"Ready, Olivia?" He asked, looking at her with his typical stoic face, but with the hint of a smile in his eyes.
"No. Yes. Yes." Olivia nodded a little timidly. "Where's my other best man?" She asked as she looked around the room.
"Here, mom."
"There you are. You look so handsome!" She smiled with tears in her eyes as she looked at her son in his grey suit. The fact that he looked like a mini version of Barba made her smile even wider.
"Mom?"
"Yeah, honey?" Olivia said as she got down to straighten his tie a little, mainly to keep her hands busy.
"After, when you and Amanda are married, do I have to call her mama, like Jesse and Billie?"
"You can call her whatever you want, Noah."
"Whatever I want?"
"Mhm. No, wai-"
"Even Stinky McPoopants?" He giggled.
"Tell you what, you can call her that when she forgets to clean Frannie's paws after their walks."
"Ok." Noah laughed.
"Ok." Olivia took a deep breath as she got up and looked at the door. "Let's do this."
With her son holding her hand on one side, and John Munch holding her arm on the other, Olivia started to move with slightly trembling legs towards the small crowd gathered outside.
As she looked around and met the eyes staring back at her, it hit her with full force just how close she had been to leave all of this behind. She looked into the eyes of people who had been there, in so many different capacities, through so many years.
Her eyes found Nick, and he smiled his warm smile at her. Silently telling her how happy he was to be there. She heard Dodds' wife tell him "she looks so beautiful" and she thought about how losing their son had brought them back together, and how grateful she was for his friendship. She looked at Alex who elbowed Brian and said "I did that" before pointing at her with a grin.
She wasn't lying.
With a lot of help from her friend, Olivia had found exactly what she was looking for. "I need a white jumpsuit that's fancy enough to get married in, but that also kinda makes me look like an Italian mob boss."
"I got you." The former ADA had said, and Alex was definitely a woman of her word.
She watched as Phoebe handed Kat a tissue. The young, normally tough detective was crying more than anyone at the moment, and Olivia made a mental note to tease her about it later.
"I'm really proud of you, Liv." Munch said before he let go of her arm and joined the rest of the crowd.
"Where's El?" She whispered when she got up to where her former captain, Donald Cragen, was standing.
"Oh, he has arrived." He grinned and pointed over her shoulder.
She gave him a confused look before she turned around, and immediately burst out laughing. Behind Jesse and Billie who looked like two princesses in their light peach colored dresses, Elliot was walking with a small flower basket, matching the ones the girls were carrying.
He smirked at her as he threw out a handful of flowers.
"So stupid." Olivia laughed again and shook her head at him. But, as ridiculous as the moment was, it wasn't lost on her how immensely grateful she was to have him there, to have him back, to call him a friend again. Tragedy had pulled them apart and tragedy had brought them back together, and this time she just instinctively knew that she wasn't going to lose him again.
He walked up to her, leaned in and kissed her gently on the cheek. She smiled when she heard his words whispered against her skin. "I'm so happy for you." Their eyes locked for a few seconds before he turned around and walked over to where his kids were standing.
"Look at mama." Jesse said then, immediately drawing Olivia's attention towards the impromptu aisle that lead to the deck outside the cabin.
"Yeah." The now completely stunned brunette breathed out. "Look at mama."
Amanda, arm in arm with Fin, was walking towards her and in the blink of an eye, the crowd in front of Olivia disappeared.
She had been right.
With her ivory lace dress, and her hair pulled back in a loose French braid, Amanda Rollins looked like heaven.
Her crystal blue eyes looked even bluer, her always bright smile looked even brighter.
"Breathe, Liv." Cragen whispered next to her.
"Ok." She whispered back, still in a complete trance by the woman now only a few feet away.
"Hi." She simply said when Amanda was standing in front of her.
The blonde let out a short laugh, sounding just a little nervous. "Hi."
"You look..." like heaven, but she couldn't finish the sentence because she was completely choked up.
Amanda leaned in and kissed her on the cheek before her low voice found its way to Olivia's ear. "When you said white suit... this was not what I had prepared myself for."
"Ok, before the brides ruin the wedding by kissing before their I do's-" Cragen said with the combination of a smile and his stern voice. "Let me begin by saying how incredibly proud and grateful I am to stand here today."
