38 Blacktop Obsession

"Oh hell yeah! I found the snacks!" Roman yelled, five hours later, louder than he meant to. "Kaidyn, check this out!" He brought a bucket of candy over, getting a dirty look from Tej.

"She was trying to go to sleep, Roman." Tej grumbled, looking at Brian. She hadn't been to sleep yet and she was being Kaidyn for sure. They had already taken some quizzes, played going on a trip and answered many questions.

"Let me go see what he found." Kaidyn scrambled back up out of Tej's lap like she had done right after they took off.

"Man, I almost had her asleep and calmed down...again. That's twice now Rome's ass has got her going again." Tej grumbled, leaning his head back with an exasperated sigh.

"Bro, Roman really brings out the Kaidyn in Kaidyn, don't you think?" Brian asked with a laugh.

"Yeah man, he really does." Tej agreed, watching the two.

"I am so bored. What time is it?" Kaidyn asked, sitting down by Tej and Brian.

"It's only been about five hours." Brian said, looking at his watch.

"I am so bored." Kaidyn said, sighing and blowing her hair out of her eyes. She reached over to the wall and clicked the switch and to her delight, the light turned on. "Yes!" She said, excited.

"Babygirl, let's turn it off and try to get some sleep." Tej tried to get her to settle down again. This song and dance had been going on for a while now.

"Wonder how Shay and Hector are doing. You think they know the lights turn on?" She asked,

"Haha, Blondie, look up here, lots of things to do." Roman called, walking back in the truck to the group.

"Any pickles in there?" She asked, getting up, trying to keep her balance as the truck was driving down the road.

"Hey we should be pulling into this warehouse real soon." Brian looked at his watch, telling Tej.

"I didn't realize just how much Roman hated to be cooped up in places. Kinda funny watching him act like a caged animal." Tej noted, watching him with Kaidyn.

"Yup, he can blame that time in prison for that. He loves to know he's free to go wherever." Brian nodded.

"And to eat whatever." Tej added, making them both laugh.

"Why are we slowing down?" Kaidyn asked, grimacing at the sandwiches in the basket.

"We might be switching out drivers." Roman tore into a sandwich. "Don't toss these just because your picky ass don't want them." He said indignantly.

"We need some White Castles." She rolled her eyes. "Oh what I wouldn't give for some of that." She said, the turn making her stumble into Roman.

"Why am I always catching you, girl?" he asked playfully. The truck stopped, making her smile disappear. She looked a little uneasy. "It's okay. Just stay back here with me until they give us the all clear," he nodded, knowing they were pulling into a warehouse to switch drivers and give their legs a break but he still wanted her to be cautious.

"So you survived the first leg, eh" Hector lifted up the back, looking at Brain and Tej.

"We made it." Brian gave him a handshake and a laugh.

"Yo, can I get in the other semi next round?" Tej asked, glaring at Roman who was chasing Kaidyn to the end of the truck now.

"They are quite the combo." Hector nodded, already feeling tired from the energy they were giving off.

"Tell me about it." Tej nodded, agreeing.

"Shay!" Kaidyn smiled, happy to see her sister as always.

"Lets go to the girls room, we got about 10 more minutes before we get back in there." Shayde grabbed her arm and led her to the bathroom.

"You doing okay in there?" Shayde asked as they walked back out to the truck.
"Yeah, just bored." Kaidyn nodded, rubbing her wrist.

"How's your pain?" Shayde asked, knowing the answer already.

"It's fine."Kaidyn stopped, hoping Shayde wouldn't see she was kind of lying.

"Uh huh." Shayde raised an eyebrow, tsking her teeth, knowing better. "Don't lie to me." Shayde shook her head.

"I'm fine, Shay." Kaidyn said, rolling her eyes.

"Brian already texted me and told me you were hurting." Shayde shook her head and folded her arms.

"Ugh, I can't trust no one." Kaidyn grumbled, angry she had been sold out.

"Yeah, you know he's got your best interest in mind. Take these." She handed her two pain pills and a bottle of water.

"No, I hate how they make me feel." Kaidyn shook her head.

"Okay, fine. Don't take them." Shayde said, shrugging much to her surprise

"Good, glad that's settled. Quit actin like a worried mom, would you?" Kaidyn asked, annoyed and shocked that her sister gave up so easy. Shayde walked over to Hector, who was pulling some bags out of the front of the truck.

"Kaidyn just told me to quit acting like a worried mom. Can you give her these and handle that please?" Shayde walked up behind him and quietly handed him the two pills.

"I'm on it, Mamacita." Hector assured her, patting her shoulder.
"Kaidyn, why do you think you can hide things?" Hector asked, opening her hand and putting the pills and a water bottle in her hand. "Swallow. Now." Hector ordered, folding his arms. "You don't want to delay this trip any longer do you?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I'm fine. It's not that bad." Kaidyn sighed, seriously annoyed now, clearly not swallowing them.

"It's not fine because once the pain gets out of control it will be harder to get it back under control." Hector said, frowning.

"If I take it can we stop at a White Castle?" She asked, not wanting to take these meds and not super hungry.

"No." He replied, not blinking as he stared at her. "No stops and it doesn't matter because there's not any on the way anyway." he said, not moving his eyes off of her.

"Can I have your phone to shop with? It's boring back there." Kaidyn tried to pout.

"You know you don't get anything when you disrespect Shayde like that." Hector shook his head, clearly upset with her.

"I know. I am sorry." She said, sighing and putting the pills in her mouth.

"That's better. Now go say sorry to her." Hector said, pushing her towards Shayde.

"Hey Shay, can I ride in yo truck?" Tej asked, watching Roman run around looking for food.

"Your boy and Kaidyn a bit too hyped for you?" Shayde asked with a grin.

"You already know. I can handle her but he's just riling her up and he's enough already in closed spaces." Tej grinned.

"Yeah, I'd be by myself anyway because Hector's jumping up front so it's cool." Shayde nodded, watching Kaidyn sulk over to them.

"I'm sorry." She grumbled.

"It's fine. Just wish you'd listen to me once in a while." Shayde sighed.

"I know I am sorry." Kaidyn hugged her. "I love you. I took them." she promised.

"Good, I just don't want you hurting. And quit rubbing those wrists before you infect them," Shayde whispered in her ear when she hugged her.

"Shaydeeeeeee" Kaidyn grumbled, making Shayde laugh.

"Come on, let's get you back in your truck." Shayde put an arm around her and walked her to the truck.

"Come on, Tej." Kaidyn called.

"I'ma ride with your sis, but you be sure to wear Rome out for us, would ya?" Tej asked, lifting her up to put her in the truck, making her giggle. "Give him hell." he grinned at her and she nodded.

"I got this." She promised, making Tej laugh. He walked away with Shayde, looking back to make sure she was okay.
