She didn't think they were allowed to take off their jumpers. But someone from Easy was dancing around in just his shirt, with a lovely Red Cross girl. England was proving to be a very nice country, with good people and music. However, the Americans were supposed to enjoy warm beer, instead of cold. Whiskey was expensive and gin was cheaper. Between the four friends, they bought three bottles of gin at the bar that night. They weren't supposed to get very drunk, seeing as they were stuck in a tiny village in the county Wiltshire. Easy and Dog Company were stationed in Aldbourne, a tiny village fifty miles from London. Ten miles from Aldbourne, Easy enjoyed a night with 2nd Battalion in another village.
Robin didn't know the name of the village – not anymore, anyway. She was drinking gin and soon had the memory of a goldfish. Wondering around the club, she squeezed through men dancing with girls on the dancefloor, while a live band played loudly behind them. Bob was the last familiar face she saw, before reaching the end of the dancefloor. There, Robin spotted a young woman sitting alone, drink in her hand. When she noticed Robin, the woman smiled. Robin looked behind her, thinking the woman had caught a young man's attention. But no, she was smiling at her.
Rising to her feet, the woman approached Robin and said into her ear;
"what's a girl like you, doing in a place like this?"
With a tiny grin, Robin replied;
"could ask you the same thing".
"I'm in uniform".
"Me too".
The woman grinned;
"I'm Maggie".
"Same". Robin dumbly replied.
Maggie raised her eyebrow;
"excuse me?"
"Ah shit – no, my names Robin".
Maggie chuckled;
"I've either flustered you, or you're completely shitfaced".
Robin shrugged;
"eh…bit of both, really".
With a twinkle in her eye, Maggie suggested;
"I think we should get to know each other, Robin".
Robin nodded eagerly;
"aye…aye, I like the sound of that". She said, "I really do".
Boldly, Maggie told Robin's hand;
"but not here, Robin. How about somewhere…private?"
Clearing her throat, Robin once again, nodded;
"aye, I'm down for that. Let's go".
Hand in hand, they walked back across the dancefloor, the band continued to play. Robin kept a tight grip on Maggie's hand, following the woman obediently like a dog. Heart in her throat, she soon felt slightly dizzy and warm, when Maggie opened the door into a cupboard and stepped inside first. Taking in a deep breath, Robin followed her inside and closed the door.
Not aware that someone was watching.
"Nervous?" Maggie whispered.
"Nope. Nah, not me…nothing scares old Robin".
"Really?" Maggie asked while grabbing a hold of Robin's jacket, "I thought birds were flighty little creatures".
Robin let out a nervous sort of laugh;
"eh? Aw, that's funny, Maggie".
Before they moved on, Robin took another swig of gin. With a tiny shudder, she tossed the bottle to the ground and wrapped her arms around Maggie's neck, and brought their lips together. At first, Maggie smiled but soon deepened the kiss. Her hands went around Robin's waist, where she brought their bodies closer together. Pulling back for air, Robin whispered;
"you've done this before?"
Maggie giggled;
"yes. More than I can count, Robin".
Letting go of her, Robin took off her jumper and started to unbutton her trousers. Maggie watched for a few seconds before she pulled her dress over her head and allowed it to fall on the ground. Robin's eyes went a little wide then when staring at the naked woman in front of her;
"holy shit-"
But her whisper was cut off when Maggie kissed her hard.
There was a knock on the door, and someone called her name;
"Robin?"
"Fuck". Maggie hissed.
Taking a step back, she grabbed her dress and hurriedly started to put it on. Robin frowned and looked towards the door;
"Buddy?"
"Yeah, it's me". Dukeman replied, "you – uh – you okay in there?"
"Aye, fine…why?"
"Just saw you with another girl is all".
Robin sighed and faced Maggie, who had her dress back on. Frowning, she asked;
"why you getting dressed?"
Maggie huffed;
"they'll put us in a mental hospital if they catch us having sex, Robin".
"Buddy's not 'gonna put us in a loony bin. My mum's there too". Robin waved off her concern, "it's fine, Maggie. Just take your dress off again, eh? Buddy will fuck off soon enough".
"We have to make this look convincing". Maggie mumbled.
Robin frowned;
"what're you on about?"
"If he asks, we were fighting over a guy".
"I'm not 'gonna say-"
Once again, Maggie cut Robin off.
But not with a kiss.
Instead, Maggie punched Robin under her left eye. Shocked, Robin fell to the ground.
"Sorry". Maggie whispered as she stepped over Robin to leave the cupboard.
Dukeman's eyes widened, when he saw Robin slumped on the ground;
"Robin! What the fuck happened?"
Robin squinted up at Dukeman, who was soon crouched in front of her;
"she fucking punched me, Buddy".
"Why?"
"Cause…we were kissing and-"
"what?" Dukeman cut her off, "why were you kissing her?"
Robin shrugged;
"why not?"
"Did she 'wanna kiss you?"
"Aye, she took off her dress". Robin told him, "I saw her…she was naked, Buddy".
He looked amused;
"was she?"
She nodded;
"yup…naked".
"Still doesn't explain the punch to the face, pal".
When she didn't respond, Dukeman sighed;
"come on, let's get you cleaned up".
…
Locking the bathroom door, Dukeman turned to Robin, who was sitting on the sink counter, with a wet paper town pressed against her left eye. Dukeman was drunk but not as drunk as his friend. Arms crossing over his chest, he stared at Robin. He was confused. Robin wasn't an affectionate person when it came to physical contact. Not even her closest friends had hugged or held her.
With a small smile, Robin mumbled;
"my first kiss tonight".
"It was?" He asked, even more confused, "I thought you lost your virginity?"
She snorted;
"aye, I did…but no kissing, eh?"
"Why?"
"Cause I was thirteen".
Dukeman's face dropped and he paled;
"what?" He whispered, "what do you-"
"dad's brother, mind".
Feeling sick, he choked out;
"fucking hell…".
Looking at him, Robin said;
"I'm a freak".
"What?" Dukeman frowned, "you're not a freak".
"Aye…'am a freak". She whispered, "big fucking freak…with a black eye now".
He shook his head;
"you ain't".
"Just this sob story, eh? I'm fucking pathetic".
Robin nodded to the door;
"just gone and kissed a lassie…cause she's beautiful".
Dukeman made his way over to her. Firmly, he told Robin;
"you're not a fucking freak…you're my best friend".
Head tilting to the side, she whispered;
"even if I kiss girls?"
"It doesn't bother me, pal". Dukeman said, "we're brothers for life".
"I'm a weird fucking brother, mate".
With a sad smile, he told her;
"you're strange, Robin. But you ain't a freak. You're one of those oddballs, you know? Nothing wrong with it but not everyone's 'gonna like it".
Licking her lips, she looked down and mumbled;
"happy that Maggie was my first kiss…she's a good lass".
"She punched you". Dukeman pointed out with a grin, "you sure about that, pal?"
Robin waved that off;
"she had a good reason".
"I'll take your word for it".
When Robin looked up at him, tears were burning in her eyes;
"I fucking love you, eh? You, Bob and Hoobs. I'd be fucked without yous".
Dukeman clapped her shoulder;
"we love you too, pal".
