill!
Blake roared and shattered the blades that bound him, dashing at Vollu.
"Now face your death." Vollu growled.
The man placed his left foot back and power began to boom behind him. The weight of his stance, and the shear force of the mana that he was emitting, began to crack the earth. The shogun grabbed ahold of the hilt of his Katana, as if about to draw it.
Blake's eyes went wide and shear instinct rolled him to the side. When he landed and looked up, the red shogun was gone from where he had been. Suddenly half of Blake's face mask shattered away and a small cut opened on the side of his neck. It wasn't deep, but it was clean.
Rin gasped as she took in the sight of Blake's exposed face. His revealed eye was wild and clouded with anger, and his skin looked red and agitated; almost as if the armor was eating away at him.
A sliver of clarity returned, and Blake spun around to see Vollu was now behind the position the knight had formerly held. The man flicked blood off of his sword as he sheathed it, and Blake became certain that if he hadn't dodged when he had, he would have been short a head. Yet he didn't care. He wanted Vollu dead. He would kill him.
He needed to kill him.
"That was quite the impressive dodge, boy." Vollu's voice echoed. "My divine draw has taken down many with power even greater than your own. Integra's training, and your natural potential speak volume with that movement. Even more so, that you were able to think rationally enough to dodge in that state."
Blake's head split into a painful headache as the black mana repaired the shattered part of his helmet. He could feel his consciousness fading and the rage consuming his being.
Rin continued to struggle and finally felt her limbs begin to move again. She shakily rose and stumbled to grab Integra, but Vollu flashed in front of her.
"Uh uh," the man taunted. "Can't be letting that happen."
The elder pulled his blade free of its sheath and swung down on the gem magus in one fluid motion, but his sword only met Blake's shield as the dark knight appeared between the two. The force of the blow was enough to bring Blake down to one knee, but the young diviner's defense held all the same.
"Like...I'd...let...you..." Blake growled under the strain.
His rage and his rationality were tearing a warpath through him. It had taken all of his will power to block the attack and not go for Vollu directly.
"Ah," Vollu smiled. "So you still have the humanity to protect. How cute. Why don't you just give in to your nature? I know that you want to kill me. Why waste your time on those two? You don't truly care about them! So why does it matter if you protect them or not?"
"SHUT UP!!!"
The younger diviner let out a roar as pitch black mana erupted from his shield and sent the samurai flying backwards.
"Get out of here!" Blake shouted at Rin as he followed after his opponent.
Blake blitzed forward and slammed his blade down on Vollu's, sending a shockwave of energy all about.
"It's hilarious that you think that you can hold me off!" Vollu laughed. "You have to remember, you're new to that form! Your Necro Form will fail long before my Mastery Form. Even now, it's tearing you apart!"
"Shut up!" Blake roared as he bashed Vollu in the face with the edge of his shield.
He had to keep his rage in check until Rin escaped.
The samurai crashed into the ground, but started to shake with laughter.
"This is incredible!" The elder cackled. "I haven't had a fight like this in a long time! You have succeeded in entertaining me a bit. But this fight is all but over."
Rin finally made her way over to Integra. The older woman was still breathing, but barely. She needed medical attention immediately.
"I have her!" The magus called to Blake.
Fight it off.
Rin needed to get out of there still.
"Then get the hell out of here!" Blake yelled without taking his eyes off of Vollu.
"Not without you!" Rin yelled.
"Damn it, Rin!" The diviner shouted back. His consciousness was fading. When that happened, he wouldn't be able to protect her. "Get going now!"
Rin bit her lip. She knew she had to get Integra out of there, but she couldn't just abandon the man she loved. Especially when he was like this. He was in a dark place right now. There was no way he could keep fighting like he was. She could already tell that the dark mana around him was taking a toll on his body and mind. The way his face had looked was proof of that.
"Go now!" Blake yelled.
The woman clenched her fists, making the choice she had to. If she stayed, she'd only be in the way. But...
"I'll see you soon," she whispered, then grit her teeth. "So don't you dare die on me! Do you hear me, idiot?! I won't forgive you if you do!"
Rin took out a gem and used it to summon a gate.
"I won't let them leave!" Vollu growled as he sprung towards them.
Blake slammed the blade of his sword into the older diviner's side and sent him flying away.
"You won't lay a finger on them!" He roared. "Ever again!"
"Damn you!" Vollu roared.
And with that. Rin pulled Integra through the gate.
Rin's words echoed in his head.
"I'll see you soon."
Blake sighed. "That was cruel, Rin." He sighed to himself. "Now I have to return alive."
