Another two weeks had gone by without Jacob fully resolving his issues. His wolf was becoming unbearable in his fight to see his mate. For the second time, Jacob had woken up in the middle of the forest behind Bella's house with no memory of how he had gotten there. He could only assume that his wolf side had taken over when he had finally fallen asleep.
The nightmares still came. So did dreams of ancestors, pointing him toward home. He knew it was time, though he had not managed to conquer his demons. He would need to begin taking his place soon.
God damn, I miss Bella.
He needed to go home and take a much-needed shower. Sleep in a real bed for a few hours. Charlie's headlights blinded him for a moment as he started up the cruiser. It took a moment for him to realize that Bella was standing outside, talking to Charlie.
"So, have you heard from Jake lately?" Charlie asked her.
"No, but I'm sure I will soon. He's busy, Dad, and he's going through some stuff."
"Yeah, I know he is," Charlie huffed. "Miss him, though. I'm sure you do, too."
Bella nodded.
"You guys are still together and everything, right," Charlie asked.
"Yes," she said firmly. "He can't get rid of me that easily."
Charlie chuckled as he climbed into the cruiser. "You still having dinner with me at Sue's tonight?"
"Absolutely," she said. "Wouldn't miss it. Love you," she called out to her father. Charlie waved back and pulled away.
She had gotten new pajamas. She was wrapped in a long gray robe, complete with cat ears on the hood.
How very un-Alice-like of her. Jacob could not help but chuckle at her choice.
I miss her. Jacob released an involuntary whine. She spun straight toward him. Shit.
"Jakey?" she whimpered. Jacob's wolf was clawing at him to go to her. He wanted his mate. Jacob ignored the urge and stayed as still as possible. When he did not reveal himself, she nodded to herself and began to cry. Her grief shot through him like an electric current, and he accidentally whined for her again. Again she looked up in his direction.
Damn it. He waited, silently.

"I can feel you," she said softly. "If you don't want to talk to me, that's fine. I'll… leave you alone. This is still a home for you too, Jake. Come in and shower. Sleep. Whatever you need to do," she broke off, shaking her head sadly. "You sound like a fucking idiot," she whispered to herself. She looked up in his direction one more time, her hands fluttering nervously to her stomach. "Just come home, Jacob. We need you." Bella turned and made her way into the house, sniffling.
Jacob wasn't sure if it was possible to rip your own heart out, but at that moment, he sure felt like it. He was putting her through hell because of his insecurities. Jacob took a deep breath and phased. As he was about to step out of the trees, Carlisle's sleek black car pulled into the drive. Bella returned from the house in a t-shirt and jeans. She was piling her wild curls on top of her head as she made her way to the car. Jacob was relieved to see Alice behind the wheel as Bella slid into the passenger seat. He had heard she had been keeping her distance from Edward, and from all he had seen, it was true.
"Are you ready for this," Alice asked.
"As ready as I'll ever be," Bella grumbled.
You're standing in your own way, Jacob Black.
Once they had left, Jacob made his way up to the back door and let himself inside. He ran upstairs to the bathroom and turned on the shower. Might as well get it while I'm here. Jacob went into Bella's bedroom to hunt down one of the many pairs of shorts he had left there. He was met with a gasp as he crossed the hallway.
How in the hell did I not hear her come back in? He opened his mouth to speak to her, but the words just would not come. I probably look disgusting, covered in dirt and sweat. Lord knows what I smell like. He was suddenly grateful that he had his own toothbrush at her house. He turned away from Bella and shut the bathroom door behind him. He did not have the right words to say to her anyway. Not yet.

They had barely driven halfway around the block when the Obstetricians office called to move Bella's first apt. Bella asked Alice to go ahead and drop her off at home so she could get an early start on her day.
Bella gasped at the sight of Jacob in her hallway. He was clutching a pair of his shorts, the shower running in the next room. He opened his mouth as if to say something and hesitated. Instead, he walked into the bathroom and shut the door.
Not ready to talk, I see. Bella gathered what she needed while trying to calmly disregard that Jacob was currently in her shower and acting like she was invisible. Bella scooped a serving of the lasagna she had made to take to Billy's onto a plate and put it in the microwave before she piled her usual stack of items into the cooler. When the microwave dinged, Bella stuck the plate on the kitchen table with a fork. She set a warm can of soda next to it and carried the cooler to her truck. Jacob was still in the shower as Bella pulled out of the drive. She turned up her radio and drove straight to La Push.

She was still wiping away tears as she pulled into Billy's drive twenty minutes later. She climbed out of the truck and began hauling the cooler to the house. The front door swung open, and a shirtless Paul strolled out, grinning. Bella could not help but grin back.
