Therus, Monday evening. Dinner

Frank walked in and up to the counter. Behind it he found a cougar that took his breath away. He'd never seen such a beautiful mammal, and he wasn't ashamed to say it, or at least think it. Her name tag said Erin, and she was all he could focus on as he stood there unable to see anything else but her. The light of the restaurant lit her fur in a way that left only one thought in his head. Beautiful.

The waitress looked up at Frank and gave him a warm smile. "Good evening sir. Welcome to Therus. How Can I help you?"

Frank wasn't sure why, but his voice left him for several moments as he took in the waitress. Shaking his head to clear it, he gave her an embarrassed smile knowing he had been staring. "Sorry… I'm… I'm here with Lady Fangmeyer's party."

Grinning, she pointed to a roped off section. "They're in there. You aren't one of their mates, are you?"

Shaking his head and his ears folding back. "Oh no. I'm not nearly well placed enough in the pack for them to even look at me like that. Nor I would dare challenge The Designate or the Second. I know my place well enough for that. Lady Fangmeyer invited me."

Ed, Stu, and Mikel entering right behind Frank as he spoke. With a grin, Ed pats Frank on the shoulder. "That's good to hear there wolf. You said Lizz invited you to dinner, well ain't you the lucky wolf."

Franks eyes' going wide, his ears flattening to his head completely, and his tail curling up as he exposed his neck. "I meant no disrespect Second. My deepest apologies if I offended and I accept whatever punishment you deem necessary."

Shaking his head, Ed chuffed, causing Frank to straighten up, though his ears stayed hidden and tail curled. "What's your name?"

"Frank Erzatz, sir."

Smiling warmly, Ed patted Frank on the shoulder, who manages to just barely not flinch. "AH! You're the Zuber driver that saved them from the side of the freeway and I hear gave them another ride to two, yes?" Getting a nod from Frank. "Well then Frank, just for that alone, any unintentional slight is forgiven, not that I would have held it against you. Come on. I recommend anything on the menu. I tell you. It is all good." Putting an arm around Franks shoulders and leading him towards where everyone else was. "That fox in the kitchen is a genius."

Barely holding in a freak out, Frank nodded. "Thank you sir."

Ed laughed. "Oh, no need to be that formal. Call me Ed. You've at least earned that much after you saved our ladies from the side of the freeway."

Frank's tail and ears partially recovered. Taking a quick moment to swallow. "Thank you, Ed. Sir."

With a grin, Ed slaps him on the back lightly. "Good try. You'll get there."

They approached the table and the conversation of what to order tapered off. Elli grinning, LIzz and Judy smiling. "Ed, my love. I see you have found our driver and savior, Frank"

Returning the grin, Ed nods. "We have, at that. Come on Frank, have a seat. Pointing to the one next to Elli and himself, opposite Lizz and Judy.

Taking the seat carefully, clearly nervously, and only after the others were seated. Mikel sitting next to him on the other side, Joan laughs gently. "Calm down Frank. This is not a formal meal, this is a friendly meal with lots of non-wolves. Notice all the rabbits, and the pair of leopards? Take a deep breath buddy, before you pass out. You don't have to worry about formal protocol here, just normal, every day, friendly, pack basics."

Frank looked to Mikel and nodded. "Okay."

Mikel nodded and gave Frank a pat on the shoulder. " Look. I get it. The Designate's mate asked you to join them for a meal. One where the Second, his mate, and their mutual Firsts are also in attendance. You're worried about screwing this up and hurting your family. Well, as long as you don't start a howl, or do something else embarrassing like that, you will do fine. Enjoy the meal, join in the conversation, and you'll be fine."

Frank took a deep breath and let it out through his nose slowly. "Okay. Thank you."

Mikel offered his paw. "Mikel Howel. We're not that far above you within the pack.

Shaking the offered paw, Frank started to really relax. "Frank Erzats, Ether pack, Wolford border pack. Pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Ed inserted himself. "Ether? You only affiliated a few years ago, if memory serves."

Frank turned to Ed with a nod. "Yes. We moved here from Atlantica, leaving the pack there. We were well placed, but could not abide some of the decisions of the alphas. Better to leave with our honor than abide alpha's who had lost touch, lost our respect, and who sought to take us backwards socially."

