It had been five days since Cole and Kai had seen Wendy outside the hospital and, as expected, as soon as Nya found out about Wendy shouting at her brother in the parking lot, she started lecturing him about not keeping the baby. When they asked how she found out Nya said that some people there had filmed most of the confrontation and posted it online. When they checked they saw the video was already trending on YouTube. There were some comments trolling Wendy, saying she was an insane, entitled grandmother, who clearly didn't know when she clearly wasn't wanted.
But some of the comments were directed at Kai.
They were saying that Kai was being selfish for denying Wendy the right to her grandchild and his baby the chance to know their extended family. This new information only added to Kai's fear. During the last couple of days, a still frightened Kai admitted to his new boyfriends that he was scared as Wendy knew where he lived. So he resolved to get away to somewhere where nobody knew him and where Wendy couldn't get to him. The three agents took Kai in their arms again and promised him things were going to be alright.
When Skylor found out, she told Kai that it wasn't like him to run away.
But Kai didn't view it as running away, he viewed it as self-preservation and stated what mattered was being able to bring his baby up without having to look over his shoulder. Skylor said that she understood him, but refused to let Kai do this alone so she decided to move away with him. He was understandably shocked by this, but she was being very serious. Cole, Jay, and Zane had told him that if he honestly believed that moving was the best option, then they would help him and still visit whenever they could.
Jay even offered to speak to the landlord about breaking his current lease with him and move out with them, which Kai was grateful for.
If only Nya was that understanding. When she found out, she pulled Kai away and got him alone. She tried to explain that she believed Kai was rushing into this decision and reminded her big brother he could stop Wendy from harassing him without leaving but Kai believed moving was the only way. When she realized she wasn't going to be able to convince Kai, she approached Skylor to talk about her and Kai moving away. She insisted that Kai's vulnerable state didn't make running away the right decision.
Nya also told Skylor she wished they would stay as she can't imagine her life without either of them around.
Skylor admitted she wouldn't have chosen to start over without a job but she saw what Kai was going through and realized that a fresh start could be good for her too. She then took her complaints to Jay, saying that if he moved with Kai and Skylor then she would have nowhere to live. Jay quickly reassured her, saying that by the time it took them to move, Kai would be around his due date and Nya would be starting work at the CIA after the summer.
Without a leg to stand on, Nya had no choice but to sulk off to her room.
That was a few days ago and the younger Smith sibling has refused to speak to anyone anymore. When Kai woke up that morning, he was surprised to see Jay cleaning every nook and cranny of the apartment.
"Someone's pulling out all the stops I see." He smiled weakly, causing Jay to jump slightly. When he saw his boyfriend, Jay took his hand and gave it a comforting squeeze. The three agents had been careful about touching Kai where he didn't want to be touched, which he greatly appreciated. They only gave him hugs or kisses when he really needed it.
"The landlords coming around later." He replied.
"Are you sure about this?" Kai asked, slightly fearing Jay and the other might get cold feet. "Once the landlord finds a new tenant there's no going back."
"You need us, and we promised to love and support you in everything from now on," Jay reassured affectionately before breaking out with a big grin. "Plus, I barely managed to unpack anything anyway." He joked and Kai laughed. The moment was suddenly interrupted by the sound of a door slamming. They looked into the hallway where they saw Nya glaring at them before she stormed into the bathroom.
"I just wish she could accept that a clean break is the only choice I've got." Kai sighed sadly.
"She'll come round Kai," Jay reassured the brunette. "We can make this work, and who knows, this might turn out to be the best thing we've ever done." He promised when all of a sudden a loud rumbling echoed through the room. Jay chuckled as Kai blushed brightly from embarrassment. "You put your feet up and I'll cook us some breakfast." He beamed as he headed to the kitchen to rustle up some grub.
"What would I do without you?" Kai giggled lightly...
After a couple of hours of cleaning and arrange the apartment and after a hearty breakfast, Jay, Skylor, and Kai headed out to a nearby cafe to get some well-earned hot drinks. Whenever Nya emerged from her shared bedroom, all she did was glare daggers at the trio and didn't bother to help. Kai knew she was upset, but he was still refused to see her as the victim in this. She had to learn that she couldn't have everything she wanted in this world.
"I think we've earned a coffee, don't you?" Jay smiled as they sat at a table and waited for a barista to come and take their order.
"Yeah, your apartment is officially spotless." Skylor grinned.