His smile faded as he took in her puffy eyes and blotchy face. He grabbed the cooler from her arms and hefted it inside for her. He sat the cooler down and pulled her in for a hug. She had not felt the warmth of one of the wolves in too long. Bella sunk into him, hugging him back tightly.
"So, you're here again," Bella chuckled. She jumped when she heard a giggling voice yell for Paul. She spun toward the voice, surprised to find a happy Rachel.
"Oh. Uh, hey, Bella," Rachel said and blushed. "Paul, will you come here in a minute?" Paul winked at her and she shut her bedroom door. Bella turned to Paul. He looked positively love-drunk.
I remember that feeling.
"Finally, huh?" she asked, and he shrugged. She scoffed.
"You okay?" he asked her.
"I will be," she said. "I saw Jake for a solid ten seconds this morning." Paul gaped at her.
"Wh-where," he asked in surprise. She laughed.
"He snuck in to grab a shower. He was still in there when I left. We didn't even speak," she admitted.
"Wow," Paul said and scratched his head.
"I know you all knew where he was. I'm not mad," she said. Paul actually had the decency to blush.
"I'm really sorry, Bella," he said.
"Don't be," she said and started pulling dishes from the cooler. "You guys are pack. You respect each other's choices. I get it, and honestly? I love you all for it, okay? Just get your baby Alpha to come home." She shoved dishes into Paul's arms and pointed at the deep freezer. He grinned and surprisingly obeyed. "You better go check on Rachel," She whispered as he shut the freezer lid. He wagged his eyebrows at her and darted into Rachel's room. Bella heard her giggling as soon as Paul shut the door. She finished putting dishes away and started cleaning up the living room. She got mostly through cleaning the kitchen when the giggling from Rachel's bedroom became too annoying to bear any longer. Bella hesitated as she made her way upstairs. She ducked into the bathroom to clean it and was surprised to find it relatively untouched. Had he not been coming home at all?
God, Bella. No wonder he didn't want to talk to you this morning. When was the last time he even had a shower? Brushed his teeth?
Bella forced herself to go into Jake's room for the first time since he'd taken off. It looked almost exactly as it had the morning they'd had sex in here. He had not been coming home.
Bella stripped Jacob's bed and gathered what dirty laundry she could find lying around. She was surprised when she spun around to find him standing behind her in the doorway. She shrieked and dropped the laundry at her feet. He smirked at her.
"You don't have to do that," he said. The sound of his voice was both musical and maddening.
Don't pick a fight, Bella. Don't do it.
"Are you okay?" she managed to ask. He nodded.
Still not talking to me. Okay, then.
Bella walked past him and out the door, her skin tingling as she brushed against his side. He followed Bella silently down the stairs and into the kitchen. She started piling empty dishes into the cooler to take home with her. When she finished, Jacob stepped around her and lifted the cooler, carrying it out to the truck. Paul had poked his head out of Rachel's room, watching curiously. Bella looked at him and shrugged, shaking her head. Paul gave her an encouraging smile, motioning for her to follow Jake outside before shutting Rachel's door.
Bella walked past Jacob to the driver's side of her truck and climbed in.
"I guess I'll see ya," she said as calmly as she could manage.
"Bells, wait," he said.
"You're not ready. I get it," she choked out.
"I want to talk to you, Bella. I just don't know where to start," he said. She nodded, biting her bottom lip.
"Come and see me when you figure it out," she said and put the truck in reverse. She left him staring after her as she backed down the driveway.
I'm getting sick of repeating this view, she thought as she pulled onto the highway and drove away.

Bella turned off into Sam and Emily's driveway hoping like hell that Jacob wouldn't just follow her here, too. Whatever this game was that he was playing today was too painful. Emily greeted her with a smile and a warm hug as she climbed out of her truck. She followed her inside and was surprised to find Billy sitting comfortably at the kitchen table drinking coffee. Sam was beside him, his nose buried in the sports section of a newspaper. Bella grinned and bent down to hug Billy.
"My other daughter," he said lovingly. "How are you today?"
Bella had to bite her lip to stop it from trembling. Billy grabbed her hand and squeezed it.
"I just saw Jake," she said. Sam, Emily, and Billy all looked at her in surprise. "He's at your house. I dropped some food off and cleaned a little."
"Go figure," Billy said. "I came here to get a break from Rachel and Paul. I don't know whether to be happy that Rachel is happy or annoyed because it's Paul."
Sam laughed. "A little of both, I'd imagine," he said.
"Are you alright, Bella? Did you two talk," Emily asked.
"Just for a second," she said. "I told him to find me when he is ready."
Sam nodded. "He'll come around, Bella."