Ed frowned. "That is a very strong condemnation of the pack alpha's. What was it that triggered such a strong reaction?"

Frank frowned himself, his ears setting. "I wasn't of age to be part of the decision, but now that I am, I agree with it. They were making decrees almost daily. They decreed that no business could be done with any non-canine owned business, but that didn't include foxes. Anyone in a relationship with a non-wolf was to be ejected from the pack. Stranger things like stating what brands of cell phone we were allowed to have, again under the penalty of ejection. We could only use the carrier selected by the alphas, and other things. What brand of toothpaste we even had to use. They were even starting to set up pack stores where we were going to be forced to buy everything. It was just piling on the weirdness, bigotry, and other problems. The pack dissolved shortly after we left."

Ed nodded with a grim smile. "Oh, I heard about that. It came out shortly after the pack dissolved and the records were gone through by the alphas of the remaining packs that your old alphas had gotten themselves into agreements with a bunch of businesses. Including a cell carrier and a bunch of others. They were getting bonus payments to force the pack to switch. Things like that will quickly burn the trust in an alpha. Makes sense why your pack group left. Well, considering you did it for honorable reasons, Wolford is lucky to have you. You yourself have done well these last few days in proving that as well. Judy's family was just telling me how you were an excellent and understanding driver for them."

Frank smiled. "I treat all my rides the same. While they may be special mammals, being the parents and siblings of Judy WildeHopps, savior of the city. I wouldn't treat any other mammals less than them. Every mammal deserves to be treated properly. As for what happened today. I was horrified when I got the call from Zuber corporate. I am so very glad I was so close and could do the pickup. I can't believe someone would be so hateful that they would abandon any mammal, and especially two pregnant mammals on the side of the freeway. I'm just so glad that nothing happened before I could get there."

Ed nodded with a smile and a light slap to Frank's back. "Well, that's why Lizz asked if you wanted to share this meal with us. She's still learning some of the deeper wolf culture stuff, but I am very glad she did. It may just be luck, but I'm am more inclined to think that Luna put you in the path of Lizz and the others, knowing that you would treat them right."

"I would like to believe that too. Whatever the reason, I am glad that I was there for them."

Lizz speaks up. "As were we, Frank. It is always refreshing to know that there are truly good mammals out there that don't do things expecting more than, in your case, your fare."

"That is all I expected and hoped for. Anything else, such as being invited to share in this meal, for which I wish to again say how honored I am to be invited, is just a bonus."

Ed smiled. "The honor is ours, as is the meal itself, so please enjoy yourself."

Bonnie looked up from her menu, having made her decision. "Frank. I'm so glad you joined us. I want to thank you again for saving us after we were abandoned on the freeway by that horrible mammal. I know it was just luck, but so very glad it was you. I was immediately relieved upon seeing you, knowing that we wouldn't have a repeat of what landed us there."

"It was my great pleasure and honor, Mrs. Hopps."

"Call me, Bonnie. Please."

"I will. Do you recommend anything on the menu?"

"Well, I know Judy swears by the burritos, but I am going to try the salmon tonight. What about you, Stu?"

"I'm actually going with the Surf and Turf, Chicken and shrimp combo."

Frank looked between them, eyes wide and ears folded back. "I see... I'm honestly not sure how to take that."

Judy grinned. "We Hopps are a bit different than most rabbits you'll meet, Frank. Just roll with it."

Erin stepped up, and everyone at the table noticed the way he looked at her, his tail wagging as she spoke. "That's good advice. It'll hurt your brain less if you just roll with the fact that these rabbits are omnivores. So, what can I get you lovely mammals? Though I see at least two missing, they still on shift?"

"Judy nodded. That's right, they should be joining us soon enough. I think I'll actually have the Blackened Shrimp and Chicken Alfredo, extra spicy. I want it to bite back."

Erin grinned. "What? No burrito?"

"No, I'm feeling the pasta, so bring it on!"

"Good enough." Erin jotted down, then turned to Bonnie and Stu. "I heard Salmon for you and the Surf and Turf?"

Bonnie nodded. "That's right."

"Great." Making another couple notes. "Looking to the rest of the rabbits and taking their orders, then the two snow leopards, followed by the wolves and their mates." Great. I'll get this in and Fin will have it all out to you as soon as possible."

