Damon hung up the phone with Matt. He had called them to tell them that Caroline had been at The Grill the whole time, meaning that Silas was somewhere with them, and that Kol and Marisol had paid them a visit looking for Elena. Toby pulled out his phone and passed it to Alaric.
"Call Stefan and tell him about Caroline. Tell him to keep an eye on Elena. God knows he'll do a better job than me."
"Stefan? Isn't she your girlfriend?" Alaric asked.
"Still don't have a clear answer on that, but that's not the point. Stefan is more experienced in this humanity switch business. I'm not. He'll know what to do. Just call him." He turned towards Damon and Elowen. "Come on."

Elena approached Jeremy's headstone at the cemetery and read the epitaph inscribed on it.
"'Brother and friend'? What genius came up with that one?"
She knelt down in front of the headstone and tried to keep her emotions in check.
"I give up, Jer. I really wanted to kill her for you, but there's no point." She reached out and picked up the dried up bouquet of flowers. "Stefan's right, it's just a distraction, and so's Angel. It's not worth it, just like he said. I didn't want to face it."
Elena twisted the flowers in her hands, then threw them back down on the ground. Her hands came up to cover her face for a few seconds, and when she pulled them away, she sniffled loudly and felt herself starting to cry.
"I can't- I can't do this. I can't- I can't move on, and I don't want to! If that makes me weak, then fine, I'm weak, but… I can't handle you… I can't handle you being gone. I can't handle feeling like this anymore."
She sobbed to herself for a couple of minutes before two people approached her from behind.
"Hello, old friend."
Elena stood up and turned around, coming face to face with Kol and Marisol.
"Pity about your brother. Guess it's just me against you now. Well, and Marisol, of course. Suppose I have an unfair advantage. Oh well."
Before Elena could react, a sudden head splitting pain shot through her, and she grabbed at her head with a small yell of pain. Kol smirked and glanced at Marisol.
"Thank you, darling."
Then, he sped at Elena.

Bonnie and Josiah were still down in the cave with Silas, who was still presenting himself as Caroline.
"Stay away from me," Bonnie said through clenched teeth. Josiah grabbed Bonnie and pushed her behind him. Silas saw this and chuckled lightly.
"Gladly." Silas turned and walked back a few paces. "Once you finish the spell. Then, when the veil is dropped completely, I can take the cure." Silas turned and pulled the cure out of his pocket. "I just want to pass on, Bonnie, Josiah. I'll even let you two kill me. I'll be out of your life for good."
Josiah shook his head. "But every dead supernatural creature will be roaming the earth."
"Well, if you don't help me, I'll be roaming the earth."
"I was never gonna drop the veil," Bonnie admitted from behind Josiah.
Silas tilted his head. "I'm curious. What was your plan? Pow-wow with Qetsiyah? Brainstorm ways to put me down? Qetsiyah's not coming. She wants me on the other side with her, for eternity."
"Bonnie? Bonnie!" Elowen's voice echoed through the tunnels.
"Bonnie! Where are you?" Toby's voice floated down after Elowen's.
"That sounds familiar," Silas said, his voice morphing from Caroline's into Alaric's, before his form stood there instead of Caroline. "Maybe your friends can convince you."
"I won't let you-" Bonnie tried to say, but Silas cut her off.
"Won't let me what?"
Suddenly, Bonnie and Josiah started to gasp for air.
"You feel that? The air thinning… barely enough to breathe."
Bonnie and Josiah slowly sank to the ground, struggling to breathe properly. Silas chuckled before turning and leaving the cave.

Kol kicked Elena to the ground while Marisol watched. Elena's face was bloody and bruised and she coughed, winded from Kol's physical attacks and Marisol's magical ones.
"Now, this is what I've missed," Kol said. "Two people connecting." He kicked her again. "It's lonely on the other side, isn't it, Marisol?"
Marisol nodded. "Uh-huh."
"And I swear, being invisible will drive you mad. The way you couldn't see my standing in front of you, or feel my breath on your cheek as I whispered all the ways that I wished for you to suffer." Kol grabbed Elena by the throat and lifted her to her feet. "But alas, now you can."
"Go ahead, Kol," Elena wheezed. "Kill me. You'd be doing me a favor."
Kol smiled. "As you wish, darling."