"Well it's on me, it's the least I could do," Kai said, leaving no room for argument as he pulled out his wallet. As he pulled out the cash, all three of them were in shock when Nya suddenly walked into the cafe.
"I thought I saw you three come in here." She sighed as she took a seat in between Skylor and Kai.
"Maybe because you've been watching my every move all morning," Kai growled, but his expression softened when he saw her wince. "We're going Nya, that's all there is to it." He stated and Nya turned to glare at Skylor.
"Oh, so you haven't told him how you really feel then?"
"That's low." She growled.
"What'd you mean?" Kai asked until he came to his own conclusion. "You're having second thoughts?"
"I had a wobble, that's all." She reassured.
"I call it a little bit more than that," Nya muttered before Skylor glared harshly at her.
"Only 'cause you kept pushing it! It's a big move! I'm bound to have ups and downs aren't I?!"
"Then talk to me about them because you know she'll just find a way to use it against us," Kai replied as a barista walked over to their table.
"Hello, what can I get you all today?" She asked with a clearly fake smile.
"Actually, it's fine, I've got stuff to sought out back at the apartment." He told her as he, Jay, and Skylor made to leave. Before he left, however, Kai turned back to Nya with a frustrated look on his face. "Nice try sis."...
Nya didn't return to the apartment for the next hour after talking to the others in the cafe. She knew why Kai wanted to move, but she had to get him to see that that wasn't the answer to this problem. He only had to get rid of that little brat and things could go back to the way they were. Morro wouldn't have any control over their lives from his cell and Wendy wouldn't keep stalking them. Kai wasn't thinking straight. His emotions were all over the place.
When that parasite was flushed out, then Kai would see it was the best thing for everyone, including the baby.
How would the baby feel if it found out how it was conceived and what its father had done to so many innocent people in Ninjago and beyond? She knew she wasn't always being fair, but she felt Kai was just as selfish for putting his child through that later in their life. When she did finally return to the apartment complex, she found Skylor smoking outside while Kai and Jay standing in the lobby talking to the landlord. As soon as the red-haired woman saw her, she quickly intercepted her.
"Look's like it's going well with the landlord, so don't go and spoil it with any more stupid ideas." She growled, stomping her cigarette out on the pavement.
"Look, I know I'm being selfish but I don't want to lose either of you." Nya sighed.
"Then don't push us away," Skylor replied. "Just because we won't be here doesn't mean we can't be part of your life." She promised the noirette. Before Nya could say anything, Skylor suddenly growled when a car pulled up across the road and Wendy climbed out and began to walk up to them. Kai and Jay also saw her through the large glass doors.
Jay quickly led the landlord up to check the apartment, not wanting him to witness the incoming argument, and Kai stepped outside as Skylor got up in Wendy's face.
"You shouldn't be here."
"I've taken time off work." She replied and turned to Kai, showing the brunette she hadn't been sleeping properly. "Kai, please, we're all intelligent people, I'm sure we can just sit down and talk this out." She pleaded. Kai thought about it for a moment and, despite Nya and Skylor sending him clear signals to say no, he sighed in defeat.
"There's this cafe we can go to." He said and he started to lead the older woman away with Skylor by his side. Nya shook her head in disbelief as she went up to the apartment. Kai was very relieved that she didn't join them at the cafe, knowing his sister well enough to know she would almost certainly beat Wendy up. The last thing Kai wanted for his sister to have a criminal record. He was also now dreading returning to the apartment, now Nya had more ammunition for her abortion argument.
Kai, Skylor, and Wendy were soon sat in a secluded corner in the cafe to talk somewhere neutral and private.
Wendy had wanted to speak to Kai alone, but there was no way Skylor or anyone else would allow that to ever happen.
"Wish that was a large brandy." Wendy weakly joked after the barista gave them three large mugs of hot cocoa.
"Why're you here?" Kai asked, getting straight to the point so they could finish this unwanted talk.
"Because you're keeping the baby and I want to know why you lied." She replied as if it was the most oblivious thing in the world.
"He doesn't have to explain himself to you or anyone else." Skylor glared.
"I suppose not, but a first grandchild, having that experience of caring for a child over again, but this time with the knowledge and wisdom you've gained from raising your own child, must be so lovely and I don't want to have mine born into this mess." She replied as tears welled up with tears. "I'm sorry I need a minute." She said and quickly excused herself to clean up in the women's restroom.
"You know if she was just some woman sat there upset I'd try and help her." Kai sighed.
"You wanna leave while she's gone?" Skylor suggested.