Light conversation was had while they waited for their food. Judy and Lizz finally reaching a breaking point. Judy yelled back to the kitchen. "Fin! What is taking you so long, mammal?"

Fin stepped out, Clara as well. "Keep your skirt on, Toot-toot! I ain't crazy enough to let a pregnant, meat eating rabbit, go hungry."

Clara stopped and turned to Fin. "Wait. You're telling me that this isn't just for the predators."

"No sweet pea, the rabbits eat meat too."

Erin pushed out of the kitchen with another tray of food. "Just roll with it Clara, you'll hurt yourself trying to figure it out." Dodging around Fin and Clara and distributing the food on her tray.

Clara shrugged. "Well, if it is what they ordered, I gotta see this." Helping distribute the rest of the food, then watching from the nearby counter with a mixture of shock and awe. Looking to Fin sitting next to her. "Finny. I wouldn't believe it if I wasn't seeing it."

"It is what it is, Love. Those be actual rabbits, but ain't nothing normal about them. I thought Judy was maybe a one off, but after meetin' the rest of them, she ain't as weird as I thought. At least not as compared to her family. Against other rabbits, she's a total freak."

Nick and Mike walked in and Erin greets them. "Hey guys. We just got the food out for everyone else. Judy ordered a Salmon burger for you, Nick, and Lizz ordered a large Four Cheese Chicken pasta with Honey Pepper chicken, for you Mike. If you have a seat, I'll have it out for you in just a second."

Nick smiled up at Erin. "Thank you, Erin!" With that, they joined the rest of the group, Nick taking the waiting seat next to Judy, and Mike the one next to Lizz. Giving Judy a kiss between the ears. "Hi love. How was your day?"

Judy smiled up at Nick and returned the kiss to the side of his muzzle. "Eventful. I think Mom and Dad are starting to really get it."

"Eventful seems to be an understatement. You know you can't keep much from me, even if Delgato hadn't radio'd us. What happened?"

Judy glanced away to Lizz. "Our initial Zuber driver abandoned us on the side of the freeway because we're inters. However, Frank," Pointing to the wolf, "came to our rescue, while Delgato protected us with his cruiser before going after the Zuber driver that dumped us. So, all good."

Nick frowned. "Hardly all good."

"In the long run, Nick. Don't be like that."

Nick nodded. "Okay." His frown remaining.

"So, what were you and Mike late for?"

"Bogo had us hang back and arrest Thrillis, Rast, and Root. It seems Chromest and Ghalt continued the investigation into them after you went on leave. I kinda feel bad for Root's partner, but hopefully he'll get cleared. ... Oh, and I gave Bogo the proposal today. He seemed impressed."

Judy grinned wickedly. "Oh, that's good. That scum needed to be taken down."

Mike laughed. "Yeah. Thrillis took a swipe at Nick and learned the hard way not to underestimate him."

Judy laughed. "Oh, now I need to swing by so Ben can show me the footage."

Mike nodded. "It was something. Big polar bear doing a faceplant as a fox overpowers him. The look on Root and Rast's face was pure gold. They were clearly not expecting that. Of course, before they could do anything the Major and Instructor Velarious took them into custody. It was a beautiful thing. I've never seen Captain Whelt so pissed though. Such a laid back guy for a polar bear, but just wow."

Judy giggled. "Oh, I'm so sorry I missed that, but good that those beasts got theirs. So, what's up with Ket?"

Nick gave a slightly sad smile. "Poor guy seems to be a good officer, but getting partnered with Root is going to taint him. I asked Bogo, since Ket was actually on our alternates list, that if the task force gets approved, that Ket get assigned to it. Working it, assuming he gets cleared, should help wash off some of the taint."

"That would be good." Judy said thoughtfully. "He seemed like a really good officer."

Mike nodded with a smile. "Nick gave him a really good motivational speech. If he can weather the review he's got to go through because of Root, I think he'll be good even if he doesn't end up on the task force."

Judy smiled. "That's good. It would really suck to lose an otherwise good officer."

Nick leaned over and gave Judy a kiss as his food landed in front of him. "I see you went with the pasta tonight."

"Yeah, wanted something different."

"Cool. Oh, I need your help with something."

Judy gave Nick a knowing smirk. "When don't you?"

