Chapter 36: Blake

Blake's eyes shot open as he bolted upright in bed, instantly regretting the movement when pain jolted through his entire body. The diviner flinched and hissed from the sudden attack from his own pain receptors and had to stay still for a while until the pain faded to a dull ache.

As the pain settled, Blake took the opportunity to look around at his surroundings. He was shocked to find that he was in a familiar room. His room in fact. The one at his house in the states. Everything was how he remembered leaving it. Boxes were still stacked in the corner and his shelves were completely empty; exactly as they had been when he had left for Germany.

The fan spun steadily above his head and the window was cracked to let in some fresh air. The sound of cars passing by in the neighborhood reached his ears and the vague scent of dust met his nose.

He was home. But how?

Had everything been a dream? Had all his adventures and trials been nothing more than something his mind created. But it had been over a year of experiences, on top of the millennium of training in his inner world.

That's when he felt the movement at his side, and all his panic evaporated. As he looked down, he took in the sight of Rin sitting in a chair next to his bed with her head resting on the side of his mattress. She looked so peaceful. He didn't want to wake her, so he just watched as she snored away in peaceful bliss.

As he watched his partner sleep, he began to think about the previous events. How had he gotten here? Where was Vollu? All he remembered was falling through his own blood and waking up here.

Another thought crossed his mind. Where was Integra?! Panic came over him and he began to look around.

Blake carefully got up, so he wouldn't wake Rin, but the second his feet touched the floor, he began to fall over. The man tried to call a pentacle to catch himself on, but for some reason, his deck didn't even materialize, causing him to crash to the ground.

What was going on?

Where was his deck?

That's when the memory hit him.

A hand shoved in his chest. The ripping of his very being. The fading of his power.

"Oh my god!" He heard Rin's voice behind him. "Blake! What are you doing! You need to get back in bed."

Blake pushed what he had just been thinking about to the back of his mind as slender but strong arms wrapped around him and helped pull him up.

"Where's Integra?!" He interrogated, struggling against Rin taking him back to his bed. "I have to see her!"

A sad look crossed over the magus's face and her face fell. "If I show you, will you calm down and get back in bed?"

Blake nodded, feeling some of the panic leave him.

Rin pulled his arm over her shoulders and helped him walk. The magus led him out of his room and turned right, towards the master bedroom.

As they entered, Blake took in the sight of Ben sitting next to an unconscious Integra. An oxygen mask rested over her mouth and nose and the diviness was hooked up to an IV and vitals monitor. The pulse reader beeped steadily, and Blake could hear the sound of oxygen being flown in through the mask. In a way the whole scene seemed bizarre, but it was no less real than the diviness herself.

"Rin!" Ben exclaimed as looked up from Integra. "What the hell is he doing out of bed? He's in no condition to be moving around right now!"

"He wouldn't settle down until he saw her," Rin sighed.

"She's alive." Blake sighed. Then concern covered his face. "What's wrong with her?"

"The shock of receiving a fatal blow and giving up all of her mana simultaneously was too much for her body to handle." Ben explained with a sigh. "She's in a coma of sorts. I don't know when she'll wake up or even if she'll wake up at all."

Blake grit his teeth. "This is all Vollu's doing! I swear I'm going to kill that bastard!" He felt his eyes starting to burn as a whirlwind of emotions tore through him. He had failed, and his master was a victim to that failure. "I need to find out where he is."

"Blake..." Rin began, but Ben walked up to his friend, looked him in the eyes, then slammed his fist into the diviner's midsection.

Blake's eyes bulged and he bent over in a fit of coughing.

"Ben!" Rin yelled in shock. "What the hell are you doing?!"

Ben ignored her and looked at Blake as the diviner brought his glaring eyes up to meet his friend's.

"As you can see, you're in no condition to fight anything, let alone Vollu," Ben pointed out. "Your recovery should be your first priority. Then after you're recovered, you need to get stronger. I may not be one to talk, but as you are right now, you're pathetic in comparison to Vollu. And I'm sure that he's too pissed off to want to toy with you, so I can only imagine your next fight will be much different. Not to mention your other issue."

"What issue?" Blake asked.

Blake watched as Rin shot the occultist a warning glare, but Ben simply continued.

"Putting it simply..." Ben paused and looked up to the sky. Blake's gut churned. He knew. He knew, but he didn't want it to be said out loud. Saying it out loud would make it true. Ben lowered his eyes back to Blake's and uttered the words that Blake so desperately didn't want to hear.

"You're not a diviner anymore."

The numbness took over Blake like a chemical agent. He had lost the one thing that would let him protect those he cared about.

"But he did this to Integra..." Blake whispered as he fell to his knees. Tears fell freely now. "He did this to her and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it, even with my powers," Blake pounded the ground in frustration. "I know I can't do anything right now, especially now that I've lost them. I just want him to pay."

"And he will," Rin said gently as she lifted his head and wrapped her arms around him. "We'll make him pay. All of us will get stronger, then we'll take him down together. You're not alone in this. It's ok to rely on others, you know. Especially your friends."

"She's right, man," Ben nodded. "We've got your back. We'll stomp that fuck into the ground and keep him there. He won't know what hit him. But I should probably elaborate a bit more as well."

Blake looked up and raised an eyebrow.

"Elaborate what?"

Later that night, Blake laid on his back and looked up at the stars. They all twinkled so brightly, like tiny flames catching fire on a deep blue blanket. The breeze was cool against his bandaged skin and the ground was solid under his back.

He could feel it. It was faint. But it was there. The thrum of mana flowing through him. White and black sparks fizzed at his finger-tips as he raised his hand in front of him, but any attempt in summoning his deck resulted in absolutely nothing happening.

As Ben had explained it, he had lost the diviner aspect of his powers, but not his magic circuits or his mana. He had basically been changed into a regular magus who had been severely drained of mana. Not to mention that many of his magic circuits had either been blocked or damaged.

He clenched his fist up in the sky. Simply another thing that Vollu had taken from him.

As he lie there, he heard the screen door open behind him. When he sat up to see who it was, he found two beautiful turquoise eyes looking back at him. The man stood and opened his arms in a welcoming motion, and the gem magus ran and hugged herself into him.

Blake smiled and wrapped her up in a tight embrace.

"I'm sorry I've been so distant today." He whispered to her. "I've just had a lot on my mind."

"I know," she whispered back, nuzzling into his chest. "But you have to remember that you and I are a team, and that if anything feels like it's too much, I can help you carry it."

That's right. He had Rin. He had Ben. When she woke up, he'd have Integra. He wasn't alone.

"I know," he responded. They stood there in their embrace for the longest time, then he smiled. "You know I love you, right?"

"I know," she smiled into his chest. "By the way."

"Hmm?" He hummed in question.

Rin pulled away slightly and smiled up at him, pushing herself up on her tiptoes and closing her eyes. "Welcome back to the Realm of Life, Blake Ryan."

Blake smiled back down at her. "There isn't anywhere else I'd want to be."

With that the man complied with the magus's wishes, sealing their lips together with a love he never thought he could have.

Yeah. He'd take on Vollu again. He'd take on the would if it meant keeping the people he loved safe. He'd get his power back. There was no doubt in his mind about that.
