Naru's pov xD btw, rolling back time... you might want to re -read the previous chapters, didn't add much to allow the story to progress.
"Kyyyaaah!"
"!"
The sudden scream from Mai and the energy that slammed all the objects on the room towards the wall had Naru grimacing. He hadn't lost control, that was Mai's input, to be able to influence the bond in such a way, could only mean it was near completion...
Naru tried his best to remain with a positive mind but all his thoughts leaned towards the negative perspective...
'How bothersome'
if it wasn't for the fact that the bond was pulsating very intensively and that her scream sounded like a person who had been murdered, Naru wouldn't had easily set his thoughts aside. He picked up a tea bag, and began preparing it, just like how Gene used to do. He had always found his twin method the best to regain his focus on reality, after all psychometry took all his senses away.
Lin waited silently at his side, he wasn't willing to risk him being alone no matter what.
after a while Naru took the cup with great care and left the room, Lin never said anything and silently followed after him.
...
Bou-san's voice could be heard asking Mai something but it shut up instantly when both of them arrived.
Naru knew that when waking up, the hardest thing to do was to answer the questions but they were necessary, and more if they could obtain valuable information.
"..."
He noticed right away that her eyes look dead... she most likely died in that dream... No, she definitely did.
"Are you alright?"
he felt the bond shake as she raised her now trembling eyes to meet his.
"I'm sorry everyone. Thanks" her voice sounded broken.
Everyone's eyes, including his, widened as her hand glowed.
"I'm okay"
A sincere smile bloomed on her face.
The bond flickered, he couldn't help himself, he grabbed her hand. A part of her had wilted and died, right before his eyes.
"don't do that. Don't use manipulation to control yourself-" Anger, frustration, irritation and relief swarm through him. He was relieved that the burden on the bond had lessen but he was disgusted at the price of it.
"- I was killed in the dream"
'ah, that's right... I'm a hypocrite, if I could manipulate my feelings after each psychometric reading of this level I will do so without even thinking about it'
Her explanation didn't take long... but there was something that caught him off guard..
'...His memory I shared it all...'
'memory? even before the incident?'
"you... how much power you have? he whispered causing everyone to gulp but she wasn't aware of it
"the cold, the sticky red blood, the awful smell, the pain... I"
her eyes unfocused, as if... she was reliving it...
"enough"
the strength on his command shut her off, her eyes instantly focused on him.
"...Naru"
'That's right... I can use my appearance for this'
"that's enough, look at me, don't think about it anymore" a small electric current shot through his fingers...
'it happened again, why am I giving her energy without intending to?'
Her face turned red and that though on Naru's head, didn't stay long enough for him dwell on it, her expression was interesting enough to take his attention.
with trembling lips she mumbled "weapons"
Unknown to himself a smirk played on his face. A glare was presented to him and she instantly fled to the miko's arms.
"Dirty trick" Masako whispered which brought annoyance to his fun time..
However when he suggested to have a sesame, Mai was the first to oppose, she even gave a solution to his insistent desire of information. To take down the walls...
'not bad...' he said so even out loud 'but it will take time and effort'.
"even so, Don't let Masako get possessed!"
Now that was annoying, the bond had warmed up, 'we aren't playing around, we need this, as professionals on this field we should be prepared any second-'
he said it differently for her to understand but the thought was interrupted by Mai.
"I know! I trust her abilities more than anyone here, that's why" Mai began but she cut herself off.
'-oh please, don´t play that trick, it ain't original' Naru narrowed his eyes. His life on this field had given him more than one debate, where the opposite person used the 'become the victim on a conversation' card to try to win...
*Fuhhh* her long hair... it fell cleanly to her sides
"..."
Naru froze 'that's right, she doesn't play tricks... she argues upfront' was all his mind could come up with...
Lin ran to her, and from Naru's current position, he could see a thin scar on Mai's neck.
Mai resumed talking, not caring about the blood slipping from her lips...
"The spirits here... they don't want to tell the story, they want others to live it"
'ah.. I nearly killed the medium' a bitter feeling formed on his throat...
Naru began to despise his desire of information as he watched the Miko assisting Lin, on drugging Mai off. Her petite form crumbled towards her bed, but even so she fought to stay awake
"Don't let her do it..."
"I understand" he felt his body stiffen up, he didn't had an option now, he had to use Lin's method
when he inquired to his assistant about it, he received affirmation but Mai still opposed it..