He eyed both of them for a short moment before he continued.
"It truly is a privilege to watch two people that have persisted through all the challenges life has to offer, stand here in front of me now, looking happier than I have ever seen them."
The two women shared a silent and wordless conversation then. It only lasted for a few seconds but between blue and brown eyes existed a story so deep, at times heart wrenching, and yet so sacred to both of them.
I love you.
I love you, too.
Always.
"I was going to talk about how you're both one of the best detectives I've ever had the pleasure to work with, to mentor and to yell at. But, there's so much more to you than the job. And I wish you both all the love and joy the world has to offer, because honestly, I can't think of anyone who deserves it more."
"So, Olivia Margaret Benson, do you take Amanda Rollins to be your wife, your equal and your partner in storms and calm weather, in failure and success, and in pain and love?"
"I do." She really wanted to yell the words out for everyone to hear, but was only able to produce a soft whisper.
"And do you, Aman-"
"I do." Amanda was beaming when she blurted out the words. "Just let me kiss her."
"Ok, then." Cragen laughed. "It is my greatest honor to pronounce you wife, and wife. You can kiss your bride now, Rollins."
"Good." Amanda cried as her smiling lips met Olivia's.
They didn't hear how the small crowd applauded and cheered around them.
In that moment they were alone, with all their stories, and all their spoken and unspoken words.
In your heart I see the star of every night and every day
In your eyes I get lost, I get washed away
Just as long as I'm here in your arms
I could be in no better place
"I love you." Olivia mumbled against Amanda's lips.
"I love you more."
"Not possible."
And then she kissed her again.
It had been Olivia's idea to have the wedding at the cabin. Amanda had eyed her a little skeptically, considering the latest events that had taken place there, but the former captain had made a strong case.
"It's where we became a couple, it's where we got engaged and yes, it's where something really awful happened, but I don't want to destroy such an important place because of one horrible night."
So, Amanda had agreed. Partly because it also gave them an excuse to have a small wedding, which was what the blonde wanted.
And as she watched Olivia dance with Billie in her arms on the deck, she couldn't have pictured a more beautiful place to marry the love of her life.
"Hi Mrs. Benson." Elliot said as he walked up to her and leaned against the railing.
"Funny. Did you come up with that all on your own?" Amanda said dryly as she bumped her shoulder into him.
"I've never seen her like this, Amanda. You did that."
"Nah, she did most of it on her own."
"Not without help."
Amanda swallowed the lump in her throat, moved by Elliot's words, and a little overwhelmed by the thought of everything they had been through together. Every battle they had fought to get to this day.
We made it, she thought. And this time there wasn't an ounce of doubt in her mind.
"Speaking of help." She said before clearing her throat. "Can you put those big arms of yours to good use?"
Amanda watched as Elliot disappeared inside the cabin and then her eyes fell back on Olivia.
My wife.
She wondered how long it would take to get used to that word.
"I need you to stay here until I tell you it's ok to go inside, preferably with your back turned to the door." Amanda said before placing a quick kiss on Olivia's lips.
"Wh- What if I have to pee?"
"Pee outside. Be creative." The blonde winked, echoing Olivia's words from their Christmas morning eight months ago.
"Regretting that jumpsuit now, Liv?" Casey chuckled as they watched Amanda walk away.
Ten minutes later, Barba clinked a knife against his glass, catching the attention of everyone on the deck.
"If everyone can follow me into the living room, one of the brides has a little… surprise." He looked at Olivia and grinned before turning around to walk inside.
"Hi wife." Amanda said when Olivia was seated in front of her with Jesse on her lap. "I'm no public speaker, so I thought that I would sum up how I feel in a more… visual way. And so, with a little help from my partners in crime, our squad, I scrambled together this little thing. Now, if anyone asks, none of you ever saw this. Remember, I know where all of y'all live. Ok. Enjoy. Oh, and Liv… I love you."
As the blonde sat down next to her and grabbed her hand, so many memories, even memories she had forgotten about, before they even became a couple, filled the screen as music filled the room.
Video of her in the squad room talking to Amanda's belly when she was pregnant with Jesse. And then a very different video of them sitting at a bar looking far from sober, with the blonde lifting up her shirt to prove that she had in fact once had a belly button ring.
Olivia turned and glared jokingly at Fin then, knowing that he was behind that last one.