Before Kol could do anything else, he suddenly dropped Elena and sped around to catch a stake midair before it hit him in the back. Standing a few feet away from him and Marisol was Jeremy, who was holding a crossbow.
"How many times do I need to kill you?" Jeremy asked.
Kol huffed a little. "Jeremy Gilbert. Welcome back. Now, what's the saying? Kill me once, shame on you. Kill me twice, shame on-"
Stefan sped up out of nowhere and snapped Kol's neck, leaving him to fall to the ground, dead.
"Let's leave it at that, shall we?"
The next second, Stefan was grabbing his head in pain, along with Elena, and slowly sank to the ground. Marisol loomed over them, a deep glare in her eyes as they yelled out in pain.
"Marisol, stop!" Jeremy shouted, taking a few steps towards her. "You don't want to do this!"
Marisol rounded on Jeremy. "Shut up! You killed Kol! This is your fault!"
Jeremy slowly put down the crossbow and raised his hands in surrender. "This isn't who you are. I didn't have a choice-"
"Yes, you did! You could've stopped your stupid search for the stupid cure like Kol said so, but you ignored all of his warnings and now look at where you're at! Dead! And you want to know who else is dead because of you-?"
"Marisol, just listen-"
"No!" Marisol screamed, sending a blast of power at Jeremy that knocked him off of his feet. She covered her ears with her hands. "I'm not listening to you!"
Stefan and Elena continued to writhe around on the ground in pain while Jeremy, now disoriented, tried to push himself into a sitting up position. Angel, who had been abandoned when Stefan sped ahead to kill Kol, finally caught up and saw what was happening. He took one look at Marisol and had to double take, but quickly deducted that this couldn't be Elowen based off of what she was wearing and the difference in the length of hair (Elowen's hair was a little past her shoulders, while Marisol's reached the middle of her back). He quickly raised his hands up when her eyes landed on him, showing that he meant no harm, and he kept his distance.
"Hey," Angel said as non-threatening as he could. His eyes flickered to Stefan and Elena, then to Jeremy, before settling back on Marisol. "What's your name?"
Marisol stared at him for a long moment, as if trying to decide if he was friend or foe, before opening up her mouth to answer him.
"Marisol," she replied softly.
"Marisol," Angel repeated. "I'm Angel."
Marisol lightly shook her head. "I know. You have two sisters. Adriana and Veronica. They're very pretty."
Angel smiled softly. "I know. I think Veronica would appreciate the compliment."
"And Adriana?"
"I think it would make her really shy. She doesn't do compliments very well."
"How come?"
Angel shrugged. "No idea. Tell me, what is it that they did to you to make you so angry? Because you don't seem like an angry person to me."
Marisol's eyes fluttered down to Kol. "They killed him."
Angel followed her gaze. "And who's him?"
"Kol."
Angel racked his brain to try and remember who Kol was. He recognized the name. It finally clicked in his head a second later. Kol, the Original vampire Jeremy killed to complete his hunter's mark. The one Elena said Elowen flipped her lid when she saw him die. He remembered Marisol being mentioned that night. Elowen was her reborn, and she had left some kind of lasting impression on Elowen. Stefan also mentioned that Marisol had been in love with Kol. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly starting to fall together in Angel's head.
"I've heard of him. I've heard of you, too."
Jeremy had finally successfully pushed himself back to his feet, and Angel made the mistake of looking at him. Marisol looked as well, and the next second, one of Jeremy's legs made a sickening snap noise. He shouted in pain, falling to the ground again. Angel quickly got Marisol's attention again.
"Hey! Hey, hey, don't look at him. Don't look at Stefan or Elena, either. They're already suffering like you want them to, right? You want them to suffer because they killed the love of your life. I get it. I'd want to hurt the people who murdered the person I love, too, but is it really worth it? Revenge might feel good as it's happening, but once it's over… then what? They spend the rest of eternity on the other side with you?"
Marisol shook her head, keeping her hands over her ears. She crouched down and made herself into a small ball. "No. Stop talking."
Angel quickly changed the subject before she got mad at him and lashed out. Slowly, he started to approach her.
"Okay, I won't talk about it anymore. Let's talk about something else."
Once again, Angel's eyes flickered from Stefan and Elena to Jeremy. He was trying his best to diffuse the situation, preferably before Kol came back to life and killed them all, but he felt like he was running out of options.