Lin told her, he wouldn't get possessed, but even that way she protested to sleep.
"No... sleep, I don't... want to..I"
The miko gave her a comforting sentence but Mai answered with an unexpected reply
"He is moving"
"!"
...
'annoying... We haven't accomplished what we came to do, and you want me to retire? perish the thought, that is foolish'
Not long after Mai fell asleep, Lin and Naru's discussion began. After a while, Naru was impressed by the male student acting as him, he had proposed to leave with a reasonable excuse
'he can be used... I got my hands on someone that knows how to be of use' a smirk tried to settle on his lips, but he hid it from Lin...
He nodded without opposition to Yasuhara's statement.

Naru watched Mai slightly, prior inquiring if Lin's preparation were done.
she looked like a ghost, like a leaf ready to be blown by the wind, but he couldn't sent her away, not with the state she turned in whenever Vurado moved...she was a danger magnet but also a radar...
"then let's begin"
*whistle*
Mai swayed but Naru didn't comment on that, rather his attention was on the failed summoned spirit.
"we got the date of death wrong"
*tsk*
'if you had't blocked my attempt to read Atsugi-san's objects that wouldn't had happened'
"Let's work with what we have"
He turned to see the monk steadying Mai.
"-Can you also see Lin's blobs?"
'huh? is the block from Gene wearing off?'
"Blobs? what blobs? confusion was heard on the monk's voice
"the colored blobs around him" she pointed at Astugi-san's spirit...
'colored? did she surpassed the block? at this rate she might be able to see their true forms, I will have to investigate this later with Lin-'
"Naru, finish this quickly, he is not alone" her voice brought him back
'-great, just great.. the monk will eat her if she continues to act that way... just look at his pleased face. Seriously that girl is clueless, ugh what an idiot. Well, whatever let's finish this first'

*swoosh*
"Vlad, he was screaming Vlad"
'She could hear him... seriously, I will certainly teach her English... While I'm at it, might as well drill some sense into her brain' annoyance bubbled up on him 'she better be glad that it was Gene who first said Vurado'

after explaining to Mai who Vlad was, John instantly commented out loud "Then both the spirits of the victims and Vurado and company continue to haunt this mansion
'it's Vlad but yes' "ye-"
lights turned off cutting Naru's words. 'so typical, we were on the open discussing this, they were bound to respond in a cliche manner'
Masako screamed slightly
'and you call yourself a professional? oh that's right... not all of them are'
"everyone, stay calm don't move!" He instructed instantly
"ah, no stop, don't! ugh" Mai cried... Within him, Naru felt the bond pull intensively then it suddenly turned cold the moment her voice faded.
'no, it's the same sensation, the same that happened with Gene!' his heart was pierced with the memory
"Mai!" Naru roared, he sent energy towards the bond, if the bond could become active, the other end could still fight through..
all noise ceased and when the light returned he was frozen by her state
'keep a clear mind, breathe, don't act upon this' his powerful energy was literally being suppressed by his reasoning...
Naru turned his sight towards the wall, a mix of emotions took the best of him to control as he read the bloody words
...
'A group of people had opened up a wall just because it didn't had blood marks on it, they even discovered corpses and that fake Davis confessed just by this? don't make me laugh. Suddenly running away with their tails in between their legs won't saved them, I will make them pay later'
Naru was extremely annoyed at the fake imitator but controlled himself...
He swiftly informed his mentor, hiding the dissatisfaction he felt for not completing the case as well... But he rather not risk his team to face anything else... mostly Mai.
"Ojou-chan?"
she was in a daze like state, Naru stopped the monk from touching her and instead, he tried to search for a way to get her out of it for good.
Naru inquired to Mai what she usually answered but this time her replies were vague, it was a variable.
He raised his hand to Mai and she followed it with her gaze, then she grabbed it, making him come closer to her... It was the first time he saw this, so he tried to inquire to Lin... regardless a small uncomfortable feeling brought his eyes back to her..
she was biting his finger, the left hand ring finger to be exact
'what? what on Earth is she doing...'
an electric current left him towards her mouth
'face... that face, no, slow your breathing keep calm' his heart pounded as she pulled his hand closer and bit his forearm
'wait, she is 16? 17? She shouldn't be doing this... or making that face- no... never mind erase that thought' her blush like face was alluring to him, he felt something alike denial and desire mix within him. He lost strength and fell on the floor.