"No, let her have her say, she'll get tired then she'll leave." He replied, at least, that's what he hoped would happen.
"I'm so proud of you," Skylor reassured him with a smile. "You're so calm, and I just want to hit her." She added and Kai laughed just as Wendy returned. A very awkward silence descended among the table as Wendy loudly sipped her hot cocoa while Skylor and Kai let theirs grow stone cold.
"How long have you lived here? It's a lovely neighborhood." She finally said, trying to ease the tension, but neither of them dignified that with a response. "Um... so how are you coping after everything that happened with your father's business?" She asked and Skylor saw red. She suddenly leaned forward across the table, startling both Kai and Wendy for a moment.
"Listen bitch, we'll never know each other, I'll never confide in you, we share nothing." She stated clear and it was very clear that she was only just holding back from slaughtering Wendy where she sat. Morro's mother wasn't fazed, however.
"But we do, we care for the welfare of that baby." She replied and looked to Kai. "Ask anyone who knows me, I'm a good person who's always a laugh." She tried to convince him, but he was not showing any sympathy. "Y-You could meet my friends and hear it from them?" She offered, growing more and more desperate.
"I don't want to meet your friends." He growled.
"But if you ask people you'll know I'll be such a good grandma."
"It's not you that's the issue." Skylor pointed out.
"You're a loyal family, so is mine, but neither of us was there that night and we know he's definitely lied about having the baby." She told the red-haired woman and this time it was Kai who saw red.
"You need to leave, NOW!" He snarled in rage, but Wendy glared at him.
"What other lies have you told? About Morro?" She demanded. "That's just as much my grandchild as it was to your parents if they were still alive." She added and Kai's amber eyes widened in horror when she mentioned his parents. "What? You seriously believe that I wouldn't research the one who's trying to deprive this child of its family?"
"GET OUT!" Skylor roared as she rose from her seat, causing a few people to stare at them. Wendy wasn't fazed by this act of aggression as she stood up as well.
"I've been to see Morro and he's devastated by all of this, he knows that this isn't right; but rest assured, if I get custody I'd let you lot have access and make sure the baby could visit their daddy." She said and Kai paled at this. "A child needs all of its family, and if we can see that why can't you?" She asked angrily before storming out of the cafe, leaving the two friends alone at the table with all the other customers and staff staring at them...
After the confrontation with Wendy at the cafe, Kai and Skylor returned to the apartment to find that Jay had called Cole and Zane over to tell them what had happened. As soon as they saw him, all three wrapped their other boyfriend into a comforting group hug, which he happily returned. When she knew he was going to be alright, Nya quietly dismissed herself and retreated to her room and no one tried to stop her. Kai sat on the couch and explained to the others what happened at the cafe.
"Guys I'm scared and she knows that I lied about the baby which proves to her that I lied about the rape." He whimpered and Jay sat next to him and wrapped his arm around his shoulders.
"The woman's insane," Cole growled, but Kai shook his head.
"She's a mother sticking up for her son, who is clearly whispering lies and suggestions into her ear all the way from prison."
"I thought Morro wasn't allowed to have any visitors?" Jay asked.
"He is only refused visits from his victims and his known criminal associates," Zane replied. "Unfortunately, his mother isn't on either of these lists, and unless we can prove that they are discussing criminal activities she can't be denied contact with Morro."
"What about her claims that she could get custody of the baby?" Skylor asked.
"Grandparents can get custody of their grandchildren in situations where parents are unable to care for their children," Zane replied and everyone stiffened at this revelation. "This can be done by grandparents obtaining temporary or permanent custody which is also known as special or legal guardianship; they also have the option of adopting their grandchildren."
"How?!" Cole exclaimed in anger.
"This situation usually applies where the parents of a child are unfit to care for their children, parents of a child want grandparents to have custody of their child, a child is suffering from abuse or neglect at home, or the parent is suffering from a mental illness or is subject to drug and alcohol abuse." He explained. "The courts will always consider the wellbeing of a child when coming to a decision which focuses on a child and in certain scenarios grandparents may be best placed to care for their grandchildren."
"There's no fucking way a judge would give Wendy a baby!" Skylor shouted.
"She's right! When they find out how her son Morro turned out, she'd be lucky to be allowed within ten feet of kids!" Cole agreed, but Zane sighed sadly.
"All Wendy would have to prove was that she could provide a safe and stable home for the baby; and by the sounds of it, she seems to be taking legal advice on the matter of gaining full or joint custody."...
