-Chapter-36-And solo it begins-
-Shelby pov-
Today is the day I'm regretting the most. We are getting close to the regionals competition. So now we have to have our solo tryouts. Rachel probably has a solo prepped and ready.
We still haven't addressed Tina. It is not that I dislike the girl. But at the same time it's not like I trust her. She could be a spy for someone else.
I guess we can find out in a bit. But if she turns out to be a spy it's on Rachel. She should have just let me deal with it. She can be so stubborn sometimes!
"Just like you" I jump and turn to see Diana in the doorway "You are thinking about Rachel being stubborn just like a young certain Corcoran was"
"I was not" I sigh and grimace "Was I?"
"You could never be wrong" Diana walks in with a smile on her face "You always had to be right..sometimes I thought you would be more like your mom than anything else"
"Did you ever know my dad?" I don't miss the look on Diana's face "What? Was he that bad?"
"He was not a good man" Diana sits down beside me "He was..well he...you and your mother had a good life with him for a short while..but when he got back on his addictions..things went south"
I look at the piano in front of me "Did he ever hit her?" I look at Diana as she shakes her head "He hit me?"
"She found a bruise on you one day when she came back from work" Diana's face morphs into anger "It took everything I had not to beat him within a inch of his life! If it was not for your mom being there I would have!"
"What happened?" Diana's anger turns into sadness "Di?"
"He was drunk driving" Diana shakes her head before sighing "He went off the road and only his car was found for months"
"Wow" I look back at the piano "I never knew"
"Your mom didn't want you to" Diana sighs "She took it hard and turned to drugs and alcohol"
"That's when you got me" Diana hums in agreement "Should I apologize to Tina and Rachel?"
"Rachel for sure" Diana stands up "I'll be back for you solo tryouts! I can be a unbiased judge for them instead of you"
I nod and stand up "Thank you" I hear her start walking away and speak again "I don't mean just for judging the tryouts"
"I know beautiful" I turn and see her smiling "You have grown up to be an amazing woman..you make me and your mom proud"
"Thank you" She walks out and I just stare at the door "I hope you know you are my mom too Diana"
-time skip-
The glee club is slowly filing into the room. Diana is sitting in a chair against the wall. I wonder if I can talk she into expanding a wall out. I don't wanna kick the Computer club out of the old club room.
"Is everyone in?" There's some nods and I clap "I hope all of our wannabe soloist have their songs ready!"
"I do!" Sugar stands up "Can I go first?"
"Uhh sure" Rachel didn't jump up "Floor is yours"
Sugar makes her way to the front with a smile. She looks at our band kids and nods. Soon music starts to fill the room.
-Sugar singing-
Becky was a beauty from south Alabama
Her daddy had a heart like a nine-pound hammer
Think he even did a little time in the slammer
What was I thinkin'?
She snuck out one night and met me by the front gate
Her daddy came out wavin' that twelve gauge
We tore out the drive he peppered my tailgate
What was I thinkin'?
Oh, I knew there'd be hell to pay
But that crossed my mind a little too late...
'cause I was...
[chorus]
Thinkin' 'bout a little white tank top sittin' right
There in the middle by me
I was thinkin' 'bout a long kiss man just gotta get
Goin' where a night might lead
I know what I was feelin'
But what was I thinkin'... what was I thinkin'
By the county line the cops were nippin' on our heels
Pulled off the road and kicked it in four-wheel
Shut off the lights and tore through the corn field
What was I thinkin'?
Out the other side she was hollerin' faster
Took a dirt road and had the radio blastin'
Hit the honky tonk for a little close dancin'
What was I thinkin'?
Oh, I knew there'd be hell to pay
But that crossed my mind a little too late...
'cause I was...
When a mountain of a man with a "born to kill" tattoo
Tried to cut in I knocked out his front tooth
We ran outside hood-slidin' like bo duke
What was I thinkin'?