Mai kept getting closer to him, her hand grasped her shirt and a few buttons opened up from her front...
'ah...'
"Lin, Lin" Madoka's voice brought reason to him, they weren't alone like before...
he glared hard but it didn't last long. Mai bit his neck...
"!"
*snap*
'ugh that hurts, just what-'
The bond was pulsating... something, something was-
He pushed Mai from his neck, if this continued, he wouldn't be able to control himself...
"Naru" Mai's voice pleaded to him as she dangerously closed in to his face...
'idiot, think things through, I-' he swallowed hard to that thought... 'if it was her, he wouldn't mind, he didn't find her repulsive-'
*pop*
Suddenly the pain he felt on his head vanished like it was air.. now everything felt right, like he solved an incredible hard puzzle... a few objects began to levitate
'soft' so far the lips felt that way... he didn't close his eyes, instead he welcomed the approach head on.
'I, I'm no different than -' He didn't finish the thought of including himself on the male population... things had turned an unexpected way...
instead of what everyone expected including him, Mai bit his chin instead of his lips... the objects fell off, as reality rushed through him
"The lips! it's the lips baka!" the Miko screamed at her
'an idiot is an idiot till someone teach-' Naru met Lin's eyes '... sh**' he stood up...
"hope up? what-" he could feel Mai's gaze on him as she asked, but he couldn't look at her so he avoided her eyes and retreated to the bathroom
'unlike last time, at least I didn't get an er-'
the though was interrupted, he wasn't on the bathroom... everything was dark, like a black void and no later he felt himself being dragged... he couldn't move.
'f**k'
a few minutes and he began to smell something awful like dried blood...
he prepared himself, the bond had finally formed, he could make time. Lin wouldn't abandon him, he hadn't found his brother's body yet and more importantly. Her petite assistant wouldn't sit still...
'She is too wild'
A tile like room with a surgical bed and a blood filled bathtub appeared before his eyes. The hands dragging him released him. No later than 2 minutes, something tried to undress Naru.
'like I would let you keep touching me'
*pang* the entire structure rumbled
*shush*
the thing that was touching him disappeared into dust...
'I didn't use much, but it was stronger than before' He made an observation in the mid of exhaustion
The air he was breathing was disgusting. His sight kept going back and forth as he breathed, his focus was hard to maintain and he couldn't move, he was exhausted...
...
Naru had lost consciousness. Now he was tied to the bed, a silver like glitter light showed on the rusty knife floating on the side of the bed...
'ah, this is it?'
*tuuush*
"!"
the knife blew into pieces right at his side.
With great effort, Naru focused on Lin's shiki, he hadn't heard the whistle so he knew, what had happened
"Mai?" he turned from left to right but he could only see the blob, never less he was soon unbound from the bed.
he called her again, trying his best to reach through the bond, thou it proved difficult, the bond was too hot to allow any sort of trial and error communication...
the blob landed on top of Mai, it became invisible but as a result Mai turned visible.
'right on the mark, she's wild'
he staggered as he felt relief flowing through him, just then Mai tried to help him but she passed through, his body slightly felt better. He leaned against the wall and sat down. He was tired...
she silenced him when he tried to speak and signaled him to see, if he could hear her. He denied it.
her feet had began to disappear...
'she is at her limit'
she took out her key and held it for him to take it.
he grabbed it and felt it materialize in his hands, his eyes widened
"that's my charm, I will definitely come for it. Don't you dare loose it"
he turned to look at her but she was gone... unsure as to why he managed to hear her, he held the key inside his fist and leaned his forehead on his knees.
"idiot"
'a charm is made of paper' but he was fine with her charm regardless of the efficiency.
...
*splash*
Naru had entered a meditating state, it allowed him to keep consciousness... Lin had taught it to him for emergencies like this.
More than once, Naru had felt Mai pulling up energy from him through the bond so he knew, she was close by... He opened his eyes and saw the image of an old man covered in blood, his craze like eyes were the creepiest. Naru had never seen an entity like this but he didn't show any fear, as long as he could see him, he could fight back.
*slam*
a blighting light took his vision off for a second but he managed to recover just in time to watch Mai hit Vurado's head with the iron bucket.
*PANG*
'-I will try not to get her that mad with me'
she threw the flash light to the floor then used her fist to hit Vurado's stomach...