"What do you want to talk about?" Angel asked. "How about we talk about what things were like when you were alive. How about that?"
Marisol thought this over for a moment before nodding.
"Okay," she said in a small voice. "When I was alive, it was obvious everybody only treated me nice because I looked like Elowen. I knew that deep down, they all wanted her back and that nobody wanted me, so I gave them what they wanted. It just wasn't fair. In order for me to live, she had to die, and in order for her to live, I had to die, and I didn't like the thought of taking somebody's life away."
Angel continued to creep his way towards Marisol. As he got closer, he started to get down on her level, squatting down until he was sitting in front of her. She lifted her head to look at him, but didn't protest or get mad, so Angel figured that he was doing something right.
"So you did the selfless thing and died so she could live. That means you're a good person."
"Does it? Kol said I shouldn't have been so kind. He said I should've been selfish because I deserved to live."
"And Elowen didn't?"
Marisol went quiet as she thought about this.
"... No, she did," Marisol said at last. "And she had so many people who loved her. I didn't want to take that away from her."
"Do you still feel that way?"
"What?"
"Do you still feel like you don't want to take away the people she loves?"
Marisol paused again to contemplate this. Finally, she slowly started to shake her head.
"No."
"Then I need you to do me a favor. I need you to stop hurting Stefan, Elena and Jeremy. These are people she cares about and you're hurting them."
Marisol looked over at Stefan and Elena, both of whom were clutching their heads in pain, then at Jeremy, who was on the ground holding his leg. It looked like she was thinking about it, but in the end, she shook her head. Angel quickly changed topics again.
"You said that they were only nice to you because you looked like Elowen. I doubt that was true. Think about how they treated you. Did it seem fake to you?"
After a beat, Marisol shook her head.
"No. Damon was really nice to me. I liked him, but he didn't like me back because I wasn't her."
"And that stung a little, didn't it? But that was real. It wasn't fake. Everything that happened when you were here was real, and right now, you're trying to kill them all. How can you do that when they treated you with kindness?"
"They killed Kol."
"Maybe they did, but is that enough to want them all dead? After all the hard work you did to make sure they were happy with Elowen, you want to wash that down the drain? Anger is a strong emotion, and something tells me you haven't experienced it enough before. You can't keep it bottled up. You have to let it go."
Slowly, tears started to pool in the corner's of Marisol's eyes. She looked up at Angel.
"How?" She asked in a whisper.
"You come to terms with it."
Marisol's eyes went over to Kol's body again.
"Elijah would be disappointed in me for trying to kill somebody."
Angel felt like he had heard Elijah's name before as well, but he still virtually had no idea who he was. Instead of asking, Angel played along. He nodded.
"Yeah, he would. You don't want to disappoint Elijah, would you?"
Marisol shook her head again. "No."
"Then let it go, Marisol. Be the bigger person. Stop hurting them. It's what Elijah would want."
Angel waited with a bated breath to see if this worked. The next second, Stefan and Elena breathed sighs of relief and let go of their heads. They both sat up and started pushing themselves to their feet. Angel stood and held out a hand for Marisol. She looked at it for a second before taking it, allowing him to help her up. Jeremy's leg seemed to stop hurting as well, as he got up and ran over to Elena. She wrapped her arms around his neck and started crying at the sight of him.
A sad look crossed Marisol's face. She would never get to experience what that was like, being missed the way Elena missed Jeremy. She had the chance and she decided to pass on it, so maybe she shouldn't be so upset about it, but she still was. Stefan walked over to her and stopped in front of her.
"Thank you," he said.
"I didn't do it for you," Marisol mumbled. "And this doesn't mean I forgive Elena or Jeremy."
"You don't have to, but you're being the better person and letting it go. Killing them would've only made you satisfied for all of 5 seconds. Trust me."
Marisol glanced down at Kol. "You should get out of here before he wakes up. He's not going to be happy about this. And if he gets the opportunity to kill Elena, I'm not stopping him."
Stefan sighed, but nodded in understanding. "Okay." He turned towards Angel and nodded his head towards Elena and Jeremy. "Come on. Let's go."

Bonnie and Josiah were still struggling to breathe. Josiah was on his hands and knees while Bonnie was trying to get back on her feet by using one of the rocks to hoist herself up, but it wasn't working.