Pictures from the day she adopted Noah. And another picture, taken just weeks before the wedding, of them kissing Noah on the cheeks after a dance recital.
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true, I was made for you
She wiped away tears as she watched the video of her wrestling with Noah and Jesse on the floor in her old living room. Amanda dancing with Frannie and Billie. A selfie taken in front of Pantheon in Rome. Her posing with her favorite RBG t-shirt. Amanda with sunglasses on, sitting cross-legged on top of the table in the interrogation room.
I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby, I broke them all for you
Oh, because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do, and I was made for you
Laughing while holding Billie over her head in Central Park. Her arm over Amanda's shoulder at the Women's March. Sitting soaking wet inside the shower with a very dirty looking Frannie next to her.
Her sleeping with a book over her face on a sunbed in Rome. The kids playing in the snow outside the cabin. A video of Amanda tackling her to the ground during a training many years ago, ending with Olivia flipping them over and pinning the blonde to the floor while laughing.
Looking at it now it was ridiculous how long it had taken them to finally get together.
You see the smile that's on my mouth
It's hiding the words that don't come out
And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess
No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what I've been through like you do
And I was made for you
A picture taken by Carisi in the squad room where she and Amanda were standing next to each other seemingly looking concentrated on something in front of them. Suddenly a cropped version followed and it was zoomed in on their hands, their pinkies touching where their hands rested on the table.
"Busted!" Carisi yelled out as the crowd laughed. Olivia felt herself blush as she shook her head and covered her face momentarily.
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
Oh, but these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true, I was made for you
And lastly, Olivia with the kids and Frannie outside on the deck, covered in mud. So happy.
"Good job at ruining my makeup, Amanda." Olivia sniffled as Jesse jumped down from her lap when the video ended.
"So you liked it, huh?"
"I loved it." The brunette placed her hand at the back of Amanda's neck and pulled her in for a kiss, immediately rewarded by a collective "aww" from the people around them. It was effectively cut off by a certain detective flipping them off behind Olivia's back as she deepened the kiss just a little.
A few hours later, when most of the party had moved inside, Olivia managed to sneak out on the deck for some much needed air. She took a deep breath as she closed her eyes and leaned back in the porch swing.
Her heart was racing, not from anxiety or stress, but simply from being just a little overcome with joy.
As she listened to the music from inside, knowing without looking that everyone that mattered to her were safe and happy, she sent a silent message of gratitude to her mother for bringing her into this world.
I know you tried. And look at me now.
"There you are, been trying to find you for like thirty minutes."
She was pulled from her thoughts when Fin sat down next to her.
"Just needed a little breather."
"You good?"
"Yeah, Fin, I'm good." She smiled.
"You know... I know you did the right thing by leaving, and I support you and all, but I really do miss you, Liv."
"Thank you for saying that."
"So you're really not coming back, huh?"
They'd had this conversation several times now, and Fin had surprised her a little by being the one who struggled the most with her decision to leave. She had explained in many different ways how it had been her time, she wanted a life outside her office, and so on. But, as soon as he had the chance, he would directly or indirectly tell her that he wished she was coming back.
He needs to know.
"I almost ate my own gun, Fin."
She hadn't meant to blurt it out like that. After five months, Amanda, Elliot and Dr. Hill were still the only ones that knew the details about that night.
She watched as Fin's eyes widened with disbelief, and something else. Grief?
"Sorry, I didn't mean to-" Olivia started, wanting to apologize for her sudden and brutal admission.
"When?"
"Five months ago."
"Right before you left."
"Mhm."
"Jesus, Liv. I didn't know."
"Of course you didn't. And look, one day I'll tell you what happened, but for now, just know that I'm happy. And I haven't regretted leaving for a single minute."
"I believe you."
"Good. Now, it's still my wedding day, and I want to dance with my new wife. You should go dance with yours."
"I don't really dance, Liv."
"That's an order, Fin. My last one." She gave his hand a quick squeeze before she got up and walked inside to join Amanda on the dance floor.
Five hours and a lot of speeches and dances later, Olivia closed the door to the bedroom and stared at Amanda who was currently leaning against the dresser with a half full glass of champagne in her hand.