'ah, that might leave a curse on her fist'
"all the people you killed, were scared to die too b*tch"
'so she came for revenge?'Naru raised an eyebrow, he was surprised to find himself sane enough to create a monologue while watching Mai go wild...
with a swing she made a comeback with the flattened iron bucket and made Vurado fall back to the tub.
'mmm 7 out of 10... minus points for touching that thing directly' his professor side show up as he gave her a score
*pants pants*
"you better... give me... a bonus... Naru " Mai staggered
'what did I expect? I'm not the handsome man in distress am I?'
he blinked lazily, as he stopped his monologue...
"truly an idiot"
he made fun of her but in reality he was glad to see her again...
"what did you say?"
His tired mind didn't register that, this wasn't the best place to teased her... Mai grabbed the neck of his shirt, but the menacing aura she gave to him felt welcomed to him, the bond felt complete.
"taking revenge on a demon like entity wasn't part of your job" He stood up while smirking.
"nor was saving my boss butt" she mumbled
"care to repeat that once again to my face?"
He could see her face turn red but since the flashlight light was a bit low it was a bit hard to notice...
"I said-"
She instantly pushed him out without finishing her statement. Naru quickly turned around to see how Mai received a blow to her stomach from an invisible entity
'oh'
Mai smiled without her knowledge, a proud full smile bloomed on her face
Naru blinked, he called out to her name to confirm what had happened but he got pushed again.
'what-'
Naru could see how Mai's arm was pulled to her back, as she was made to kneel
*pop*
'!'
in a matter of seconds, her shoulder was dislocated. Naru's eyes widened
'who... dare... do..'
the bond stretched, it grew in width as big as it could, it burned... The gears on Naru's mind clicked when he realized she was protecting him from harm...
His reason was off, he had done his best to remain calm but he could careless about control now. Blue like electricity surrounded him, his eyes landed on her face, a sad smile was presented to him as she raised her voice. He felt a strong pull on the stretched bond...
"Regain your senses"
*struuush* he felt the bond twist and suddenly all the energy he was mustering up was turned back at him... he staggered
'i'm an idiot, I almost killed everyone'
*screech* *screeeech*
the scream caused Naru to knelt, he had a headache already, this was the worst to him.
He slightly heard Mai chant but the pain didn't allow him to open his eyes until the screams stopped.
Naru opened his eyes and saw the terror on her eyes, impulsively he pushed her behind him, the sound of her shirt tearing off and her scream made him livid against Vurado... But the bond twisted again which made him keep his control a second longer...
*whistle*
'I better give them all, a bonus' Naru thought while grabbing Mai's uninjured hand and pulling her out of the room.

...
"Mai just what the hell did you do? look at your hands, and your arm? how the hell did that happen? you beat the crap out of Vurado or what? the Miko roared
"it was more than a beating, more like a massac-" the image was still vivid on Naru's mind as he replied to the miko's question
Mai cut him off before he could finish his sentence...
"shut it Naru, they don't need to know"
it didn't take long for the facepalming to begin and Naru found it quite satisfying but regretted that they couldn't vote for her being an idiot due to his mentor intervention...
*pop*
the bond twisted again, for the third time as he felt his blood boil.. his nails dug deep into the palm of his hands, she gave him a look of comprehension but instead of comforting words, she asked for him to give her key back..
Naru felt the bond stretch, but didn't pay any attention, it was probably trying to untangle itself out off the multiple twists, just like when Gene and him shared a bond...
but he forgot, a day hasn't even passed since the bond had formed...
as soon as the key fell onto Mai's hands a small electric current went to Mai. It made the bond untangle so fast that it snapped, it had never cooled, it was similar to a rope on top of a fire, the flame was bound to cut it
*puff*
Blood dipped from Mai's mouth, she fell on top of him with no further movements
"Mai-"
'ah how didn't I see this coming?" this was Naru's last though as he lost consciousness when blood dripped from his mouth
the screams were high in volume but it didn't stop him from collapsing

...
'ugh' he blinked and searched for his assistant. His throat felt very dry...
"how long have I been out?" Naru asked as he woke up on the usual hotel room, his hands still showed the remaining signs of Lin's medical administration
"2 days" Lin said and flashed a light to his eyes
"what about Mai?" he asked while drinking the water Lin gave him
"she remains unconscious, she is under Matsuzaki-san's care"
Naru frowned...
"...the case?"
Lin gave him a press article and summarized it "the bodies found weren't made public, in the end the mansion was burned down and the news showed it as an accident"
after a while, Naru sighed and set the paper down.