"Bonnie," a voice said from behind her. She turned around and saw her Grams kneeling behind her. "This isn't real, Bonnie. Feel the air in your lungs. Break through-"
Bonnie tried shoving Sheila away. "Silas!"
"Would Silas try to save your life? Now breathe, child."
Slowly, Bonnie felt the air fill her lungs and she started breathing normally again. She quickly went over to Josiah and grabbed his shoulder.
"Josiah, you need to breathe."
Josiah shook his head. "I… can't…"
"Yes, you can! Breathe!"
Josiah took in a deep breath and let it out, beginning to breathe regularly again. Once they were both fine, they turned to Sheila and hugged her.
"I really wish Elowen were here right now," Josiah said as he pulled away. "I know she wanted to apologize."
"She has nothing to apologize for. What happened wasn't her fault. It was just my time." Sheila turned to Bonnie. "That was something I wanted to knock some sense into you for, blaming that poor girl for my death. She didn't deserve any of that guilt."
Bonnie bowed her head. "I know, Grams. I'm sorry."
"Let's not dwell on the past. Let's focus on the now. You can still stop Silas."
Bonnie shook her head. "No, I can't. Qetsiyah was able to immobilize him so he couldn't feed and get into people's heads. I don't know how to do that. I don't know how to put him down."
"You can do that. Expression is the manifestation of your will. You could do anything. I don't like it, but sometimes there are no choices. But you are strong enough. You can do this."
Out in the tunnels, Damon, Toby and Elowen ran into Alaric.
"Whoa, it's just me," he said. "I called Stefan. He's heading for Elena. Did you find Silas?"
"Yep," Damon replied, before hitting Alaric in the face with the butt of his flashlight. Elowen and Toby jumped back in surprise and Alaric fell to the ground. Damon dropped the flashlight and picked up an old chain that was on the ground, then started to strangle Alaric with it.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Toby asked loudly, trying to step forward to stop Damon, but Elowen grabbed him to stop him.
"Stop. That's not Alaric."
"What?"
"Damon, it's me!" Silas choked out, but Damon shook his head.
"No, you're not. I've spent more time in these tunnels than I care to admit, and there's no way you just came from the school. Your mind games don't work on me, Silas."
As Damon continued to choke Silas, Bonnie came into the tunnels, followed by Josiah.
"I may not be able to kill you, but I will stop you," Bonnie said before closing her eyes in concentration. A sudden gust a wind blew through the tunnels as she worked her magic. Josiah felt a wave of nausea wash over him as Bonnie was still anchored to him and therefore she was tapping into his energy. He dropped to one knee and Elowen quickly rushed over to make sure he was okay.
"I will make the blood clot in your veins. I will make every bone, muscle and joint in your body turn to stone. You won't have power over us anymore."
Damon had let go of Silas and he turned as if trying to get away, but only made it so far as his body started to harden into stone.
"What the hell is happening?" Damon asked as he watched Silas's body turn to stone, his hand coming up to cover his face.
"He can't hide behind his mind control anymore. He's becoming his true self," Bonnie replied.
"Who exactly might his true self be?"
"I guess we'll never know."
xxxx
Stefan had returned and him, Damon, Elowen, Bonnie and Toby were all talking together.
"You need to get rid of Silas's body," Bonnie was saying to Stefan and Damon.
"Well, there's a slight problem, Medusa," Damon replied. "Even though you turned him to stone, if he gets one more drop of blood, he's back to his old mind tricks."
"Alright, so let's go what we should've done to Klaus," Stefan suggested. "Let's drop his body in the middle of the ocean."
"Bonnie?"
Bonnie turned around and came face to face with Elena.
"I don't know what to say."
Bonnie shook her head. "You don't have to say anything."
"But I was so horrible to you."
"You weren't you. I know what that's like. I wasn't me for a long time. We can talk about it later." She smiled over Elena's shoulder at Jeremy. "You've got some catching up to do."
Jeremy nodded at her. "Thank you, Bonnie."
"I'll give you guys as much time as I can."
Jeremy came over and hugged her.
"But I have to put the veil back up."
With one last smile, Bonnie left. Josiah pointed after her.
"I have to go help her. She's still anchored to me and all."
He followed after her.
Stefan cleared his throat. "I should, uh, make sure Kol's body is somewhere safe until the veil goes back up."
