Epilogue
Realm of Life: 2046
Rain thumped and lightning cracked over the bustling city of Taros, the capital of the world. It was getting dark and people were getting weary as they attempted to make it home before the Grand Overlord's curfew. The ruler's guard enforced the curfew brutally and not a single straggler would be forgiven if they were found out past it. It was a prospering city. Larger than any before it, but the law was strict and rigid. The Grand Overlord was not known for his forgiveness.
In the once city of London, crime was almost non-existent, and those who broke even the smallest of laws were punished severely. The Grand Enforcers ensured this simple rule in the name of their liege.
Not many had come face to face with their ruler and many hoped that they never did. Yet, for those who had, they could all say the same thing. He didn't care for life. He didn't care for much at all, in fact. Whenever a citizen of the city came face to face with him, he carried a vacant and disinterested face, as if he was bored of the world he had come to rule. Like a god dissatisfied with his own creation.
Nearly twenty five years ago he had made himself known in a most unsettling way. He'd appear on battlefields and in the bases of hostile commanders, silencing the conflict with what no one else could describe as anything but magic. Within a year, violence between nations had been completely wiped away in fear of being decimated, and nothing was left for the human race to do but to swear fealty to their one true lord.
The world fell into a state of fearful peace and had been that way for the past couple of decades. No one could stand up to him. Many tried, and all failed miserably. Each would-be usurper's allies, friend, and family were mercilessly killed, leaving a dark example to those who would dare cross him.
"I don't understand why everyone is so afraid of him!" a young teen with dark hair sighed to his girlfriend as he walked her home. "All he ever does is sit up in that tower and look down on us all."
And it was true. The Grand Overlord stayed in his tower for the most part, sitting on his throne, absently looking over the world he had built.
The Tower had once been the grandest institute in the world for mages, and the headquarters of the now extinguished Mage's Association. Once hailed as the clock tower, the tower now held a new name: The Pillar of the Divine.
"Quiet, Tommy!" the boy's girlfriend scolded, looking around fearfully. "What if the Grand Enforcers overheard you!"
The teen, known as Tommy, snorted in ignorance. "So what? What are they going to do to me? Kill me for having an opinion? That wouldn't really build faith in our gracious Overlord." The boy rolled his eyes. "All I'm saying is, if his majesty has an issue with something, why doesn't he come face me like a man?" He had sneered out the title, his majesty, as if it were poison.
"Tommy, please don't say such things," the girl pleaded. "The words you're speaking are treasonous. You'll be killed if you're caught talking like that."
"What are you getting all worked up about, Sammie?" Tommy huffed. "I bet everything we've heard about him is either a lie, or vastly exaggerated. I doubt he's even slightly magical. I've never even seen his royal highness grace the city with his presence."
"Well he's very busy..." Sammie countered meekly. "He does have a whole world to run..."
"Then how does he run it from that little hidy-hole in that tower of his?" Tommy argued irritably. "He's just a coward who probably can't even fight."
The two heard footsteps behind them and they both turned jumpily to find no one there.
"Damn it, Sammie!" Tommy sighed. "You're getting me on edge. Let's just get you home."
The two went on in silence and delivered Sammie safely to her house. The couple kissed goodnight and Tommy turned to leave.
"You need to get home quickly," Sammie urged when Tommy lingered. "It's almost curfew."
With that, the girl closed her door.
"Screw the overlord's curfew," Tommy muttered to himself.
The boy was halfway home when the bell tolled midnight. The curfew time in Taros.
Tommy's face paled a shade. But then he shrugged and kept his lazy pace towards home. Screw the Overlord. He wasn't going to kill Tommy over a damned curfew.
The teen was a few blocks away from his house when he heard the footsteps again.
He spun around to find himself face to face with three Grand Enforcers.
They all wore black hooded robes with white sashes and bore the mark of infinity on their left lapel.
Tommy's stomach churned. "Look, I know it's past curfew. I was just walking my girl home. I live only down the street. Cut me some slack."
"You know the rules, kid," the middle enforcer sighed in fake resignation. "Curfew is at midnight. It's past that time."
"I get that," Tommy argued. "But what's a guy like me gonna be doing past curfew? It's not like I'm planning to overthrow your overlord. Just let me be. It won't happen again."
"Oh, you're right about that one," the left enforcer snickered. "And as for the overthrowing part, that's not what it sounded like earlier. You sounded very confident in your ability to take down his majesty."
Tommy paled. The footsteps earlier... They had been following him.
"Not only do you speak treason, but your actions show you have very little respect for the Grand Overlord," the right enforcer chimed in. "Examples must be made of traitorous dogs like yourself."
The trio moved in.
"Come on guys!" Tommy argued, panicked. "I was just talking myself up to my girl. I didn't mean it!"
The trio continued to move in.
"Guys!" Tommy was in full panic now, but they didn't stop. "Guys! Come on! You don't have to do this! Please!"
The teen's screams could be heard throughout the silent city, but no one came to save him.
——
"What have you found?" The Grand Overlord asked, boredly.
"Your heir seems to have passed through a time breach," a particularly weaselly enforcer replied.
"Ah," The overlord chuckled humorlessly. "I knew he would do something like this eventually. Where did he end up?"
"The year 1920, my liege," the enforcer responded. "It appears he overshot his true destination."
"So it seems," the ruler sighed. "Make preparations to utilize that breach. But engineer it so that I may end up in the year 2020."
"You intend to go there yourself?" The enforcer blanched. "We could send some of our men to eliminate him for you, sir. There's no need to dirty your hands with something like this."
"By that time, he will have become too powerful," the overlord said dismissively.
"Then why not have us jump to an earlier time and eliminate him?" The enforcer inquired.
"I want to see if what I believe is true," the ruler explained in an annoyed fashion. "And if it is, I want to crush his hopes at the brink of their fruitfulness. No one defies me. Not even one who was gifted with my blood at birth."
"I see, my liege," the enforcer gulped. He didn't desire to push the matter more. He knew that was a good way to end up as ash. "I shall make the preparations."
"You'd better hurry, captain," the Overlord warned. "My patience is wearing thin with this matter. Do not disappoint me."
"Yes, my liege," the captain gulped. "I shall get right on it."
The Grand Overlord did not grace that answer with any further comment, only a wave of dismissal.
When the enforcer had left the room, the Overlord smiled a fraction.
"You are a bold one, Vollu," the man chuckled slightly. "I'm glad you could finally bring something worthwhile to the table."
With that, Blake Ryan continued to look over his utopia.
"I'll see you soon, my son."
A/N: I'll just drop this here. Buh-buh-bye! And again, have a great day.