"how is the bond?" his assistant inquired
"..cut off"
"I see... Well, isn't this what you wanted?" The stoic assistance simply looked straight to his charge eyes
"..."
"Noll?" Lin asked as he saw him standing up
"take me to Mai"
"if we do that, the bond might connect back"
"... you know very well that if we don't reconnect, any of us can suffer mayor consequences" Naru didn't turn to face him.
"is that really the case?" Lin smirked as he noticed Naru wasn't completely honest with his feelings
Naru glared at him but Lin kept smirking
"I understand, I won't say anything" the assistant finally gave up as Naru narrowed his eyes
Without any word, The black haired teen took off to take a bath...
...
Big shadows were under the miko's eyes, but Naru didn't comment on it. Madoka was next to Mai.
His mentor was the key point in relaying Mai's current condition to Lin... This way they didn't need to reveal Naru's and Lin's current address...
"any change?" Lin asked as he took Mai's pulse.
"she stopped breathing a few times but it was because her body lighten up to heal herself, it has happened around 2 times after our last call"
Lin narrowed his eyes...
"that's when Naru woke up"
all adults turned to look at Naru. The teen was really pale and had a slight sour expression thanks to the report.
he sighed and ordered them to leave without any room for opposition. To his surprise they left without fighting back...
"..."
Naru stood next to Mai, he had a vague idea on how to bond back but he wasn't entirely sure of it...
he raised his hand and brushed a finger on her lips, he tried to send the small current he always used but nothing came out... he frowned
Mai slowly opened her eyes... she regain consciousness thanks to his presence...
She whispered for water, to which Naru quickly opened the bottle next to her bed and added a straw...
Mai greedily drank half of it...
her eyes began to close...
"Mai..."
She smiled to his voice and did her best to focus on him
"what..?" she couldn't feel the bond so her reply was a bit delayed..
"the bond broke" Naru stated
"...oh"
her eyes widened a bit... She ate the fruits Naru pushed her way, they were next to her bed previously, on the night stand.
"I want to re-bond"
"...eh? why?"she blinked, surprise was written on her face, she nearly choked on a watermelon piece.
"there are a few instances recorded that when bonded psychics have their bonds broken, one if not both, are greatly affected... for instance one of them may no longer be able to use their abilities"
"well I'm fine-" Naru pushed another fruit her way, interrupting her sentence.
"another instance could be that both psychics may go out of control"
"Let's bond back" she was wide awake now and with great effort slowly sat down.
Naru smirked, he took her hands on his and sat beside her on the bed... Mai looked at him with slightly pink cheeks but she was serious on keeping herself under control... she didn't want that accident to happen again...
"you're the one that can manipulate the bond, you're also a medium thanks to Gene, close your eyes and let your instincts guide you"
Mai nodded and closed her eyes...
if he wasn't sure how to do it, Naru knew Mai could do it. He watched her silently...
He felt his own eyes close, a second later their foreheads touched...
".."
His mind went blank, there was no repulsing feeling. No dislike... Naru felt the warm of her breath brush his lips...
He leaned slightly to his right...
something soft landed on his lips... no more like it brushed his lips...
"!"
Instantly both teens open their eyes wide...
Mai's face turned bright red.
She tried to distance herself and just when their foreheads separated, a much bigger electric current than usual flew to the other.
"ugh!"
Both teens cried as they held their head.
Halooo yes, that was a kiss, well a chaste kiss or what we call *peck* and right after we have a wall-e and eve scene... tbh I wanted to make it spicy but there's an upcoming case and that would be in the way *grumbles*
btw the bond feels different to Naru than to what Mai feels, keep it in mind, Mai feels things as cold or hot in degree of temperature while Naru feels it like a substance/matter that can bend, tangle or have temperature
also if you're wondering why Naru could see Vurado and Mai didn't at first it was thanks to Lin's blob... it had landed on Mai and made her visible remember? well in summary it turned everything temporarily visible to Naru and not to Mai... hehehehe, major role for Lin's blob, future chapters will go in detail
anyway! quite a small recap but I wasn't going to add the parts of Ma's pov again, I mean just letting you take a peek on how his personality had changed a bit... I won't reveal what he though from Mai being an orphan yet, gotta save some for future chaps flash backs
also the upcoming case has some spices on, hope you guys don't mind and look forward to it.
