The emergency meetings needed to get the new republic underway were done at all levels. America was being restarted in that sense. Globalism was being kept at bay. Skull still had plenty of tricks up his sleeve and there would be future fights to come no doubt; but those were future fights. Cap's concern was now. America was safe. Cap was gone for good in that sense but a new cap of sorts had risen up instead. Us agent. Cap admired John Walker and considered him the successor he couldn't be.
In fact cap invited Walker to the Kirby. "Thanks for seeing me cap." "Always an honor agent Walker." "There honor is mine cap. You're America's greatest hero. We're gonna give you your medals back. Everything those bastards took away from you. We're gonna make it right. You have my word." Cap nodded. "I appreciate that. But I never needed them. I only wanted to serve and do what was right for Liberty's sake." "And you did that; Steve. That and then some. We will never forget what you've done for us; what you do for us. Ever." They shook hands firmly.
"Again I appreciate that agent Walker. There are things we need to discuss." "Name it." Cap exhaled. "Captain America may be retired and gone; but the new republic still needs someone like him. An American agent…" cap reached around and tapped agent's adamantium shield on agent's back. "I think that's you John." Walker was surprised. Cap was endorsing him to succeed him. "Are you sure about this Steve?" "I am." "What about you?" "I'm just nomad now. I'm a wanderer. I've hung up my old shield. I have another one now. I have a different mission now; for the one above all…" "your new Cinc?" "Something like that. Heaven is my only allegiance now."
Walker gave a lopsided grin. He understood where cap was coming from perfectly. He was a devout Christian after all. "I have no doubt the lord Jesus Christ sent you here to save us; as you did before." "Someone from that side of things did." Cap wasn't a Christian like Walker was but he sure as hell had no problems with Christians either. Cap loved Judaism too.
Christianity had created America. It had saved the world from evil. It had allowed cap to do what he'd needed to do for freedom. So why couldn't he be Christian? Because he had to do whatever it took to win; and that wasn't always the Christian way. Sometimes the suspect had to be tortured; a people interned; nukes launched. Sometimes even genocide… better to ask forgiveness than permission cap thought. But then again he often did neither. Sometimes the rules had to be broken for the greater good; situation ethics. Nonetheless like Lincoln he followed the Bible in his own way. No greater book had ever been written. Or ever would be. And it would be that good book that would save the world again. For like superheroes it saved; but best of all. It saved souls.
And… cap was more of an Old Testament kind of guy. Eye for an eye and so on. Christians were definitely more the New Testament. That was okay. Both were still the Bible. That was good enough for cap.
"I fully endorse you as the successor to Captain America; agent Walker; American agent." They shook hands again. "Thank you Captain Rogers. I'll never forget this."