"I'll go with-" Elowen started to say, but Stefan cut her off.
"No. You go spend what time you have left with Alaric. You and your mom. Okay?"
Elowen nodded. "Okay."
"I'll help him," Toby offered. "If that makes you feel better."
"Thank you. You two be careful, okay? Angel made it sound like Marisol wasn't too happy to see you guys."
Stefan sighed. "She wasn't, but can you blame her? We killed the love of her life. She has every right to be angry."
He looked over at Toby. "You ready?"
Toby nodded, and then him and Stefan left.
Damon huffed. "I'll take care of Silas." He looked down at Elowen and nodded his head in the opposite direction. "Come on."
Elowen nodded, then walked off with Damon, leaving Jeremy and Elena by themselves.
xxxx
After Stefan and Toby dealt with Kol's body and made sure Marisol wasn't going to try and hurt them (she actually hadn't said a word to them the entire time), they made their way towards The Grill. They walked in and sat at one of the tables, both of them equally dejected. Caroline entered the room and sat at the table with them.
"Good, you two are here. We need to celebrate!"
Stefan shook his head. "Yeah, I'm not really in the mood to, uh, celebrate."
Caroline frowned, looking between Stefan and Toby. "What's wrong with you two? Silas is dead, or whatever, and you guys are just sitting there like a bump on a log."
"There was someone that I thought I would see today, and, uh… I didn't. That's all."
"Ditto," Toby mumbled.
"You better be talking about us," a male voice said from behind them. Toby immediately perked up and spun around in his seat. A smile broke out on his face when he saw Mason standing there next to a blonde woman. Stefan had turned as well and smiled when he saw Lexi. They both stood up, Stefan hugging Lexi and Toby hugging Mason.
Mason pulled away. "Remind me to tell Elowen thank you for keeping an eye on your dumb ass. Listening to Damon? Are you insane?"
Toby sighed. "I know, I know. You don't need to lecture me."
Mason wrapped an arm around Toby's shoulders. "Come on. Let's get out of here."
xxxx
Josiah frowned as he watched Bonnie arrange candles around the underground cave.
"Bonnie, what are you doing? This doesn't look right."
Sheila appeared behind them and looked around the cave, also slightly confused. "You have to put up the veil, Bonnie."
"Not yet," Bonnie replied, setting up the last of the candles.
"Bonnie…" Josiah mumbled in warning. "What's going on?"
"I can bring Jeremy back! I can't keep him here."
"What? No!"
"You can't, Bonnie!" Sheila exclaimed in agreement.
Bonnie ignored them. "Elena needs him. This was always the plan. Jeremy wasn't supposed to die."
Sheila shook her head. "It was the will of nature. There is no magic in the world that is strong enough to challenge it."
"I have every magic! I have the spirits!"
Bonnie raised her hands and the flames of the candles shot up. She started chanting a spell and immediately, Josiah gasped for air and fell to his knees.
"Stop it!"
"I have expression!"
"Stop it, Bonnie! You're hurting him!"
Dark veins started to crawl underneath Bonnie's skin as she continued the spell.
"I have the darkness."
"Bonnie, don't!"
Bonnie ignored her and kept chanting. Josiah grabbed onto his chest and struggled to breathe. His wheezing turned into a fit of coughing and blood started dribbling down his nose. He looked up at Bonnie.
"Bonnie, please…"
Suddenly, Bonnie gasped loudly and collapsed to the ground. At the same time, Josiah's eyes rolled to the back of his head and he fell over.
The flames of the candles went out, shrouding the cave into darkness.
xxxx
Josiah started to stir on the ground, groaning lightly as he grabbed his head. Beside him, Bonnie came to as well. She looked around disoriented, but still managed to push herself to her feet. Josiah's eyes fluttered open and slowly he hauled himself into a sitting up position. A hand appeared in front of him and he looked up to see Bonnie standing over him. He took her hand and she helped him up. From behind them, Sheila placed a hand on each of their shoulders. They turned around to face her. She shook her head grimly.
"I'm sorry. The spell. It was just too much."
Sheila stepped to the side so that they could see their bodies lying on the ground. Josiah's eyes widened and he stared down at his body in shock, too frozen to say anything.
"Oh my god…" Bonnie mumbled. "We're dead."