"I know," she said, unconsciously cupping her lower abdomen. It did not go unnoticed. "Anyway, I just wanted to swing by and say hello. I'm going to head back on out. I have a lot to get done today." She waved at them and quickly stepped outside. There would be no confiding in Emily today, she thought as she opened her truck door.
"Bella, wait," Billy called after her. He was wheeling himself toward her truck. She turned back to meet him halfway. He looked her over, smiling as his eyes brimmed with tears. She shot Sam and Emily a glance through the open door. They both looked away, pretending not to listen.
Shit. They knew somehow. Bella's hands fluttered back to her abdomen, and she looked back down at Billy.
"Does he know," Billy asked her quietly.
"Not yet," Bella said. "I want to be the one to tell him, Billy. Please don't say anything."
Billy made an x over his heart, still smiling.
"How could you tell," she asked.
"Sam can hear the heartbeat, Bella," Billy said. Bella gaped in surprise.
Shit. What if Paul heard it as well? What about Jacob?
"What about Charlie," Billy asked, interrupting her thoughts.
"I'm still breathing, aren't I?" Bella said, and he laughed. Billy sighed and shook his head.
"I could box my boy's ears right now," he grumbled and laughed again.
"It really was an accident," Bella said in Jacob's defense. "I was on antibiotics. Carlisle said they made my birth control ineffective for a few weeks. We honestly didn't know."
"That's not what I mean, daughter," Billy said sadly. "I'm not angry. He is missing out on wonderful things. I hope he gets it together soon."
"So do I, Billy," Bella said and sighed. "Everything's coming together for us. We're going to be able to start a really good life together." Billy squeezed her hand again. "He wants to get his head straight before he takes on all of these things that we've planned. I get it. His place will be waiting when he's ready."
"You truly love my son," Billy said. It wasn't a question.
"More than anything," she said firmly. "Regardless of what Jacob believes. Sometimes I think we both forget that we are still just kids, too, Billy. I feel like Jake is going through a midlife crisis at seventeen."
"You have both been through more than your share of pain, Bella. Your bodies are young, but your souls are ageless. Sometimes I forget that you are both just kids, too," Billy admitted. "You two were so connected when you were little. I would not doubt it if you have spent other lifetimes together."
Bella smiled. It was a beautiful thought, multiple lifetimes with her Jacob.
"I'm afraid he's going to freak out," she admitted. "He already has too much pressure. I don't know how to tell him."
"Do you know how far you are?" Billy asked.
"Nine weeks," Bella said.
"The week of the battle?" he asked in surprise.
"The morning of, actually," she admitted, blushing.
"Sarah did that with Jacob," Billy said, chuckling as he gestured to Bella's hands. "She was always cradling her belly, long before there was anything to see. She could not wait to hold him. She swore it was a boy as soon as she found out. She was determined to have a boy and name him Jacob." He chuckled. Bella beamed at him.
"That's exactly how I feel, Billy," Bella said, grinning. "I can't help it. At first, I was terrified, but as soon as I knew for sure, I just," she paused, searching for the right words. "I want to hold her so much," she said happily. Billy raised his eyebrow at the use of "her," though he stayed silent.
"Did Sarah believe we would end up together as you and Charlie did?" Bella asked.
"Absolutely," he said and laughed. "It used to piss your mom off, too."
"God, I don't even want to know what Renee will say," Bella said, biting her lip. "I haven't spoken to her in so long. It feels like a million years ago. I still don't want her drama, but she has been on my mind."
I need to see if Phil ever emailed me back.
"I imagine becoming a mother would make one think of their own," Billy said. "You make me think of your grandmother. She was strong and kind. She fed everyone who came in the door. She put us in our places, too." He laughed. "You remind me of her when you go after Jacob."
"I hope Charlie doesn't hate me for this. Or Jacob," Bella said. "He lectured me about getting pregnant too young. Jacob's younger than Dad was when I was born," Bella confessed.
"For what it's worth," Billy said, "I'm thrilled. I couldn't ask for anything better. You let me handle your dad where Jacob's age is concerned. That is my job. I wouldn't worry so much if I were you, daughter. Charlie loves you more than life itself." Bella grinned and bent down to hug him again.
"I love you, Billy," she said and kissed his cheek. "Thank you for always being so understanding. I don't know what Charlie and I would do without you." Billy smiled, tearing up again.
He's such a softie. "I'll see you soon, Grandpa," Bella teased him.
"You can count on it. I love you, too." Billy turned to wheel himself back inside the house as Bella waved one last time at Sam and Emily. She made a zipper motion across her mouth, pointed at Emily, and Sam roared with laughter. Sam was bending down to hug Billy as she drove away.
Hoping like hell that no one else found out she was pregnant before she was ready, Bella steered her truck toward Forks.