"Remind me to give Lucy and Sienna a raise." The brunette said as she walked towards her wife. The nannies along with most of the wedding party was renting a larger cabin close by and had offered to take the kids for the night so the newlyweds could sleep in.
It also meant that there was no need for pillows or hands covering mouths.
"Liv, it's been a long day, we don't have to-" Amanda started but she was abruptly interrupted by Olivia's lips on her, and then teeth gently biting down on her lip.
"Are you kidding me? After watching you in that dress all day?"
"Ok, then." Amanda grinned before leaning back in.
Without breaking the kiss, she reached behind Olivia's back and fumbled around for a couple of seconds before she finally found the top of the zipper. The brunette hummed against her as the zipper was pulled down slowly.
When her suit eventually fell to the floor, Amanda took a step back and stared at her for a moment.
"I can't believe my wife is so hot."
A slight blush spread across the brunette's cheeks. "Speaking of hot. Turn around."
"You know... Shouldn't they make wedding dresses with velcro? Five hundred and thirty two buttons really gets in the way of passionate love making." Olivia said followed by a little scoff as she started to work her way down from Amanda's neck.
"That's why I added the surprise, to make it worth your while."
"What surpri- oh."
Amanda wasn't exactly a lingerie kind of woman. She usually opted for the most practical and comfortable. And in Olivia's opinion she didn't need it. The blonde simply looked good in everything.
But as the white corset came into view, the brunette had to admit that it might've been the sexiest thing she had ever seen.
"Shit..."
"Sounds like you approve?"
"Mhm." Olivia nodded slowly as she undid the last buttons.
"Wait." Amanda said then before she carefully pulled off and stepped out of the dress, picked it up along with Olivia's discarded jumpsuit and placed them over a chair.
"Is this married life? You picking up clothes from the floor?"
"Nah, just the clothes that cost more than two grand."
"I can live with that." Olivia said as she sat down on the edge of the bed. "Come here."
The blonde had a mischievous look on her face as she straddled her.
"You're so beautiful." Olivia whispered.
"I don't need the sweet talk, Liv. I'm almost naked already."
"No, I'm serious. I don't tell you that nearly enough. How I have been in love with your eyes since the day we met. How I could touch your hair for hours and never get tired of it... I love everything about you."
Amanda smiled a little shyly while shifting to get a bit more comfortable in Olivia's lap.
"Speaking of hair." She said. "This needs to come out." She reached behind the brunette's head, pulled at the hair tie and the few bobby pins that was holding the chocolate colored strands in place.
"There she is." Amanda smiled as she dragged her fingers through the long and wavy hair that now fell down Olivia's back and around her face. "So pretty."
She was pulled in for another kiss and this time they didn't stop.
Without dragging her lips away, Amanda expertly unhooked Olivia's bra and pulled it off her. And when her palm closed over her breast, the brunette whimpered against her.
As she slowly started to rock her hips, she grabbed Olivia's hand and placed it on her lower belly, right between the hem of the corset and the top of her matching thong. "Touch me."
She gasped when Olivia's hand finally moved down to between her legs and put just the perfect amount of pressure over the skimpy fabric that covered her.
"Wait... wait." The brunette whispered.
"Wh-"
"I need you naked."
"Wait… Who put this on you?" Olivia asked as she started to undo the corset.
"Phoebe, and Kat."
"I don't know how to feel about that." The brunette said jokingly.
"Well, I haven't been able to breathe for almost twenty-four hours, so just appreciate the effort that went into this."
"Oh, I'm definitely appreciating it."
Sex with Amanda had always somehow had some deeper meaning to it than any intimate relationship she had ever been in. There was just something about the way Amanda could read her body like no one had done before. And something about the way the blonde responded to her touch, either gentle and careful, or firm and sometimes just the right amount of painful.
Olivia loved how with a simple word, a flick of the tongue or a stroke with her fingers, she could make the other woman tremble, and she knew that she would never get tired of hearing Amanda's strangled and breathless moans and curses when she pushed her closer and closer to her climax.
Just like their first time in that same bed all those long months ago, Olivia whispered "I love you" against the blonde's temple when she cried out and clenched around her fingers. Except this time, Amanda wasn't scared to say it back. She wasn't terrified that this could end any second, that it would be ripped away from her because she didn't deserve it.
This time, Amanda repeated the words out loud, over and over again.
A/N: WHEW.