Nick gasped and clutched his chest. "Oh the mammality!" Falling back in his chair dramatically. "Judy, how could you! I am a fox able to handle things on my own. I come to you in good faith as your mate and friend, asking for you assistance, and you do me like that?"

Laughing, Judy punched his shoulder. "Oh, stop you. What is it? Something that will keep me from going completely crazy I hope."

"Almost assured. Bogo wants me to put together a training based on lived experience of mammals like foxes, and how that arrest for walking while fox can affect their lives. It will be based upon several talks by marginalized mammals, such as foxes, and I have to include my own story, and then include tests. This will then be reviewed by the training team and added to the bi-annual training regimen. Though not until I sign off on it not getting scrubbed into pointlessness."

The idea brought a grin to Judy's face. "Oh, that's awesome. Some sensitivity training, teach them about how their decision to arrest a fox, a weasel, etc... can permanently effect their life and livelihood, have kits taken away, etc..."

"Exactly. Not to not arrest someone, but to not arrest them just because of species. Break down some of those stereotypes and such. Show them just how much harm they can cause."

"Right. That sounds fantastic, Nick. I'm guessing you're going to want a basic, generic test you can use for an initial recording, and then update based on feedback from the officers, speakers, and test. We can do your video at the house, give me something to work with for the initial test."

"Got it in one, Fluff. Sure, we'll do my vid this weekend. Cute and intelligent. A complete package."

Judy narrowed her eyes at him. "Thin ice, fox."

Putting up his paws with a smirk. "I surrender. It was a complement. Will you help me?"

Glaring at him for several long seconds before giving him a brilliant grin. "Of course! This is something that is desperately needed. Sensitivity training never helps if it's generic, but with personal accounts and references to the case files, such as all those times you got pinched but never charged just because you are a fox."

Mike interjected. "Hold up. Nick's been arrested?"

Nick nodded with a wry smile. "Many times, at least three times by you two, before Judy happened to me."

Mike looked completely shocked. "No way? I'd remember that, surely!"

Nick chuckled. "Obviously not, but then you happened to pick me up in a blue Pawaiian shirt, instead of my signature green. I don't hold it against you Mike, nor the five times you did Lizz. It is what it is. I've never brought it up, because it is in the past, but when I do this talk, I will have to bring it up. I hope you two and several other friends will be in the audience, because your questions will be helpful in building an understanding. Being that you two, Delgato, and many others have arrested me a few times. Never charged, but detained nonetheless." Turning to Judy. "So, really, we'll have to do it in the big conference room. Still do it this weekend. will give me a chance to get several officers over from other precincts."

Lizz looked away. "Because you were a fox. I... I remember at least two of those times. I... I'm sorry Nick. I picked you up for all the wrong reasons. I mean, you were just walking down the street."

Nick sighed. "Lizz. You are not the same cop you were then. You are a different, better mammal. Just like I am."

Lizz nodded. "I don't feel as if that is an excuse though."

Elli grinned. "That, sis, is why you are gonna make a great alpha. I sooo cannot wait for Mom to make the official pronouncement!"

Mike looked at Elli. "You really think she will? I mean, it would be better for you and Ed if she rejected us. Then you two would be the Designate."

Ed Frowned deeply. "Mike..." Giving a growl. "Lizz, would you flick his ear for being an idiot, please. Elli?"

Elli nodded. "Yes, I get why he said that, but it definitely warrants a flick. Lizz?"

Lizz snapped her paw out faster than Mike could react, causing him to yip. "Lizz? Why love?"

Leaning over and giving him a kiss on the side of his muzzle. "I get why you said that, but you are being an idiot, love. Neither Elli or Ed want that. They're quite happy with the position that they have. Besides, you wouldn't want that, nor would your mom or dad. The thing is... We'll be shaking things up, and as you have said so many times, there are some changes you want to make. Things about packs that get stagnant and don't change with the times."

Sighing, Mike nodded. "Okay. I just... worry. It isn't going to be easy on you. When our ceremony is over, you will be an official part of the pack, and as the Designates mate. If anything happens to my parents, or they decide to step down, our jobs as cops are pretty much over."

"Maybe we will be detectives by then? I've been talking to Elli, and as long as our jobs are not like that of beat cops, then we should be able to keep our jobs. So we just have to catch up to those two." Pointing to Judy and Nick. "And make detective. Finish our Bachelor's degrees and start working on our Masters."