I finally got her home at a half past too late
Her daddy's in a lawn chair sittin' on the driveway
Put it in park as he started my way
What was I thinkin', oh what was I thinkin'
Then she gave a come-and-get-me grin
And like a bullet we were gone again... 'cause I was
Thinkin' 'bout a little white tank top sittin' right
There in the middle by me
I was thinkin' 'bout a long kiss man just gotta get
Goin' where a night might lead
I know what I was feelin'
But what was I thinkin'... what was I thinkin'
By the county line the cops were nippin' on our heels
Pulled off the road and kicked it in four-wheel
Shut off the lights and tore through the corn field
What was I thinkin'?
Out the other side she was hollerin' faster
Took a dirt road and had the radio blastin'
Hit the honky tonk for a little close dancin'
What was I thinkin'?
Oh, I knew there'd be hell to pay
But that crossed my mind a little too late...
'cause I was...
The club applauds and sugar makes her way to her seat. Tina is the next one up. Rachel still hasn't moved up. Did I miss something?
-Tina singing-
Will you count me in?
I've been awake for a while now
You've got me feelin' like a child now
'Cause every time I see your bubbly face
I get the tingles in a silly place
It starts in my toes
And I crinkle my nose
Wherever it goes
I always know
That you make me smile
Please stay for a while now
Just take your time
Wherever you go
The rain is falling on my window pane
But we are hiding in a safer place
Under covers staying dry and warm
[Another version of the song says: "Under covers staying safe and warm"]
You give me feelings that I adore
They start in my toes
Make me crinkle my nose
Wherever it goes
I always know
That you make me smile
Please stay for a while
Now just take your time
Wherever you go
But what am I gonna say
When you make me feel this way
I just mmmmm
And it starts in my toes
Makes me crinkle my nose
Wherever it goes
I always know
That you make me smile
Please stay for a while
Now just take your time
Wherever you go
Dada dumdudum dumdadadadadum
Ohbodododododododum mmm mmm
I've been asleep for a while now
You tuck me in just like a child now
'Cause every time you hold me in your arms
I'm comfortable enough to feel your warmth
It starts in my soul
And I lose all control
When you kiss my nose
The feeling shows
'Cause you make me smile
Baby, just take your time
Now holdin' me tight
Wherever, wherever, wherever you go
Wherever, wherever, wherever you go
Wherever you go
I always know
'Cause you make me smile
Even just for a while
The club claps again and I will admit she was good. I watch her go back to her seat. It's a few minutes before Quinn stands up. Rachel moved to lean into sugar.
-Quinn singing-
I am an arms dealer
Fitting you with weapons in the form of words
And don't really care which side wins
As long as the room keeps singing
That's just the business I'm in, yeah
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
I'm not a shoulder to cry on
But I digress
I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate
I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate
I wrote the gospel on giving up
(You look pretty sinking)
But the real bombshells have already sunk
(Prima donnas of the gutter)
At night we're painting your trash gold while you sleep
Crashing not like hips or cars,
No, more like p-p-p-parties
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This bandwagon's full
Please, catch another
I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate
I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate
Yeah...
Whoa-oh
All the boys who the dance floor didn't love
And all the girls whose lips couldn't move fast enough
Sing, until your lungs give out
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
(Now you)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
(Wear out the groove)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
(Sing out loud)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
(Oh, oh)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate
I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate
The club claps and she makes her way to her seat. I look around to see if anyone will get up. When no one does Diana stands up. I watch her walk to the front.
"As the judge I will say I enjoyed all of these!" She smiles and looks at the club "After listening and thinking about it all...I have chosen...Sugar! I honestly liked it and Tina was very close to winning"
"Ouch" Quinn pouts "Love you too nana"
"Meeting dismissed" I stand up and point to Rachel "You stay"
"Ok" Everyone slowly leaves but Rachel "What do you need?"
"To apologize for taking away you being able to judge" I sigh and walk over to her "It was nothing against you...I just don't trust Tina right now"
"I understand" Rachel sighs "But I think she really is on our side"
"I guess we will see" She nods and I hold my hand out "Now let's get home"
She smiles and lets me help her up. I hope this clears the air some. I can at least hope it does. But only time will tell.
Guess we will know soon enough.