"Can we do that?"

Nick laughed. "Both Judy and I are almost there on the Masters. You'd be amazed what they have in the way of online classes these days. And they are not that expensive, if that is what you are worried about."

Frank spoke up with a wide smile. "I take online classes. It lets me study when I'm not driving, and do class work from my car, or whenever I'm home. It is really cheap too. Two or three fares can cover most classes. I'll have my associates degree in a few more months. I'm using Red Wolf University."

Nick nodded. "We looked at that, but it didn't have the courses Judy and I needed. You just have to do your research to make sure the school has the programs you need or want. Judy is sending Lizz the info on the school we're using."

Mike smiled, his tail giving a happy wag. "That sounds like a plan. What are you studying, Mike?"

Frank's ears folded, realizing he'd jumped into the conversation. "I… I'm studying graphic design."

Mike gave Frank a reassuring smile. "That sounds great, Frank."

"Thank you. I've always drawn, and my mom has always told us that we should do something that makes us happy. Something that doesn't feel like a job."

"She sounds like a really smart wolf."

Frank smiled, he's ears righting themselves. "She really is. She was the driving force behind us leaving our old pack and moving here to Zootopia to join Wolford."

Lizz smiled. "I understand that is a really big leap for a wolf. Things must have been bad. I hope you and your family have found Zootopia, and Wolford pack to your liking."

"Mostly yes. The whole thing with mammals going savage kinda scared us, but I doubt there were many mammals that were not. If I can be so bold. Lady Fangmeyer, Designate… I just know deep in my soul that you will make amazing alphas."

Lizz pulled Mike to her and gave him a kiss, causing him to stiffen and his ears to fold back for a second before he relaxed into the kiss. "Sorry love. The whole being open thing is still new. Easy to revert to the fear that ruled us for so long.

Lizz smiled and kissed Mike again. "I know. I feel it at least twice a day."

Bonnie smiled at the group. "I'm so glad you have each other. But, Elli, I'm still a bit confused why you call Lizz, sis."

Chuckling, Elli sits back. "It is because I'm married to Ed, who is Mike's younger brother. Because of birth order, that makes me the mate of the Second in line. Lizz being mated to the Designate, or the first in line. So, by marriage, she is my sister, and as a member of the Wolford pack, she is also my sister. So, she's my sis. My family isn't super supportive of me being with Ed. What little there is of them. Don't have any siblings and really only extended family; aunts, uncles, cousins, and such."

"Ah, that makes sense. And then Judy and Nick are their chosen, and your, chosen Firsts. Which is some kind of councilor, right hand mammal, etc..."

"That's right."

Nick frowned. "I'm a what now?"

Mike smiled. "Yeah. Didn't mean it to happen, but mom seems to have figured it out and is probably why you are invited to dinner. As our firsts, you are just as much family as we are, and need to be evaluated and acknowledged as members of the pack as well."

Nick's eyes went wide and his ears folded flat. "Oh gods. Mike, do you understand what you are saying? …" Shaking his head heavily. "Of course you do. Are you insane‽ A First should be another wolf, not a fox. My gods, mammal!"

Mike shrugged. "What? You know more about wolf culture than you have any business knowing. I assume you learned it for your earlier career. You're intelligent, and have a knack for seeing around a problem. Between you and Judy, there is nothing I can conceive of that you two cannot help us unravel. Wolf business and politics, or otherwise."

"Mike..." Nick's voice rising in concern.

"No, Nick. Listen. Lizz and I considered both of you friends, and I assume you feel the same of us, and that was before the last week or so. When you figured out what was between Lizz and I, you didn't confront us, you and Judy did what you do best. You found a way around the problem to help us, as your friends. You made it so we didn't have to keep living as we were. Living in fear of discovery. No, you hustled us into that dinner, and revealed your own relationship to give us the opening to come clean.

You then already had a plan in place, that just needed us as chess pieces, to be moved into the right position. We're no longer living in fear. We've had some of the best experiences of our lives in the last few days. We're moving to a new place where we are going to be able to make a true home for our pups, or cubs, or... For our offspring. You have done nothing but seek to make the lives of everyone around you better, sometimes even at the detriment of your own. How could we not think of you as our Firsts? You have been that for us for a long time now, this is just going to make it official."

Nick looked on in shock and blinked several times to hold back tears. "Gods, it must be dusty in here. Thank you Mike. Lizz. The confidence you place in us, the honor you grant us, is beyond words."

Judy nodded. "You honor us with the trust you place in us as your First. Thank you both."

Mike grinned. "See. You have both pretty much gotten the idea down. At least the general idea of what to say, and without any training. All the more reason you will both make ideal Firsts. Your outside perspective will be invaluable. Don't you agree love?"

Lizz nodded with a smile. "I very much do. I warn you now, I'm not going to stick as tight to all the protocols and expectations of a wolf alpha, because I am not."

Mike smiled and gave Lizz a quick kiss. "And I don't want you to. Enough to keep things comfortable for the wolves around us, but I have lived with your tiger ways for so many years, if you dropped all of them I'd feel weird. We'd feel weird. When it happens, we'll find our own new normal for it. For formal functions, we will have to keep to the traditions, things like family functions, Alpha and Eldger meeting. Things like that. But with us. when it is not things like that, I need my tiger."

"Good. I can work with that. It would be just as weird if you weren't what I'm used to. I will stick as tight to them as I can around your parents, or those formal functions. And I do need to learn more about this honor thing, and the weirdness you wolves have about food. Which I assume is why Frank was so floored when I asked him to join us."

Mike nodded. "That is exactly it. His family and pack are not nearly close enough to the core pack to warrant this, save of course his rescuing you and his treatment of you as your Zuber driver. That said, he's shown honor in his treatment of you, Judy, Elli, Joan, as well as Judy's parents and family. Honor that warrants sharing a meal with us, which elevates his status within the pack, and with his elevation, so too is his family and aligned pack elevated. Which is why I'm sure you'll be bringing him up during dinner tomorrow."

Lizz nodded. "Yes, that is the plan, along with a few others. I've got notes. Something Elli says is perfectly acceptable."

"That's right, Sis. You are not expected to remember every single interaction, but by taking notes like that, kinda like you do as a cop, you'll not hurt someone's honor by missing them."

Mike smiled. "Excellent. I've always kept a notebook myself, for that reason." Turning to Frank. "Frank, thank you again for the honor you showed the mates of my brother, myself, and our chosen Firsts, as well as their friends and family. It may have technically been your job, but I feel that Luna placed you in the right place to be that mammal that would respond when they needed you there for them. So thank you. I hope you enjoyed the meal."

Frank had been talking to Mikel, but turned when addressed by Mike. "It was my great honor to serve and assist them in their moments of need. If by luck, or Luna, I am glad to have been of service."

Nick nudged Judy. "Anything else interesting?"

Judy shrugged. "We got accosted by a bunch of anti-inters. Lizz and I showed our badges, A couple of NightWolf pack wolves stepped forward, along with a good dozen or more regular Wolford pack members, a few Tigers, including Lizz's cousin who is dating a maned wolf, a handful of foxes, a few other species, and even a number of rabbits. All standing with us. They were not targeting us except as targets of opportunity. They were just looking to harass and worse, whomever they came across. They actually tried to pay Duke to hook them up with squirt guns filled with Nighthowler, and lethals with filed serials."

"No kidding."

"No kidding. Duke has apparently turned over a new leaf. Probably why we haven't arrested him in ages. He filled the squirt guns with grape juice, and had filed the firing pins so the lethals were useless. Then, when he saw it was us, me specifically, he waited until McHorn showed up to take the idiots into custody, then handed everything over as evidence, along with a recording of them making threats and such."

"Wow. He has changed. I'll have to look him up to see this for myself."

Conversation continued from there, but kept away from heavy subjects until they broke up at nearly ten that evening. Frank happily gave Judy's family a ride to their hotel after some teary goodbyes, as they would be on the first train in the morning. Pop-pop and Sasha could barely stand to be separated. Sasha promised to come out to the farm within a few weeks once their move was done.

As Judy, Bonnie, and Stu discussed the arrangements for the crew of rabbits to come help with the move. Frank made sure that they would let him know when they would show up so he could help as well. Since both Nick and Mike would be working, he offered himself as the extra muscle and Zootopia native to help make things, under Lizz and Judy's supervision, go smoothly.
